Hello cinephiles, occasional film- goers and everyone in between- Welcome to All the Film Things! I’m your host Elizabeth Wildes and here we talk about anything film- related! Some episodes are interviews, some are more casual, and some are analytical. By expanding this podcast outside of the Relevnt app, I plan on not only have my friends on as guests but also professionals in the film industry. Directors, actors, writers, editors, casting directors, film professors, cinematographers- anyone whose work revolves around film is welcome to be a guest! I hope you enjoy and let's talk film!
On the forty- first episode of All the Film Things, I talked with the Film Production Coordinator for the City of Jacksonville, director/ editor Adam Madrid! Adam Madrid, who some of us regard as “the king of Jacksonville”, is an integral figure in Jacksonville who started out working as a freelancer making films, music videos, and even commercials for the Jacksonville Jaguars before becoming the Film Production Coordinator for the City of Jacksonville last year. He has been awarded the Art Innovator Award by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville in 2023 and is amongst this year's Leadership Jacksonville class. Alongside his wife Monique, Adam is the City Producer for the 48 hour film project in Jacksonville and the co- founder of the LOL Jacksonville Film Festival. Adam is also the co- founder of the production company Argyle Forest Films and directs, co- produces, and co- edits every versatile film made under the company including “A Novel Idea” and “No Laughing Matter”, which won the Jacksonville 48 hour film project in 2014 leading the short to be screened at Filmapalooza in Hollywood the next year.Adam's directorial feature debut, Let Me Be Corey, is a comedy film that's been six years in the making! The film will be out very soon and I'll keep you all updated on its release on the ATFT Instagram! While you're waiting for Let Me Be Corey to premiere and later hit streaming, check out some of Adam's past work on the Argyle Forest Films Youtube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@ArgyleForestFilms This is Adam's first appearance on ATFT! Adam and I met about a year ago at Jax Film Bar. It was very casual as, if I remember correctly, we were just eating dinner and someone between us had got up so we briefly talked and now, as I've gotten to know him a little more, I am seriously in awe of his journey and his passion for Jacksonville. He is the community leader this city needs and his dedication along with his motivated mindset is going to elevate Jacksonville to the film city it is. Every time I have the pleasure of chatting with him I feel inspired and motivated, especially since he's been a champion of this podcast which I cannot be more grateful for his support. This episode was recorded on April 24, 2025. In this episode, Adam talks about how his motivation and passion for filmmaking got him to where he is today, as a leading figure in the Jacksonville film industry. Filmmakers, specifically those in the 904 area, will especially benefit from Adam's interview and will be inspired to keep making films and spread the word about the city. Adam also explains the tax incentives for filming in Jacksonville, the current state of the arts in Jacksonville universities, and how he's spread the word about Jacksonville all around the world. We also discuss beloved comedy actors in stellar dramatic roles, our shared appreciation for Claire Danes, and teasing what's to come for the Jacksonville's film scene, and much more! On the fortieth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with professor/ author James Miller! James Miller is a liberal studies professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He wrote music reviews for Rolling Stone in the 70s and spent much of the 80s reviewing books and writing pop music criticism for Newsweek. Among Jim's many accomplishments, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and his work continues to be published in magazines, peer- reviewed academic journals, and newspapers. Jim has written several books over the course of his decades- spanning career focused on various subject matters from philosophy (Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche) to politics (Can Democracy Work? A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World) to music. His book Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock & Roll won the ASCAP- Deems Taylor Award for the best music book written of 1999.Jim's latest book, the first he's written focused on film, is titled The Passion of Pedro Almodóvar: A Self- Portrait in Seven Films and will be published through Columbia University Press on April 29. Through this book, Jim examines the work, and by extension self, of Almodóvar through his most personal films. This book will be available for purchase wherever books are sold so preorder your copy now on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.! You'll definitely want to click this link to preorder the book on Barnes & Noble!: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-passion-of-pedro-almodovar-james-miller/1146504374;jsessionid=473B373D1171A12E15F5B951CC989AA7.prodny_store01-atgap07 If you're in the New York area, Jim will be sitting down with Robert Polito for an hour- long conversation on pub day about his book at the New School at 6 pm. Learn more about this event by clicking this link!: https://event.newschool.edu/booklunchjimmillerThis is Jim's first appearance on ATFT! I wouldn't have had the opportunity to interview him without two- time ATFT guest, film historian Max Alvarez presenting me with this opportiunity. I'm very grateful to him and Sarah C. Noell of Columbia University Press for helping bring this interview into fruition. Before reading Jim's book, I had seen three Almodóvar films and the latter two, Parallel Mothers (2021) and All About My Mother (1999), blew me away. For a few years now, I had been wanting to go through Almodóvar's work but his films are not so easy to come by. Reading Jim's brilliant, analytical book was the perfect opportunity to finally dive in, leaving me completely changed. Why aren't people talking about Almodóvar?! Quentin Tarantino was right when he said Almodóvar is largely underrated in the US. This episode was recorded on April 3, 2025. In this episode, Jim shares incredible stories from his career from gettign a private concert from Paul McCartney to inspiring a Jimi Hendrix song. We talk about some of cinema's greatest filmmakers, such as Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock, before discussing the work of Pedro Almodóvar for much of the episode. Filmmakers and film aficionados will especially enjoy this episode. Jim also talks about the impact of Michelangelo Antoninoni's Blow-up (1966) , Almodóvar's dynamic with muse Penélope Cruz, and inspiring Tom Hayden to write his memoir. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!P.S.) If you're listening on Spotify, share your thoughts on Pedro Almodóvar in the comments! ATFT is back! On the thirty- ninth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with Black female filmmaker Shanita Brown! Shanita Brown is an award- winning Daytona-based filmmaker who has written and directed nine films so far. She has had quite a journey getting to where she is today. For one thing, she initially pursued a career in law with her passion being to help people. Even though she earned both Bachelor's and Masters law degrees, Shanita's life took a different route, and she found herself helping people through film instead. Before making her own films, Shanita worked in various roles on and off camera for ten years. In 2022, she released her first short film “Mine Since Birth” which had a successful film festival run. Ever since, she has continued to make her own short films, star and/ or work behind the scenes. In March 2023, Shanita was one of eight women honored at the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum in New Smyrna Beach for their reception centered on "Young Women to Set Your Sight On". She is also the Content Manager for the streaming service Gen X TV and was recently named the manager of the Cinematique theater in Daytona. Shanita's latest project is the drama short, “Tha Bone Collecta”. The short, inspired by real life, is focused around a group of close, longtime friends. One friend in the group, Shanita's character Laura Queen, learns the secrets of individuals within the group and causes drama by revealing it to other friends, making her “the bone collecta”. For this project, Shanita directed, wrote, starred in, and produced the film. While the film stars a great ensemble of women, this is the first time Shanita has starred as the lead in one of her own films! “Tha Bone Collecta” has just begun its film festival run and is expected to release on Gen X TV once the festival run is finished! The film will be having a premiere on Saturday, April 12 at the AMC Altamonte near Orlando, Florida, so if you're in the area or want to make the trip, go to the premiere! While you're waiting for “Tha Bone Collecta” to be available on streaming, check out some of Shanita's past work on Gen X TV and the Shanita Brown Films Youtube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC92QB5m4bFUYvj4IEHMuqJw Shanita loves connecting with filmmakers so if you want to work with her, reach out to her on Instagram @ShanitaABrown on Instagram or follow her on Facebook under her name Shanita A. Brown! This is Shanita's first appearance on ATFT! We met working together on the set of the short film "Time Will Tell" (alongside past ATFT guests Vesta Millard and Manny Plaza- Fernandez)! From our first conversation, I gained so much from talking with her. Aside from one, admittedly, hilarious prank she pulled on me, she was so kind and I always looked forward to coming to set just to converse with her. We instantly connected and Shanita is without a doubt one of the best people I've been fortunate enough to meet on set. I had been wanting to interview her ever since I met her but I waited until the very end of the shoot to ask her which made for a funny moment at dinner after word got out about my podcast. There were a few technical difficulties in regard to the audio so I apologize that it is not the same quality as usual. This episode was recorded on March 20, 2025. In this episode, Shanita shares her journey from initially aspiring to become a lawyer to working in the industry to making her own films. Filmmakers will especially benefit from Shanita's stories and mindset navigating the industry. Shanita also talks about her love of Halle Berry, having no fear when it comes to the horror genre, working with Brad Pitt on his new film F1, and her biggest- and perhaps surprising- career goal. The Oscars are almost here! On the thirty- seventh episode of ATFT, my friends Emm- winning photojournalist, writer/ director Samy El- Kamel, and director Craig Ienne Pedroza join this year's panel to discuss the Oscar nominated films and share our predicted winners! This episode is explicit.2024 was a mixed year for us… Cole and Craig believe 2024 was a great year for cinema while Samy and I don't quite share that opinion. This year's awards season has become plagued by various controversies and many believing this is not as competitive as last year's Oscar race. For the 2025 Academy Awards, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez earned the most nominations(13) this year whileboth The Brutalist and Wicked tied for second, earning 10 nominations each.Other films that received many nominations are Conclave, Anora, and The Substance. So many categories are up in the air with no film expected to sweep, leaving audiences torn on who will win. Will it be Sean Baker or Brady Corbet who takes home the Director Oscar? How about who will win Best Actress: Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres or Mikey Madison? These are just two of the widely debated categories. We will soon learn the answer on Sunday, March 2!This is the first time each of the ATFT regulars are all together for an episode! This is Cole's eighteenth appearance on ATFT (seventh on this wide release), Samy's eleventh (fourth on the wide release), and Craig's sixth appearance (fourth on the wide release). This is the third annual Oscars special! Cole and I recorded the 2022 Oscars special through the Relevnt app, which is currently in the vault. The first wide released Oscars special (give Episode 15 a listen) was last year's 2023 Oscars special with Cole, Craig, and past guest Lina Smith. Since the Oscars is the “Super Bowl for film fans”, this episode was aimed to be more of a Sports Center- format. This episode was recorded on February 6, 2025. Cole recently won an Emmy for his work with First Coast News on the news package “Waiting for Rebuild”! Watch the full news package here!: https://youtu.be/Pa1m0qm8h-Q. Samy's latest short film “Waveform” will be making the rounds at film festivals soon so stay tuned by following his production company on Instagram and Youtube @barefootpythonmedia! Craig recently directed the short film “Floating Daisies” which will also begin its film festival run soon. Stay updated on that project by following @floatingdaisiesfilm on Instagram and Craig on both Instagram and Youtube @iennefilm!In this episode,Cole, Samy, Craig and I go through each category and discuss our predicted winners. The categories are discussed in the order of which the categories were read at last year's Oscars. There are very few categories we unanimously agree on. Arguments are had, impressions are hilariously done, and the power of friendship lives on. