Prophet, Priest, and King, Isaiah 61:1-4; 1 Peter 2:9If you get Jesus right, you get everything else right. If you get Jesus wrong… it doesn't matter what else you get right.Yesterday we reviewed Isaiah 61:1-4 to capture a snippet of how Jesus' life and ministry are described. Since we are the body of Christ, he equips us to fulfill his earthly ministry as a representation of him. So, it is useful for us to pause occasionally and consider how God has made us and for what purpose in the body. The passage in Isaiah can be summarized as three facets of Jesus' ministry: Prophet (v. 1), Priest (vv. 2-3), and King (v. 4). Jesus perfectly fulfills all three in one. We each serve as members of His body, and we typically favor one of the three. Like a diamond, we are crafted and chiseled in specific ways that God's light might reflect from within us.Why is this important? To know what we carry so we will faithfully bring it to the others and the world. Also to help us appreciate the body of Christ (i.e., empowering each other's uniqueness). The Prophet: Brings God's truth to people; disrupts and brings hope; provokes repentance and ponders the heart. The temptation of the flesh is to communicate truth without grace; be critical of those with a different gift set; exaggerate truth for personal gain. The Priest Brings people to God's truth; comforts and invites the forgiven to celebrate; Ps. 34:18. The temptation of the flesh is to value feelings and emotions over truth; being afraid to tell the truth. The King: Brings God's rule to people; brings wisdom and protection; order and flow; expert in pragmatics. The temptation of the flesh is to micromanage; lack grace when things fall apart; only see what needs to be fixed and not appreciate what's working.

Michael Thompson, SJ Jennings, Jim Chenet, and Gary Barkalow continue the discussion about the Elder Sage Initiative. They reveal the potential woundings that happen in this stage; one of the most notable being retirement. Retirement can lead to a feeling of not being wanted or needed and perhaps even isolation. The men discuss that the glory of God in one’s life is not associated with roles such as work or assignments. They suggest that the Elder Sage stage is an amazing time to experience a greater freedom in exploring one’s calling and the glory of God in one’s life. On the tail-end of a recession, seven years ago, our guest left a successful organization that he helped create. Through his own quiet time and reflection, he realized his season there was over, and that it was time to take his wife’s hand and enter into a new one – this time as the leader and number-one guy. Gary Barkalow, founder of The Noble heart and author to one of the meatiest books I’ve ever read on purpose and calling, It’s your Call, joins us on the show to share his false-starts, lessons learned, and best ideas for success. Path of Development – After two years of initial growth for The Noble Heart, finances became tight as business began to dry up. While he had extensive experience in business and in ministry leadership, as the front-man, he was now in unchartered waters, with only himself and his wife Leigh, manning the oars. Calling it quits (almost) – During one of his lowest moments, he saw a move called Money Ball; Brad Pitt’s character takes on the job of rebuilding the dysfunctional and broke baseball team, the Oakland Athletics. In the movie, the manager realized for his team, what Gary would go on to realize and apply to his organization. (See “AHA moments”) Advice for people going through career transition: “An important question to ask during major career transition: what was this past experience that’s true of me, that I need to bring into this next thing, even if it looks different on the surface.” He also adds. "Just try it, if it doesn’t work, it prepares you for the next thing you are doing.” AHA moments – To be a front-runner and to win, you must learn how to play the game differently.
