This week we're joined by Peter Connolly, who achieved a lifelong goal when he completed IRONMAN UK this year. This episode will really help anyone who suffers from swim anxiety, as Pete talks about the strategies he developed with Coach Chris to help move him from someone who was too anxious to even get into the swimming pool at the start of the year, to someone who confidently completed the swim in open water at Ironman UK, despite the difficult weather conditions on the day making the swim extremely difficult. Oh, and Pete qualified for the IRONMAN World Champs in Nice as a result! * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Team Oxygenaddict Like what you heard in this interview? British triathlete Ben Goodfellow took up triathlon in 2017, since then he has gone from strength to strength in the sport. In 2022 he had an incredible year of success, winning IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire outright, he was the overall age group winner at IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea before being crowned the Mens 25-29 Age Group World Champion at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Utah last October. Stepping up to full distance racing at IRONMAN UK in Bolton last year he finished in 4th place on debut at the distance. This year he moves from age group athlete into the professional ranks aiming to debut as a professional athlete at IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire in June. He will continue to work fulltime as an engineer for the foreseeable future whilst he also pursues his passion for sport. Prior to racing across the IRONMAN events in the UK last year, Ben had racked up a series of super results in recent years. In 2021 he was the British Standard Distance Duathlon Champion, Helvellyn Triathlon Winner and Welsh Middle Distance Champion, his success coming on the back of his commitment and dedication to being the best athlete he can possibly be. Although he was sporty as a child, as he moved through his teens he left sport behind in favour of time in the virtual world and in his own words became addicted to gaming. Enjoying and embracing his gaming a little too much, it was in his final year of university that he ditched the virtual world for reality and has risen steadily in the sport of triathlon. Coached by Nathan Forde as part of Team NFT, Ben's star continues to rise and I expect we will see a lot more success as Ben navigates through the world of professional sport. Watch this space!

In episode 36, we have a great chat with Tom Rigby and Dan McParland. The 2 North West athletes are close friends, training partners and both had Stellar years in 2022. Dan lead Ironman UK overall until mile 14 in the marathon and finished his year winning Ironman Florida. Tom won 70.3 Ireland at a canter and then Ironman Wales. The question of the podcast... In 2023, there's 400m to go to the Ironman UK finish line and you're shoulder to shoulder, 1st and 2nd overall... what's the conversation you have?
We talk about goals, failing it and nailing it, with two very ordinary busy working mums, Sophie Gasson and Katy O'Connor. Sophie was on the podcast in 2021 after attempting to swim the channel. While Katy is a 3 time long-distance triathlon finisher. She took up triathlon in her 50s, after she was hooked in following an opportunity to volunteer at Ironman UK. She's also had brain surgery twice and is passionate about living life with no regrets. Katy wasn't a swimmer, didn't have a bike and has spent the last ten years progressing through the distances but admits she often needs something scary to make her work hard! You'll hear: 06:00 Interview with Sophie Gasson - channel swimmer at 54 31:00 Katy explains the seed that was planted after she experienced her first Ironman in 2011, working as a volunteer at Ironman UK. She went on to set herself a challenge for her 50th birthday, of a big swim, a big ride and a big run, despite not being able to swim front crawl or ride a bike. 36:00 She talks about her plan to start out with sprints, before stepping up to Olympic distance, then middle distance and then a full distance and her first Ironman at Bolton in 2018. "Ironman UK was the one that got me hooked and it gives me goosebumps thinking about it." And I always said if I finish Bolton, then I'm going to do Wales." 42:00 Katy says she entered Ironman Wales 2022 for her 60th birthday and was meticulous about her training and meeting the cut-off times. 43:00 Ironmind Sports Psychology programme "Ironmind." Katy talks about how beneficial this was to her. 45:00 Katy on the swim at Ironman Wales and how horrendous conditions at Long Course Weekend two months prior gave her the confidence to know she would be okay at Ironman Wales. 