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!ATFT Announcement!: All the Film Things will be back on March 26! Stay updated by following @all.the.film.things on Instagram! On the thirty- seventh episode of ATFT, I talked with actress/ producer Michelle Calloway! While I wouldn't say this episode is explicit, there is some occasional language. Michelle Calloway is an artistic filmmaker based in Jacksonville who has been steadily working in the film industry since graduating Columbia College in Chicago with a degree in photography. She initially started working behind the camera in both film and photography but, in recent years as she has made her own films, has stepped in front of the camera. Like Richard Avedon, Michelle's short films explore the inner complexity of the human condition outwardly through visual storytelling. Michelle's sophomore short titled “Belle Isle” had a successful, worldwide festival run and earned her the award for “Best Experimental Short” at the Independent Shorts Awards in Los Angeles. Michelle has also starred in various other shorts such as “The Weary Time Traveler”, "The Resident", and “Southern Glen” but has recently made her feature film debut in Rachel Suissa's comedy Greek Mothers Never Die, which is currently in the middle of a film festival run and recently won the "Best Comedy Feature" award at the Central Florida Film Festival. Aside from her work in film, Michelle is signed with two modeling agencies, Posewell Model & Talent Management and The Peak Agency, and has been featured in commercials and advertisements. Michelle has been established as one of Jacksonville's most prominent filmmakers whose success will only continue upwards as her work ethic and genuine, singular artistry will take her far. Michelle's latest project is the drama short film, “Tallulah Park”. Named after a real park in Jacksonville, this poetic short is focused on Michelle's character Olivia as she struggles to find herself as she is haunted by her past. After a transformative chance encounter, her mindset changes leading her to seek redemption. Like Michelle's previous shorts, the internal complexity of her character is explored outwardly, but this time through found music and lyrical writing. For this project, Michelle wore three hats as she wrote, starred, and produced this film. “Tallulah Park” has just begun its film festival run and is expected to have a premiere in Jacksonville at a later date. While you're waiting for “Tallulah Park” to be released, go to LulahFilms.com to learn more about Michelle's production company as well as watch her past work! This is Michelle's first appearance on ATFT! We have been connected on Instagram for at least a year now but it wasn't until we recorded this interview that we met in person! Just by following her on Instagram, I knew Michelle was cool and authentic but when I met her in person, I saw how much of a boss she is while remaining incredibly kind. I have the utmost respect for her because of her confident attitude as well as her strong work ethic. I aspire to carry myself in this way as my shy self often hides my specificity and decisiveness. This interview was without a doubt one of the best interviews on ATFT thus far and one I have gained the most from so I am sure all creatives will take away something from listening. This episode was recorded on January 16, 2025. In this episode, Michelle talks about the evolution of her artistry between photography and film through the years. Even though Michelle claims she is not a cinephile, she certainly knows some hidden gems which turns into a game throughout this episode. Michelle also talks about how her initial fear of acting transformed her, working with Brittany Murphy on one of her last films, and how she has turned her creative work into a successful business. On the thirty- sixth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends filmmaker/ Letterboxd Patron member Freddy Burgos and movie critic Matthieu Côté to talk about cinema etiquette and experiences! This episode is explicit. As passionate cinephiles, going to the cinema is one of the most cherished experiences. There's nothing like seeing a film the way it's meant to be seen: on a big screen with surround sound. Various factors like streaming and Covid have caused a decline in the movie theater business which effectively led to a decline in cinema etiquette. Cinema etiquette has become a prominent talking point as of late online. There's been debate surrounding if it's alright to sing during musicals, if it is acceptable to take photos of the theater screen, and much more… which is exactly what we unpack in this episode along with sharing our own cinema experiences. This is both Freddy and Matthieu's second times on the show! Freddy was a guest on ATFT last year alongside his brother artist Bernardo Goya to talk about Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) while Matthieu's first appearance was two months ago to discuss Le Samouraï (1967) to celebrate Noirvember. Both have been looking forward to being back on the show for a little while now and I knew this was a perfect topic for the three of us. Matthieu and I became instant friends since recording our Le Samouraï episode and ever since, we often chat about film and what films we have seen in theaters. We have similar movie theater pet peeves, especially since we both revel in the experience of going to the cinema alone. Freddy was a perfect guest for this episode because he goes on “cinematic pilgrimages”, meaning he will travel far and wide to see a film in the best possible format. I greatly respect his dedication to cinema and in this episode, he talks about a few of his cinematic pilgrimages. Actually, he had just gotten back from traveling to see The Brutalist (2024) a day or two before recording this episode! I'm very grateful to them both for joining me for this episode. While this episode topic has been in the works for a little while now, the planning of recording it was pretty last minute due to initial plans of recording an analytical episode went awry. This episode was recorded on January 3, 2025. Freddy is a filmmaker who has been taking a little bit of a break but is already working on his next project! Check out some of his past work by subscribing to his YouTube channel, Fresh Lad Collective, by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@freshladcollective. Freddy is also a Letterboxd Patron member and regularly shares reviews and comments about the films he watches. Follow him on Letterboxd by clicking https://letterboxd.com/burgitoes/! Matthieu has been killing it on YouTube lately. He's been interviewing filmmaker after filmmaker whose films are Oscar- eligible this year! In addition to interviews, you'll find excellent analytical film reviews. You definitely want to subscribe to his channel so click here!: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272 As previously mentioned, we unpack certain topics that fall under the cinema etiquette category that are up for debate from snacks to seating to children. Throughout the episode, especially in the beginning, we share our own theater experiences. Freddy's stories start off very unexpectedly as he shares a story from his childhood, Matthieu recounts his favorite movie theater memory that involve one of his favorite directors, and I fondly remembered the first time I saw a Christopher Nolan film in theaters. Also in this episode, we talk about filmmakers like Nolan who have championed the cinema experience, what theaters can do to improve, and the theater rule that one of us continuously breaks. The first episode of the new year! On the thirty- fifth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends and ATFT regulars "unofficial co- host"/ Emmy- winning photojournalist Cole Echevarria, writer/ director Samy- El Kamel, and Samy's friend movie lover Adolfo Miranda to talk about 2024 in film! This episode is explicit and a few recent films are spoiled, especially Joker: Folie à Deux. 2023 set the bar pretty high in terms of years in film. While I believe 2024 was mostly a lackluster year in cinema, there were undisputed gems beloved by many. Most of us agreed the latter part of the year contained the best new releases compared to the beginning of the year, including films like A Real Pain, Anora, and The Substance. As previously stated, both Cole and Samy are ATFT regulars while this is Adolfo's first time on the show! More specifically, this episode marks Cole's 17th time and Samy's 10th time over the course of 81 ATFT episodes recorded thus far.!Cole, Samy, and I have reflected on past years in film for three years in a row now. Our "2022 in Film" episode is in the vault but check out Samy and I talking about "2023 in film" last year (Episode 11)! I always look forward to this yearly episode since it not only gives me an opportunity to chat with my friends but it is nice to know these episodes will act as a time capsule years from now. With each episode, the banter only gets funnier and funnier, even if it is at my expense. Cole and Samy will hopefully be back on ATFT soon for the upcoming Oscars special! Last month, Cole won an Emmy for his work with First Coast News on the news package “Waiting for Rebuild”!! Click the link to watch it!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDo6Cbvzyj4 Samy's long- anticipated short film “Waveform” will be released soon, under his production company Barefoot Python Media, but is expected to hit some film festivals so it may be a while before it is readily accessible online. Check out the teaser trailer for the short on the Barefoot Python Media YouTube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia You can also find Samy discussing his updated top ten favorite films of 2024! Last year's “2023 in Film” episode was more of a year in review. That was the intention with this episode but unfortunately we ran out of time. This episode is most entirely the four of us sharing our top favorite films of the year. Cole and I each share our top five favorites of the year while both Samy and Adolfo each shared their top ten favorites. Even though we share a few similar favorites, our lists truly vary between each other. Cole's favorites of the year have changed slightly since last June's “Film Finds” episode. Adolfo, an A24 fan, listed several A24 productions in his top ten list and also made a comparison using Conclave that thrilled me. Samy chose his favorite films carefully and, as per usual, articulately describes each of his picks in a way that will entice you to watch them soon after listening to this episode. My list was not as concrete as everyone else's but I talked about the return of one of my favorite actresses, Angelina Jolie in Pablo Larraín's Maria, before sharing my favorite film of the year which was such a controversial choice that it launched a long analytical debate. All this and more on the brand new episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
On the thirty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with writer/ director/ editor Franklin Ritch! Franklin Ritch, one of Jacksonville's most prominent filmmakers, has worn many hats since he was a child. Once he was gifted a video camera by his grandmother for Christmas, there was no slowing Franklin down. His earliest projects were stop motion shorts, and he continued to make films through middle school and high school. His work only proved more versatile in terms of stories, characters, and genres when making a series of short films, such as "Bedridden" and "New Wings: A Batgirl Fan Film" under his production company Last Resort Ideas. Franklin's debut feature film, The Artifice Girl, had quite a successful film festival run. Franklin has been named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine. Franklin is without a doubt on the rise and a filmmaker who I'm sure you'll be hearing more about in the years to come. Franklin's latest project is the highly- anticipated sci- fi short film, "Last Weekend". The short is set in the distant future where aliens have taken over Earth while humans live in reservations and follows two aliens who approach humans intending to help… but the humans are skeptical. While the plot is mostly under wraps at the moment, the film is largely a commentary on colonialism, specifically the treatment of indigenous communities in America. Franklin directed, wrote, and edited this film. "Last Weekend" reunites the team behind The Artifice Girl, including actors David Girard and Tatum Matthews. If you look closely in the final scene, you may spot past ATFT guest, Bernardo Goya! "Last Weekend "is currently in the midst of a film festival run and is expected to release this Winter! While you're waiting for "Last Weekend" to be posted on YouTube, check out Franklin's past work on the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/c/LastResortIdeas This is Franklin's first appearance on ATFT! We were introduced through our mutual friend, Bassel Jadaa, nearly a year ago at joint WIFT x Jacksonville Film Bar event. It was in this first meeting that I asked Franklin to come on the show, for which he was absolutely down for, and over the course of the year I've gotten to know him by chatting with him monthly at Film Bar. He's one of the people I look forward to chatting with most each month since, aside from being very kind and humble, we both share a strong passion for cinema. Since we mostly talk about cinema rather than our own work, it wasn't until I started preparing for this episode that I realized just how brilliant and rare of a filmmaker Franklin is. The Artifice Girl was without a doubt remarkable, ahead- of- its- time debut feature film, but watching Franklin's films and videos from high school is what blew me away. There is not one bad film or video posted through the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel. His early work is incredibly well made in all aspects from writing to acting to special effects, proving how gifted he is as a filmmaker. For this reason, this was one of the most exciting interviews I have ever had the pleasure of conducting. This episode was recorded on December 5, 2024. In this episode, Franklin talks about his connection to film and filmmaking as well as his early work up to his recent projects such as The Artifice Girl. Up and coming filmmakers will greatly benefit from learning about Franklin and his drive to making his cinematic dreams a reality. Franklin also talks about his integral relationship with frequent collaborator Britt McTammany, what he gained as a filmmaker from being on the set of his mentor Mike Flanagan's new film The Life of Chuck, and why the end of each of his films contain a credit for “Marlon Brando's chest”. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
