Valenti and Rico hear from the people about the Skubal and Tigers fiasco.
More of the people chime in on the Skubal/Tigers discussion.
Valenti and Rico kicked things off with the recent news that MSU Football is having wins vacated for recruitment violations under Mel Tucker. They talked about whether there's an oversaturation of sports right now and what to make of Scott Boras' comments about the Tigers relating to Skubal before revisiting the MSU talk in the final hour.
A day after Scott Boras made some pointed comments towards the Tigers, Tarik Skubal offered some thoughts of his own, specifically about why he allowed himself to be taken out of the game in Game 5 of the ALDS.
The guys wonder if Skubal and Boras are off-base with how they're approaching the former's free agency next offseason.
Mike and Rico talked about Tarik Skubal's comments about him potentially re-signing with the Tigers and why he let A.J. Hinch take him out of Game 5 of the ALDS. Then, David gave his best bets.
The guys continued the Skubal conversation in the second hour.
The guys discuss what the Tigers should actually do when it comes to a potential contract extension for Tarik Skubal.
Clemson graduate Mark Packer returned to his alma mater last week to speak to the Fort Hill Clemson Club and to dot the "i" on the field before the Tigers' victory over Florida State. Packer has been enjoying retirement since stepping away from the ACC Network this past summer. He said working for ESPN the previous three years was highly frustrating in part because he didn't have total control over his show, and he'd get pushback whenever he stuck up for the ACC. He has plans to write a book about his professional life, and he'll include his experiences with ESPN. Packer also looks back on the iconic "Primetime with the Packman" radio show that was popular for more than a decade in North Carolina and South Carolina. He tells the remarkable story of how the 'QCB' became a fixture on the show. He also reminisces about James Brown and his entourage showing up unannounced at the Charlotte-based studios and spending a rollicking hour on the air with Packer and Co. Packer also recalls the wee hours of the Northern California night in January of 2019 when he interviewed Dabo Swinney on the field at Levi's Stadium when no one else was around. Packer thinks Swinney has to do some significant adapting to move past this disastrous season and put Clemson back on footing with the best in college football.
Another slow start followed by a fast finish left Missouri an 83-60 winner over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Wednesday night. Gabe and Drew break down the good, the bad and what it all means for the Tigers live from Mizzou Arena.

ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan has a perfect move for each of the 30 MLB teams
8:00 HOUR: The Tigers' perfect move, Bichette, Bregman, or other?
Steve Adams joins Darragh McDonald to discuss Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz getting indicted due to their involvement in a gambling scandal, Shane Bieber's surprising decision to pick up his player option with Toronto, Jack Flaherty choosing to stay in Detroit for another year, the Rays declining the option on Pete Fairbanks, Trevor Story deciding to not to opt out of his deal with the Red Sox, Gleyber Torres and Shota Imanaga getting offered qualifying offers, guys like Lucas Giolito and Devin Williams who didn't receive one, and the Rockies hiring Paul DePodesta as their new president of baseball operations despite him working most recently as an NFL executive.
Welcome back to Tablesetters, your home for deep-dive baseball conversation and analysis. Steve and Devin are here, and we're thrilled to welcome back Keith Raad, the play-by-play broadcaster for the New York Mets on WCBS 880, returning to the show for the first time since Episode 37. Keith works alongside Mets Hall of Famer Howie Rose, bringing fans every pitch, every rally, and every unforgettable moment of Mets baseball. You can follow Keith on X @keithraad and hear him live all season long on the Mets' broadcast. In this episode, we take a hard look at one of the most compelling—and confounding—teams in baseball. The 2025 Mets went from owning MLB's best record through mid-June to missing the postseason entirely, a collapse defined by bullpen fatigue, record-setting pitching turnover, and a clubhouse tested by adversity. Keith offers firsthand insight from the booth, breaking down what made the first-half magic so special, how Carlos Mendoza held the group together through the storm, and what lessons the team can carry forward into 2026. From there, we dig into the offseason storylines dominating Queens: the opt-outs of Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz, what their market value truly looks like, and whether David Stearns can retain both without compromising the organization's flexibility. We explore the reported “culture reset” and the trade chatter around Jeff McNeil, assessing how the front office might reshape this roster's identity around its long-term superstar core. Then we turn to the rotation and a rumor with real traction: Tarik Skubal. The 2024 AL Cy Young winner has been linked to the Mets amid uncertainty over his future in Detroit, and Ken Rosenthal recently called New York “the obvious team” if the Tigers can't extend him. Keith breaks down how that potential pursuit could affect the Mets' 2026 plans and whether Stearns might resist handing out long-term deals this winter to keep the door open for Skubal next year. Of course, the conversation also highlights the organization's young foundation—Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, and arms like Brandon Sproat, Nolan McLean, and Jonah Tong—and what their continued growth could mean for a rotation in transition. Keith offers sharp in sight on Vientos' long-term potential, and how Soto's arrival has redefined the team's competitive identity. We close by revisiting a landmark moment in franchise history—the retirement of David Wright's No. 5—and hearing Keith's reflections on what that night symbolized for the organization and for a fanbase that still sees Wright as its moral compass. Finally, Keith shares what it means to be the voice behind a franchise now firmly entering the Juan Soto era, and what he hopes to deliver to Mets fans in 2026 and beyond. This is one episode you won't want to miss. Grab your headphones, settle in, and enjoy a conversation that captures the emotion, intelligence, and future of Mets baseball—right here on Tablesetters, where every inning tells a story and every pitch sets the stage for the game's greatest moments. And don't forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @tablesetterspod for exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and interactive fan polls. We want to hear from you!