47:30 Learning to swim... Katy hadn't done front crawl before she was 50 and she talks through the process of having to learn to swim as an adult. 50:00 So interesting and so many people can relate 'I felt you had to be really fast to join a tri club.' 55:30 Why Katy did achieve her 'why' and why it was so important to her. "when you do achieve something like that it gives you the confidence to think 'what's next?' 59:30 The importance of saying YES to things to Katy. "I've had brain surgery twice." It was a case of "If the tumour is not removed, it will eventually kill you." After the second one when the operation had been a success it was like a new start. And every time when I have the choice of doing something I think 'what are you waiting for?' Do you ever think that the people most qualified to perform particular tasks are those who have an intimate knowledge of that task? For example, an ex-footballer or rugby player might be best suited for a job as a referee. How about sports photography? If you've participated in a sport and know exactly what the performers are going through, do you think that might help you to frame even better pictures? Maybe that's why today's podcast guest Jack Schofield has risen to the top of the triathlon photography world so quickly. Not only does Jack take some brilliant photos, he's also a pretty decent triathlete himself. Earlier this year he finished second overall at the age group only Ironman UK and just a few days before we chatted he had completed this year's Ironman World Championships in Kona. In fact, Jack was splitting his time between preparing for the race and taking photos for Ruth Astle on her Thursday Kona race day. Dividing your energies like this is challenging and we get into this topic, as well as: The conversion from rowing to triathlon How studying architecture helps him to frame good photographs How understanding exactly what triathletes go through helps him frame good photos Training with Patrick Lange and other elite triathletes Jack has a rant about triathletes who use but don't pay for finish-line photos To find out more about Jack he hangs out mostly on Instagram: www.Instagram.com/two26_photography/ www.Instagram.com/jackyscho/ In our conversation, Jack talked about his first photography book which he also (unsurprisingly) recommends as his favourite book
Professional triathlete and coach Reece Barclay is on the podcast this week. You'll probably also know him for being one part of Team Charles Barclay, he is of course husband to Lucy Charles-Barclay. This is a really fascinating interview with Reece, about his own triathlon goals, what it was like for him when Lucy was injured in 2022, working with Dan Lorang and loads more. You'll hear: 07:30 How Covid disrupted Reece's Ironman Wales plans 11:30 Reece looks back at Ironman UK in 2014 'we entered it as a challenge and as a selling point for our personal training business. Fast forward 3 years on from there and we were selling up the PT business and going into triathlon full time. 13:00 Reece talks about his sporty background as a child, with karate, squash and swimming. "I thrived off competing, but I was useless at squash." 18:30 Reece talks about how the disappointment of not making it to the Olympics brought him and Lucy Charles Barclay together. 20:00 Reece talks about Lucy's personality and her ability to deal with a sadistic amount of pain. 'You almost feel worried for her she can push so hard.' 22:00 If Reece has ever felt pressure to succeed in triathlon, because of Lucy's success. 25:00 How Reece juggled coaching learning with his own ambitions 26:30 How coach Dan Lorang came to be a part of 'Team Charles Barclay' and how Reece finds things a bit easier on a day to day basis. "I still feel the same pressure when she races." 31:30 Role reversal, how Reece got on at Roth, with Lucy on supporting duties. 35:30 What makes Dan Lorang and his approach different to perhaps another coach or a standard plan. 40:00 What was 2022 and Lucy's injury like for Reece to deal with? 45:00 Some of the things Reece has taken from 2022, with Reece's own heart issues and Lucy's injury and what 'rock bottom' was like. 53:00 Reece talks about his own goals within triathlon. 