Ron, Brian, and Van dive right into surf culture out in California as they tackle the Oakland Athletics system this week and review all of the best their farm system has to offer! This group of prospects might be more 'real' baseball oriented but that's not to say there aren't any fantasy options out of the bunch. You'll hear about their number one prospect, Tyler Soderstrom, and whether he'll stick at catcher, plus plenty of other names including Nick Allen, AJ Puk, Max Muncy (no, not that one), and Daulton Jefferies

Hello Seattle Mariners fans! We are back with an emergency podcast, fresh from the hot where our beloved nautical baseball team has wrangled a big fish. Soon after trading for nondescript (but still a clear upgrade) Adam Frazier the Mariners swooped in to sign reigning AL Cy young winner Mr. Robert Ray to the rotation. It feels like the first of two shoes to drop, even more so after Shannon Drayer indicated a big trade may be on the horizon. A collective sign of relief was let out upon signing Ray, but the team still has holes to patch in the infield and outfield, with names like Bryant, Story and Correa still on the board. And what on earth are the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels doing? We take a look around the AL West and assess the competition. Assorted Musings: Robbie Ray! Bring back James Paxton Comp pick banter What are the Rangers doing? Are the Angels going to be good? The Ray deal vs the Gausman deal Is the opt out a good thing What other moves will the Mariners make? No Seagers in Seattle // Two Seagers In Texas? Learn more about your ad choices. Keep strikes, strikes, make balls, strikes Blocking balls, making plays helps the pitchers mental capacity Catchers need to keep the mentality of the pitcher strong If pitcher is working fast, you need to keep them working fast Pitcher is working slow, slow them up - calling time, calling outs, talking to umpire, giving the pitchers extra seconds to think and take deep breaths bench/role players know their roles to keep the energy up and keep everyone engaged Catchers can call their own game and have that experience Target practice for throwing Blocking competition  Receiving - thumb under technique Use 3 joints to help with framing - shoulder, elbow and wrist Less movement the better, lets make this look as sneaky as possible. Today's word of the day is ‘encore' as in running it back as in trying to hit the jackpot again as in what we tried to do with the Marlins after the 2003 season when we won the World Series. Every front office wants to try and do this at the end of the season: “We've got the group. We're so close to getting it done.” This is what we're seeing this year with a team like the San Francisco Giants. (11:00) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me about the new MLB Hall of Fame ballot. Alex Rodriguez is on the ballot! This person wanted to know if A-Rod will make the Hall of Fame. Well, let's take a look. (22:00) Review: King Richard. (26:45) LeBron James was suspended by the league for his hand to the face of Isaiah Stewart over the weekend. That means LeBron will miss the national TV game against the New York Knicks. (29:10) Baker Mayfield skipped out on a media session after the Browns game. Not great! Especially on a team that has backed Baker against all the talk of dysfunction with his wide receivers. (33:55) The NFL and Congress are still going at it. Let's dig a little deeper into this and explain what's happening. (42:55) The Oakland Athletics are still threatening to move. What did they do now? The team made an offer to buy land in Las Vegas. Season 3 of the Ballpark Digest Podcast begins with a Broadcaster Chat, as Mick Gillispie, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard discuss the 2021 postseason, why Buster Posey is a lock for the Hall of Fame, why the 2021 Winter Meetings are likely to be a disappointment to all, and a preview of 2022 rebrandings and name changes. Some highlights of the discussion:·       The 2021 MLB season ended on a high note, with the Atlanta Braves winning the World Series after a season of adversity and a wonderfully unpredictable postseason. It was also memorable that it came in the midst of a year-long celebration of Braves great Hank Aaron. And, for those budding GMs at home, the Braves' Alex Anthopoulos had a textbook season in player moves, with seemingly every move working. Will the Braves dynasty emerge? MLB does have a lot of parity when it comes to World Series winners over the last 20 years.·       Speaking of dynasties: What will become of the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays? They are both seeking new ballparks, and it helps to have a winning team in both markets. We still don't know where the A's will end up, but we may see some announcements shortly.·       Buster Posey deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.·       The trio update folks on the 2021 Winter Meetings in Orlando. MLB types will be sequestered at the Hilton Bonnet Creek, and we'll be seeing a scaled-down event for MiLB types at the Swan and Dolphin. The Winter Meetings don't really seem to have a purpose, and MLB doesn't seem too eager to provide one—yet another example of MLB not really understanding how MiLB works.·       They look back at how the 2021 MiLB season ended. Six-game homestands worked; two road trips or two homestands in a row did not. It's great MLB is stepping up to pay for player housing, though the devil in the details. One trend noted by all three: burnout in the sport is prevalent.·       PETA blew it with their attack on bullpens. Arm barns is a great terms, but with PETA officials totally lacking a sense of humor or whimsy, the point was lost and the chance to make an impact diminished.·       We're entering the time of year when teams announce rebrandings. Discussed: the transition from Cleveland Indians to Guardians, and the move from Green Bay Booyah to Green Bay Rockers. More are in the works; generally, we're pro-Fish Stick.Mick Gillispie is Voice of the Tennessee Smokies and a spring-training Voice of the Chicago Cubs, while often appearing on Marquee Network broadcasts and podcasts throughout the season. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and the upcoming second edition of The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. He works on literally saving and rescuing young girls, women, and people enslaved to horrific crimes that happen in communities you would never imagine.    Specifically, this is what we cover in today's episode: - Nick's story, how he got into MLB, and how he played for so long. - Reminiscing about his “training days” with his workout group and his favorite parts of those days. - Working alongside former pitcher, and now GM of the Texas Rangers, Chris Young. - What is “IJM”-- seeking to protect people in poverty from violence, abuse, and human trafficking. - How bad is human trafficking? - Nick shares stories on the rescue of these girls and the goal to prosecute the people who are committing these horrific crimes. - The tremendous success stories of many of these girls. - Advice to anyone facing adversity in their life.   My mind was blown in this episode and I thank the IJM and all those who are fighting for the good of mankind, including Nick Hundley. You're going to enjoy this convo and marvel at what an amazing organization the IJM is and the IMPACT they are creating.    Please be sure to share today's episode. It will help the IJM fulfill its mission to rescue millions, protect half a billion and make justice unstoppable. Thank you! And please tag... In this episode we talk about his journey to the MLB, the mindset that he had going into his debut game, and discusses why baseball is bigger than just the players. I truly enjoyed this conversation and hope you do too!

