The Role Of Life Long Learning In InfoSec | A Conversation With Heather Ricciuto And Gotham Sharma

By Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin What is “lifelong learning” and how does it impact our cybersecurity profession—and our society? According to Heather Ricciuto, lifelong learning is about continuously learning new things—just as the two words imply. But it's more than that—it's also about being curious and being open to change. “If you want to have a long and successful career, you have to be curious and be willing to take on new challenges and continuously learn new things in order to keep up." — Heather Ricciuto Gotham Sharma adds that the industry is moving quickly; you’ll want to stay on top of new technologies, new tools, new kinds of ideas that are being thrown around the industry—you want to know what's happening. If you're not staying up to date—if you’re not staying abreast of everything—it's very easy to get lost out there. “It’s about constantly adapting—you could blink and you’d be obsolete." — Gotham Sharma So, how do we—and how can we—as a profession, demonstrate that we’re doing our part to both learn and also give back to the community so that others can learn from us? Marco sums it up quite nicely noting that we need to consider always the role of mentors. What doors can be opened for others that want to come in the industry, and what can we all do to help those already in to stay relevant…including ourselves as mentees. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go." — Dr. Seuss Ready to be inspired to continue to learn? Good! Have a listen to take another step toward staying relevant while also learning how to give back to the community in a meaningful way. Welcome to a new episode of the The Academy on ITSPmagazine! Sean Martin and Selena Templeton had the great pleasure of sitting down with Heather Ricciuto, Academic Outreach Leader at IBM Security, at this year’s RSA Conference. In this podcast, we talk about all things educational when it comes to attracting and retaining cybersecurity talent. Heather’s path into cybersecurity was accidental, which makes her a great advocate for other non-traditional paths into this industry. Traditionally, companies like IBM have focused on recruiting from 4-year universities, but how are you going to build a pipeline when you’re recruiting from the same top schools and competing for the same talent? IBM’s “new collar” initiative focuses on skills rather than degrees alone and attracting new talent from non-traditional talent pools (2-year schools, veterans, internships, mentorships, self-trained folks, people who have cybersecurity certifications but not degrees). As Heather says, it’s all about opening the aperture. Listen to this podcast to hear about all the things that Heather and IBM are doing to educate, inform, attract and retain a wide variety of talent to the cybersecurity industry. "Do you know who Tony Stark is? Do you know who Iron Man is? Would you be interested in having a Tony Stark-like experience with your computer?" These are the questions that led IBM Master Inventor Mike Spisak – and his 11 year old son Evan – to begin the development of Havyn, a voice-enabled digital assistant for cybersecurity analysts that uses Watson technology. But Mike’s many professional achievements are not the subject of this podcast. Instead, he and Heather Ricciuto, academic outreach leader at IBM Security, have a spirited conversation about their joint passion for cybersecurity education and share ideas for “hacking” the skills and diversity gaps that exist within the cybersecurity field. To meet more IBM Security team members who are working alongside Mike and Heather to make the world more cyber secure, follow our ongoing “Voices of Security” series on SecurityIntelligence.com: https://ibm.co/2MvwGlu.