56:00 Reece on red wine :) Find out more about this week's guest Reece Barclay https://www.instagram.com/reecebarclaytri/ (Instagram) Team Charles Barclay https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6PP69DCmBwMCPf9RSSTNTg (Youtube) Podcast Sponsors Form Swim and Presca Sportswear are sponsoring the podcast on a bi-weekly basis so you can hear the best interviews in triathlon each week. https://www.formswim.com/pages/insidetrishow (FORM Swim - $15 off smart swimming goggles). https://www.prescasportswear.com/ (Presca Sportswear) - sustainable sportswear. Tom was the third fastest age group athlete at IRONMAN UK last year and in 2019 he was fifth fastest overall and second in his age group at IRONMAN UK earning him a hard-earned and coveted slot for the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona. Taking up triathlon seven years ago or so, he raced IRONMAN UK in 2015, as a 'one and done' but he is far from done! He did take a bit of a break from racing triathlon to focus on cycling in recent years, where he has also had significant success, however, he missed the fun, camaraderie and friendship of training and racing with his friends and teammates at Tri Preston and so has returned to triathlon. With consistency in training some great training partners and steely determination Tom has enjoyed super fast times and significant improvements in performance in recent years. 2022 was a big year for Tom, despite a late start to his triathlon season, it has been his most successful to date, breaking the tape at IRONMAN 70.3 Cork was the icing on the cake. In this episode, we get some insight into Tom's approach to training and racing whilst working a forty-hour-a-week job as well as balancing family life with his wife Kerry and two children Evelyn and Sophie – who join us on the show for a couple of minutes. Together Tom and Kerry are embracing triathlon as a way of life for their family, Tom may be the athlete standing at the start line of a race but Kerry is a key part of Tom's success and together they enjoy and endure the sport of triathlon and long-distance racing as a team.

Kat Matthews Rises to the SUB8 Challenge Sydney, Australia – 13th April, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ –European champion Kat Matthews has signed on to the Pho3nix Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift. The third-fastest British female long-distance triathlete and national time trial cycling champion is the newest contender for the audacious attempt to race the full distance of triathlon in under eight hours. After Ironman 70.3 world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay was ruled out of Sub8 due to a hip bone fracture, Matthews was quick to rise to the occasion and take on the challenge of swimming 3.8 kilometers, cycling 180 kilometers, and running 42 kilometers faster than anyone ever before. Though the attempt will be aided by a team of pacemakers and cutting-edge technology and logistics, in the end it will still be a triumph of physiological preparedness and mental acuity for any athlete to go under the mark. “I'm a relative newbie to the sport and the iron distance is certainly one where experience is of high benefit. Most would assume I would not be a contender and that achieving this would be impossible,” Matthews admits. “However, as soon as I heard of the attempt, I wanted to be involved. It sparked my interest intellectually as well as physically. I see my sporting endeavours as a case study for constant learning and improvement. I have yet to find a plateau in my physical improvement in any area, and this evolution keeps me right at the edge of passion and motivation for absolute excellence.” As an Army physiotherapist, Matthews pursued a longtime interest in the human body and health helping injured soldiers get back to fighting fitness. It was in that environment she began exploring triathlon, going from grassroots sprints to winning middle distance races outright as an amateur to earn her pro card. With a slew of wins and notable performances in the past three years including winning Ironman Florida to set the third-fastest full distance time set by a British female, topping Ironman UK, and dominating this year's Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote, Matthews has put the world on notice. Now only seven years after she first began doing triathlons, she puts herself on an even steeper trajectory to sporting greatness lining up to race against dual Olympic medallist Nicola Spirig. Matthews says, “Nicola's accolades in the sport over the last 25 years puts her as a legitimate candidate as the sport's Greatest Of All Time across both male and female athletes. To race against Nicola here is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I hope to be a worthy contender.” Pho3nix Foundation board member and MANA Global CEO Chris McCormack says, “Kat is a world-class athlete I've watched with much interest over the past few years. Getting herself and her ‘tribe' of pacemakers together in such a short time frame is no mean feat, but she came ready and prepared. Kat has had a long-term alignment with the Sub8 Project: she was in early discussions with Lucy as part of her team and has also been engaged in a heavy training block with many of the pacemakers over the past six months. This made for a perfect transition into the lead racing role. With