The first three games of the Memphis basketball season have revealed plenty about these Tigers.  Want a weekly breakdown of all things Grizzlies, Tigers and 901 FC? Consider subscribing to our Memphis Sports newsletter. Most notably, despite all of the team's flaws, Penny Hardaway and Co. are still very good. We've also learned, however, that with a little work, a few adjustments in certain areas and maybe some more time together, the Tigers' ceiling could be among the five highest in the country.  On this week's episode of the Tiger Basketball Podcast, beat writer Jason Munz and columnist Mark Giannotto examine what's gone right (Emoni Bates and the team's shooting ability), what needs to be addressed (turnovers, point guard and Hardaway's rotations), and what's possible if and when everything aligns for Memphis.

Co-hosts Mark Giannotto and Jason Munz break down the lineup combinations that were most effective and least effective in Tuesday's win over Tennessee Tech, discuss Memphis' upcoming matchup with North Carolina Central, and identify the biggest difference between these Tigers and Penny Hardaway's first three teams.

The Memphis basketball team achieved its highest preseason Associated Press Top 25 ranking in a decade this week.  Thirty-four of the AP's 63 voters had the 12th-ranked Tigers inside their top 10. The team even showed up on one ballot at No. 2 in the country, according to collegepolltracker.com. But seven voters did not include Memphis anywhere in their top 25.  On this week's episode of the Tiger Basketball Podcast, beat writer Jason Munz is joined by Tiger football beat writer Evan Barnes and preps beat writer Khari Thompson to analyze what Memphis' preseason rankings mean and discuss whether the Tigers should have been ranked higher than 12th. In addition, the trio gets into the signature Memphis Madness moments, previews Sunday's exhibition game against LeMoyne-Owen and predicts Penny Hardaway's starting lineup.

It's one thing to see it on paper, but it's something else entirely to observe it up close and personal.  If anything was made clear by watching the Memphis basketball team practice last week, it's how deep the Tigers' roster will be this season. Even without veteran guard Alex Lomax and high-profile transfer Earl Timberlake on the floor during the Memphis Rebounders Club's Happy Hour Hoops event, Penny Hardaway showed off a collection of players that is built to endure almost anything thrown their way.  On this week's episode of the Tiger Basketball Podcast, beat writer Jason Munz and columnist Mark Giannotto delve into a variety of topics, including the Tigers' depth – especially within the context of what the starting lineup could look like and who Hardaway will decide to go with as his primary sixth man – the team's schedule and which players stand to benefit most from the program's upcoming Pro Day.

In episode 110 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GoTigers247 digital content creator Kenny Stubblefield recap Memphis' last-second loss to UTSA and break down the Tigers' first preseason practice of the season. After a 3-0 start and a win over Mississippi State, Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield and the Tigers underwent a painful loss against UTSA on Saturday. Despite taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, Memphis took its foot off the gas and allowed the Roadrunners to come back. Throughout the football discussion, Stubblefield explains what the energy was like inside the Liberty Bowl, and Fowler gives his opinion on what this loss means for Memphis. Following the loss, the Tigers will begin conference play on Saturday against Temple. Next, the duo breaks down the open practice that both GT247 crew members were at on Tuesday. The crew was able to watch Jalen Duren and Emoni Bates and the rest of the Tigers practice, and it was a very impressive event. Memphis is clearly extremely long, athletic and talented, and they have an opportunity to be among the best teams in the country this season. They have an incredible balance of experience, depth, young talent and leadership. Penny Hardaway has the most talented team he's ever coached, which should be a lot of fun to watch this year. Penny Hardaway and his staff have done it once again. The No. 1 overall player in the 2022 class, Jalen Duren, has made his commitment to Memphis. Needless to say, this is absolutely massive for the future of the Memphis basketball program. Duren recently took official visits to Kentucky, Memphis and Miami, but Hardaway and the Tigers' staff clearly made the biggest impression. The professional route was also a possibility for Duren, who was offered big money to skip out on college. Simply put, Duren is arguably the best high school prospect in the world. With his decision to Memphis now official, all signs point to Duren reclassifying from 2022 to 2021 which means he will be on campus as soon as possible. With Duren likely to be on roster for the 2021-2022 season, Memphis just got much better in the front court. Although the national media hasn't been sure about Memphis going into the season, Duren should change that. The No. 1 overall player will immediately make the Tigers one of the better teams in the country. The five-star is physically dominant in the paint, and he is already built like a brick wall. Duren has been dominating on the AAU circuit alongside generational talent Emoni Bates. Duren and Bates make up one of the most formidable AAU duos in recent memory as both players are nearly unstoppable at the high school level. Although Bates has been ranked as the No. 1 player for quite some time, Duren jumped him in the most recent 247Sports rankings update. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