On the thirty- third episode of ATFT, my friends philosopher pirate Daniel Carbonell- Sifontes and filmmaker/ video editor Max McBride join me on the third edition of the “fan- favorite” ATFT segment, #FilmTwitter Trends! Later in the episode, ATFT regular writer/ director Samy El- Kamel joins the conversation as a surprise guest! This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers. Towards the end of last year, there was this trend going around #FilmTwitter (with the platform now called X) where someone would post a decade and list their favorite film each year of that decade. Nearly every decade became a trend at this time and it became a fun thing to think about and then answer. I told Daniel about this trend which led to us three recording the 90s version back in March. Listen to Episode 17 to hear our 90s favorites! We enjoyed recording it so much that we decided to take on the next decade: the 2000s. It is the decade in which we grew up in so there are some nostalgic, core favorites from childhood along with more serious films we discovered when we got older. That being said, we have many similar favorites but also a lot of different picks. Both Daniel and Max have been guests on ATFT several times each but this is both of their second times on the “wide release” of this podcast! This episode was originally around 2 hours and 20 minutes so this conversation was definitely trimmed down. Daniel is currently in grad school in Denver and has long been an excellent photographer. Max is currently developing a short film and has a YouTube channel where he posts short films and documentaries as well as videos focused on his interests such as Dungeons and Dragons. He is expected to release an important video soon so be sure to subscribe to his channel by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/@maxleevideo/featured. Also be sure to follow Daniel's photography Instagram @allmynegativesarehere. This episode was recorded on May 13, 2024. In this episode, Daniel, Max, and I go through our list of 2000s film favorites and discuss them briefly as well as talking about other 2000s films. Daniel and Max especially more often had similar 2000s favorites, connecting over big franchises like Spy Kids and Star Trek. One franchise we all continuously revel in discussing: Harry Potter. A few of the significant, widely well- recieved films discussed were The Pianist, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and There Will Be Blood. Some short tangents include whether we prefer watching films alone or with others, the optimal movie length (in which I roll my eyes), and celebrity crushes. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
On the thirty- second episode of ATFT, I talk with actor/ director/ producer/ writer Brandon Gibson! Brandon Gibson, who is Los Angeles- based, has taken on many roles in a variety of mediums across over two decades working in show business. Brandon started his career in the industry as a stand up comedian, earning a stand up special on NBC at only 16 years old. He then ventured into acting in films, television shows (including Black-ish, Cobra Kai, and Lessons in Chemistry), and over 70 national commercials, for companies such as Wal- Mart, Airbnb, and Geico. Brandon also has his own production company, FunnyBrand777 Productions, and an acting studio called Above the Line studio. Check out Brandon's demo reels as well as more information on both his production company and acting studio here!: https://brandon-gibson.com Brandon's latest project is the highly- anticipated drama television series, Spilled Paint! For this project, Brandon starred in, directed, and wrote the series. Spilled Paint, which is inspired by true events, follows Brandon's character Ramirez Ponce is an underground art dealer who forces artists to paint fake paintings so he sell them to earn a major profit before murdering them. His plan goes awry when an artist suspected to have been dead surprisingly returns. The series was produced by Beth Wheatley and also stars Justine Renee, Bronsonn Taylor, and Stephanie De Lander. Previous ATFT guests, Graham Zielinski and Taylor Donaldson, also worked on this show! Spilled Paint is expected to release this Winter on Tubi! This is Brandon's first appearance on ATFT! We met on the set of his upcoming series Spilled Paint last year! As I mentioned, he wore many hats on the production while I was a production assistant. Brandon was so kind and despite how busy a set can be, he took the time to get to know me and my friend Taylor Donaldson, fellow PA and past ATFT guest. This was my first job on a set and I was stunned by how he made challenging roles on a set seem so effortless. To this day, Brandon remains the best director I've had the pleasure to work with and I hope we will work together again in the future! I was so grateful for his along with the rest of the crew's kindness. When I asked him if he'd come on the show, he was immediately in. Spilled Paint's release has shifted throughout the year so we recorded this episode towards the beginning of the year, March 8, 2024 to be exact! This was my third interview and I was very nervous. It had been several months since my last interview and I just didn't ask as many good questions as I should have. Hopefully there will be a part two in the future! Television fans will be pleased because we probably talk about as many television shows as we do films in this interview! In this episode, Brandon shares stories throughout his career from being an established stand up comedian as a teenager to his soon- to- be- released television series Spilled Paint. This episode has more star- studded stories than any previous ATFT episode yet as Brandon talks about fulfilling his life- long dream of working with Robin Williams, Ethan Coen watching his audition tape for Hail, Caesar! (2016) , and playing a competitive game of Boggle with Brie Larson. Brandon also talks about how his analysis of teleplays helped learn the craft of certain forms of comedy, his admiration of the Coen brothers, and his SNL audition. Happy Noirvember! On the thirty- first episode of ATFT, movie critic Matthieu Côté joins me in analyzing Jean- Pierre Melville's 1967 neo- noir classic, Le Samouraï! This episode is spoiler- filled. Le Samouraï is regarded as one of the most influential films of all time, inspiring a plethora of films including Taxi Driver (1976), Drive (2011), and The Killer (2023). The film follows highly- skilled hit- man Jef Costello, played by Alain Delon, as he simultaneously carries out a job and his alibi but his careful plans soon go awry. The audience then watches Jef as he maneuvers his way around the police and the criminals who hired him. Le Samouraï, like Easy Rider, is a show- don't- tell film, meaning the more you watch it, the more you gain. We watch the characters and story unfold without there being too much dialogue. Films like these are the most rewarding to analyze and, when done right, become lauded as masterpieces. Le Samouraï cemented Alain Delon as massive star in cinema and many regard this film as his best. Matthieu is a Canadian movie critic who writes for Horror Quebéc. He has interviewed several prominent directors with the most prominent thus- far being Ari Aster. Most recently, he interviewed director Timo Tjahjanto ahead of his new film The Shadow Strays. Watch his interview here!: https://youtu.be/-qDsUozgrFg?si=ITMrxcNEhYfTzGH5. Matthieu also has his own YouTube channel where he analyzes and reviews both films and television shows old and new. His analyses are truly excellent, I highly recommend subscribing to his channel… here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272/videos. This is Matthieu's first appearance on ATFT! Funny enough, we got connected through the comments of his YouTube video, “The Eyes Of Past Lives” about a year ago! His video greatly helped me prepare for last year's episode on the film Past Lives so I left a comment telling him how brilliant his analysis was and that I gave him and his video a shout out in that episode. He responded very graciously and said he would love to come on the show sometime. I always kept this in mind so, when I switched the film being discussed for Noirvember this year, I thought I'd ask Matthieu if he was interested and within 24 hours, we scheduled a time to record this episode! This episode was recorded on October 17, 2024. In this episode, Matthieu and I analyze Le Samouraï while also pay tribute to one of cinema's greats, Alain Delon, who passed away this past August. Matthieu talks about his long- time appreciation for this film, even considering it among his very favorite films of all time. We discuss various aspects of the film including how Le Samouraï compares to American noir films of the 1940s as well as recent films that were inspired by this film, the power and emotion only Alain Delon can give through his eyes alone, and Jef's accomplice: his pet bird. On the thirtieth episode of ATFT, I talk with former broadcaster/ executive producer/ writer/ actress/ proud cat mom, Vesta Millard! Vesta Millard has had an incredibly vast and impressive career in show business, so much so that those titles don't cover every job she's had! She was a radio DJ for thirty years in some of the biggest markets, including New York and New Jersey. Vesta ranks among the top ten percent of voice actors worldwide and has lent her voice to a range of projects including, but not limited to, documentaries, animated television shows, and video games. Some of her most prominent clients have been Coca Cola, the A&E Network, and Sirius XM. Vesta has appeared in commercials as well as short films "Covington", "Fruit Cake", and most recently "Life is Torture" in which she won two awards at OIF last month. Off camera, Vesta led the charge behind creating an anti- stalking law that remains in effect today and has significantly helped many people. In recent years, aside from voice acting, Vesta has created her own independent fantasy short films. Vesta's latest short film, "Time Will Tell", is the fourth installment of “The Witches Diaries” following Vesta's character, heroine witch Tara Ward. In this thirty- minute short, Tara travels back to the time of the Salem Witch Trials in order to save her bloodline. She is aided by fellow witches and pirates as Tara becomes a part of history. "Time Will Tell" be soon be submitted to film festivals but the film will have a premiere at Epic Theaters in St. Augustine, Florida on November 10 at 2 pm. Vesta's third installment, "On Blood Moon", will also be shown at the premiere. Tickets are $10 and there are raffle prizes will all proceeds going to Ayla's Acres, a nonprofit no- kill animal rescue. Also be sure to check out Vesta's work through her website!: https://www.vestavox.com/ This is Vesta's first appearance on ATFT! Thanks to the incredible Danielle Bowman for recruiting me to join the crew as a production assistant/ craft services/ film extra, I was able to meet Vesta on the set of her fourth and latest short film, "Time Will Tell", almost a year ago. The whole experience was such a joy, in large part due to the joyous and hard working environment set and led by Vesta. Since being on set is very much a work environment, there's not often much time to get to know each other. I was lucky enough to sit and have a quick chat with Vesta not long after filming wrapped, which is when I asked if she would be a guest on ATFT sometime. In that conversation, I was stunned by Vesta's stories from her career… some we didn't even get to mention in this interview! In preparing for this interview, I learned those stories were just the tip of the iceberg. I was very nervous for this interview. I had so many questions that, even though this episode was originally around 140 minutes, many questions were never posed. Hopefully there will be a part two in the future! This episode was recorded on October 2, 2024. In this episode, Vesta shares stories through the years from growing up in a show business to making independent fantasy short films today. Vesta also talks about the terrifying situation that drove her to create an important anti- stalking law. We also discuss the importance in portraying women over 40 in cinema, the making and reflection of her short films, and her appreciation for Martin Scorsese. On the twenty- ninth episode of ATFT, one of my good friends, lover of movies Taylor Donaldson joins me in discussing 1999 in film! This episode is explicit and contains spoilers for a few 1999 films. 1999 is often regarded as one of the greatest years in cinema. There's even a book written by Brian Raftery titled: Best. Movie. Year. Ever: How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen. NPR's Scott Detrow describes 1999 to Raftery in a short conversation, as a year in which "old masters like Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick were still putting out provocative work, while new masters like David Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson were pushing the boundaries of narrative and cinematic form." As Taylor describes in the beginning of the episode, it was a very "eclectic" year for cinema. Keanu Reeves took the red pill and learned "there is no spoon", John Cusack along with several others entered the mind of John Malkovich, Angelina Jolie screamed "Where's Jamie?", Brad Pitt and Edward Norton welcomed us to their fight club and Heath Ledger stole all of our hearts. 