Kat's cerebral and disciplined approach to the sport I'm excited to see how she will tackle the puzzle that is Sub8 and the new race strategy she will bring in her pursuit to be the first to Defy the Impossible.” Regarding Charles-Barclay's further role, McCormack clarifies, “Lucy is still very much part of the team and having her still on board within our global commentary team and on the ground on race day brings a new lens to this groundbreaking attempt. Her journey in preparation and the insights she can offer on her fellow athletes racing will take our coverage to the next level. It's something that no one else could possibly have delivered.” To find out more about the Pho3nix Sub7 and Pho3nix Sub8 Project Powered by Zwift, visit the official website at: https://www.sub7sub8.com/ What's New in the 303: Colorado's Statewide Safety Stop is Almost Here! By Brian Weiss, Bike Law Colorado Finally, the much sought after common sense traffic law for bicyclists is coming to Colorado in 2022, likely July 1st. After the Governor Polis signs the law and the Safety Stop becomes effective, anyone who rides a bicycle or scooter on public roads will not have to lose momentum due to stop signs or wait as long at red lights. So what difference will the Colorado Safety Stop make? Soon riders will “legally” not have to completely stop at stop signs when there is no traffic present. Red lights that would not change for a bike rider who followed the law and as a result the rider waited and waited – will be a past memory. People who were pulled over by police and ticketed for what they may have thought was a legal activity on a bicycle, can now breathe a sigh of relief. Jack Todd (Bicycle Colorado) Andy Kerr, Senator Kevin Priola, Piep van Heuven (Bicycle Colorado), Brian Weiss After about seven years of trying, Colorado's House and Senate finally passed the State-wide Safety Stop bill (HB22-1028), which is based on the Idaho Stop Law, in 2022. The bill actually had true bipartisan support this year. In fact, it passed the Colorado House 44-20 and passed the Colorado Senate 25-8. The effective date of this law taking effect will be after the Governor signs it and the required waiting period because the new law is needed for our “immediate safety.” An explanation of the practical changes of the Colorado Safety Stop for a bike rider are as follows: When approaching a stop sign, if it is safe to proceed only after slowing to a reasonable speed of 10 miles per hour or less, yielding the right-of-way to any traffic or pedestrian in or approaching the intersection, and after yielding, then the bike riders can continue through the intersection without stopping; and When approaching an illuminated red traffic control signal or “red light,” the person on a bicycle must first stop completely at the intersection and yield to all other traffic and pedestrians and only when traffic clears and it is safe, may the rider proceed straight or make a right turn through the intersection or, subject to specified conditions, make a left turn onto a one-way street only. It should be noted that the bill evolved into the current version in several steps. This law will not only apply to people who ride bicycles but is now flexible enough to cover current and future forms of transportation called “Low Speed Conveyances” which would include electric scooters, one-wheels, e-bikes, and electric skateboards. Also there were several parts added to the text of the bill. One critical revision is that the new law will only apply to bicyclists age 15 and over. However, for bicyclists, or low speed conveyance riders, under age 15 who are with a parent or legal guardian they can also keep their momentum and benefit from this new law. This is a change from the current law which was basically an opt-in decision by the city or county to make a Safety Stop the rule of that area. As expected, when rules for bike riders changed from town to town there was confusion. When both bike riders and drivers of motor vehicles understand the laws, they are easier to follow and there is less conflict between road users. I say that this law was a long time coming from a personal note, as I have advocated for the Idaho Stop for over 8 years for Bike Law, Team Evergreen Cycling and myself as a person who bikes all over Colorado. While I knew that some mountain towns, like Breckenridge, Aspen, and Summit County, had a successful safety stop local ordinance in place for years before the Colorado Legislature considered changing the Traffic Code to make this a statewide law, I also was aware of the Denver Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee in 2013 which shared a white paper explaining how traffic flows and bicycle commuters would benefit from a safety stop ordinance in Denver. I testified at