Dante the pilgrim has claimed that indeed he is the one who is inspired by love, who writes what love breathes into him and then makes meaning from that.Bongiunta is not finished with that discussion. Instead, he goes on to name this inspiration the "sweet new style" (or the "dolce stil novo"), thereby igniting over seven hundred years of commentary and controversy. And Bonagiunta himself seems to throw some fuel on that fire, given his apparent satisfaction with himself. And Dante the poet may add some fuel, too, given his citation of classical sources, hardly breathed-in inspiration.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, for this most daunting passage in all of PURGATORIO, striking near the heart of what Dante the poet believes he's doing . . . and what generations of critics and thinkers believe he's doing. If you'd like to help support this podcast, please consider a very small monthly stipend or a one-time donation through this PayPal link right here. By Adam Turteltaub Do you ever wish you were made of rubber, especially nowadays with so much change? Do you wish that you could be flexible enough to handle every new legal regulatory change or every business demand without breaking? It's not likely to happen, but compliance industry veteran Lisa Beth Lentini Walker believes that we can become more resilient. Resilience, she observes, is a mindset. We can work to become more adaptable and open to change by framing it in the right way. If you look at it with dread, you are less likely to succeed. But, if you recognize that nothing is permanent, change is inevitable and focus on what needs to be done, the chances of success are much greater. Look at change as an opportunity to shine and show leadership. Become the person who management trusts to look to the future and find the path forward for the organization. The workforce, too, wants to know that they can count on you to keep them safe and the company operating strongly. Listen in to learn more about becoming resilient and an effective compliance leader during changing times. Episode 58 When Michelle Taylor lost her son in a tragic house fire, she thought the nightmare couldn't get worse. She was wrong. Fueled by junk science, broken forensics, and a crime lab running on expired credibility, the prosecutors turned a grieving mother into a murder suspect. Twelve debris samples. Twelve false positives. And a justice system more interested in closing a case than finding the truth. This is the story of how bad science—and worse judgment—can burn an innocent life to the ground. Michelle Taylor stands for sentencing on May 30th. The fire didn't destroy her life. The system did. A mother's grief. A lab's lies. A system that chose conviction over truth. This is Michelle Taylor's story. This podcast is a true crime podcast about arson and criminal fires. Listener discretion is recommended. This episode is a conversation between the artist Ana Vaz and the curator Damian Lentini. It was recorded on 7 March, 2025 in the context of the exhibition: Ana Vaz Meteoro 8.4. – 18.5.2025 In her film-poems artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz collages images and sounds that revolve around violence and repression, the impact of ecological ruin and the continued colonization of the earth. The deconstruction of the grand narrative of Western modernity that imposes itself across vast territories on this planet lies at the heart of her filmography. In her exhibition at the Secession, Vaz showcases her new film series Meteoro (2023–). Predominantly focusing on Paris and Porto, European cities are depicted as on the verge of collapse or on the path to extinction. More Ana Vaz is an artist and filmmaker born in the Brazilian midwest inhabited by the ghosts buried by its modernist capital: Brasília. Originally from the cerrado and wanderer by choice, Ana has lived in the arid lands of central Brazil and southern Australia, in the mangroves of northern France and in the northeastern shores of the Atlantic. Her filmography activates and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and instrument capable of transforming human perception, expanding its connections with forms of life — other than human or spectral. Her film-poems are marked by a constant experimental defiance to the poetic forms of contemporary cinema, highlighting the profound contradictions of our time and questioning, above all, the destructive practices of colonial modernity. Consequences or expansion of her cinematography, her activities are also embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations or collective walks. Damian Lentini is a curator at the Vienna Secession. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2009 at the University of Melbourne and has realised major projects with artists such as El Anatsui, Phyllida Barlow, Kapwani Kiwanga, Sarah Sze, Sung Tieu, Raqs Media Collective, Harun Farocki, Dumb Type, Khvay Samnang, Lina Lapelytė and the Karrabing Film Collective amongst others. This episode is a conversation between the artist Rochelle Feinstein and the curator Damian Lentini. It was recorded on 3 December, 2024 in the context of the exhibition: Rochelle Feinstein The Today Show 6.12.2024 – 23.2.2025 For over forty years, the American painter Rochelle Feinstein has developed an oeuvre that infiltrates abstract painting with political, social and environmental concerns. Throughout a series of diverse yet thematically interwoven groups of works, Feinstein cuts, flips, and rearranges printed gestural marks that are then collaged into paintings; she also makes sculptures and prints out of everyday materials. The Today Show presents a range of newly created works that circulate around the question of how to connect canvas, color and gesture with the specific personal and public conditions of our time. More Rochelle Feinstein is a painter navigating the terrain of abstract painting as it unfolds across diverse and thematically interwoven bodies of work. Geometric forms—the modernist trope of the grid is a regular presence—and vibrant chroma become tools to explore notions of artistic value and production, societal structures, and feminist idioms. Though it takes myriad forms, her singular project always centers painting within culture at large. While drawing upon the conventions embedded in painting practices as much those of contemporary culture, her works incorporate drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. In our 2025 kickoff episode, Lisa speaks with Lisa Beth Lentini Walker, Deputy General Counsel, Corporate Legal, and Assistant Secretary at Marqeta, the CEO and Founder of Lumen Worldwide Endeavors. Lisa Beth is also a mentor, advocate, and friend to many in the compliance community. While many people consider a CECO role their ultimate career goal, others look to a more GC-focused role. In the past few years, Lisa Beth's career has evolved in that way while she remains involved in compliance. In this episode, she talks about her role, how serendipity and planning helped her get to where she is, and how it is important to be intentional while staying open to new opportunities. In discussing 2025, Lisa Beth notes that her theme of the year is “consistency” and how this is important not only in work but also in being present with family, friends, and community. In terms of the ethics and compliance landscape, they discuss how this will likely be a year of change in regulations in the US and globally and the importance of being agile. Lisa Beth was recently certified by Women in AI Governance as a Founding Quantum Member. She discusses the importance of learning about AI for E&C professionals and says this is a good time to start a wide learning journey in AI as the field expands. In the earlier GWIC iteration, Ellen Hunt joined Lisa every year to discuss the state of the function before she officially joined “Team GWIC,” we hope Lisa Beth will reflect with us next year, too.
Maria Elisa Aloisi è nata a Lentini e vive a Catania, dove lavora come avvocato penalista. Zhou Siwei translates the contradictions of living and working in contemporary China into playful, personally fragmented and nonlinear works on canvas and painted objects. This podcast was recorded on 19 June 2024 in the context of the exhibition: Zhou Siwei I Sold What I Grow 21.6. – 8.9.2024 Probing the ambivalence of digital technologies, the unceasing global traffic in goods, and the sleeplessness of the late-capitalist era, Zhou interweaves diverse visual and cultural influences in ways that make everyday items and signs feel at once familiar and alien, accommodating a wide range of interpretations. More Zhou Siwei is an artist whose work focuses on the interrelation between people's understanding of culture and the effects of culture on people. This week on A Voice and Beyond, we have part 2 of a two-part episode with Dana Lentini, a noted pedagogue who is an expert in teaching the child singer. In today's episode, Dana delves deeper into some of the methodologies she has developed for training young singers. Dana describes some of the pathways she has created to teach technique in its most simplest form for children, in order to give them a whole comprehensive experience in the singing lesson.Dana debunks many of the myths surrounding teaching young children, such as, it is dangerous to teach children to sing, that it is not possible to teach them technique, and that children do not have the attention span to sit through a singing lesson. Dana explains that it is all good things in moderation for the child singer, especially when it comes to intensity and duration. Dana also shares some of her concerns around the master-apprentice model and tells us that it is important to be student-focused when we teach children. We must pace lessons for them so they stay engaged and have fun, even while they are still learning the fundamentals of singing.Dana believes that if we are receptive to the idea of working with this age group, not