All the boys are on for this one… and it was a horrible afternoon. We got into:
Last week, Washington's coaching staff signed 25 players during the early signing period. In this podcast, Dawgman's Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters go through each of the 12 defensive prospects who signed and where they see each one fitting in once they arrive. A big focus was the versatility of the defensive prospects including top in-state prospect Derek Colman-Brusa who could play almost anywhere along the defensive line next season. He is joined by another top in-state prospect in O'Dea's David Schwerzel who signed late on Wednesday with the Dawgs as well as top out-of-state targets Tufanua Ionatana Umu-Cais and JD Hill and a developmental prospect like Ta'a Malu who is only in his second season of playing football. At linebacker the Huskies added two long, hard-hitting athletes at the position in Ramzak Fruean and Ezaya Tokio, each of whom is over 6'4" tall. In the secondary, much like the defensive line, the Huskies added five players, four of which could project at four different positions in the deep patrol. Elijah Durr, Jeron Jones and Ksani Jiles each look like they are fits at corner. Gavin Day, a hard-hitting safety from the state of Nevada, will be an in-the-box safety while Rahsjon Duncan is a swing player who could play both safety or corner and was called by national pundits/analysts the hardest hitting corner in class. The Bears roll into Lambeau as 6.5-point underdogs with Rome Odunze already ruled out, a crumbling defensive front, and a quarterback who's basically Bryce Young with better legs. In this week's episode, Vance Bedford and Sam Webb discussed Michigan's defensive performance in its 27-9 loss to Ohio State. Bedford criticizes the defense for failing to stop vertical routes, poor alignment, and ineffective blitzing. He also criticizes the offense for putting excessive pressure on the defense, highlighting the importance of scoring touchdowns instead of field goals, noting that field goals gave Ohio State a chance to come back. Bedford then shifts focus back to the defense, emphasizing the need for better fundamentals, communication, and technique in the secondary and linebacker positions moving forward. He suggests that the defense needs to improve its pass rush, in both talent and technique, to compete at a championship level. The Cincinnati Bengals' defense, once dubbed the worst in NFL history for surrendering over 400 yards per game and 32.7 points on average through 11 weeks, has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last three outings. Post-bye week, this young unit—plagued by rookie errors, poor tackling, and a lack of takeaways—has flipped the script, providing a lifeline to a 4-8 team clinging to faint playoff hopes. The turnaround ignited in Week 12 against the New England Patriots, where Cincinnati limited a surging offense to 26 points, their second-lowest yield of the season. Defensive coordinator Al Golden highlighted improved tackling and run defense, crediting middle linebacker Barrett Carter's "line of scrimmage command." Though the Bengals fell 26-20, it marked a stark contrast to prior debacles, like the 80 combined points leaked to the Bears and Jets pre-bye. Thanksgiving's 32-14 rout of the Baltimore Ravens on November 27 epitomized the surge. Facing the AFC's hottest team, the defense forced five turnovers—including three from Lamar Jackson—while sacking him thrice and holding Derrick Henry to 60 rushing yards. They allowed just 346 total yards, converted only 3-of-10 third downs, and notched their first sub-26-point game since Week 1. Rookies Demetrius Knight Jr. and Carter shone: Knight's red-zone interception and Carter's leadership in calls anchored the front seven. As Golden noted, the group is "populating the ball" more aggressively, blending sophisticated blitzes with veteran poise. Head coach Zac Taylor praised the "complete-game" effort, the first of 2025, while quarterback Joe Burrow, returning from injury, credited the "building" momentum. Even safety Geno Stone admitted fewer missed tackles, signaling growing confidence. With edge rusher Trey Hendrickson nearing return, this three-week sample—yielding 14 points per game against Baltimore and better third-down stops—hints at sustainability. For a squad eyeing a Buffalo rematch, it's not just improvement; it's redemption. The Bengals' kids have grown up, turning a liability into a weapon just in time. Highlights: The Browns' 3-9 record mirrors last season's, showing a lack of progress and ranking them among the worst teams since the 2024 season opener. The Browns' special teams unit was