In today's episode, we'll explore the book of Ezra, chapters 7 and 8, where we witness Ezra leading an exodus back to Jerusalem, a powerful echo of Moses' journey. We'll see the profound impact of God's gracious hand upon his people and how it changes the heart of even the kings of the earthly realms. We'll also delve into Luke's Gospel, chapter 20, where Jesus challenges the leaders with His wisdom, authority, and parables, revealing profound truths about God's kingdom. As we read, reflect, and pray together, we'll discover the unyielding mercy, guidance, and love that God extends to us, leading us all homeward. So, let's open our hearts and minds as we warm ourselves by the fires of God's love today. Join me as we set our hearts toward our ultimate destination in Him. Let's begin! TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Out of Egypt Craig Dehut part 2There is so much noise today in the media. Useless, controversial and often inflammatory rhetoric which leads to more and more animosity and division. Documentaries today tend to “fuel the fire” (so to speak) as well. In order to teach the Gospel, we first must understand the Gospel message. The only way to truly understand the Gospel message is to experience it as best we can. Many people are unable to make a pilgrimage to the land of the Bible. Many people do not have the resources, or perhaps their health issues preclude them from doing so. It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words… I'd also add that a video is probably worth 10,000 pictures. Because, in actuality, that is what a video is… thousands of individual pictures strung together in sequence to tell as story. Amen! This brings up the need for safe, professional and Biblically accurate videos that reflect the Bible Stories in a unique way that will motivate, educate and inspire Christians everywhere. That is where our guest comes in. Amen. Craig Dehut is one the co-founders of Apian Media. He and Stuart Peck were alarmed with the soaring rate of disengaged young people with the Bible. They recognized one of the causes was lack of engaging, accurate and professionally produced videos that would capture the attention of, not only the younger generation, but Christians everywhere. And that, in the process, these videos would be viewed from around the world through the power of the internet. Even in places open witnessing cannot be accomplished. Amen! They recently released their latest work, “Out of Egypt,” which is a video detailing their attempt to make the “Exodus Journey” which God used to free Israel from Egyptian bondage. To discuss this magnificent project, help me welcome to the program, Craig Dehut! Craig, thank you for taking the time to join us today! I do appreciate your time. This is part two to a great conversation with Craig Dehut!First question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Craig Dehut?” The idea for Apian Media started way back in 2015. Can you share original motivation that started the planning for this between you and Stuart Peck? Share with our listeners your name, “Appian Media.” What does that reference? Which was your first video that Apian Media produced? How many views have you received on your videos from around the world? What kind testimonials have you received from those that viewed your videos? When you filmed the “Following Jesus” video – What was the most memorable or remarkable experience you can share with us? There is no doubt of the need for videos like you are producing. How important do you view the need to counter the culture of Hollywood and the trash corrupting the minds of people today? Let's talk about your recent video, “Out of Egypt.” How long was the planning process for this video (from “Hey, this is an idea” to actually landing in Egypt)? The primary, I guess I'd say “narrator” in the film, is Jeremy Dehut. I take it Jeremy is your brother? Is that correct? I was watching the video and seen you interview the owner of a brick making factory…You were declared the “master brick maker.” What was your impression when you saw them making bricks almost in the same manner as depicted in the Bible? If I did my calculations correctly, the average brick maker could make 500 bricks per day – per person. Did you ever find out if that was the “tale of the bricks” that would have been used in Biblical times? I learned from the video that the “Ark of the Covenant”...

In this episode, Nate sits down with Dr Glenn Kreider, Professor of Theological Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, where Nate is currently pursuing his PhD under Dr Kreider's supervision. After briefly discussing the PhD program, the conversation moves to God's declaration at the end of Exodus 33, and how that lens helps us make sense of God's character and faithful presence with his people through the rest of the biblical story.
Have you ever desired deliverance from something? I'm sure all of us can resonate with this feeling of desiring deliverance from our circumstances. Sometimes, we can take control of these situations, but what about the times we can't? What are we supposed to do in situations that we can't control? We take this question with us into the passage of today Exodus 14:13-14. In this passage we find amazing insight in dealing with hard situations.
In the last scene of the book of Exodus, we see God move into the home that his people have built for him. All the uncertainty regarding God's faithfulness to his people and their faithfulness to him has been resolved. The people of God are free. God lives among them. He will lead them into the Promised Land.
As we near the end of the book of Exodus, we see the actual construction of the Tabernacle. By watching the newly formed people God work on such a significant project, we can learn a lot about how our efforts go toward bringing the presence of God into sharper focus on earth.
Beholding Jesus—even beholding the face of Jesus—is a key component of becoming more like Jesus. How then can we behold his face? Join us for Pastor Scott's message “Beholding the Glory” from Exodus 34:29-35.
How would you describe God in one sentence? What do you think are the most important things about God? When God reveals himself to us, he make it clear: He is a God overflowing with mercy and grace, looking for every opportunity to show his love. If we can grasp the depth of this truth, it will change our lives forever.
And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?” And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Sermon Summary:Do you ever wonder if your failures will keep you from receiving God's love and blessing? After Israel breaks God's covenant by worshiping the golden calf (Exodus 32), we are left wondering if they have gone too far to be forgiven. In Exodus 33, we see that Israel's failures—and ours—do not negate the promises of God.
