When Cree-Salteaux theatre-maker Margo Kane started trying out for theatre gigs in Canada in the 1970s, there were so few roles for Indigenous actors, she ended up auditioning for the same part more than once. That all changed when she wrote her own one woman show, Moonlodge that became a classic of Canadian theatre. She's in Australia to show her new one-woman show, and reflect on her career.Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was a big international hit for the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar in the 1980s. Now it's a crazy, funny, kitschy musical coming to Sydney's Hayes Theatre. We talk about the impact of the film and how director and performer Alex Berlage and Grace Driscoll are bringing it to life in 2025.New play Thirst, by Barbara Hostalek, is set in a lonely run-down country pub called The Glass Slipper somewhere in Western Australia. The place is on its last legs. But maybe the new owners can turn it around with a high stakes karaoke night! Actors Leah Pigram, Jarrad Inman and Maitland Schnaars from Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company perform a scene. For our series Back Stage, we meet international set designer Anna Cordingley, who hand draws her designs among many other talents.
On the fortieth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with professor/ author James Miller! James Miller is a liberal studies professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He wrote music reviews for Rolling Stone in the 70s and spent much of the 80s reviewing books and writing pop music criticism for Newsweek. Among Jim's many accomplishments, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and his work continues to be published in magazines, peer- reviewed academic journals, and newspapers. Jim has written several books over the course of his decades- spanning career focused on various subject matters from philosophy (Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche) to politics (Can Democracy Work? A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World) to music. His book Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock & Roll won the ASCAP- Deems Taylor Award for the best music book written of 1999.Jim's latest book, the first he's written focused on film, is titled The Passion of Pedro Almodóvar: A Self- Portrait in Seven Films and will be published through Columbia University Press on April 29. Through this book, Jim examines the work, and by extension self, of Almodóvar through his most personal films. This book will be available for purchase wherever books are sold so preorder your copy now on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.! You'll definitely want to click this link to preorder the book on Barnes & Noble!: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-passion-of-pedro-almodovar-james-miller/1146504374;jsessionid=473B373D1171A12E15F5B951CC989AA7.prodny_store01-atgap07 If you're in the New York area, Jim will be sitting down with Robert Polito for an hour- long conversation on pub day about his book at the New School at 6 pm. Learn more about this event by clicking this link!: https://event.newschool.edu/booklunchjimmillerThis is Jim's first appearance on ATFT! I wouldn't have had the opportunity to interview him without two- time ATFT guest, film historian Max Alvarez presenting me with this opportiunity. I'm very grateful to him and Sarah C. Noell of Columbia University Press for helping bring this interview into fruition. Before reading Jim's book, I had seen three Almodóvar films and the latter two, Parallel Mothers (2021) and All About My Mother (1999), blew me away. For a few years now, I had been wanting to go through Almodóvar's work but his films are not so easy to come by. Reading Jim's brilliant, analytical book was the perfect opportunity to finally dive in, leaving me completely changed. Why aren't people talking about Almodóvar?! Quentin Tarantino was right when he said Almodóvar is largely underrated in the US. This episode was recorded on April 3, 2025. In this episode, Jim shares incredible stories from his career from gettign a private concert from Paul McCartney to inspiring a Jimi Hendrix song. We talk about some of cinema's greatest filmmakers, such as Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock, before discussing the work of Pedro Almodóvar for much of the episode. Filmmakers and film aficionados will especially enjoy this episode. Jim also talks about the impact of Michelangelo Antoninoni's Blow-up (1966) , Almodóvar's dynamic with muse Penélope Cruz, and inspiring Tom Hayden to write his memoir. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!P.S.) If you're listening on Spotify, share your thoughts on Pedro Almodóvar in the comments! We have differing levels of experience with the filmography of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar here at SFFCH, but none of us have seen what is probably his most well known film, Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a zany, dark comedy about women on the…verge of a…nervous breakdown…yeah. So come and find out: … Continue reading "447: Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown [1988] Movie Discussion"