1999 was certainly an innovative, stand- alone, eclectic year in cinema. This is Taylor's fourth time on ATFT but first appearance on the wide release! Taylor has been one of my closest friends for four years now and quickly became my favorite person to talk film with. Since this is a special episode, I knew I had to bring on a very special guest and Taylor instantly came to mind. This episode was recorded on September 5, 2024. In this episode, Taylor and I discuss the films of 1999 with a little help from each and every past wide release guest on ATFT. Since this was, again, a special episode, I wanted to include all the past guests so I asked each of them their favorite film from 1999. After Taylor share our top five favorite films of the year, we go through the list of films chosen by the ATFT guest community. Taylor also shares some hot takes, the most significant probably being The Virgin Suicides is the best film by a Coppola, why she is rooting for Matt Damon's Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and the hits and many misses of the 2000 Academy Awards. On the twenty- eighth episode of ATFT, cinematographer Josie Cruz joins me in analyzing (and solving) Jaco Van Dormael's 2009 film Mr. Nobody as it celebrates its 15th anniversary! This episode is spoiler filled. Mr. Nobody is a sci- fi fantasy film that explores the butterfly effect by portraying the story in a non- linear structure. The film follows Nemo Nobody (at various points in his life from pre- birth to 118 years old) who, at nine years- old, is faced with an impossible decision when his parents divorce: should he live with his mother or his father? Through his contemplation, we see the many different life paths he would have through either decision… adding up to about twelve different lives. It is a beautiful film viewed through a child's eyes about indecision and committing to decisions while also exploring scientific concepts like the Big Crunch theory. The film stars Jared Leto, Diane Kruger, Sarah Polley, Juno Temple, and Rhys Ifans. Mr. Nobody has become a hidden gem, possibly because it was not released in the US. Mr. Nobody is a very confusing film. It is challenging to follow and possibly even harder to articulate in discussion. At times I felt as though I failed at explaining and hypothesizing this film since I wasn't sure I was making sense. I hope those who have seen Mr. Nobody are empathetic towards this and, as Josie suggests, maybe us trying to talk about this film makes the episode even more enjoyable. This is Josie's second appearance on ATFT! Josie was a guest on the Past Lives episode released last December. Not only do I regard that episode as one of the best ATFT episodes released thus far, I was stunned by Josie's analytical takes when dissecting the film. She has become one of my favorite people to analyze films with. As we discuss in the beginning of this episode, there are some similarities to Past Lives and Mr. Nobody, which is exactly why I wanted her to join me in discussing this beautiful, complex hidden gem. This episode was recorded on August 22, 2024. Josie is a Jacksonville- based cinematographer who has been streaming live, under the username jojigami, on Twitch for four years now! She streams fun video games such as Until Then with realistic interactive characters in a truly extraordinarily designed visuals and music. As someone who has joined her for two streams, it is really fun to watch Josie play these games while interacting in the chat. Click this link, https://www.twitch.tv/jojigami, to follow Josie on Twitch, watch her past streams, and leave a donation on her “About” page! Keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about Josie's Twitch streams and when you can join her livestreams! In this episode, Josie and I attempt to understand Mr. Nobody while also analyze the deeper meanings underlying the film. We also make comparisons to other films. While Josie compared Mr. Nobody to Everything Everywhere All at Once, I compared the film to Tenet. Josie also talks about her personal resonance to the film, why she liked probably- unlikable character Elise, and her favorite of Nemo's many possible life paths. On the twenty- seventh episode of ATFT, director/ 1st AC Manny Plaza- Fernandez joins me in discussing the collaborations between Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal… more specifically, the films Enemy (2013) and Prisoners (2013). This episode is spoiler filled with a few expletives. The two collaborations between director Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhaal were released in 2013. Enemy may have been made first but Prisoners was released first. Villeneuve regarded Enemy as his “practice film” as it was his first English- language film. Even though both Prisoners and Enemy are collaborations between Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal, they are very different films. Enemy is more of an art film that sparks seemingly infinite interpretations. Gyllenhaal carries that film as he plays two characters and besides him, there are very few other characters in the film. Prisoners, on the other hand, is a crime thriller with an ensemble cast that includes, aside from Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, and Melissa Leo. While Prisoners is a film that also requires analysis, it is more straight- forward than Enemy. Both films are brilliant and do share similarities in from technical aspects. These two films prove that Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal are excellent, underrated collaborators who will hopefully continue to work together in the future. This is Manny's first appearance on ATFT! Manny and I met on the set of the upcoming short film, Time Will Tell, last November. There was only one production day in November before resuming in February but after striking up a conversation on that one day in November, it was clear Manny was incredibly knowledgeable about film. He was one of the first people on the crew I befriended and, after telling him a little bit about my podcast, he definitely wanted to make a guest appearance. Ever since, we talked about a few potential topic ideas and this topic proved to be a great first episode. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2024. Manny is an Orlando- based 1st AC who has been working in the film industry for three years. He has just recently added the “director” title to his name! Manny's directorial debut, the horror short film titled The Autopsy, is expected to premiere this September at OIF! Be sure you keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about The Autopsy, his first experience in the director's chair, and when you can expect to watch this film! In this episode, Manny and I analyze both Enemy and Prisoners while (mostly) focusing on the direction of Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal's brilliant and sometimes incredibly subtle acting choices. Manny also shares how he became a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, his interpretation of Enemy (including the symbolism behind the spiders), and why he says Prisoners captures and evokes every emotion. On the twenty- sixth episode of ATFT, my good friend, law student Katherine Jakeway, joins me in comparing and contrasting the 2001 film Legally Blonde with the reality of being a law student! Legally Blonde, directed by Robert Luketic, follows Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) as she is first getting ready to go on a big date with her boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis), convinced he will propose to her but, the date takes a surprising turn when he tells her he wants to break up in anticipation of him going to Harvard Law. A devastated Elle soon has an epiphany: she will follow him to law school and get him back. Elle too gets accepted into Harvard Law, much to the surprise of her fellow law students and professors. She is belittled and underestimated by most at Harvard Law but slowly but surely earns their respect. What started as a plan to get her boyfriend back, turns into a self- journey of realization as she sees that she has more to offer the world than just her looks. The film also stars Selma Blair, Luke Wilson, and Jennifer Coolidge. Since the film's release over twenty years ago, Legally Blonde has been inspiration to many, specifically women and, even more specifically, law students. Reese Witherspoon has said many people have told her that Elle was their inspiration to attend law school. Katherine watched Legally Blonde at a young age and while she wouldn't say this film is the specific reason behind her venture into law school, it was certainly a formative film in her life. This is Katherine's second appearance on ATFT but her first appearance on the wide release of this show! She previously joined me for an episode on Christopher Nolan's Interstellar last year! Katherine and I have been friends for approaching eight years now! We met in our TV production class in our junior year of high school and have remained friends ever since! I am truly grateful that I can consider her one of my closest friends. She has always challenged me to think outside the box and continues to inspire me through her hard work and strength. Katherine came up with this topic idea maybe about two years ago now and, for a while, I couldn't figure out how to go about it. I had kept the topic in mind and eventually came up with the structure and what kinds of questions I could ask her. It's a little strange to interview a friend of eight years so between that and me being in unfamiliar waters with the legal jargon, I was quieter than usual. Although I do cringe at my poor banter in this episode, I am thrilled with the results and I think you all will be too. Katherine has been an inspiration to me and all those who know her… it is nice to know that a wider audience will likely become inspired by her as well. This episode was recorded on July 27, 2024. This month marks the beginning of Katherine's third year at SMU Law in Dallas. She is currently on the Executive Board for the International Law Review Association. This past summer, she had an internship with Zelle, LLP. As an undergraduate at SMU, Katherine was apart of the tennis team. All of this is just some of her accomplishments and it is guaranteed there will be more to come for Katherine in the future. In this episode, Katherine debunks law school stereotypes portrayed in Legally Blonde while also discussing points in the film. Katherine and I also talk about having interest in pursuing a career in law at an early age, the nature of cold- calling in class, and the importance in believing in yourself while Katherine shares her advice for those contemplating attending law school. Are you watching closely? On the twenty- fifth episode of ATFT, my friend and writer/ director Samy El- Kamel returns to begin a new segment- episode, Nolanception, where we discuss and analyze specific and niche topics within the work of Christopher Nolan! The focus of this first edition of Nolanception is on non- linearity, specifically the non- linear structures of Nolan's films. This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Nolanception is the third segment introduced on ATFT! Christopher Nolan is both mine and Samy's favorite director and we both love film analysis so we often have analytical conversations surrounding Nolan's work. Our episodes tend to be longer because of that! Since we love talking about all things Nolan, we wanted to use ATFT to allow us to analyze deeper topics within Nolan's complex films. As we throw out in this episode, we have several niche topics in the works after this! We have been really looking forward to starting this segment and we are excited to continue creating episodes under this segment! This is Samy's eighth appearance on ATFT! He is now, after my friend and photojournalist Cole Echevarria, the second most frequent guest on this show! I am always grateful when he comes on the show and then later helps spread the word about our episodes and this podcast in general. He is one of my favorite guests and one of my favorite people to discuss film with, especially since he is a fellow massive Nolan fan. Samy and I first became friends, approaching three years ago, by talking about Nolan! As always, Samy's analyses and contribution to this episode is brilliant. This episode was recorded on July 9, 2024. Samy has a production company, Barefoot Python Media, and will be releasing his next short film, Waveform, this Winter! See the teaser trailer for the short as well as a variety of his other videos, such as “The Fate of Physical Media in 2024”, “All 12 Christopher Nolan Movies, Ranked | Including Oppenheimer (2023)”, and, his last short, Speak of the Devil. If you are a Better Call Saul fan, you will probably enjoy going through his Youtube channel, @BarefootPythonMedia, on YouTube. Samy also is an excellent photographer and is selling his prints on Darkroom. Support art by purchasing his prints here!: https://samyelkamel.darkroom.com If you love Christopher Nolan's work and Nolan- related humor, this episode is for you. In this episode, Samy and I go through all of Nolan's films, from Following to Oppenheimer, and discuss the non- linear structures. Naturally, we do stray from the main focus of the episode a few times, but it's always related to Nolan's films. One instance is when we laugh, and applaud, the one poorly written line in a Nolan film. Samy and I also talk about the ways Nolan continues to make the impossible possible, bizarre Dunkirk criticism, and the serious dilemma Samy faces every morning. On the twenty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with artist Bernardo Goya! Bernardo is a Jacksonville- based artist and filmmaker with an experimental style. He has directed several films, many of them shorts, including Goodbye Channel 99, Sweet Temptation, and, his latest short being, In Eros We Trust. Bernardo's films have been featured at several film festivals including Sleeping Giant and Creative Veins. Goodbye Channel 99 actually earned the award for “Best Use of Music” Award at the Hysteria Film Festival in St. Louis the day we recorded this episode! Bernardo is keeping his next project under wraps but if it is anything like his previous films, it is sure to be creative, artistic, and something you've never seen before. I first met Bernardo on the set of our mutual friend, Craig “ienne!” Pedroza's, new short film We Dream of Eden! Several months later, Bernardo reached out to ask me if I'd record a voice narration for his short, In Eros We Trust (so if you listen closely you may hear a familiar voice!), which then led me to ask him if he and his brother Freddy would like to be guests on the Killers of the Flower Moon episode (Episode 13), an episode which nearly didn't happen without their help! This time around, Bernardo is back six months later for an interview after my original plans for Episode 24 fell through… it was a good one and will be rescheduled! This episode was recorded on June 29, 2024. To watch Bernardo's films, subscribe to his Gumroad account under the username IvoryTower333. Here is the link to his Gumroad channel!: https://ivorytower333.gumroad.com/l/phrtj?