Thanks to Viki, Erin, Weller, and Stella for their suggestions this week! Further reading: Tasmanian tiger pups found to be extraordinary similar to wolf pups The thylacine could open its jaws really wide: A sugar glider, gliding [photo from this page]: A happy quokka and a happy person: A swimming platypus: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to learn about some marsupial mammals suggested by Erin, Weller, and Stella, and a bonus non-marsupial from Australia suggested by Viki. Marsupials are mammals that give birth to babies that aren't fully formed yet, and the babies then finish developing in the mother's pouch. Not all female marsupials actually have a pouch, although most do. Marsupials are extremely common in Australia, but they're also found in most other places around the world. Let's start with Weller's suggestion, the Tasmanian tiger. We've talked about it before, but not recently. We talked about it in our very first episode, in fact! Despite its name, it isn't related to the tiger at all. Tigers are placental mammals, and the Tasmanian tiger is a marsupial. It's also called the thylacine to make things less confusing. The thylacine was declared extinct after the last known individual died in captivity in 1936, but sightings have continued ever since. It's not likely that a population is still around these days, but the thylacine is such a great animal that people hold out hope that it has survived and will one day be rediscovered. It got the name Tasmanian tiger because when European colonizers arrived in Tasmania, they saw a striped animal the size of a big dog, about two feet high at the shoulder, or 61 cm, and over six feet long if you included the long tail, or 1.8 meters. It was yellowish-brown with black stripes on the back half of its body and down its tail, with a doglike head and rounded ears. The thylacine was a nocturnal marsupial native to mainland Australia and the Australian island of Tasmania, but around 4,000 years ago, climate change caused more and longer droughts in eastern Australia and the thylacine population there went extinct. By 3,000 years ago, all the mainland thylacines had gone extinct, leaving just the Tasmanian population. The Tasmanian thylacines underwent a population crash around the same time that the mainland Australia populations went extinct—but the Tasmanian population had recovered and was actually increasing when Europeans showed up and started shooting them. The thylacine mostly ate small animals like ducks, water rats, and bandicoots. Its skull was very similar in shape to the wolf, which it wasn't related to at all, but its muzzle was longer and its jaws were comparatively much weaker. Its jaws could open incredibly wide, which usually indicates an animal that attacks prey much larger than it is, but studies of the thylacine's jaws and teeth show that they weren't strong enough for the stresses of attacking large animals. Next, Stella wanted to learn about the sugar glider, and I was surprised that we haven't talked about it before. It's a nocturnal marsupial native to the forests of New Guinea and parts of Australia, with various subspecies kept as exotic pets in some parts of the world. It's called a glider because of the animal's ability to glide. It has a flap of skin between its front and back legs, called a patagium, and when it stretches its legs out, the patagia tighten and act as a parachute. This is similar to other gliding animals, like the flying squirrel. The sugar glider resembles a rodent, but it isn't. It's actually a type of possum. It lives in trees and has a partially prehensile tail that helps it climb around more easily, and of course it can glide from tree to tree. It's an omnivore that eats insects, spiders, and other small animals, along with plant material, mainly sap. It will gnaw little holes in a tree to get at the sap or gum that ...