labeled a "total embarrassment," having surrendered five punt or kickoff return touchdowns in the last two seasons, the most in the NFL. Terry Pluto blames the coaching staff for the special teams' consistent failures in coverage schemes and player development. A major issue with the special teams is the absence of a player who "captains" the units, as performance hasn't improved even with safety Grant Delpit volunteering. Despite being hired to elevate the special teams, coach Bubba Ventrone's unit has regressed to being "awful," failing to replicate the top-10 success he had in Indianapolis. Following a listener's email, the hosts agreed that with the season lost, the Browns should continue playing rookie QB Shedeur Sanders to fully evaluate his potential. While Sanders has shown progress operating from under center, a major concern is his tendency to hold onto the ball and take sacks, a habit that often carries over from college to the NFL. Terry expresses declining confidence in head coach Kevin Stefanski, whose job security is in question due to the team's stagnant 3-9 record and low-ranked offense. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz: Head coaching candidate?. The two possible futures for the Browns: a leadership change due to a lack of progress, or ownership giving the current regime a two-year window to rebuild. The Cavs' 13-9 start is described as "clunky" and unsettled due to injuries that have forced them to use 12 different starting lineups. There is an ongoing debate about Evan Mobley's inconsistent role, questioning whether he is better suited as an elite all-around defender and rebounder rather than a primary scorer. Donovan Mitchell's heavy workload is a concern, with his minutes climbing over 34 per game, risking burnout before the playoffs. Second-year player Jaylon Tyson is emerging as a leader, earning enough respect from veterans to publicly state the team needed to play harder after a recent loss. The central debate among Guardians fans is whether to accept playoff contention on a small budget or demand the team spend on free-agent hitters to pursue a World Series. Analysis shows the Guardians have the financial flexibility and desperate need to create a "batting factory" to complement their successful "pitching factory." Listener Ed Cohen emails and asks: Why not use MLB's new automated ball-strike system on every pitch? Tennis uses technology to great advantage, he says. Learn more about your ad choices. RUNDOWN Time for a post-Thanksgiving catch-up — from Hotshot's massive Bonnie Lake feast (and industrial-sized leftovers) to Mitch explaining why he avoids other people's stuffing, small talk, and social gatherings altogether. The guys 'roll' into a playful celebration of area code 360, spotlighting surprising celebrity ties: Sam Elliott's Clark College days, Hilary Swank's Bellingham childhood, The Rock's Vancouver roots, and of course Kurt Cobain — whose Aberdeen home, schools, and legacy still anchor the region. Mitch and Hotshot mourn Washington's deflating rivalry loss to Oregon, wondering what's happened to Damon Williams over the last few weeks and whether Jed Fisch's 8–4 season is real progress or just a tiny baby step. They pivot to the Seahawks' 26–0 shutout of a completely overmatched Vikings team led by one-and-done starter Max Broer, raising fresh concerns about Sam Darnold, a sputtering passing game, and what—if anything—you can actually learn from a win like that. Mitch then slips into full "Mr. Playoffs" mode, mapping out the Rams–Seahawks tiebreaker hell. Brady and Jacson join Mitch to break down Seattle's emphatic 26–0 shutout of Minnesota — the team's first since 2015 — powered by five takeaways, four sacks, and total defensive domination of an undrafted rookie QB. While the win keeps Seattle tied atop the NFC West, all three acknowledge the troubling offensive trend. The crew debates whether this defense — with Ernest Jones ascending, DeMarcus Lawrence wrecking pockets, Reek Woolen surging, and reinforcements like Julian Love near return — is good enough to carry a sputtering offense deep into January. Rick joins Mitch to dissect Washington's season-ending loss to Oregon — highlighting Damon Williams' late-year regression, disorganized reads, and off-timed footwork, while crediting Dante Moore for outplaying him in a game UW needed. They walk through the wild coaching carousel (Lane Kiffin to LSU? Will Ole Miss even let him coach the playoff?) and unravel the tangled playoff math: whether the Ohio State–Indiana loser still deserves a bye, how an Alabama loss would knock them out, and why Texas Tech's "purchased darlings" have a real shot to win it all.