_gl=1*qncfq1*_ga*MTY0MTg4MDg2MC4xNzA0MzQwMjk5*_ga_6LJN6D94N6*MTcxOTU0MDMzMi42NC4xLjE3MTk1NDAzMzguMC4wLjA. Bernardo is planning to release a Blu- Ray DVD of his shorts towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year. He will be selling this DVD around Jacksonville and on his website, https://theboysfrombohemiangrove.godaddysites.com/, so stay tuned for that forthcoming announcement! In this episode, Bernardo's passion and knowledge for film is on full display as he discusses his appreciation for certain prominent figures like Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, his DVD collection, and love for the beloved Jacksonville theater, SunRay Cinema, which unfortunately just recently closed down. Bernardo also talks about his encounter with John Waters, how he crafts his films both in production and in post- production, and the different eras he has laid out for his work in film, which tends to come with a name change! On the twenty- third episode of ATFT, my friend and photojournalist Cole Echevarria returns for the second “wide- released” edition of our segment, Film Finds! This episode spoils two 2024 films: Monkey Man and The Fall Guy. The “Film Finds” segment is ATFT in its most casual, spontaneous form as we talk about recent films we've watched with nearly nothing prepared. The last time we did a “Film Finds” episode was back in August of last year. Listen to that episode titled “Episode 3: Film Finds- August 2023 with Cole Echevarria”! This time around, I discuss a few old films I have seen since our last Film Finds episode while Cole focuses on 2024 films. This is Cole's, record- breaking, sixteenth appearance on ATFT! On this “wide release” of the show, this is Cole's sixth appearance! Check out Cole's previously “wide- released” episodes 2, 3, 10, 13, and 15! Before recording this episode, I gave Cole his long- awaited birthday present: the very first ATFT shirt! Not only is he the most frequent guest and “unofficial co- host” of the show, Cole is one of the biggest champions of this podcast. He surely makes each episode fun and brings out a less- serious version of myself. Cole has been asking for merch for a while now and, since he is both a great friend and aforementioned champion of ATFT, I wanted to make him the very first ATFT shirt individualized just for him! Check out @all.the.film.things on Instagram to see the shirt! This episode was recorded on June 10, 2024. Cole is a photojournalist based in Jacksonville, Florida. He works behind the scenes for First Coast News! While this segment is meant to be sharing the films we have recently watched, this episode went slightly awry. This episode is filled with debates, especially in the first twenty minutes or so. Those twenty or so minutes are some of the most comical ATFT has seen thus far since our banter just gets better and better. Debate topics include Cole's bold statement, “If 12 Angry Men was made today, it would be far better than the original 1957 film”, and if coloring in film is better now than back in the day when Technicolor was used. Weigh in on the debates by answering the question that appears after listening to this episode or by going to or tagging the All the Film Things Instagram! Cole also shares his top five 2024 films so far while also discussing the new films he has recently seen in theaters. Towards the end of this episode, I talk about a few of the films I have seen lately, including The Virgin Spring, Le Samouraï, and The Children's Hour. Cole and I also share some hot takes surrounding Sydney Sweeney and The Bikeriders, respectively. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! On the twenty- second episode of ATFT, film historian/ author/ lecturer Max Alvarez joins me in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Chinatown! This episode is spoiler- filled. Chinatown, a neo- noir thriller directed by Roman Polanski, is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time. The film is set in 1937 Los Angeles and follows J.J. “Jake” Gittes, a private investigator played brilliantly by Jack Nicholson, as he is, initially, hired by a woman to uncover the details of her husband's, Hollis Mulwray, affair, a man who is the head of the water department. From there, the story unfolds in unanticipated ways. What started as an investigation into an affair leads to the uncovering of a deceitful plot involving Mulwray's former partner as co- head of the water department, Noah Cross (John Huston). Chinatown deals with corruption, greed, and the advantages of having money, which by extension, comes with power. The film also stars Faye Dunaway who plays Evelyn Mulwray, Hollis Mulwray's wife and Jake's “partner- in crime” in solving this expansive and disturbing case. Chinatown won one Oscar, for Robert Towne's famously masterful screenplay, and earned ten nominations. This is Max's second guest appearance on ATFT! He was the guest on the very first episode of the “wide- release” of ATFT. I was so honored that Max agreed to be my first interview and I am just as honored that he agreed to return to discuss this excellent film! Since our interview, we have maintained a consistent correspondence via e-mail where we keep each other updated on our projects as well as discuss certain films. This episode was recorded on June 6, 2024. Max Alvarez is a guest lecturer at both New Plaza Cinema in NYC and the Smithsonian Institute. On the day this episode releases, Max will be giving a Zoom lecture on “The Cinema of Billy Wilder” and the next day, he will be giving another Zoom lecture on Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard. Stay updated on Max's upcoming lectures for New Plaza Cinema by going to the “Lectures” tab on newplazacinema.org. Max has also written three books, two of which, The Crime Films of Anthony Mann and The Cinephile's Guide to the Great Age of Cinema, are available for purchase on Barnes and Noble's website. In this episode, Max shares some history about the making of Chinatown from Robert Towne's screenplay, which is often regarded as “the greatest screenplay of all time” to Jerry Goldsmith's score. I compared Chinatown to two films: one that was recently Oscar- nominated and the other being an Italian film from the 60s. Max and I also analyze the film's mysteries as well as characters Jake Gittes and Noah Cross and discuss the famous ending of the film, including the drastic last minute changes made to Chinatown's original ending. On the twenty- first episode of ATFT, I am joined by the host of the Red Room Radio podcast, Cristina Santiago, to talk about Old Hollywood Fashion in Film Moments. More specifically, fashion moments in color films from the 50s and 60s. Old Hollywood has had a lasting impact on cinema, pop culture, and the world to this day in many ways… with one of them being fashion. In an article titled "Old Hollywood's Impact on the Fashion World" on UrbanityChic.com, the trends featured in Old Hollywood films “…have transcended the passing of time, thanks to their universal appeal and sophisticated versatility. Year after year, flapper or retro- inspired trends appear on the runways, and designers create lines to emulate the fashion icons of this famous era.” With the range of Old Hollywood lasting from the 1920s- 1967, it's incredible to see the lasting impact and appreciation of classic Old Hollywood fashion decades later. The actresses of this time have transcended to the stratosphere of “icon status”- especially Marilyn Monroe. It's likely no surprise to many that Audrey Hepburn popularized the classic little black dress but who would've thought Marilyn Monroe is responsible for the rise in popularity of polka dots? Old Hollywood stars like Marilyn and Audrey have been immortalized on screen and their dazzling impact along with many others have lasted to today. This is Cristina's second guest appearance on the wide release of ATFT! She was previously a guest on the Elevator to the Gallows episode this past November, which is still the most listened ATFT episode! Overall, this is her fourth guest appearance on the show. Cristina and I share a love of Old Hollywood films… and fashion. We have been talking about and preparing this episode for several months but the format was the biggest challenge. After being stumped for a while, Cristina came up with this fashion show format which has never been done before on ATFT! This episode was recorded on May 24, 2024. Cristina is the host of Red Room Radio, a pop culture podcast with a variety of topics and established guests. Her episodes range from rap album reviews to interviews to spotlights on prominent celebrities. I have been lucky enough to be a guest on the “Jayne Mansfield ‘Barbie World'” and “Celebrity Spotlight | Britney Spears” episodes! Cristina's most recent episode was on Beyoncé's latest album, Cowboy Carter, with her guest being Jet Phynx, the CEO of Jet Phynx Films. Red Room Radio episodes range from seven minutes to an hour long. No matter the length, each episode is consistently excellent with brilliant questions, great guests, and well- crafted editing. You can listen to Red Room Radio on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, and more! Be sure to follow Red Room Radio on those platforms as well as Cristina on Instagram @xoredroomradio ! This episode starts off with Cristina and I naming our top five Old Hollywood icons. Cristina takes it up a notch by naming her top 10 Old Hollywood icons with specific films… she throws in a New Hollywood film and TV show in as well! We next go through iconic fashion moments in Old Hollywood films including Grace Kelly in Rear Window and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. On the twentieth episode of ATFT, I talk with director Craig Ienne Pedroza! Craig is a Jacksonville filmmaker who fell in love with cinema at a young age and his passion for film has only grown through the years. Musicals like The Court Jester, Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music were some of the first musicals that have impacted him to this day. His favorite film is Damian Chazelle's La La Land. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Film & Production last year and has won both the Best Micro Short at Infinity Fest and Best Jax 180 at the Apologia Film Festival for his short film "The Candles are Wilting", which you can watch on YouTube by clicking here!