Without having watched a single Major League Baseball game, you probably still know the New York Yankees since they often get mentioned in Hollywood movies. As the wealthiest team, they inject enough money into their team, attracting a lot of fans who want to experience their games and outstanding records. They also use numerous advertising opportunities that attract even more fans to their team. Unlike the New York Yankees, the Oakland Athletics are a much smaller team which had a comparatively small funding for its operation, at less than a third of that of the New York Yankees. It seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle for the Oakland Athletics to win games under such conditions. Yet they were able to pull it off. This seemingly hopeless team won countless games with minimal funds at their disposal, even going on a record-breaking winning streak. This accomplishment rallied the nation behind the Oakland Athletics, and many at that time asked; how in the world did they do it? To answer the question, the author of this book reviewed the team's journey to the top of the league, and eventually discovered their implementation of the “Moneyball Strategy”. The Moneyball Strategy is a concept which uses a comprehensive data analysis to find better value for money in players who are considered untalented or washed-off.

Rickey Henderson was left fielder who played for nine teams from 1979 to 2003, including four separate tenures with his original team, the Oakland Athletics. Nicknamed the "Man of Steal", he is widely regarded as baseball's greatest leadoff hitter and baserunner. He holds the major league records for career stolen bases, runs, unintentional walks and leadoff home runs. At the time of his last major league game in 2003, the ten-time American League (AL) All-Star ranked among the sport's top 100 all-time home run hitters and was its all-time leader in walks. In 2009, he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot appearance.Henderson holds the single-season record for stolen bases (130 in 1982) and is the only player in AL history to steal 100 bases in a season, having done so three times. His 1,406 career steals is 50% higher than the previous record of 938 by Lou Brock. Henderson is the all-time stolen base leader for the Oakland Athletics and previously held the New York Yankees' franchise record from 1988 to 2011. He was among the league's top ten base stealers in 21 different seasons.Henderson was named the AL's Most Valuable Player in 1990, and he was the lead-off hitter for two World Series champions: the 1989 Oakland A's and the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays. A 12-time stolen base champion, Henderson led the league in runs five times. His 25-year career elevated Henderson to the top ten in several other categories, including career at-bats, games, and outfield putouts and total chances. His high on-base percentage, power hitting, and stolen base and run totals made him one of the most dynamic players of his era. He was further known for his unquenchable passion for playing baseball and a buoyant, eccentric, and quotable personality that both perplexed and entertained fans. Once asked if he thought Henderson was a future Hall of Famer, statistician Bill James replied, "If you could split him in two, you'd have two Hall of Famers."
