Episode 58 When Michelle Taylor lost her son in a tragic house fire, she thought the nightmare couldn't get worse. She was wrong. Fueled by junk science, broken forensics, and a crime lab running on expired credibility, the prosecutors turned a grieving mother into a murder suspect. Twelve debris samples. Twelve false positives. And a justice system more interested in closing a case than finding the truth. This is the story of how bad science—and worse judgment—can burn an innocent life to the ground. Michelle Taylor stands for sentencing on May 30th. The fire didn't destroy her life. The system did. A mother's grief. A lab's lies. A system that chose conviction over truth. This is Michelle Taylor's story. This podcast is a true crime podcast about arson and criminal fires. Listener discretion is recommended. The Oscars are almost here! On the thirty- seventh episode of ATFT, my friends Emm- winning photojournalist, writer/ director Samy El- Kamel, and director Craig Ienne Pedroza join this year's panel to discuss the Oscar nominated films and share our predicted winners! This episode is explicit.2024 was a mixed year for us… Cole and Craig believe 2024 was a great year for cinema while Samy and I don't quite share that opinion. This year's awards season has become plagued by various controversies and many believing this is not as competitive as last year's Oscar race. For the 2025 Academy Awards, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez earned the most nominations(13) this year whileboth The Brutalist and Wicked tied for second, earning 10 nominations each.Other films that received many nominations are Conclave, Anora, and The Substance. So many categories are up in the air with no film expected to sweep, leaving audiences torn on who will win. Will it be Sean Baker or Brady Corbet who takes home the Director Oscar? How about who will win Best Actress: Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres or Mikey Madison? These are just two of the widely debated categories. We will soon learn the answer on Sunday, March 2!This is the first time each of the ATFT regulars are all together for an episode! This is Cole's eighteenth appearance on ATFT (seventh on this wide release), Samy's eleventh (fourth on the wide release), and Craig's sixth appearance (fourth on the wide release). This is the third annual Oscars special! Cole and I recorded the 2022 Oscars special through the Relevnt app, which is currently in the vault. The first wide released Oscars special (give Episode 15 a listen) was last year's 2023 Oscars special with Cole, Craig, and past guest Lina Smith. Since the Oscars is the “Super Bowl for film fans”, this episode was aimed to be more of a Sports Center- format. This episode was recorded on February 6, 2025. Cole recently won an Emmy for his work with First Coast News on the news package “Waiting for Rebuild”! Watch the full news package here!: https://youtu.be/Pa1m0qm8h-Q. Samy's latest short film “Waveform” will be making the rounds at film festivals soon so stay tuned by following his production company on Instagram and Youtube @barefootpythonmedia! Craig recently directed the short film “Floating Daisies” which will also begin its film festival run soon. Stay updated on that project by following @floatingdaisiesfilm on Instagram and Craig on both Instagram and Youtube @iennefilm!In this episode,Cole, Samy, Craig and I go through each category and discuss our predicted winners. The categories are discussed in the order of which the categories were read at last year's Oscars. There are very few categories we unanimously agree on. Arguments are had, impressions are hilariously done, and the power of friendship lives on. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!ATFT Announcement!: All the Film Things will be back on March 26! Stay updated by following @all.the.film.things on Instagram! The first episode of the new year! On the thirty- fifth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends and ATFT regulars "unofficial co- host"/ Emmy- winning photojournalist Cole Echevarria, writer/ director Samy- El Kamel, and Samy's friend movie lover Adolfo Miranda to talk about 2024 in film! This episode is explicit and a few recent films are spoiled, especially Joker: Folie à Deux. 2023 set the bar pretty high in terms of years in film. While I believe 2024 was mostly a lackluster year in cinema, there were undisputed gems beloved by many. Most of us agreed the latter part of the year contained the best new releases compared to the beginning of the year, including films like A Real Pain, Anora, and The Substance. As previously stated, both Cole and Samy are ATFT regulars while this is Adolfo's first time on the show! More specifically, this episode marks Cole's 17th time and Samy's 10th time over the course of 81 ATFT episodes recorded thus far.!Cole, Samy, and I have reflected on past years in film for three years in a row now. Our "2022 in Film" episode is in the vault but check out Samy and I talking about "2023 in film" last year (Episode 11)! I always look forward to this yearly episode since it not only gives me an opportunity to chat with my friends but it is nice to know these episodes will act as a time capsule years from now. With each episode, the banter only gets funnier and funnier, even if it is at my expense. Cole and Samy will hopefully be back on ATFT soon for the upcoming Oscars special! Last month, Cole won an Emmy for his work with First Coast News on the news package “Waiting for Rebuild”!! Click the link to watch it!