To be filled with the Holy Spirit is as profound as it is confusing. Typically, the notion of "being filled by the Spirit" prompts a variety of thoughts and questions: what does it mean? When does it happen? How do I know? As we continue in the Life of Jesus, A.D., Founding Pastor Ken Werlein opens Acts 2 to examine what being filled with the Holy Spirit truly means.
This week on RfRx we are getting into the spirit of the fall season by taking a social scientific look at belief in some of the spookier aspects of the supernatural: spirits and demons. Anthropologist Kara Griffin will share their experiences growing up steeped in these beliefs in fundamentalist evangelical churches, discuss the basis of belief in spirits and demons across cultures, and consider some of their uses in contemporary society. Bring your spooky questions and stories! We will save plenty of time for discussion and Q&A. Kara Griffin was born in Texas and raised in Southern Baptist, evangelical, and non-denominational mega-churches and private schools. After leaving the faith in the mid-2000s, Kara was able to pursue their passion for learning, traveling, and experiencing diverse cultures and perspectives. They holds undergraduate degrees in Psychology, International Relations, and Criminal Justice, a Master's Degree in Dispute Resolution & Conflict Management, and a PhD in Anthropology. Kara enjoys working with secular community services that support other people who may have experienced judgment, repression, or other struggles related to involvement with religious groups. At RfR, Kara volunteers as the Online Programming Director and hosts the weekly RfRx Talks sessions. In their free time, Kara can be found volunteering, teaching and lecturing at universities and conferences, reading all kinds of books (especially sci-fi), and spending time with their dog, Snow. Ephesians 5:18b All Church Retreat '22
In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay chats with Eleanor Mumford about the steady investment of her college roommate's prayers in her life that eventually led her to Jesus, and the practices in her young adult life that established her love of the Bible. Eleanor talks about becoming confirmed in the Anglican Church, the entrance of the Holy Spirit into their lives, and meeting John Wimber, learning that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is for everyone, all the time. Finally, Eleanor shares the story of persevering in confirming their call from the Lord to plant a Vineyard in the UK, and their process of submitting to authority in waiting for the blessing from Vineyard elders. Eleanor married John in 1978 after meeting at University. They trained together under John Wimber in California, before starting the first Vineyard church in Europe in 1987 (SW London Vineyard). In 2008 they handed over the leadership of that church to concentrate more on the Vineyard movement, both nationally and internationally, then in 2015 they transitioned the leadership of Vineyard Churches UK & Ireland. Together they now focus on helping facilitate the grow of the Vineyard internationally and speaking around the world. No one wants to live without love, but when God's word calls us to walk in love as he is defined by love, there will come a point it will feel weird. Weird because God's love doesn't always match our current cultural understanding of love. And yet, only when we embrace God's way of love will we experience the Holy Spirit shaping our community into a radical loving space where we experience God. Join us as we continue our journey in Ephesians of reconstructing a faith that challenges specifically shallow, self-serving communities and builds a particular community where God dwells with a certain mindset and practices. Be Continually Filled With the Spirit
To take advantage of the opportunities to proclaim Jesus provided by our cultural moment, we must draw our strength and wisdom from the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Scott confesses the tendency of many to treat the Holy Spirit as an exercise of doctrine, rather than an exercise of surrender. He asks God to give us the courage and the discipline to open ourselves more fully to His control -- extolling us to be a Spirit-led, Spirit-intoxicated, Spirit-empowered people for whom all of creation is waiting.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:15-21 ESV
The fundamental meaning of being filled with the Spirit is being filled with joy that comes from God and overflows in song.