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXecwF6x0xU. This is Craig's third guest appearance on the wide release of ATFT! He was previously a guest on the episodes #FilmTwitter Trends: Directors edition and the 2024 Oscars Special. Overall, this is his fifth guest appearance on the show. This episode marks the first time I have interviewed a friend on ATFT! Craig and I became friends through our mutual friend, Taylor, who helped recruit him to join our team of making a short film. Craig was incredibly helpful and gave me advice I really needed at the time amidst the stressful environment. We share similar interests in film, especially in regards to Wong Kar- Wai. Two years later, we often talk or text about film and I love learning of his often fascinating, unique takes. When I started this podcast two years ago, it was always my intention to interview my friends but I grew somewhat hesitant since I expected I would know many of the answers to the questions asked. I ended up learning so much about Craig and I couldn't be happier with what became of this episode. This episode was recorded on May 10, 2024. Craig's musical drama short, "We Dream of Eden", has been long anticipated. The film is about dreams and how a stranger can have a strong impact on another. The story is told through a young boy, Noah's (Aisha Christopher Williams jr), eyes and his fractured memories of the turbulent relationship between up- and- coming star July (Lina Smith) and her boyfriend Rowan (Jadon Le). Lina Smith has been a guest on two previously released episodes: Horror films and the 2024 Oscars Special! I was very fortunate to work on this film as a script supervisor but more so capturing behind the scenes footage. Craig's goal for the film is for the audience to leave the theater with a certain, individualized and impactful feeling. Craig led a positive and collaborative set filled with people who share a deep passion for film. "We Dream of Eden" will be submitted to a few film festivals so stay updated on when and where you can watch the short film by following @iennefilm on both Instagram and YouTube as well as his production company KAIBIGANfilm on Instagram. Craig gives a very real, honest interview that spans from his early interest in film thanks to his grandparents and mother to reflecting on his previous work to his boldest project yet, "We Dream of Eden". His story and work ethic is sure to inspire aspiring filmmakers. In this episode, Craig and I also talk about the brilliance of 12 Angry Men, the challenges of filmmaking, and how he opened up and became more social thanks to three factors including film and his girlfriend Lina. On the nineteenth episode of ATFT, I talked with director/ writer/ producer and Wagyu Films co- founder David A. Roberts! David has been working in production for over twenty years, a long period of time only exceeded by his passion for film. Thanks to his father, David developed an appreciation for horror films at an early age which led him to his work today. Before shifting into feature films more recently, he directed commercials, music videos, and shorts for over fifteen years. He co- founded the production company Wagyu films alongside longtime friends and collaborators. Under Wagyu films, David and company made shorts Weight, Embers, and Afterlyfe- all of which can be viewed on their Youtube channel @WagyuFilms. David's directorial feature debut, Older Gods, is a Lovecraftian, cosmic horror film following Chris (Rory Wilson) whose friend's disappearance propels him on dark investigation, leading him to the horrifying apocalyptic cult that could have been the reason for his friend's demise. Older Gods earned the “Best British Film” award at the Breaking TV Film Festival in London and the “Best Horror Film” award at the Los Angeles Film Awards last year. Older Gods is now available for rent on Amazon Prime and is streaming free with ads on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu). In this episode, David and I talk about horror films such as Aliens and The Shining and the impact of sound in the horror genre, why he loves being a director and working in production, and his debut feature film, Older Gods! On the eighteenth episode of ATFT, I am joined by filmmaker/ podcaster/ documentarian/ “all around badd-ass” Shane Kidd- Walker to talk about the incredible Creed franchise starring Michael B Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson! This episode is explicit with spoilers. The Creed franchise is a continuation of the decades- spanning beloved Rocky franchise. Adonis Johnson (Jordan) is the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), the antagonist and later friend of Rocky in the Rocky franchise, but he never met his father. Like his late father he is a fighter who moves from LA to Philadelphia to fight full time and get help training from Rocky. From there he creates a strong bond with his “unc” Rocky and develops a relationship with Bianca (Thompson), a popular singer in Philly. So far, there are three Creed films with the first being released in 2015, the second in 2018, and the third in 2023. Each of the Creed films have parallels to the coinciding Rocky films. While the franchise is incredibly popular and beloved among long time fans, each of the films have received critical acclaim. The audio quality gets much better after the first fifteen minutes. I'm happy to say this is one of the best quality- sounding episodes so far! This is Shane's first guest appearance on ATFT! He has been one of the biggest champions of this podcast for which I am incredibly grateful. Shane is one of the hosts of Industry Shakedown, a pop culture podcast covering niche, interesting topics that always provoke great conversations amongst the hosts. Industry Shakedown is currently available to listen on the Pro Sports Fanatics (formerly Relevnt) app but will soon be available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more platforms later this year. Stay updated by following both @industryshakedowninc and @iamskw on Instagram! Also, check out the Industry Shakedown magazine here: https://issuu.com/phantast1cproductionzp1p. This episode was recorded on April 13, 2024. In this analytical episode, Shane and I talk about the evolution of both Adonis and Bianca, if Creed should have taken the fight with Viktor Drago, and a potential Creed IV. Shane also shares his ranking of the current trilogy and how being a due hard Rocky fan initially made him hesitant to watch the first Creed film back in 2015. We also answer the big question: Should Sylvester Stallone have been in Creed III? All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! On the seventeenth episode of ATFT, my friends philosopher pirate Daniel Carbonell- Sifontes and filmmaker/ video editor Max McBride join me on the second edition of the “fan- favorite” ATFT segment, #FilmTwitter Trends! This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers. Towards the end of last year, there was this trend going around #FilmTwitter (with the platform now called X) where someone would post a decade and list their favorite film each year of that decade. Nearly every decade became a trend at the time and it became a fun thing to think about and then answer. This episode does have some audio issues but the quality of the audio gets better later in the episode. I believe this episode is not only one of the best casual- format episodes of ATFT but one of the best episodes of this “wide release” so far so I hope despite the poor quality at times, you will all enjoy it! Both Daniel and Max have been guests on ATFT before but this is their debut on this "wide release" of the podcast! I told Daniel about this Twitter trend and asked which decades he'd be interested in doing an episode around and he said either the 70s or 90s (just as I had hoped!). The 90s was a great decade for cinema with some of the most original films since the 70s. Between the three of us, we have a very different interests in film which made for a wide range of films discussed from Reservoir Dogs to Fallen Angels to Romeo and Juliet. Daniel is an incredible photographer and has recently directed a few music videos for the band Velvet Meadow. Follow his photography Instagram account @allmynegativesarehere and subscribe to Max's YouTube channel by clicking here! Max recently posted a documentary short as well as an action- packed short film Pools. This episode was recorded on March 15, 2024. In this episode, Daniel, Max, and I go through our list of 90s film favorites and discuss them briefly as well as talking about other 90s films. Daniel's first pick, his favorite film of 1990, caught Max and I by surprise. Max, an anime fan, was very excited to share his 1997 pick. Two of my 90s favorites got an eye roll from Daniel but I stand by my choices! Some tangents include Pokémon video games, one- take films like 1917 and Birdman, and arguing over the quality of 1980s cinema. Later in the episode we have a quick debate over which Keanu Reeves franchise is better: The Matrix or John Wick. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! On the sixteenth episode of ATFT, I am joined by one of my good friends, musician Helena Amador to talk about iconic music moments in film! In other words, moments in film where found music is featured or used to elevate a scene. This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers. Helena is to music what I am to film. We are coming up on ten years of friendship and, for as long as I've known her, she has always loved music and listens to a wide variety of music. It has been very cool to combine our passions for this episode and we made sure to go in "professional mode" for our talk. Even though this is Helena's first appearance on this wide release, she is actually now tied as the second most frequent guest on ATFT! This episode marks her seventh guest appearance on the show and I have been excited to bring one of our episodes to this wide release! As previously stated, Helena is a musician and DJ- you can occasionally find her doing a live set on Twitch where the comment section is always active. Helena plans on releasing her own music hopefully later this year and continues to be booked for DJ gigs. Follow Helena and check out her mixes on SoundCloud and by clicking here: https://on.soundcloud.com/sokHybkUtMNh7Fwc7. This episode was recorded on March 14, 2024. In this episode, Helena and I share our picks for our favorite music moments in film while also focusing on specific directors like Quentin Tarantino who famously use found music in their films to elevate a scene. We both share some hot takes where I talk about how found music is usually better used in 70s films rather than in 80s films and Helena's pet peeve of Baz Luhrmann's use of popular music. The Oscars countdown has come to a close on All the Film Things! On the fifteenth episode of ATFT, my friends photojournalist/ unofficial ATFT co- host Cole Echevarria, director Craig Pedroza, and actress Lina Smith join this year's panel to discuss the Oscar nominated films and share our predicted winners! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. 2023 was a great year for film… making this year's Oscars very exciting! This year's awards season has become the most competitive since the 2020 awards season, with competing films that included Parasite, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and Joker. For the 2024 Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer earned the most nominations (13) this year while Poor Things came in second, earning 11 nominations. Other films that received many nominations are Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, Maestro, and American Fiction. Even though Oppenheimer is predicted to sweep this year, many categories are have become incredibly competitive, leaving audiences torn on who will win. Will it be Cillian Murphy or Paul Giamatti who will take home the Best Actor Oscar (a strong debate between Cole and I)? How about who will win Best Actress: Lily Gladstone or Emma Stone? These are just two of the widely debated categories. We will soon learn the answer on Sunday, March 10! Every one of this year's Oscar panelists are returning guests. This is Cole's fifteenth appearance on ATFT (fifth on this wide release). This is both Craig and Lina's fourth appearance each on the show while also having one episode each released on the wide release (Episode 12 for Craig and Episode 6 for Lina). Cole and I recorded an Oscars special for the 2023 Oscars via the Relevnt app. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to make it a big yearly event for the show! Since the Oscars is the “Super Bowl for film fans”, this episode is in a more Sports Center- format. This episode was recorded exactly one month before the Oscars on February 10, 2024. In this episode, Cole, Craig, Lina, and I go through each category and discuss our predicted winners. Cole and I have very strong favorites, his being The Holdovers and mine being Oppenheimer. We agree that our banter in this episode is the best and most entertaining yet. There are few categories we unanimously agree on. Lina compares the brilliant aging hair and makeup in Oppenheimer and Maestro. Craig thinks that even though Oppenheimer is predicted to be the Best Picture winner, there could definitely be an upset. In addition to sharing our predictions, we talked about snubs and surprises, our ranging thoughts on Wes Anderson's work, films like Saltburn and May December that fizzled out from Oscar buzz over time, and more! ATFT Announcement!: Due to recent production assistant opportunities, there will be no episode on March 13. All the Film Things will be back on March 27! The Oscars countdown is coming to a close! On the fourteenth episode of All the Film Things, my friend and writer/ director Samy El- Kamel is back to discuss my favorite film of the year, the latest masterpiece by Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Oppenheimer, a film that many have considered Christopher Nolan's “magnum opus”, is an epic biographical drama film based on a true story following J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Manhattan Project, from the making of the atomic bomb to the world he created after making the atomic bomb. While the description of the film makes it seem like a straight biopic, it is very much a Nolan film. This film is based on the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. After collaborating on six films together over the past twenty years, this is the first time Nolan cast Murphy in a lead role. The film has an all- star cast, including in addition to Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Jason Clarke, and Rami Malek. Oppenheimer received the most nominations (with ten) at this year's upcoming Oscars, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning how many Oscars Oppenheimer will take home! Samy is one of my very favorite ATFT guests and this is his sixth appearance on the show. Samy and I are both massive Christopher Nolan fans… which I think the audience will very much pick up on. So much so that we both made sure to see Oppenheimer four times in theaters. There was no one else I could have recorded this episode with. Check out Samy's Youtube channel Barefoot Python Media to watch his videos including his ranking of Christopher Nolan's films, the future of physical media, and his director/ cinematographer reel. Click here to watch and subscribe to the Barefoot Python Media Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia/videos. We recorded this episode on January 21, 2024. Since I was editing the previous ATFT episode (on Killers of the Flower Moon), I couldn't analyze Oppenheimer as extensively as I had hoped and tend to do with Christopher Nolan films so I didn't talk about the film as much as I hoped but that is completely okay because the episode turned out incredible. In this episode, Samy shares additional facts behind the true story of Oppenheimer's life while also analyzing the man himself further. Since Oppenheimer is (only) three hours long, Christopher Nolan couldn't portray everything in the true story. Through Samy, I learned the subtle ways in which Christopher Nolan captures the true Oppenheimer. We also discuss the trademark Nolan qualities in Oppenheimer such as parallel editing, non- linearity, and how both of those qualities come together to play with time. While the film is mostly analytical, the last section is more of a casual conversation surrounding Nolan, recent videos Samy created for Barefoot Python Media that are available on Youtube, and a little prank Samy pulled that had me laughing so hard. The next episode will be the big Oscars special! Due to upcoming production assistant opportunities, this episode may not be released on February 28. The Oscars countdown continues! On the thirteenth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by brothers, filmmaker Freddy Burgos and artist Bernardo Goya to talk about Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime drama film based on a true story depicted in the book by David Grann, about the betrayal of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The film follows Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he returns from war to live with his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert DeNiro). Hale sets Ernest up to be a driver which leads him to meeting Molly Kyle (Lily Gladstone). Ernest and Molly fall in love but Ernest is “under Hale's spell” as they, with help from a few others, plot to kill her family in order to take their wealth. It's a heartbreaking, brutal story focused on this plot while also giving a voice to a story that has been hidden in history for decades. Killers of the Flower Moon marks the first time Scorsese directed his two muses, DeNiro and DiCaprio, in a film. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow. Just last week, Killers of the Flower Moon earned ten Oscar nominations, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning if the film will take home a few Oscars! This episode is both Freddy and Bernardo's ATFT debut! We met on the set of our friend Craig Pedroza's upcoming film We Dream of Eden in 2022. They truly saved this episode. My original guest became unavailable so I was scrambling to find a guest. I asked Bernardo if he'd be interested and he was (!!) so he brought along his brother and the three of us had a great conversation! I learned early on this was a perfect film for us to discuss since they are big Martin Scorsese fans… and it shows in the episode! They have a joint YouTube channel called Fresh Lad Collective where they post, according to their bio, "cinematic shenanigans" which includes short films, vlogs, and compilations. Check out their channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/@freshladcollective/featured In this episode, Freddy, Bernardo, and I attempt to understand the complicated grey areas of the film such as the highly debated question, “Does Ernest really love Molly?”. Bernardo gave this film high praise, regarding it as Scorsese's “magnum opus”. Since Freddy and Bernardo are big fans of Scorsese, a lot of the episode focuses on him as they compare this film to previous films in Scorsese's filmography such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Departed. I spoke about the Scorsese film from the New Hollywood era that made me gain an even stronger respect for him. We also talked about the mafia- like parallel/ similarities, the dynamic between Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro, Lily Gladstone's powerful and moving performance, and much more! On the twelfth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends photojournalist Cole Echevarria and director Craig Pedroza to talk about a #FilmTwitter trend where we each name our favorite film from a list of highly acclaimed directors. The directors listed were: Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and James Cameron. This episode contains a few spoilers. This episode is the first of a new recurring segment- type episode on ATFT called #FilmTwitter Trends. As a film aficionado, I thoroughly enjoy #FilmTwitter. I often tweet my responses to the latest brilliant trend going around. Each trend is a fun, challenging topic to answer which makes for a great discussion with fellow film aficionados. This episode was not originally on the January schedule for ATFT. Due to a last minute cancellation, I took this episode out of the vault of episodes recorded on Relevnt. This episode was recorded back in April 2022 (before Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and The Killer were released) so the audio quality is, unfortunately, not as good as previous episodes. Hopefully, listeners will enjoy the conversation and will not be bothered by the more- poor quality. As recurring listeners may know, Cole is back for his fourth appearance on the "wide release" of ATFT. Craig has appeared on three episodes of ATFT but this is his first appearance on this "wide release"! This will not be the last time listeners will hear from Craig as he is scheduled to join the upcoming Oscar predictions episode alongside Cole! In this episode, Cole, Craig, and I discuss our favorite films from each of the directors previously listed as well as a few more we added. The few tangents include Craig discussing his opinion on why more recent films are more beneficial to watch than older films and trying to solve the name of the actor who starred in both Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (apologies to Matthew Modine). Cole and Craig share funny yet fearful stories relating to Jaws while I, a horror film scaredy- cat, remember how I came to enjoy The Shining. The first episode of the new year! On the eleventh episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friend Samy- El Kamel to look back on 2023 in film! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. 2023 was a good year for film, especially when compared to recent years. Acclaimed directors such as Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and Ridley Scott released new films! It was a big year for theaters… and not just superhero movies. Barbenheimer was a massive phenomenon that started organically through social media over summer. More blockbusters included Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning, Part One and Spider- Man Across the Spiderverse. In the latter part of the year, many Oscar contenders like May December, Saltburn, and The Holdovers were released. Even though this is Samy's first appearance on the wide release of ATFT, this is his fifth guest appearance! Samy is one of my favorite people to talk film with. We became friends in a documentary production class in college after a spontaneous conversation about our mutual favorite director: Christopher Nolan. You can view Samy's work (photography, short films, documentaries, etc.) on his website: https://barefootpythonmedia.com. Make sure to watch his short film, Speak of the Devil! Samy is an absolute film aficionado. He is incredibly knowledgable about films, directors, and what is happening in the industry. He has a film- focused YouTube channel which you can check out by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZBAlRzOfdv-Gxa3fFV_TdQ. His writing abilities for both screenwriting, in which he won two awards for, and his film analyses, are consistently brilliant… which is clear just by listening to him in this episode. Samy will be back on ATFT soon since he is already scheduled to be on two upcoming episodes! In this episode, Samy and I share our top favorite films of the year. While we share a few similar favorites, Samy has several films on his list that are either more “low- key” or underrated. Samy talked about The Creator, a film he wasn't a fan of but has a strong appreciation for its existence. We later discussed movements in film that grew during 2023 including the increasing superhero fatigue, and the possible future of both movie theaters and DVDs. Towards the end of the episode, we talk about the possible ways AI could affect the film industry. On the tenth episode of All the Film Things I am joined by my good friends, Cole Echevarria and Joshua Smith, to celebrate the holiday season by talking about Frank Capra's 1946 Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life. This episode is spoiler- filled. Not only is this episode on a Christmas- focused film, this episode has a very Christmas-y feel. The holiday season is a time where friends and family come together. In enjoying each other's company, family and friends share meaningful moments, deep conversations, and maybe a dispute or two. This episode has all of that. The three of us analyze the film while discussing the deep themes... with some minor arguments throughout. It's a Wonderful Life is a fantasy, comedy film in which James Stewart plays the main character, George Bailey, a man with aspirations of seeing the world outside his hometown building skyscrapers and becoming wealthy. His big dreams are continuously put aside to allow him to help others which often, by extension, positively impacts the entire community of his hometown, Bedford Falls. His impact on so many people isn't realized until towards the end of the film, thanks to his guardian angel. It's a Wonderful Life was surprisingly not a success at the time of its release but has over time it has become regarded as one of the most widely celebrated Christmas films of all time. The film also stars Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, and Gloria Grahame. Cole is back for his third appearance on this wide release of All the Film Things, making this his 14th appearance in total. This is Joshua's fifth time on ATFT. Joshua was the one to suggest we talk about this film, since it's his favorite. I then asked Cole which he preferred of the two options (this film or Home Alone) and he agreed with Joshua. This was my first time watching It's a Wonderful Life in its entirety. Joshua has been watching this film since he was a kid while Cole had only seen it twice. They both regard It's a Wonderful Life as their favorite Christmas film. This episode was recorded on December 8, 2023. In this episode, between the banter, we go through the film beginning to end discussing the admirable qualities of George Bailey, trying to better understand certain moments, and much more! Cole shares his personal connections to the film and why the film resonates with him deeply. I made a film comparison that is teased by both Cole and Joshua throughout this episode. On the ninth episode of All the Film Things, we are continuing to focus on likely Oscar contenders! I am joined by my friend and cinematographer, Josie Cruz, to discuss and analyze Celine Song's instant classic debut feature film, Past Lives. This episode is spoiler- filled. Past Lives is a romantic drama that explores the deep connection between childhood friends, who are also each other's first loves', over the span of 24 years. The film, set mostly in NYC and Seoul, follows Nora (known as Na Young before she emigrated) and Hae Sung as they navigate their relationship from losing contact with one another to finding each other again as they go through life. When Hae Sung comes to visit a now- married Nora in NYC, they try and understand their relationship and significance to one another. Inspired by her real life experiences, the film was written and directed by Celine Song featuring excellent performances by Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro. This episode was recorded on November 26, 2023… one day before Past Lives won Best Picture at the Gotham Awards. Up until that win, fans of this film, including Josie and I, had been concerned Past Lives may not get the recognition it deserves during the upcoming awards season. Now that Past Lives earned the big award on November 27, the Past Lives fan community has hope it will receive proper recognition at the Oscars. As I mention in this episode, this is a rare, true film in present day cinema. This is Josie's ATFT debut! Josie is a cinematographer who recently graduated college. You can view her reel by clicking this link: https://jojigami.webflow.io . She has been one of the biggest supporters of this podcast and the Instagram associated with the podcast, for which I am very grateful. This episode came together fast. There were two cancellations and I was running out of time to plan what Episode 9 would be. I knew I wanted to do an episode on Past Lives and I also knew I've been wanting to have Josie on as a guest. So, I randomly asked one day if she happened to see Past Lives, thinking it was unlikely… but to my surprise, it happened to be one of her top films of the year! We soon recorded this episode and it has turned out to be one of the best episodes released so far on this wide release of ATFT. And this certainly won't be the last time you'll hear her on ATFT. In this episode, Josie and I analyze a range of moments and topics about the film. While dissecting the film, we learn that the suspense posed by the trailer of “Who will Nora choose?” isn't really what the film is about. We talked about how Nora's decision was always the same while also going deeper into the complexity of her dynamic with both Hae Sung and Arthur as well as the complexity of Past Lives as a whole. Josie talked about how meaningful this film is to her and connections she made in her own life while I talk about this film's similar, trademark qualities of New Hollywood- 70s films. We also talked about the depiction of present day technology in the film, the power of utilizing silence, and much more! On the eighth episode of All the Film Things, we are celebrating Noirvember! I am joined by my friend, and host of the podcast Red Room Radio, Cristina Santiago, to discuss Louis Malle's 1958 noir film, Elevator to the