the Senate Committee hearings for two years, but the bill did not leave the Transportation Committee. However, there was a glimmer of hope in 2018 for passing a version of the Idaho Stop Law. In 2018 there were enough votes in the Colorado Legislature to pass a watered-down model of the bill which allowed the bike-friendly cities and counties to “opt-in” to a regulatory framework to allow bicycles more freedom at intersections, but I saw this as a weak compromise law. Fortunately, it did serve as a step toward the larger objective, and it energized the bicycling community to keep trying. In the meantime, Colorado was bypassed by other states. Arkansas, Delaware, Oregon Washington, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah all passed statewide safety stop laws. Those other states provided data that was helpful in ultimately passing Colorado's safety stop bill. For example, I explained to the Colorado Senate transportation Committee that crashes between bicycle riders and motor vehicles dropped 23% at intersections with stop signs over a 30-month period in Delaware. I find that statistics like this resonate well with both legislators and jurors alike. The lack of relevant statistics from other states may have been a reason that the law passing in Colorado was previously unsuccessful. While working to pass the Colorado Safety Stop, there were a lot of different people involved with varying viewpoints. Of course, Bicycle Colorado was a driving force behind this law as it benefits bicycle riders across the State. Andy Kerr, current Jefferson County Commissioner, former Colorado State Senator, and former Colorado State House of Representatives stewarded this bill for about 8 years and made it his personal mission when he was a Colorado legislator. Note, Andy commuted by bicycle when he was the Colorado State Senator and House Member for my district. After I gave my own testimony about statistics, safety, and legal issues, I was moved by the testimony from fellow cyclists. In particular, I recall Marcus Robinson's testimony who explained that he, as a black man riding an expensive road bicycle, was emotionally devasted after he was pulled over by the police who claimed he failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and the police accused him of stealing the bicycle that he was riding. Marcus explained that no minority should be targeted by law enforcement, and he advocated for equality in cycling. I learned that after the stressful police accusation and racial unrest in 2020, Marcus Robinson and Neal Henderson started Ride for Racial Justice, a non-profit in Denver which advocates for Diversity, Education, Leadership & Community: https://www.rideforracialjustice.org/our-vision. This Safety Stop bill will unify bike laws across Colorado, and make the roads safer for people of color at the same time. In Finlay's first episode as co-host, he's donning his sports scientist hat to discuss the high fat low carb approach to fuelling endurance sports - a topic he's studied and practiced over his years racing Ironman triathlon as well as coaching athletes. This episode sifts through some of the myths, misinformation and grey areas around fuelling for endurance sports, favouring a balanced, logical approach: the appropriate food to fuel the appropriate session. Finlay also talks about what got him into running - from golfing injuries, to spectating Ironman UK as a teenager, and going on to study sports science and run his first marathon. Training talk begins at: 28:43.If there's a particular topic you'd like us to explore, or you just want to get in touch, email: thepod@run4it.com.

With a string of successes to his name already including; the winner of the Bearman Xtreme Long Distance race in 2017 and the Lakesman in 2019 he set the fastest long distance triathlon time ever recorded in the United Kingdom on the day in a winning time of 8:21. In the same year he finished 7th at Ironman Barcelona in a time of 8:05. He was recently 2nd at IRONMAN UK behind Joe Skipper which saw him jump up the PTO rankings to 26th on the global list. Moving to France with his family as a young child he grew up embedded and engrossed in triathlon as his parents set up Sancture Sportifs Triathlon Training Camps in the South of France. Surrounded by sport, meeting a wide range of athletes from different cultures and backgrounds his passion for triathlon was fuelled and the fire ignited to pursue a life in sport where anything is possible. Sam has a drive, focus and commitment to the sport that many of us can be inspired by, he is still very young in age but he is very much dedicated to his craft. He may have big goals and dreams but I fully expect that those goals and dreams will become a reality and Sam Laidlow is one to watch for the future!

