We are THRILLED to be talking this week about Mary-Kate and Ashley's appearance at MTV's 2003 Video Music Awards and subsequent Rolling Stone Cover (and never again about Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action). On August 28th 2003, Mary-Kate and Ashley made their second appearance at the MTV VMAs. For anyone who doesn't remember, this was a big year for the VMAs. This was the VMAs that opened with the notorious Britney Spears, Madonna & Christina Aguilera performance, and a tidbit that the history books don't mention is that Mary-Kate and Ashley were also there! They presented best pop video with David Spade, and every joke Chris Rock makes about them is as cringey as you can imagine. We also talk about their red carpet interview with SuChin Pak before the show, who asks them how they feel about Rolling Stone calling them "America's Fantasy," in their iconic cover that was coming out just a week later. In this interview and in the Rolling Stone article, Mary-Kate and Ashley walk the impossible tightrope of posing for a magazine with notoriously sexy covers while denying an awareness of their own sexuality amidst a barrage of reminders that America has started sexualizing them. We do our best to unpack this strange and unsettling time in pop culture history, and buckle up for the rollercoaster that is about to be our coverage of Mary-Kate and Ashley in 2003 & '04. We hope you enjoy this first chapter! You can also watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here. You can watch the full video of the 2003 VMAS here and read their Rolling Stone Article here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsQuestions/thoughts? The show kicks off with Levi previewing the onslaught of fall TV premieres headed your way. From returning favorites like Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay, to decade-spanning competitions like season 45 of Survivor, your DVR is about to get a major workout. We also get Levi's hot takes on the new Bachelor seasons (will he commit to recapping the "Golden Bachelor" spinoff?) and the highly-anticipated gameshow Snake in the Grass hosted by David Spade. But the premiere Levi is most excited for is season 2 of Press Your Luck with the "gorgeous" Elizabeth Banks. Get your whistles ready! After whetting your appetite for fall TV, the podcast takes a hard news turn as Levi dives into some of the most absurd recent headlines. First up is the unbelievable saga of the U.S. military losing complete control of a $100 million fighter jet during a routine test flight. Levi breaks down the ridiculousness of the world's most advanced military misplacing an incredibly expensive piece of equipment for several hours before it eventually crashed landed. The best part? The first eyewitness account of the rogue jet came from a random civilian named Randolph who described hearing "a screeching and a whistling" before a loud boom. Randolph's interview immediately goes viral. The news gets even more bizarre as Levi reads a handwritten letter sent to TMZ straight from Joe Exotic's prison cell. The Tiger King star dishes on his latest relationship drama after splitting from his boyfriend Seth. The letter is peak Joe Exotic, questioning why anyone would spread rumors about him and Seth breaking up, while also declaring "someone more mature" will be in his life soon. Levi reads the full letter in Exotic's voice for an absolutely hilarious segment. In more celebrity breakup news, Levi covers the "messy situation" unfolding between Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Things have gotten so bad that Taylor Swift is now hanging out with Sophie in what is surely an epic gossip fest over wine. But it turns out Joe might be preventing Sophie from taking their kids back to her native England. Can their divorce get any more complicated? After thoroughly summarizing the chaos surrounding Joe Exotic and these high-profile celebrity splits, Levi switches gears to close out the podcast with some lighter news. In what he describes as a "produce catastrophe," Levi reports that Shawn Mendes accidentally dropped an entire bag of groceries in his driveway. The video of a flustered Shawn chasing after rolling potatoes is the perfect palate cleanser after so much drama. From Fall TV insights to celebrity relationship meltdowns and viral moments, this episode of What Are We Doing has it all. Levi's passionate delivery and humorous injected commentary keeps this informal podcast feeling like you're just chatting with a friend about the latest headlines. That's the magic of What Are We Doing - it feels fun, fresh and unexpected while still keeping you up-to-date on news and pop culture. Saturday Night Live is not just a TV comedy institution but also an incubator for some of the brightest comedy stars of the silver screen. In our three-part miniseries Saturday Night Leavers - Celluloid Man-Children Of 90s Cinema, we are surveying the careers of three men who left the show in 1995, and who took their SNL fame to new heights by becoming movie stars. In Part Two of the miniseries we discuss Chris Farley, one of the hottest stars to ever burst out into national fame from Saturday Night Live. Farley took his unforgettable comedic persona and superstardom to the cinema immediately after SNL fired him in 1995, but his career was tragically cut short by his death in 1997 at the age of 33. We begin by discussing our own childhood needs for attention and approval from strangers, and then we investigate Chris Farley's upbringing as a hell-raising but sensitive and devoutly Catholic boy in Wisconsin, his meteoric rise in improv comedy, and our own favorite moments of Farley's career in SNL and beyond. Then we revisit Chris Farley's two best known film roles: co-starring with SNL alum David Spade in 1995's hit brake pad sales comedy TOMMY BOY, and in 1996's less-than-hit political(?) comedy BLACK SHEEP. How do these movies hold up now? Whether or not you knew him as a "heartbreaker" or "not hygienic," and whether or not he ever really lived in a van down by the river, Chris Farley was an inescapable staple in American homes throughout the 1990s. And quotes from his sketch and movie characters were on the tongues of countless grade-school youth, including at least one host of this podcast. Do... do you remember that? It was awesome! Welcome to Wednesday as we talk about a very practical consumer communication tool that was released by Carvana. We also cover the end of the Nissan Titan as well as one loyal worker being given a well-deserved crowd funded retirement gift. We could talk about how UAW President Shawn Fain called Stellantis' contract proposal ‘trash' or how Honda's quarterly profits are up 78% year over year, but given you already know that, we're going to keep moving into some more practical stories this WednesdayCarvana has introduced a new tool, Carvana Value Tracker, allowing consumers to obtain and monitor their vehicle's valuation based on changing market conditions. The tool uses Carvana's proprietary technology and data from nearly 20 third-party sources to provide real-time vehicle worth.Andrew Dickerson, Carvana's director of engineering and special projects, emphasized the tool's aim to demystify car selling by providing actionable insights into a vehicle's value.“The car in a customer's driveway is likely one of the largest assets in their portfolio, and yet most have no idea at any given moment what that asset is worth. With Carvana Value Tracker, we are demystifying car selling by offering insight into a customer's car's value at any point in time, in a way that is actionable should they choose to sell.”The tool will soon feature biweekly updates and aims to provide more specific insights tailored to individual vehicles. The Titan has fallen as Nissan announces the discontinuation of its full-size pickup after 2024. Unable to rival giants like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, the Titan's sales never met expectations. The Titan, launched in 2003, never achieved its sales target of 100,000-200,000 units per year, with its highest sales reaching 87,000 and dropping to just 15,063 units in 2022.The Canton, MS plant, where the Titan is manufactured, will be retooled for electrified vehicles, with no expected job losses.Nissan had previously attempted a deal with then-Ram owner FCA to make the Titan a rebadged Ram 1500, but the deal fell through. While the Titan struggled, Nissan's midsize Frontier truck performed better, with sales of 76,000 in 2022, indicating a stronger position in the midsize pickup segment. After going viral on TikTok last year for receiving a goodie bag of some candy and just one movie ticket as a reward for never missing a day of work in 27 years, Burger King employee Kevin Ford was given a whopper of a retirement gift from supporters nationwide who banded together to raise $400k for his retirement. The fund was started by one of Ford's two daughters whom he raised as a single dadEven actor David Spade got in on the action, donating $5000 toward the fund and leaving an encouraging messageHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
