On paper, the course looks challenging but not daunting.  Yet add in ocean swells and currents, wind and heat on both the bike and run, and being exposed all day to the sun with no shade in sight, well... you get probably the most brutal course on the Ironman circuit. However, 2039 of the 2097 athletes who started the race finished, the highest single day finish rate in all of Ironman World Championship history.  Go women!  We are proud to have witnessed this race in person, so have a listen to our Kona race recap!

Having fun and enjoying what you do = LESS chance of burnout and injury! Perhaps no surprise there, but this was a really good reminder for us.Eva resides in Santa Monica, California and has been in the sport for a handful of years. Now, she has completed over 10 Ironman and Half Ironman distance races! In 2022 she finished 2nd in her age group at Ironman Alaska and also earned her Kona spot, racing Ironman Hawaii in October! There's no denying that Eva is a strong athlete - mentally and physically. We are excited to bring you the third episode of the Couples Who Tri series where we sit down with couples who are both active in the sport of triathlon. Do they train together? Race together? Did triathlon unite them or did it come to be after the fact? And WHAT will a world championship race in 2 different locations look like for competitive triathlon couples?Amy & Seamus Woods live and train in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and race in the 45-49 age group. They are parents to 2 kids, so we spend some time chatting about how they manage busy lives and schedules, and how staying active has been a part of their relationship from the very start.Seamus raced Ironman Kona in 2022 and shares a recap of how he got there and how the day played out for him (SPOILER: his finish time of 9:59:59 might be the best thing ever!).Amy (fellow @iracelikeagirl teammate to Michelle!) most recently raced Florida 70.3 in 2022 after a year of battling injury. With a finish time of 5:20:33, I think it's safe to say she's BACK and more than ready for her 2023 season! Both Amy & Seamus have some great advice for busy athletes and parents, and we appreciated their honesty when it comes to balance and staying true to your own goals and dreams.Follow Amy & Seamus:@amywoodsfitness@rhymes_w_famousSupport the show Follow Mission Kona Podcast hosted by Mike & Michelle Payne: · Instagram missionkonapodcast · Do you know an age group athlete who has a great story to share? One might say she was not an overnight success in the sport - but what Stephanie DOES have is dedication, grit, and undeniable passion which FINALLY led her to earning that coveted Kona spot at Ironman Chattanooga in 2022.Stephanie shares her journey - the ups and downs and the "almosts" - which created the path she was destined to follow. You may find many parallels to your own triathlon journey in her stories. We also enjoyed hearing about the awards ceremony at Ironman Chattanooga where so many women were able to accept Kona spots for 2023. Stephanie shares that the room was full of energy and the women were SO excited. This episode kicks off our new series - Couples Who Tri!As Mission Kona Podcast co-hosts and a couple who does triathlon, Mike & Michelle thought it would be really interesting to hear how other couples navigate the sport together, what training looks like, how they came to the same sport... and SO MUCH MORE.Our first couple, Nicole & David Levenson, recently completed 2022 Ironman California. And when we say completed, we actually mean CRUSHED it! Nicole finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group with a time of 10:00:50 in her second ever ironman distance race! This also secured her a spot to Kona in 2023. David finished 18th in the 35-39 age group with a time of 10:11:47 in his very first Ironman! We enjoyed chatting with Nicole and David about their exposure to the sport, strengths, setbacks, successes, and failures that led them to an incredible race at Ironman California. You'll learn more about the course in CA, the unfortunate cancellation in 2021 due to extreme weather, and what makes it so special to share the love of the sport with your significant other.Fun fact: Nicole is ALSO a sugar cookie decorator like Michelle! In addition, hear how Headsweats is sponsoring the Denver/Boulder leg of Hilary's nationwide book tour for From Couch Potato to Endurance Athlete in February next year. About Headsweats Headsweats Perspiration Technology Headwear® was founded in the winter of 1998 by shoe industry veteran and obsessed cyclist, Alan Romick. Frustrated by the perils of heavy sweat blindness, migrating sunscreen, and odd sunburn pattern on his head through his helmet, he set out to develop headgear that worked. Encouraged by the constant feedback within the local cycling community, he took the best attributes of what was available and improved on them. Starting with one product -- The Cotton Classic -- available at first in just four colors, Alan's products quietly became elite athletes' secret weapon around the world, eventually expanding to over 17 different products available in over 140 different colors and styles. After appearing on a Tour de France rider on the front of the New York Times sports section, that secret weapon became an open secret and soon Headsweats were running in and winning Ironman Kona, The Head of the Charles Regatta, countless marathons, and bike races around the world. With well over a million hats delivered, Headsweats now has more triathlon finishers and podiums than any other headwear company. Today the Headsweats line includes washable, airlight, supremely wicking hats that now dominate the triathlon, rowing, and adventure racing worlds. The success and a spirit of innovation at Headsweats, along with unsurpassed customer service, helped to establish Headsweats as the front-runner in a very competitive cycling category. Alan continues to work relentlessly to bring the most cutting-edge, advanced, and fun headwear products to new markets for construction workers, chefs, police forces, snow-boarders, and marathoners alike. I think we can all agree she got a BOOST of energy when she got ice on the course from none other than Jan Frodeno!Shyanne is truly talented across all 3 disciplines, but also values strength training and mobility in her workout regimen. He then ventured into the investment banking world, however, his true calling drew him back to the sporting arena to the world of Triathlon. "Just because you're older doesn't mean you have to be slower." Some people have obvious superpowers. Others — like professional triathlete Dede Griesbauer — keep their superpowers closer to the chest. Dede recently gave a TEDxBoston talk about her own superpowers: persistence and determination. And in this conversation, she explains how receiving a "Persistence & Determination" award as an 8-year-old at summer camp helped her become the successful athlete she is today. Dede is 51 years old, and has been competing as a professional triathlete for the past 20 years. She started competing at a time when many pros are starting to think about transitioning out of the sport. That's never deterred her, though. Dede doesn't care that her competitors are often half her age. Because she is the one with persistence and determination. And she has the trophy case to show for it: Dede is a three-time Ironman champion, a three-time Top 10 finisher at Ironman Kona, and was the top American finisher in Kona twice. Her current favorite event: the Ultraman. Dede completed her first Ultraman event — a three-day, 320-mile event that includes a 10K swim and 91-mile bike ride on the first day, a 171-mile bike ride the second day, and a double marathon on the third day — in 22 hours, 48 minutes, and 31 seconds, smashing the world record by more than an hour. When she's not on the swim, bike, or run, Dede is a commentator for Ironman. She lives in Boulder, CO, with her husband, dogs, and scooter. Are We Home Yet?
Philosophy Magazine Creator Kolby, on How Much Does it Cost to Travel the World as a Digital Nomad