In the eighteenth episode of season three of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to Professional Triathlete Lucy Charles-Barclay.A former competitive swimmer, Great Britain's Lucy Charles-Barclay made the switch to Ironman triathlons and is now a regular contender for top titles. In 2014, Lucy Charles-Barclay decided to enter a triathlon after a 10 year competitive swimming career that included an Olympic Trials final for Great Britain. Never mind that she had no triathlon experience and had to actually learn how to ride a bike, Lucy threw herself in at the deep end of the toughest triathlon discipline of all – Ironman – and amazed by finishing Ironman UK.Her talent shone instantly in Ironman and it took Lucy less than a year to become an a double world champion in the Female 18–24 age group, winning both the Ironman and 70.3 titles in 2015.After turning pro in 2016, again it took her just one year to achieve her first professional victory. She won the 2017 edition of Ironman Lanzarote by demolishing the field in a course record time. Now the British phenomenon has achieved several podium finishes and it seems just a matter of time before she claims her first full Ironman World Championship title.Lucy only learned to ride a bike in 2014 and almost ended up doing her first Ironman on a mountain bike! It's a brilliant insight and conversation with Annie and Louise into her life as professional triathlete and how she has overcome many challenges over the last ten years. “The little things that I could sort of blow off and not pay attention to when I was 35, I absolutely have to pay attention to now. So that's I think the only thing for me that's changed in the last 15 years is I can't screw around with the small stuff anymore. It's all big stuff.” - Dede GriesbauerToday's guest is Dede Griesbauer, one of the most remarkable triathletes competing today. After speaking with Dede, it's very clear that her longevity in the triathlon is fueled by her passion for the sport and the lifestyle that comes with it. It was so refreshing to speak about her many years of competing at such a high level and her recent world record in the Ultraman Florida event in 2020. This was a conversation where we got to explore the important role things like passion, curiosity and setting the right expectations play when it comes to optimizing athletic performance. The big takeaway, however, may be how those three things contribute significantly to the joy you experience on a daily basis throughout your journey to your own personal greatness. Without a doubt, there's a lot of lessons to gain from this conversation and we can't wait to have you listen and be inspired by the insights Dede is so open to sharing with others.Timestamped Show Notes(3:42) The similarities between Boulder and Stanford…(6:36) The power of a team, a community, and a supportive environment…(8:18) Goal-setting through the years…(11:40) A bucket list of events and discovering new challenges…(18:19) Thoughts on curiosity in the sport… “When I got home, I was told I'd never run again. In today's show we chat with Joe Skipper, multiple Ironman podium finisher, Ironman UK winner and 7th place Hawaii Ironman finisher. Joe is basing himself over here in sunny Perth with the Swim Smooth Perth Squad for the southern hemisphere summer after discovering Swim Smooth online some 2-3 years ago and using the Guru to help him dial up a 50 minute Kona swim split this year to couple up with a 4h15m bike and 2h54m run. Joe is an avid technology user when it comes to training and tells us how he's used this to help develop an innate ability to pace himself exceptionally well in races. Currently, there's a bit of a debate raging online on the advantages vs disadvantages of using technology when it comes to knowing your body, but Joe's insight together with both Paul's and Adam's experience should help you fathom out what is best for you. This is a no-holds barred interview with Joe - one of the most open athletes out there who discusses openly the nitty gritty of his training and racing preparation. If you're an avid Training Peaks / technology user yourself, you'll love some of the in-depth discussions on these points. You can find out more about Joe at http://www.joeskipper.co.uk and he can be followed on Strava also where he posts all his workout information. It's been really exciting for the squad having Joe train here alongside all the members, so we really hope that you also enjoy this candid interview where you get to know much more about one of the real prospects for a future Hawaii Ironman podium. This week's SWATcast guest is another of Simon’s triathlon buddies from the 