We meet bestselling writer Shon Faye to discuss her new book Love In Exile and artists she admires: Nan Goldin, The Bloomsbury Group, Bernini, Michelangelo, Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education and performers including Tom Rasmussen, Madonna and David Hoyle.Shon Faye grew up quietly obsessed with the feeling that love was not for her. Not just romantic love: the secret fear of her own unworthiness penetrated every aspect and corner of her life. It was a fear that would erupt in destructive, counterfeit versions of the real love she craved: addictions and short-lived romances that were either euphoric and fantastical, or excruciatingly painful and unhinged, often both. Faye's experience of the world as a trans woman, who grew up visibly queer, exacerbated her fears. But, as she confronted her damaging ideas about love and lovelessness, she came to realize that this sense of exclusion is symptomatic of a much larger problem in our culture.Love, she argues, is as much a collective question as a personal one. Yet our collective ideals of love have developed in a society which is itself profoundly sick and loveless; in which consumer capitalism sells us ever new, engrossing fantasies of becoming more loved or lovable. In this highly politicized terrain, boundaries are purposefully drawn to keep some in and to keep others out. Those who exist outside them are ignored, denigrated, exiled. In Love in Exile, Shon Faye shows love is much greater than the narrow ideals we have been taught to crave so desperately that we are willing to bend and break ourselves to fit them. Wise, funny, unsparing, and suffused with a radical clarity, this is a book of and for our times: for seeing and knowing love, in whatever form it takes, is the meaning of life itself.Shon Faye is author of the acclaimed bestseller The Transgender Issue. Her work has been published in, among others, the Guardian, Independent, British Vogue and VICE. Born in Bristol, she now lives in London. As Frieze magazine recently wrote: Shon Faye is one of the most celebrated non-fiction authors in the UK, rising to fame for her discerning prose on culture, relationships and class. Her first book, The Transgender Issue (2021), a provocative treatise on gender identity debates in the UK, was part of her rise to fame. Not only did Faye offer a detailed survey of queer history, but she also indicated why trans-liberation is connected to liberation for all. Her new book of essays, Love in Exile (2025), explores the existential and social challenges of courtship and heartache. Rather than focus solely on the discrimination that many transgender people face, however, the text is a literary memoir that interrogates how ancient and present-day writers conceptualize and dissect love. As a Vogue contributor with her advice column ‘Dear Shon' (2022–ongoing), host of the podcast Call Me Mother (2021–ongoing) and author of Dazed & Confused Magazine's ‘Future of Sex' series (2022–ongoing), she addresses the topic of romance with honesty and poise.Follow @Shon.Faye on InstagramBuy Love in Exile, published by Pengiun. You can also follow @TalkArt for images of all artworks discussed in today's episode. Just before a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hamas, Christiane sat down with Biden's top diplomat, outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his final television interview. She asked him about the details of the deal, calls from Israeli ministers to resettle Gaza, criticism of IDF conduct, and America's role in Vladimir Putin's all-out invasion of Ukraine. Blinken also shares his concerns about passing the baton to Trump and Marco Rubio, just days before Donald Trump takes the oath of office for a second term. Then, Hanako Montgomery reports on a surge of crime among female pensioners in fast-aging Japan, landing themselves in prison where they are taken care of in their old age. And, oscar-winning, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar joins Christiane to discuss his new film "The Room Next Door," his first English language feature portraying death among friends, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. When it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, much of the focus is on Gaza. From her archive, Christiane revisits her 2007 report exploring the alliance between Christian evangelicals in the U.S. and Israel's settler movement. She highlights that evangelicals continue to influence president-elect Donald Trump and Republican politics to this day. Finally, “Babygirl” Director Halina Reign speaks to Christiane about the bold erotic thriller stirring up conversation and awards buzz, starring Nicole Kidman. Learn more about your ad choices. Introducing Julianne Moore at the New Yorker Festival, in October, the staff writer Michael Schulman recited “only a partial list” of the directors Moore has worked with, including Robert Altman, Louis Malle, Todd Haynes, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lisa Cholodenko, Steven Spielberg, the Coen brothers, and many more legends. It seems almost obvious that Moore co-stars (alongside Tilda Swinton) in Pedro Almodóvar's first feature in English, “The Room Next Door,” which comes out in December. Moore has a particular knack with unremarkable characters. “I don't know that I seek out things in the domestic space, but I do think I'm really drawn to ordinary lives,” she tells Schulman. “I've never been, like, I'm going to play an astronaut next. . . . A lot of these stories [are] domestic stories—well, that's the biggest story of our lives, right? How do we live? Who do we love? . . . Those are the things that we all know about.”New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Follow the show wherever you get your podcasts.