July 1, 2021, truly signals a watershed day for college athletes. Now every NCAA athlete can profit off their name, image and likeness, as the NCAA officially pushed through a temporary rule that enables all schools to determine (unless their state laws mandate otherwise) how student-athletes can legally make money while still in college. It's a huge day, and we've got a long conversation on that. The interesting, the funny, the fallout and more. That's the first 36 minutes of this podcast. Then Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander get to Penny Hardaway (38:00) staying at Memphis, despite recently interviewing for the Orlando Magic job, and hiring 80-year-old Larry Brown to his staff in the process. The guys close with some news and notes from this week on important players (51:00) staying or going with top 25-level programs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Aaron discusses a historic day in college sports as "Name, Image, Likeness" comes in - and asks the biggest questions surrounding the new NIL rules. Then he discusses Penny Hardaway's return to Memphis (and decision to hire Larry Brown) and an update on Jalen Duren's recruitment. Plus, his old friend Nick Coffey re-visits the show. Here is a full rundown of the show:* Biggest questions on Name, Image, Likeness: Thursday is a historic day in college sports, as amateurism is dead and players are able to sign endorsement deals thanks to new Name, Image, Likeness rules (2:30). Aaron asks some of the biggest questions about the day's news including, what dollar figure will the best athletes demand, why these new NIL rules will be a major wake-up call to athletes, and why a bunch of athletes you've never heard of may end up being the highest paid. Also, he goes into detail on why NIL will be good overall for the health of college sports.  Penny Hardaway and Larry Brown: Next, we circle back with Penny Hardaway, who this week decided to turn down the NBA and return to Memphis (26:00). Aaron explains what he believes went down, why the NBA might have been used as leverage to hire Larry Brown (against his university's wishes) and why the pressure is officially on Penny to win now in Memphis.  Jalen Duren update: Aaron also quickly updates the recruitment of the top high school basketball player in America, Jalen Duren (33:00). Duren just finished a trip to Kentucky, and Aaron has an update. Plus, why Miami is a bigger player than many people realize.  Nick Coffey joins the show: Finally, Aaron is joined by his buddy and local Louisville radio host Nick Coffey (43:30). The guys discuss the impacts (good and bad) of NIL, Penny Hardaway's weird week and just how excited they are for the start of college football and whether an expanded playoff will actually help, or more likely hurt, the sport.

It's a LOADED Monday Aaron Torres Podcast! Aaron explains why he is coming around to the idea of a 12-team College Football Playoff, what he knows about Jalen Duren's potential reclassification and why Penny Hardaway might be pursuing an NBA coaching job. Here is a full rundown of today's show:More details on the 12-team College Football Playoff proposal: Last week Aaron discussed the proposed 12-team College Football Playoff - but late last week, we got more details, and Aaron explains why the idea is growing on him (2:30). He gives five reasons why 12 might be the right number from better regular season games, to fewer opt outs and more teams and fans invested later in the season. He also shares a few concerns about the 12-team playoff as well and still wonders if eight teams is the right number for an expanded playoff. Is Jalen Duren reclassifying? Is Penny Hardaway headed to the NBA?: Next, Aaron hits on two major topics from the college hoops weekend. On last episode Aaron shared his impressions of the No. 1 high school player in America Jalen Duren and briefly talked about the potential he reclassifies (26:00). This weekend those reports picked up steam, and Aaron hits the topic from all angles. What are the chances Duren does reclassify and if so, what schools make the most sense? Finally he discusses a report from Adrian Wojnarowski (aka "Woj") that Penny Hardaway may be considering NBA jobs. Aaron tells you some intel he's heard - and explains why it's more likely than many believe (48:00). Today's episode is brought to you by ManScaped:If you're looking for a Father's Day gift, go to ManScaped.com for all the best products in the "below the waist" grooming category.