80’s. You may not have heard of him but Simon Blackburn has been involved in some pretty significant triathlon history in the UK, and recently he has embarked on another ground breaking venture which is sure to have an impact on the future delivery of triathlon events in Great Britain and beyond. Simon and Simon start off by reminiscing about the good old days of triathlon and some of the great names that they both know. Shortly after that the conversation turns to other matters including: Being one of the original founders of High 5 nutrition Introducing Ironman to the UK market with the first Ironman UK in 2001 Sponsoring Luc van Lierde, the course record holder in Kona for many years Qualifying for Kona at Roth (the original Ironman Germany) back in the early 90’s Triathlon racing on the A1 Commentating from a steamed up car in the middle of a soggy field Simon's quest to banish the goody bag and single use plastic from races To find out more about Simon Blackburn and his latest triathlon project visit RacePerk.com. Before he could become an Ironman Steve Ashton needed to lose some weight and stop smoking. He shares his story with me. At the beginning it isn't a story about training for Ironman merely a need to live a healthier life. Steve underwent Gastric Sleeve surgery and lost 154 pounds (or in his words 11 stone). But then 5 years ago his dream to be an Ironman was born when he watched his son complete the race. Bolton is known as a tough course with a hard and technical bike course plus the chance for bad weather but Bolton is Steve's home town and that's where he wanted to race. Steadily, methodically he ticked off the races, sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman and finally Ironman. He followed the Don Fink Be Iron Fit plan and battled injuries along the way. He says he smiled all day and hopes to do it again. Based on how he describes the crowd support at the UK Bolton race it sounds like a good one. Thank you Steve for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. Be sure to visit Amy's website to follow her adventures at www.amysaysso.com

Episode 84 Ironman Talk www.ironmantalk.com This weeks news Results: Ironman Florida. Silverman changes. Badman has operation. This weeks discussionWhy do you do this crazy sport called Ironman? We’re going deep and we want honesty. Maybe your mum didn’t cuddle you enough ;-)If you want to add a comment click here: add comment then open the discussion. Website of the weekGreat youtube clip from Peter Coulson: Click here. Age grouper of the week His name is Tommy Nielsen and he is an outstanding age grouper. I'll mention his results in a minute but first you need some background information on him:He's 34 years old and lives with his girlfriend. They have 3 children. He balances everyday life with the kids, coaches several athletes and put on Denmark's second largest triathlon www.Silkeborgtriathlon.dk He holds a full time job but still finds time to train for Ironman. This is his passion and despite a low training volume he competes at a high level. Leading up to Kona he averaged a about 15 hours a week for 6 consecutive weeks. However, on average over a whole year he normally trains about 10 hours a week. (I don't know how much he trained this year, though) Seen in that light I think his results are incredible. This year he raced in Roth and had a PB in 8.33 and 12th overall. 7 weeks later he did Ironman UK where he was first age grouper and 8th overall in 8.56. He was over 30 minutes faster than the second fastest in his age group. He qualified for Hawaii where he again went on to win his age group only 7 weeks after Ironman UK. His time in Kona was 9.05.He always wanted to win in Kona. That was what kept him returning to Kona 8 times. He kept believing he could win in Kona if only he kept training consistently and return to Kona. His weakest discipline has always been the run and after the bike in Kona he was only 6th in his age group. However, with his best ever run in Kona, a 3.05 marathon, he went on to win 6 minutes ahead of number 2. A truly remarkable performance, especially because he had an entrapped nerve in his behind which prevented his performance on the bike. It just shows that anything is possible if you keep believing. A big inspiration and that's why I think Tommy Nielsen should be age grouper of the week. His web page is www.tommynielsen.com High 5 Correct bogeying technique Turn your head so as not to get yourselfOne finger presses down on non bogeying nostril (double barrel technique is not a good look)If in a bunch be mindful of others around you (do you bogeying at the back)If in a race situation don’t look behind you.
