Buy the book here, or here. Revolution in 35mm: Political Violence and Resistance in Cinema from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse, 1960–1990 examines how political violence and resistance was represented in arthouse and cult films from 1960 to 1990. This historical period spans the Algerian war of independence and the early wave of postcolonial struggles that reshaped the Global South, through the collapse of Soviet Communism in the late 1980s. It focuses on films related to the rise of protest movements by students, workers, and leftist groups, as well as broader countercultural movements, Black Power, the rise of feminism, and so on. The book also includes films that explore the splinter groups that engaged in violent, urban guerrilla struggles throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as the promise of widespread radical social transformation failed to materialize: the Weathermen and the Black Liberation Army in the United States, the Red Army Faction in West Germany and Japan, and Italy's Red Brigades. Many of these movements were deeply connected to culture, including cinema, and they expressed their values through it.  Twelve authors, including film critics and academics, deliver a diverse examination of how filmmakers around the world reacted to the political violence and resistance movements of the period and how this was expressed on screen. This includes looking at the production, distribution, and screening of these films, audience and critical reaction, the attempted censorship or suppression of much of this work, and how directors and producers eluded these restrictions. Including over two hundred illustrations, the book examines filmmaking movements like the French, Japanese, German, and Yugoslavian New Waves; subgenres like spaghetti westerns, Italian poliziotteschi, Blaxploitation, and mondo movies; and films that reflect the values of specific movements, including feminists, Vietnam War protesters, and Black militants. The work of influential and well-known political filmmakers such as Costa-Gavras, Gillo Pontecorvo, and Glauber Rocha is examined alongside grindhouse cinema and lesser-known titles by a host of all-but-forgotten filmmakers, including many from the Global South that deserve to be rediscovered. EPISODE 121 | Coup Coup G'joob: Civic Disturbances in the U.S. 1900 - Present This is a continuation of our previous episode about coup attempts, rebellions and civic unrest in the United States prior to the 20th century. This time, we jump into the 20th century and bring us right up to the present day. After hearing all this, you decide if things really are, as some would have you believe, the worst it's ever been, or if in fact, America has always struggled with its foundational problems and original sins, coupled with an unusual appetite for, or at least tolerance of, violence.  Like what we do? The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jeffrey Haas. A long time attorney for the People's Law Office in Illinois, Haas represented Fred Hampton and member's of Chicago's chapter of the Black Panther Party. Haas talked with Hampton and heard him speak against Racism on a regular basis. Hampton had such an impact that Haas remained dedicated to fighting to expose the government-led, White Supremacist conspiracy to assassinate the young chairman. He compiled the years of deceptions and courtroom battles in his 2010 book, The Assassination of Fed Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther. We'll discuss the role of FBI informant William O'Neal, a black male recruited to spy on black people when he was 19-years-old. O'Neal is accused of drugging Hampton the December night in 1969 when the Panther leader was killed in his sleep. He admitted to providing a detailed floor-plan of the premises. Haas describes O'Neal as a "moral eunuch." We'll discuss the years of lies to conceal this unjust murder and how Fred Hampton's assassination relates to other incidents of Chicago history, like the murder of Emmett Till and the Torture of black males by former Police chief Jon Burge. We'll be sure to ask for Mr. Haas's views on the film Judas & The Black Messiah as well as his upbringing in Racist Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Haas got riled when Gus referred to his longtime White comrade and former C.O.W.S. guest Bill Ayers as a criminal. Ayers, as a part of The Weathermen, was complicit in the bombing of the Pentagon and the US Capitol building. This is the same sort of minimizing and absolving of White Terrorist behavior we've been discussing with Columbine and Chicago native Ted 'Unabomber' Kaczynski. #LenardClark #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Sue Hagedorn arrived on Block Island for the first time on a boat named, “Tor” (“Rot” spelled backwards). Sue and her family would cruise around Long Island Sound, land on Block Island and simply hang out. A self-proclaimed hippie, Sue definitely stuck out like a sore thumb amongst her family's well-healed Yacht club friends. But that never bothered Sue much. Sue graduated college in 1967 as the summer of love kicked into full swing and took a job at Harvard. It was there she became a member of the radical activist group The Weathermen and took part in certain activities which landed her in the clink. Her stories from this period are beyond epic.  With her “Wild Years” mostly behind her Sue has since lived a few different lives. From nurse to documentary film maker her path has been anything but straight and narrow. Smash the “Play” button to hear the rest.

Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out: Timothy Leary's 1981 Talk at Esalen

Voices of Esalen

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2023 48:48

Today we're proud to present a recording from the Esalen archives: Timothy Leary, speaking to a rapt audience in June of 1981. Leary rose to national prominence in the early 1960's, as a clinical psychologist from Harvard who along with Richard Alpert was eventually fired for introducing students to mushrooms and LSD. After his dismissal from the realm of the Ivy League, Leary's mystique only grew. In 1964, Leary and Alpert visited Esalen for the first time, where they ended up taking LSD with among others, Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy. In 1966, Leary attempted unsuccessfully to form a religion based around the idea of LSD as a sacrament, which would have legally protected the use of LSD. His legal troubles had already begun by this point. While at Millbrook he endured raids and arrests, engineered by the local district attorney, G. Gordon Liddy, who would later become famous as one of Nixon's dirty tricks squad and an engineer of the Watergate break-ins. In January of 1967, he attended the Human Be-In in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, where he delivered the now famous invitation to tune in, turn on, and drop out. It became kind of a catch phrase for Leary and a shorthand for the psychedelic movement. In 1968 his story began to get truly crazy. He was arrested in Laguna Beach for possession of marijuana, he appealed the conviction, and then somehow in 1970, he received a ten year sentence for the infraction. He went to jail and then in September of the same year the leftist revolutionary group the Weathermen smuggled him out of jail . Leary ended up in Algeria, where he paid Eldrige Cleaver and the Black Panther Party to protect him, but Cleaver ended up putting him under house arrest, due to “exasperation with his socialite lifestyle.” In 1971 Leary and his wife fled to Switzerland, aided, abetted, and ultimately imprisoned by an arms dealer; in 72, Richard Nixon's AG John Erlichman convinced the Swiss government to imprison him, but ultimately was not able to extradite Leary. He ended up in Afghanistan, where the US government finally seized him. He was transported to Folsom State prison , where he was placed in a cell next to Charles Manson. In order to shorten his prison sentence, he became an FBI informant. In 1974, Allen Ginsberg, Richard Alpert, and Leary's son denounced him a “cop informant” and a paranoid schizophrenic. In 1976, Governor Jerry Brown released Leary from prison, whereupon he moved to Laurel Canyon, got re-married to filmmaker Barbara Blum, and took on Winona Ryder as his goddaughter. He started touring and lecturing, speaking about his new interests, which included space colonization, life extension, and virtual reality. He even teamed up with G. Gordon Liddy, an ex-convict himself by this point, to debate issues like gay rights, abortion, and welfare. And this is where we find ourselves with Leary, visiting Esalen for the first time in 17 years, in 1981. I think you'll find this speech entertaining, thought-provoking, and ultimately very enjoyable. I know I did. He's the high priest of LSD, speaking to an audience of highly sympathetic hippies and weirdos in the Reagan 80's.

Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic. This is our Tame One Tribute. We hope you enjoy it! I hope everyone is doing well this week after yet another school shooting killed 19 kids.  I'm not going to get into specifics but I do think it is important to acknowledge the loss that has taken place. This comes 10 days after 10 people were killed in a mass shooting in Buffalo. This isn't good, and it appears we are all too comfortable with seeing this crap on the news.  Just to give you some perspective this was the 27th school shooting so far this year... To keep things as light as possible, this week we will focus on a few bombings on US soil and their impacts.
