Regan Hollioake, Professional Triathlete from Australia, talks to us about her journey from competitive open water swimming to triathlon. Regan discovered cycling as a strength after a standout performance at Busselton where she set the fastest ever age group female time. Living in a small town three hours north of Melbourne, she often trained alone but has more recently benefited from joining a training squad in Ballarat. We discuss her progression in running, from a 3:15 marathon to a 3:03 at IRONMAN Australia, despite not having a formal running background, and how she maintains a mindful approach to training volume to avoid injuries. Regan's debut as a professional athlete was at IRONMAN New Zealand, where she raced against notable competitors like Chelsea Sodaro and Els Visser. Despite initial doubts, she excelled and secured a fourth-place finish, validating her decision to go pro. We discuss her challenging lead-up to IRONMAN Australia, where she competed and won the race despite suffering a broken rib from an accident in the pool and an ulcerated cornea. Most recently Regan raced and won the full distance at Challenge Gunsan in Korea. Her next stop? Lake Placid and then the IRONMAN World Champs in Nice. She'll definitely be one to watch out for. Tim Reed also raced and finished 5th on the day. My favourite part of the conversation is the two boys discussing the inner workings between 2 competing pro triathletes out on course, what is said, how much they work together, what they're both thinking at the same time in races, etc.

Jo Lum is a Sydney-based triathlete and busy mum who has been a regular on the triathlon scene in Sydney for years. Jo and her friend Katie were originally training for Ironman Australia in 2020. That race was postponed 4 times - twice in 2020 and then twice in 2021 - before it was eventually cancelled. So Jo and Katie decided not to let their fitness go to waste and designed and completed a DIY Ironman distance event in May 2021. They swam 3.8km in a pool, then hopped on their bikes and rode 180km primarily along bike paths, before heading to their respective homes to finish their ‘race' by running 42km around their neighbourhoods. There were even race bibs, finisher's t-shirts and (to their surprise) finishers medals! I've shared this story multiple times over the last few months because it's a powerful example of two important things: focusing on what you can control and asking for help (and being willing to accept it when offered). This week on The Ball and All Podcast we welcome 2016 World 70.3 Triathlon Champion Tim Reed to the shed. For best part of 10 years now, Reedy has been at the forefront of Ironman Triathlon - racking up over 30 wins at various distances including what he describes as his greatest loss and personal victory at Ironman Australia back in 2016 - this story alone is sure to pull on the heart strings. Reedy is a class act on and off the course and what makes his story even more remarkable is that he has achieved what he has on the back of a 'dodgy heart', helping wife Monika raise 3 young boys and juggle a side gig as a teacher. Like his training partner and former guest Tim Van Berkel, Reedy is an understated legend of his sport and it was great to don the 'Budgy Smugglers' and go behind the scenes of a sport we know very little about. Also on the podcast this week, we pull the nuggets of gold from our incredible chat with former NRL player and Ballina Junior James Aubusson and we go 'Around the Grounds' and dissect all of the last sporting news both locally and abroad. “Attitude is more important than fact” might seem like one of those weary and overused motivational slogans. But Lisa Bentley lives it every day. Lisa is an 11-time Ironman triathlon champion, including 5 straight victories at Ironman Australia. She also has cystic fibrosis - a genetic lung disease that results in chronic infections with limited lung capacity. Lisa was diagnosed in 1989 at the age of 20, when the average life expectancy for those with cystic fibrosis in Canada, was also 20. The facts would suggest Lisa was never meant to excel at endurance sports. She’s the first to admit she wasn’t the most talented athlete around, especially given her limited lung capacity. But it was Lisa’s approach to the mental and emotional side of sport — her attitude — that set her apart. We dive into her story and the tools she used to build that mental fitness in this conversation. For anyone that is involved in triathlon you will know the name as she has been racing as a full time professional since 2014. In that time she has won four time Ironman Championship events including Ironman Australia for three years running (2017, 2018, 2019), Ironman NZ (2018), and also ETU European Long Distance Champion (2018). Laura is a fantastic athlete but also a great advocate for the sport of triathlon so we look forward to sharing her story and learning about what it takes to win at the highest level. 49:26 Lee Butts We profile Lee Butts, one of our awesome Team CP athletes. Lisa Bentley is a legend of Iron-distance racing. 11 time champion, she won Ironman Australia 5 times, Canada three times, New Zealand twice and Ironman Germany, as well as finishing in the top 10 in Kona six times, including a third place finish in 2006. All of this is remarkable enough before you consider that Lisa was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a disease of the lungs causing repeated chest infections and requiring her to be on antibiotics for up to three months every year. Her story is one of not just hard work and dedication, but also of a positive mental attitude that rivals anything you’ll ever have heard. Lisa is now a team captain for the Internationals in the Collins Cup, selecting the athletes that will race head to head when the race takes place in 2021.