In the story Exodus God creates his people. He frees them, gives them a law, and teaches them to worship. But very early on, they make a major mistake which threatens to ruin everything God has been working toward. In turning away from God and all the plans he has for them, the ominous question emerges of whether their mistake can be repaired. Is there a way forward? Can God forgive?
Where does God dwell? Looking back and looking ahead, we can see that God has dwelt, is dwelling, and will dwell in at least six different places. A tour of the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, will help us look for God.
After Moses went up to Sinai again, God gave him instructions for the building of a holy building. This would be a place where God Himself could dwell among his people and they could worship him. As we read the instructions and consider the construction details, we will learn how to come close to God in worship.
Is there a wrong way to approach God? In Exodus 24, we find specific instructions on how Moses and the people can come before God. The story is full of reverence and fear. In the midst of this story, we will hear the invitation of Jesus: Draw near to God through me.
As we seek walk with God, we must learn some information about God and what he expects of us. However, that information is not likely to result in action unless it is accompanied by motivation. In Exodus 23:20-33, God gives the people of Israel some motivation to follow him, and that motivation is needed for us today as well.
We were born with spiritual thirst. Spend a few minutes alone without doing anything, and you'll probably feel it. What do we do with it?
The Ten Commandments are some of the most well-known words in all of Scripture, and yet they are so easy misunderstood. As we look at these words, we will discover that they are not threats, unreasonable demands, or outdated requirements. Rather, they are a roadmap to life as it is meant to be lived.
We are about to arrive at the most important chapter in the book of Exodus: the giving of the Ten Commandments. But before we get there, God must make sure his people are ready to listen well to his instructions. As we watch him prepare the people, we will learn how important it is to prepare ourselves to hear from God and what it takes to do so.
Do you ever do things, especially too many things, because of what people expect? Do you ever do things, especially too many things, because you think you're most qualified and no one else can do them as well as you? If so, you have much in common with Moses. His father-in-law has some advice for him'and us.
A few of us, for whatever reason, care little what other people think. Most of us, however, are not immune to expectations. Some of us, in fact, are tyrannized by them. What can we do to be free? We need a vision of God. Exodus 17, as it leads us into the gospels, gives us one.
After the Egyptian army is drowned in the sea, Moses and the people sing a song of praise to God for his victory over evil. Their song is meant to be our song as well as we rejoice in the victory of God.
We look out at life, and it looks like chaos. We can't make sense of it. It's confusing. We wonder if we'll get swallowed up by the chaos if we move forward into it. The Israelites looked out at a sea of chaos. Nevertheless, the Lord commanded...
This is the climax of the story of the Exodus. God's people leave their slavery in Egypt. As God executes the tenth plague on Egypt, the Israelites are given instructions on how to find protection from God. Intermingled with the story in Egypt are...
After suffering through nine terrible plagues, Pharaoh is still unwilling to let God's people go. Why has his heart remained so hard? He is obsessed with his own glory. In Exodus 11, God shows us what he will do to win glory over Pharaoh. As we...
In the book of Exodus, the people of God are in bondage. In Egypt, even though Moses has returned in obedience to the Lord to deliver the Israelites, things have gone from bad to worse. What now? What does the Lord do in the difficult places of our...
We've already seen several of Moses's objections to God's plan for delivering the Israelites from slavery. In this chapter, as Moses takes steps in obedience, he stumbles and brings one more complaint to God. In response, God speaks to Moses about...
When Moses returned from the wilderness, the people of Israel responded positively. Things were looking up. Then they weren't. What do you do when things go from bad to worse?
In Exodus 3, Moses is given a clear yet difficult call from God. In Exodus 4, Moses tries to resist this call. Do you ever find yourself resisting God's call? What are the factors that tend to keep us from following God in faith? As we explore...
After meeting Moses in chapter 2, we see God find him in Midian and call him to a monumental task. Understandably so, this causes Moses to ask deep questions about who he is and who God is. In the answers, we find powerful help for our own struggles...
Sometimes it's hard to hang onto hope. This is how the Israelites must have felt after Pharaoh ordered the death of all of their newborn sons. Yet, in the midst of their fear, God began to break through and plant some seeds of hope. That same God...
The book of Exodus tells the story of how God freed his people from slavery and gave them a new life filled with direction and purpose. In the first chapter, we hear of three separate challenges that face the people of Israel. Each of them raises...
Week 1 of Exodus: Journey to Freedom
The battles of life tend to come out of no where, but preparing to face them can be the difference between victory and defeat. This Sunday we welcome back Pastor Jeff Mattesich, as he continues our series in Exodus: Journey to Sinai. This weekend we will look at a battle that Moses and Israel faced that can help us gain wisdom for the battles we are facing, and will face. The hopeful news is that we are not meant to battle alone!
In this bonus episode, my producer Simone turns the tables and interviews me on the show. I speak largely about my very own Urban Exodus journey, how the idea for sharing these stories began, and what impact this project has had on my life over the past ten years. We talk about the myth of making “it" in the city, my journey from Seattle to Maine, the process of creating Urban Exodus, what I've learned from interviewing hundreds of people for this project, the healing power of living close to nature, the pandemic's effect on rural spaces, and what's next for Urban Exodus.I hope you enjoy our conversation. This is a story about taking advantage of the blessings fate brings, building community, the power of storytelling to engage and inspire action, and valuing health and happiness over societal expectations.Support the show