Filmed over six years, "The Silence of Others" reveals how survivors and their families have struggled to cope in the aftermath of Spain's 40-year dictatorship under General Franco. The film, executive produced by Pedro Almodóvar, follows the victims as they organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight a “pact of forgetting” around the crimes they suffered. Survivors of the dictatorship and human rights lawyers built a case in Argentina that Spanish courts refuse to hear. Maria Hinojosa speaks about the film with its directors, Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar. This episode originally aired in 2019.Follow us on TikTok and YouTube. This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with author Sigrid Nunez. With her novels The Friend (winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction) and What Are You Going Through, New York–based author Sigrid Nunez has supplied the extraordinarily rich source material for not one, but two films in the NYFF62 lineup: Scott McGehee and David Siegel's Spotlight standout The Friend, starring Naomi Watts as a writer mourning the complicated loss of a beloved mentor; and Pedro Almodóvar's Centerpiece selection The Room Next Door, which follows another writer (Julianne Moore) as she reconnects with a friend from her past (Tilda Swinton) who approaches her with an unusual request. We were honored to welcome Nunez for a special conversation about her prismatic literary meditations on grief, friendship, and the passage of time; the experience of seeing her creative work adapted into other mediums; and cinema's alchemical capacity to both translate and transform a novel's meaning. This conversation was moderated by A.O. Scott, critic at large for The New York Times Book Review. A New York Times Critic's Pick, Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door is now playing at FLC. Alessandro Nivola returns to the podcast (Ep. 37 and Ep.170) to discuss three performances he gives in three different films out at the same time this week—Pedro Almodóvar's “The Room Next Door,” “The Brutalist,” and “Kraven The Hunter.” He gifts us with a detailed peek into what it took to build each of these characters. He talks about the interesting way he received a “green light” from Almodóvar in terms of his approach to the role of an Upstate New York policeman, the challenge of balancing adherence to period authenticity with a modern accessibly as Attila in Brady Corbet's epic, tells the thrilling story of how he found a way to bypass the Marvel committee approval to bring his version of The Rhino to life while miraculously having a creatively fulfilling time in the process, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
SEASON 2 - EPISODE 119 - Edu Grau - Cinematographer Cinematographer Edu Grau (THE ROOM NEXT DOOR, PASSING, A SINGLE MAN) joins us in this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. After an encouraging compliment from his art teacher, Edu attended a then-newly established film school in his hometown of Barcelona where he learned to foster his passion for filmmaking. Edu shares with us how, after a six month drought from work, he was selected by director Tom Ford to shoot A SINGLE MAN, and we reflect on working with actor/directors pulling double-duty. We later discuss Edu's involvement on PASSING and the joy of shooting in black-and-white, and we ruminate on the nature of prep and the nagging anxiety of riding around in the van. Towards the end of the conversation, we later learn how Edu approached his work on THE ROOM NEXT DOOR and eschewed naturalism to help realize director Pedro Almodóvar's unique vision. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with The Room Next Door director Pedro Almodóvar and cast members Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro. The Room Next Door opens at Film at Lincoln Center on December 20th. Get tickets a filmlinc.org/room Ingrid (Julianne Moore), a best-selling writer, rekindles her relationship with her friend Martha (Tilda Swinton), a war journalist with whom she has lost touch for a number of years. The two women immerse themselves in their pasts, sharing memories, anecdotes, art, movies—yet Martha has a request that will test their newly strengthened bond. Pedro Almodóvar's finely sculpted drama, his first English-language feature, is the unmistakable work of a master filmmaker, a hushed and humane portrayal of the beauty of life and the inevitability of death, graced with incandescent performances by Moore and Swinton that tap the very essence of being. Adapting Sigrid Nunez's treasure of a novel, What Are You Going Through, Almodóvar has exquisitely reframed his career-long fascination with the lives of women for an American vernacular, capturing Manhattan and upstate New York with enraptured affection. This conversation was moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim.

Lo contó Carlos Alsina en Onda Cero...
During the 2024 New York Film Festival, Film Comment's Devika Girish had the chance to chat with Julianne Moore, one of the great American actresses of the last three decades and more. She was at the festival for the premiere of The Room Next Door, the first English-language feature film by Pedro Almodóvar, which stars Moore as a writer in New York who reconnects with an old friend, now in the late stages of cancer, played by Tilda Swinton. The friend makes a strange request of Moore's character: to give her company in a house in upstate New York where she plans to take her own life using a euthanasia pill. Almodóvar's film unfolds like a chamber drama, honing in on the awkward but tender companionship of two women in an absurd and dark situation, as they try to figure out how to enjoy the day-to-day of their togetherness while anticipating death. The Room Next Door hinges on its lead performances, and Moore and Swinton rise to the task with luminous turns that imbue the beautifully designed, fantasy world of Almodovar's film with a rough-edged, piercing emotional realism. Devika's conversation with Moore delves into the challenge of inhabiting the unreal worlds of Almodóvar with realism, as well as Moore's relationship with Swinton, how she acts with her voice, and whether it's difficult to play a good person in the movies.