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDo6Cbvzyj4 Samy's long- anticipated short film “Waveform” will be released soon, under his production company Barefoot Python Media, but is expected to hit some film festivals so it may be a while before it is readily accessible online. Check out the teaser trailer for the short on the Barefoot Python Media YouTube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia You can also find Samy discussing his updated top ten favorite films of 2024! Last year's “2023 in Film” episode was more of a year in review. That was the intention with this episode but unfortunately we ran out of time. This episode is most entirely the four of us sharing our top favorite films of the year. Cole and I each share our top five favorites of the year while both Samy and Adolfo each shared their top ten favorites. Even though we share a few similar favorites, our lists truly vary between each other. Cole's favorites of the year have changed slightly since last June's “Film Finds” episode. Adolfo, an A24 fan, listed several A24 productions in his top ten list and also made a comparison using Conclave that thrilled me. Samy chose his favorite films carefully and, as per usual, articulately describes each of his picks in a way that will entice you to watch them soon after listening to this episode. My list was not as concrete as everyone else's but I talked about the return of one of my favorite actresses, Angelina Jolie in Pablo Larraín's Maria, before sharing my favorite film of the year which was such a controversial choice that it launched a long analytical debate. All this and more on the brand new episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

On the twenty- third episode of ATFT, my friend and photojournalist Cole Echevarria returns for the second “wide- released” edition of our segment, Film Finds! This episode spoils two 2024 films: Monkey Man and The Fall Guy. The “Film Finds” segment is ATFT in its most casual, spontaneous form as we talk about recent films we've watched with nearly nothing prepared. The last time we did a “Film Finds” episode was back in August of last year. Listen to that episode titled “Episode 3: Film Finds- August 2023 with Cole Echevarria”! This time around, I discuss a few old films I have seen since our last Film Finds episode while Cole focuses on 2024 films. This is Cole's, record- breaking, sixteenth appearance on ATFT! On this “wide release” of the show, this is Cole's sixth appearance! Check out Cole's previously “wide- released” episodes 2, 3, 10, 13, and 15! Before recording this episode, I gave Cole his long- awaited birthday present: the very first ATFT shirt! Not only is he the most frequent guest and “unofficial co- host” of the show, Cole is one of the biggest champions of this podcast. He surely makes each episode fun and brings out a less- serious version of myself. Cole has been asking for merch for a while now and, since he is both a great friend and aforementioned champion of ATFT, I wanted to make him the very first ATFT shirt individualized just for him! Check out @all.the.film.things on Instagram to see the shirt! This episode was recorded on June 10, 2024. Cole is a photojournalist based in Jacksonville, Florida. He works behind the scenes for First Coast News! While this segment is meant to be sharing the films we have recently watched, this episode went slightly awry. This episode is filled with debates, especially in the first twenty minutes or so. Those twenty or so minutes are some of the most comical ATFT has seen thus far since our banter just gets better and better. Debate topics include Cole's bold statement, “If 12 Angry Men was made today, it would be far better than the original 1957 film”, and if coloring in film is better now than back in the day when Technicolor was used. Weigh in on the debates by answering the question that appears after listening to this episode or by going to or tagging the All the Film Things Instagram! Cole also shares his top five 2024 films so far while also discussing the new films he has recently seen in theaters. Towards the end of this episode, I talk about a few of the films I have seen lately, including The Virgin Spring, Le Samouraï, and The Children's Hour. Cole and I also share some hot takes surrounding Sydney Sweeney and The Bikeriders, respectively. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Nat Glover was born in 1943, in segregated Jacksonville, Florida. At seventeen, he unknowingly headed into an angry white mob and the Ku Klux Klan attacking young black protestors staging a sit-in at a downtown whites-only lunch counter. Known as “Ax Handle Saturday,” this harrowing encounter with racism would commit him to a lifetime of fighting for justice. He joined the Jacksonville Police Department in 1966 where he was named Police Officer of the Year four times, promoted to detective, rose to sergeant, and was appointed the city's first hostage negotiator. In 1995, Duval County voters elected him the first Black sheriff in Florida since Reconstruction. Hear more about his incredible work and his new memoir, Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff. Nathaniel Glover has garnered national recognition for his community policing, ban on choke holds, and de-escalation training. Then-President Bill Clinton and U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno praised his initiatives during a walk-along with Glover in Jacksonville. He was also a mayoral candidate in 2003 and served as the 29th President of his alma mater, Edward Waters University. He was twice nominated for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Male President of the Year. The school's stadium is named the Nathaniel Glover Community Field and Stadium. He received a “Great Floridian” designation in 2016 for his dedication to law enforcement, higher education, and the city of Jacksonville. He was inducted into the Florida Law Enforcement Officer's Hall of Fame in 2021. His memoir, Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff, was released on August 22, 2023.
