Jan began his sporting career with a 10-year stint in the German national swim team between 1990 - 2000, whilst simultaneously completing studies at Harvard University with a degree in Economics. He then ventured into the investment banking world, however, his true calling drew him back to the sporting arena to the world of Triathlon. Between 2001 and 2004, Jan went on to achieve four ‘first out of the water' titles at the Ironman Hawaii World Championships and in 2004 Jan set the world record Ironman swim time of 42:17 at Ironman Germany in Frankfurt. Jan continued to compete professionally in the global triathlon circuit until 2007 when he founded Sailfish. The company expanded internationally and continues to set global standards as one of the world's best Triathlon brands, amongst both professionals and amateurs. In 2018, Jan was unsettled with missing the fastest KONA swim time by just 6 seconds in 2003, so he launched a two-year comeback to finally break the Ironman World Championship swim record. At the age of 43, 17 years after his first appearance at the Hawaii Ironman Jan swam a blistering 46:29, of which the record still stands today. Between 2015 and 2019, Jan ran the Triathlon Convention Europe and between 2016 and 2021 Jan managed Patrick Langer 2x Ironman World Triathlon Champion. Dede Griesbauer is an American Triathlete who currently lives and trains in Boulder, CO. In 2011, Dede had a near career-ending crash during IRONMAN Germany. She broke six bones; an elbow, two ribs, her pelvis in two places, and her hip. She was told she'd never run again. However, Dede had other plans and was back on the race course, competing in 2012. Dede is a three-time top ten finisher at the IRONMAN World Championships in KONA. In 2020, she won Ultraman Florida, setting a world record for the Ultraman distance of 22 hours, 48 minutes, and 31 seconds. Even today, at 52 years young, Dede's passion for what she does, perseverance, and laser focus help her compete against (and beat!) people 10 - 20+ years younger than her. Listen to Dede's story to learn more about the motivations, learnings, and routines that make her one of the most consistent performers triathlon has ever seen.
Lisa Bentley is a legend of Iron-distance racing. 11 time champion, she won Ironman Australia 5 times, Canada three times, New Zealand twice and Ironman Germany, as well as finishing in the top 10 in Kona six times, including a third place finish in 2006. All of this is remarkable enough before you consider that Lisa was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a disease of the lungs causing repeated chest infections and requiring her to be on antibiotics for up to three months every year. Her story is one of not just hard work and dedication, but also of a positive mental attitude that rivals anything you’ll ever have heard. Lisa is now a team captain for the Internationals in the Collins Cup, selecting the athletes that will race head to head when the race takes place in 2021.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. This week's SWATcast guest is another of Simon’s triathlon buddies from the 80’s. You may not have heard of him but Simon Blackburn has been involved in some pretty significant triathlon history in the UK, and recently he has embarked on another ground breaking venture which is sure to have an impact on the future delivery of triathlon events in Great Britain and beyond. Simon and Simon start off by reminiscing about the good old days of triathlon and some of the great names that they both know. Shortly after that the conversation turns to other matters including: Being one of the original founders of High 5 nutrition Introducing Ironman to the UK market with the first Ironman UK in 2001 Sponsoring Luc van Lierde, the course record holder in Kona for many years Qualifying for Kona at Roth (the original Ironman Germany) back in the early 90’s Triathlon racing on the A1 Commentating from a steamed up car in the middle of a soggy field Simon's quest to banish the goody bag and single use plastic from races To find out more about Simon Blackburn and his latest triathlon project visit RacePerk.com.