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Chris McCormack is one of the true legends of triathlon. A 2 x Kona winner, 6 x Ironman Australia, 2 x ITU World Champion, and 4 x winner at Challenge Roth, and one of the few men to go sub 8 hours in his day. Since retiring from competition, Chris has introduced SuperLeague Tri to the World - innovative race formats, making fast, furious and exciting sport for both the fans and the athletes. In an honest and open interview, he talks about how he battled constant self doubt and negative self image during his racing years, projecting an aggressive prize-fighter persona to deflect attention from worries about his abilities, insecurities and body weight worries. He talks about how a plans for a super-race against Lance Armstrong went sour, and how that in part led to the idea for SuperLeague Tri. He talks about his favourite athletes racing at the moment, and who he thinks will be in the spotlight in 2020. Today we talk to 2016 World 70.3 Triathlon Champion Tim Reed. Tim is most likely Australia's best 70.3 athlete and has made serious inroads into the Ironman distance, having won Ironman Australia and setting the run course record, and in the same year he won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship on the Sunshine Coast.Tim speaks about that banner year in 2016 and the mental adjustment taken which provided a breakthrough in his performances. We go in depth to what the nature of mental resilience means to him, and what Tim does to keep himself grounded whilst juggling the demands of a full time professional career and the role of a family man.Tim has great clarity around his situation and articulates it very well, and I hope you enjoy the interview and can take something from it. Obviously it's working for Tim as he is still setting course records and winning globally.Grants Website-https://www.inconvenientminds.com.au/Support the show
Trevor Hendy AM is a household name. A former Ironman Australia and professional lifesaver, Trevor Hendy AM, is now a life coach, mentor, author and wholistic personal trainer. Trevor's journey from lifesaver to sought after motivational speaker is an interesting one - he has won six Australian Open Ironman titles, is a four-time winner of the Uncle Toby's Super Series and an Australian champion kayak paddler. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2000 for services to the community and surf lifesaving. Trevor acknowledges that fame came at a price early in his career and is now able to reflect on how that made him a better man today.
Jason competed as a pro triathlete on the world stage for over 25 years and during that time completed over 85 Ironman distance triathlons. The man they call Shorto quickly became known as one of the toughest and more resilient triathletes on the circuit. A fascinating listen. Enjoy

This week The Voice of ironman, Mike Reilly, returns to the show to talk about his new book, Finding My Voice. Mike has been the announcer at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii for almost 40 years. His iconic greeting, "You Are An Ironman", has welcomed over 350,000 finishers across the line at more than 180 ironman races worldwide. Now, Mike has decided to put pen to paper and share some of his favourite stories from the last 40 years. When you read this book be prepared to laugh, cry, be amazed and inspired. As you can imagine we covered a lot of ground including: How Ironman competitors are Reilly’s 2nd family, and what it’s like to have your family show up at every race Ironman, and why it’s not about what you did but who you became When the normally quiet and introverted Ironman World Champion gave Mike’s 7 year old son Andy his sweaty, smelly race shoes that he wore when winning Ironman Australia a few days before MIke’s walk-on music "Baba O’Riley” by The Who, and the bet that got out of hand “That" moment when you ask your best mate to stand in on the mic while you take a comfort break Sarah Reinertson, Scott Rigsby, and the inspiration of the para-athletes Why triathlon and Ironman in particular is a metaphor for life and the way you live your life To find out more about Mike Reilly and to purchase his book, Finding My Voice please go to mikereilly.net o find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. In this episode, I answer a question on what Ironman in Australia is best for you.
“Attitude is more important than fact” might seem like one of those weary and overused motivational slogans. But Lisa Bentley lives it every day. A member of the Triathlon Canada Hall of Fame, Lisa is an 11 time Ironman triathlon champion, including 5 straight victories at Ironman Australia (2002 - 2006). But it was Lisa’s approach to the mental and emotional side of sport -- and her attitude -- that set her apart. We dive into her story and the tools she used to build that mental fitness in this conversation. Hi guys ... not ironman specific, but a good initiative in the US - and they're starting with triathlons (think the guys who set it up seem to be triathletes mainly so they're starting there). Press release (see bottom of this email) was reported on Xtri two weeks ago. The Council for Responsible Sport is setting up a set of standards for races to be stamped as environmentally responsible. Great news, as to my knowledge most races DON'T do this kind of thing yet, certainly not formally. Would be good to see a few of the IM distance races looking at this kind of thing.