only can it open our doors to a larger community of students, but it can be a most joyful and rewarding experience. This episode is packed with so much valuable information, remember this is part 2 of my interview with Dana Lentini, and if you missed part 1, it was last week's episode no 117.Find Dana OnlineDana's WebsiteDana's FacebookDana's InstagramDana's LinkedInDana's BookIn this Episode1:15 – Introduction3:41 - Teaching fun little foundational techniques9:00 - Dana's book and how it came to be21:04 - Myth around teaching children voice lessons and technique28:28 - How to deal with the children's parents40:15 - Advice in wrapping up the episode For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/118Like this episode? This week on A Voice and Beyond, we have part 1 of a two-part episode with Dana Lentini, who is a noted pedagogue and the author of Teaching the Child Singer: Pediatric Pedagogy for Ages 5-13. Dana is an expert in teaching methodologies for this age group, and her articles and podcasts have been distributed worldwide. In this episode, Dana addresses many of the myths surrounding teaching young children and why there is such a resistance towards teaching pre-pubescent singers amongst many teachers. Dana firmly believes that there needs to be a mindset shift around teaching this age group, because if teachers do so, they will find there are many benefits, not only for children, but also their parents e.g., singing does not require the purchase of an expensive instrument but will still offer many musical benefits for the child. Everyone, irrespective of age can discover and celebrate their unique voice through singing, including children. Dana affirms that teaching children to sing can set them up for success while they go through the voice transition during puberty.Dana also shares her ideas around the master-apprentice model and tells us that teaching children in the same way we were taught at a university, is not the way to teach this age group. We must pace lessons for children, so they stay engaged and have fun – even while they are still learning the fundamentals of singing. Dana describes some of the pathways she has created to teach technique in its most simplest form, in order to give a whole comprehensive experience in the singing lesson. This episode is packed with so much valuable information, and remember it is only part 1 of my interview with Dana Lentini and part 2 will be released next week.Find Dana OnlineWebsite: https://www.born2singkids.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dana.lentiniInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lentinidana/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dana-lentini-9a480537/Book: https://www.halleonard.com/product/371932/singing-kids-songbook-level-1In this Episode1:15 – Introduction5:51 – Singing as a child for Dana.9:33 – How she started teaching children. 15:02 – Singing doesn't require the purchase of an expensive instrument.28:11 – Benefits of group classes34:49 – Impact of cultural traditions on children's singing voice41:47 – Born to sing kidsFor more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/117Like this episode? By Adam Turteltaub ESG, cyber risk and privacy are all hot topics in compliance, but that doesn't mean people typically identify the data issues as ESG topics. Lisa Beth Lentini Walker (LinkedIn), CEO & Founder of Lumen Worldwide Endeavors and Assistant General Counsel at Marqueta, thinks that's a mistake. Cyber and privacy, she believes, fall very much under the Social in Environmental Social and Governance. Just look at the many ethical issues surrounding data usage these days as proof. She explains in this podcast and in the chapter “ESG, Cyber and Privacy: Bridging the Divide” in the 2023 Complete Compliance & Ethics Manual, that privacy and security are not separate and apart from ESG. They are central to how the organization navigates the world and people around it. Keeping data secure is squarely under the social mission of the enterprise. To live up to that obligation, organizations have to focus more on keeping data safe and building proper systems around how individuals interact with the data. Simply believing “well, we have a good practice” is not enough. The practices have to support the ESG framework in terms of meeting the company's commitments. In addition, the temptation to be data hoarders has to be tempered. Collecting data is easy to do, and it's generally inexpensive to store. That makes it easy to rationalize indefinite retention. But, a clear path to data destruction is essential. Think of it like cleaning out the closet. It may not be easy, but it needs to get done. Organizations also need to embrace greater transparency about the processes in place to safeguard and use data. That helps investors and rating agencies better assess how the entity is measuring up against the SASB and other standards. Listen in to learn more, and then check out the 2023 Complete Compliance & Ethics Manual.