Gallows. This episode is spoiler- filled. Elevator to the Gallows is a crime thriller film set in Paris and with the events unfolding within 24 hours. The film follows two couples in paralleled storylines. One couple, is young and always together while the other pair are literally separated. Jeanne Moreau stars in the lead role of Florence, who we see in the beginning of the film, plotting with her lover Julien (Maurice Ronet) to kill her husband- his boss- in order for them to be together. After their plans go awry, a tangled web of events involving both couples is set in motion. Not only was this Louis Malle's debut directed feature film, this film also made Jeanne Moreau a star. Released two years before Jean Luc Godard's Breathless, Elevator to the Gallows is regarded as an inspiration for the French New Wave. Miles Davis's jazz score is regarded as "historic" and we quote from Richard Brody's article on the score and film for The New Yorker. I incorrectly stated the name of the author and did not realize until the release date of this episode. This is technically the second ATFT episode Cristina has appeared on. As I mention in the beginning in this episode, this was our second attempt at discussing Elevator to the Gallows. We recorded this second attempt on November 10, 2023 but there are a few excerpts from the first attempt, which was recorded on October 26, 2023. Cristina has a real appreciation for Old Hollywood films so I had recommended her this film, assuming she enjoyed foreign film as well, but I was surprised to learn Elevator to the Gallows was the first foreign film she watched! But watching the film didn't go so smoothly… Cristina and I discuss this in the beginning of the episode. Luckily, she enjoyed the film and is looking forward to watching more classic foreign films! Cristina hosts the pop culture podcast Red Room Radio. Like ATFT, Cristina has a range of topics and different formats allowing her to have a broad range of pop culture- focused episodes. She recently welcomed R. Kurt Osenlund on RRR for a pop culture chat. I was fortunate to have been a guest on RRR for part one and two of the Jayne Mansfield episodes. Be sure to follow Red Room Radio on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more so you never miss an episode! In this episode, Cristina and I talk about the famous scene of Jeanne Moreau strolling the streets of Paris at night, Miles Davis's score, imagining what Academy Awards Elevator to the Gallows should have won, the film's ending, and much more! On the seventh episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friend, Dina Vo, to discuss the film that took this summer (well... year) by storm: Greta Gerwig's Barbie. This episode is spoiler- filled. Barbie is a comedy/ fantasy film focused on the famous variety of the Barbie (and Ken) dolls. The film was written by two of the best working American filmmakers today: Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. While the film features a wide range of different Barbies, Kens, and Allan, the story revolves around stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) as she suddenly starts to change and feel an emotion other than routined happiness. The audience, along with stereotypical Ken (Ryan Gosling) join Barbie on her journey to finding who she really is. Barbie, and by extension “Barbenheimer” became a phenomenon. The cast and director went on an extensive press tour with a level of promotion that hasn't happened with a film in a long time. Greta Gerwig became the first sole female director of a film that made over $1 billion at the box office. This is her third directed feature film. The film also stars America Ferrara, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera. This is the first and only ATFT episode Dina has appeared on. We recorded this on August 15, 2023. Dina is not much of a movie- goer. It is rare for her to go to the movies or even watch movies so when she went to see Barbie, I knew we could make an episode around it… especially since I had two more friends waiting for me to see Barbie in order to do certain episodes. Dina enjoyed the film as she dressed up in pink when going to see Barbie in theaters. She even got to take a picture in the now- famous Barbie box! Since this episode was recorded while sitting in a car, the audio quality isn't as great at times. This episode was originally 90 minutes but it had to be cut down mostly due to poor audio. I was able to improve the audio but unfortunately the audio peaks at times and also becomes more muffled. Despite the poor audio quality, I wanted to post this episode because it is certain to be an Oscar contender in March. There will be a few more episodes focused on guaranteed Oscar nominated films leading up to the 2024 Academy Awards. In this episode, Dina and I cover a range of topics about the film. I had prepared notes but I was surprised to learn Dina prepared notes as well! We mostly went through her notes so this episode moves fast with frequent changing topics, Dina and I discussed the “anti- man” criticism surrounding Barbie, the two opposing viewpoints on the Barbie doll, resonant lines and moments, and all things Barbie- land! Later in the episode, Dina takes the same Buzzfeed character quiz that the Barbie cast took (which left Margot Robbie shocked)! On the sixth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friend, Lina Smith for this special Halloween episode as we talk about horror films! Whenever October comes around, many people watch their favorite horror films to be fully immersed in the Halloween season. Lina is a horror film aficionado while I am the exact opposite. Aside from a few exceptions (specifically The Shining), I can't enjoy horror films. I would much rather watch an Alfred Hitchcock film. This episode was recorded on October 11, 2023. This is the 50th episode of ATFT (but only the sixth episode of this wide release). This is the latest of three episodes Lina has been a guest on (stay tuned for our Greta Gerwig episode… it's a good one). Lina requested the topic due to her love for horror films. This episode was previously scheduled to be released on Wednesday, October 26 but unfortunately due to exporting errors, this episode is a few days late. I sincerely apologize for this delay. I take these deadlines very seriously. Something was wrong with the sequence but I was fortunately able to transfer the sequence into another project. While there are some noticeable errors and glitches in the episode, I hope it will still be enjoyable! In this episode, Lina talks about some of her favorite horror films, such as The Cabin in the Woods and Hereditary, her thoughts on horror films today, the effect horror films have had on her, and much more! Lina is particularly a fan of Ari Aster so we discussed his work and his current place in being one of the newly established directors of horror today. Towards the end of the episode, I ask Lina a sort of “rapid fire” where I name a horror film and she tells me her thoughts on it. On the fifth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by one of my close friends, Katelin Fitzpatrick, to discuss Dennis Hopper's 1969 film Easy Rider starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. This episode is spoiler- filled. Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider is a road/ drama film focused on two hippies riding motorcycles across state lines “looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere….” Although the New Hollywood movement was slowly beginning in 1967, it was Easy Rider that officially launched this short- lived yet impactful movement in American cinema. Easy Rider was enormously successful and forever changed the film industry in several ways, including the rise of independent films. This is the first of three episodes Katelin has appeared on to date. We recorded this on August 17, 2022 as a way to pay tribute to Peter Fonda who had passed away 3 years prior on August 16. I wasn't sure if Katelin would enjoy this film since it is one that divides audiences. Some consider it a masterpiece while some consider it terrible. I truly believe it is a masterpiece… you just have to watch it a few times. Luckily, Katelin enjoyed the film but there were some moments that made her angry. Since this is one of the earliest ATFT episodes, the audio quality isn't as great as previous episodes. I was able to improve the audio but unfortunately the audio dips in quality and has some occasional ambiance interference. Despite the poor audio quality, I wanted to post this episode because the quality of the conversation is worthy to be included in this “wide release” of ATFT. In this episode, Katelin and I first discuss some trivia surrounding the film such as Easy Rider being the first film to use found music, what happened to the original bikes, and how much of the film's dialogue was improvised. Later in the episode, we analyze the film- specifically the line “We blew it”, its parallels to the hippie movement, and how this film remains current in talking about freedom. On the fourth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with cinematographer and videographer Graham Zielinski. Graham's dream has been to work in film production… but for a few years, he wasn't sure if that would be his path. Graham spent two years in Los Angeles trying to make it as an actor. When he returned home to Florida, his parents wanted him to get a college degree. It is then he asked for one more opportunity in attending Full Sail University. Today Graham is a freelancer with his own production company called Graham Z Media where he works with businesses to create commercials and on film and television sets. In this episode, Graham shares his journey to "living the dream" in becoming a freelance cinematographer and videographer. He shares his gratitude for being able to have the job he has as well as his passion for his work, specifically a documentary he made titled In Their Voices focused on the aging homeless population. We also discussed the work of Alfred Hitchcock, David Fincher, and Steven Spielberg. Graham talks about his favorite film, Jurassic Park, meeting Samuel L. Jackson at a young age, and the necessity of a film having a good story. Check out Graham Z Media on Youtube and on grahamzmedia.com to learn more about Graham and view his work! On the third episode of All the Film Things, my friend and fellow film aficionado Cole Echevarria returns for an episode of Film Finds! The “Film Finds” segment is ATFT in its most casual, spontaneous form as we talk about recent films we've watched with almost nothing prepared. In this episode, we mostly focused on the new summer releases such as Oppenheimer, Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning, Part 1, and Barbie. And yes- we do spoil some of these films. I later shared some of my recent film finds such as Le Bonheur and Wings of Desire. As we wrapped up, we talked about the films we are most looking forward to seeing this year- with both of us most excited for Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Cole has been the most frequent ATFT guest appearing in 12 episodes to date. This is the most recent episode we did which was recorded on August 23, 2023. Cole shared some hot takes on Barbie. If you have any thoughts, comments, criticisms, let us know on Instagram! Comment or DM me @all.the.film.things! On the second episode of All the Film Things, I talked with my friend and fellow film aficionado Cole Echevarria about Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 film The Wrong Man starring Henry Fonda. This episode is spoiler-filled. Alfred Hitchcock's The Wrong Man is a docudrama/ noir based on a true events that Hitchcock describes as "stranger than all the fiction that has gone into many of the thrillers" he had previously made. This is his only collaboration with Henry Fonda who stars as Christopher "Manny" Balestrero, a poor family man who becomes accused and then incarcerated for crimes he did not commit. Cole has been the most frequent ATFT guest appearing in 12 episodes to date. This is the second episode we did which we recorded back in December 2022. In the first episode he appeared on, which may be released in the coming weeks, he mentioned he is a big fan of Henry Fonda- just as I am. I recommended this film to him in hopes he would enjoy the film. Early on, it is clear he, unfortunately, did not enjoy the film as much as I did. In this episode, Cole and I discuss our differing opinions on the film, Henry Fonda's brilliant emotionally subtle performance, the excellent camera work, dissecting Hitchcock's comment on the criminal justice system in America, and much more. Towards the end of the episode, we discussed the dark parallels this film has to Henry Fonda's real life. It is a brutal subject to discuss but we hoped to do so without any controversy since we are both very much fans of the Fonda family. On the first episode of All the Film Things, I talked with film historian/ author/ lecturer Max Alvarez. Max credits developing his passion for film to his parents and seeing François Truffaut's The 400 Blows in theaters as a child. His first job in film started with indexing film reviews for the Variety newspaper. From there, Max takes us through his decades- long career from his work as a film critic, interviewing prominent figures in film such as Wim Wenders and Peter Fonda, and his work today with New Plaza Cinema in NYC. One of my favorite stories Max shares is his first and only encounter with Quentin Tarantino on the night Reservoir Dogs first premiered at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival. We also discussed the significance of the New Hollywood era, international films while especially highlighting the work of Michelangelo Antonioni, the current state of film today, and much more! Go to New Plaza Cinema's website to learn of Max's upcoming virtual lectures!
