Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2026 78:11

In April 2024 25-year-old Kennedi Westcarr-Sabaroche was a social media marketer and mother from East London who was found dead in her car being having been strangled and attacked.  Days before her death, Kennedi told a friend she was “on a break” from her relationship with Gogoa Lois Tape. But Tape lured her to meet him under false pretences and strangled her in the driver's seat of her own car—for eight minutes.   Tape was charged with murder, but prosecutors ultimately accepted a guilty plea to the lesser offence of manslaughter by diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act with a restriction order under Section 41. This means he will not serve a day in prison.   In this episode, Laura applies her expertise in behavioural analysis to determine whether there were coercive and controlling behaviours prior to Kennedi's death and examines Tepe's post offence behaviour where he confesses to murder.  Did he have clarity of mind and a consciousness of guilt? Did the court get it right? Just five months after sentencing, there was a move to apply for escorted leave for Tape. Linda is aggrieved and shares and why this is not justice.  In this episode Laura and Linda discuss:  Victimology: Kennedi's life and the person she was beyond the headlines;  The antecedents to Kennedi's death;   Behavioural patterns and warning signs that should never be ignored;   The impact of coercive control and escalating abuse;  The family's experience of the investigation and court process;   The intersection of violent offending, mental illness and public safety;  Why victims and families deserve to be heard;  What needs to change to better protect women and prevent future homicides.   #KennediWestcarrSabaroche #CrimeAnalyst #LauraRichards #DomesticAbuse #CoerciveControl #MaleViolence #Femicide #Expert #Analysis #Victimology #HomicidePrevention #TrueCrime #Podcast   Clip   https://www.tiktok.com/@yeamasaphar3/video/7607190671186726166?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc   Support Crime Analyst   If you value these conversations, please follow, rate, and review Crime Analyst wherever you listen to podcasts. There's a trend that you might not have heard of until now, men guiding women on a hike, then losing them. Or worse. Let's get into it.The situation regarding women going missing or being abandoned by male hiking companions—often referred to as the "Alpine Divorce" trend—has gone viral on social media. It involves male partners abandoning or storming ahead of female hikers, leaving them vulnerable to extreme environments. Tragic incidents have even resulted in manslaughter convictions1. The "Alpine Divorce" Phenomenon - The Trend: Women have shared stories on platforms like TikTok detailing experiences where male partners pushed them beyond their limits, stormed ahead to reach summits, or abandoned them in unfamiliar territory. The Consequences: In January 2025, an Austrian mountaineer was convicted of manslaughter after leaving his exhausted girlfriend on a mountain, where she froze to death. The Intent: While some incidents are driven by male ego and impatience, outdoor advocates warn that these actions can be premeditated or life-threatening.2. Search and Rescue OperationsRecent Cases: For example, the search for a 49-year-old female hiker, Jaslinda Saludin, on Malaysia's Gunung Batu Putih trail gained widespread attention. She became separated from a group that included mountain guides and was the subject of intensive search and rescue efforts.Cold Cases: Many historical disappearances highlight the dangers of being left behind. Notably, the disappearance of Michelle Vanek on Colorado's Mount of the Holy Cross gained closure when a female-led rescue team successfully used modern technology to locate her remains nearly two decades later.3. Outdoor Safety and ResponsibilityPartner Dynamics: Experts advise that if a partner abandons you in dangerous or unfamiliar terrain to achieve their own hiking goals, it is a significant relationship red flag.Preparation: Wilderness experts stress the importance of carrying independent gear (like emergency blankets and communication devices) and sticking with hiking partners of similar fitness levels and experience.Show Sources and Materials:Women are being abandoned by their partners on hiking trails. Laken Snelling: The Manslaughter Charge, the Phone Record, and Whether the Evidence Holds

This week in True Crime Today's Week in Review, the Laken Snelling case receives the legal and evidentiary examination it requires. University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling has been indicted on first-degree manslaughter following the death of her newborn son, who was found by her roommates on August 27, 2025 — wrapped in a towel inside a black trash bag in her closet. The Kentucky Medical Examiner confirmed the infant was born alive. Cause of death: asphyxia by undetermined means. Snelling is currently held at the Fayette County Detention Center facing up to 31 years.Tony Brueski lays out the evidentiary record in full: the deleted labor photos, the private week-by-week pregnancy tracking, and months of documented concealment that ran parallel to a public life including the April 2025 national cheerleading championship and social media posts about wanting to be a mother. The 4 a.m. timeline. The roommates' account. The word "guessed." The whimper she admitted hearing. The trash bag. All of it on the record before the legal analysis begins.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer assesses the prosecution's position with precision — whether the physical and digital evidence is sufficient to sustain a first-degree manslaughter charge through trial, what "guessed" is going to require the state to prove, and how the roommates' acceptance of the "I fainted" explanation factors into the evidentiary picture at trial. Behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke examines the phone record as documentation of intent — distinguishing active months-long parallel concealment from reactive denial and explaining why that distinction sits at the center of a conscious disregard argument. The broader legal question this case raises is one Coffindaffer and Dreeke address directly: what does prosecution look like when the defendant is 22, has no prior record, and doesn't match jury expectations — and the only witness who mattered had no voice? Laken Snelling has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Laken Snelling case is built on a specific legal threshold — first-degree manslaughter, conscious disregard — and the question of whether the evidence as it currently exists can sustain that charge through trial. That is the central legal question this episode addresses.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins True Crime Today alongside Robin Dreeke for a precise legal and procedural analysis of the Snelling case — the indictment, the evidence record, and the prosecution's path forward. The grand jury heard all four levels of criminal homicide. They landed on manslaughter. That choice — conscious disregard over negligence — is a meaningful legal finding, and Coffindaffer examines what the prosecution had to show the grand jury to get there, and what they will need to demonstrate at trial to hold it. She works through each major piece of evidence: the phone documentation, the deleted labor photos, the pregnancy tracking, the months of documented concealment, and how each element translates into legal weight under the conscious disregard standard. The single word "guessed" — used by Snelling when hospital staff asked whether her son was alive — is analyzed in specific legal terms. Coffindaffer addresses how hedged language of that nature is used when the medical examiner has already placed "born alive" in the record, and what it means for the prosecution's intent narrative. The roommate element is examined procedurally: whether their 4 a.m. acceptance of "I fainted" and return to bed constitutes something investigators had to formally account for, and whether it surfaces at trial.Dreeke adds the behavioral framework that the prosecution will need to explain to a jury — particularly around why the documented concealment pattern reflects calculated awareness rather than psychological crisis, and why that distinction matters under the law.Up to 31 years. The charge is serious. The evidence is substantial. The legal path is specific. This is the breakdown that case deserves.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Laken Snelling's phone told a story that months of public behavior was built to contradict. Deleted labor photos. Week-by-week pregnancy tracking. A documented record of concealment running alongside nationals competitions, a relationship, and a TikTok listing "be a mom" as a life goal. A grand jury saw all four levels of criminal homicide and landed on first-degree manslaughter — conscious disregard. Now the question is whether that charge holds.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Hidden Killers alongside Robin Dreeke to examine the Laken Snelling case from the inside — the evidence, the charge, the gaps, and where the prosecution and defense are each most exposed.Coffindaffer works through the evidentiary record with precision. The phone documentation and what it legally establishes. The word "guessed" — the language Snelling used with hospital staff when asked whether her son was alive — and how prosecutors use hedged language in a case where the medical examiner has already established the child was born alive. The roommates who heard noise for an hour at 4 in the morning, accepted a fainting explanation, and went back to bed — and whether that peripheral behavior ever becomes something the prosecution has to actively account for at trial.Dreeke addresses the behavioral layer: what the sustained parallel concealment documented on that phone reveals, how it differs from denial or dissociation, and where it sits on the behavioral spectrum of neonaticide cases. He also addresses the jury challenge — what it means to ask twelve people to hold a 22-year-old competitive athlete with no criminal record to a standard of conscious disregard when she doesn't match the assumptions most jurors carry into a case like this. The charge is first-degree manslaughter. Up to 31 years. The evidence is compelling in places and complicated in others. This is where it gets examined honestly.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Former University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling has been indicted on first-degree manslaughter in the death of her newborn son, whose body was discovered by her roommates on August 27, 2025, wrapped in a towel inside a black trash bag in the closet of her off-campus Lexington apartment. The Kentucky Medical Examiner confirmed the infant was born alive. Cause of death: asphyxia by undetermined means. On March 12, 2026, Snelling was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center. She faces up to 31 years.Tony Brueski of Hidden Killers breaks down the case from the beginning — and the beginning matters. This is not a story that starts at 4 a.m. on August 27th. It starts months earlier, with a full-term pregnancy Snelling concealed from everyone around her while privately tracking it week by week on her phone. It includes a national cheerleading championship performance in April 2025, couples photo shoots in June that observers described as maternity photos, and a final TikTok post listing "be a mom" as a life goal — all while the evidence shows she had no intention of anyone finding out. When investigators executed search warrants on her phone and social media accounts, they found deleted labor photos, pregnancy searches, and documented evidence of a months-long concealment. Her own words to investigators placed her conscious and aware when her son moved and made a sound. The grand jury heard all four levels of criminal homicide. They landed on manslaughter.Hidden Killers covers the full timeline, the phone evidence, the affidavit details, and what the people who knew Snelling long before this say about who she really is.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