Are We Home Yet?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2022 39:18

How much does it cost to travel the world as a digital nomad? Kolby, creator of philosophy magazine After Dinner Conversation, for the last two years, he and his wife have been globe-trotting and visiting some of the most beautiful places in the world. They've been to Thailand, New Zealand, Italy, France, Croatia, Spain, Malta, Cypress, and Tanzania (among others), and they tend to change locations every three months or so. Kolby and his wife, Ashley, met many years ago when he was working on his law degree at Arizona State University and she was working on her university degree. They met at a race where she was doing a bicycle race and he was helping out a friend as a timer. They became friends, but didn't date, yet kept in touch via Facebook. Eventually, about 10 years later, in the middle of Ashley training for Ironman Kona, Kolby sent Ashley a message from Iceland asking her out on a date. They've been together ever since. They love traveling and value experiences and travel over money and houses and stuff. They're perfectly fine sleeping out of a tent and a backpack for days.  They've been all over the world and there's nothing they enjoy more than exploring new places together. They're a perfect match. Kolby runs an online literary magazine called After Dinner Conversation. He started it shortly after my wife and I got married, and it has been growing steadily ever since. The magazine went from short stories to anthologies, to a podcast, to a monthly magazine. He also does remote legal work as a lawyer. His wife is an online teacher for a charter school. Teaching online, doing consulting work, today there are many options for those who want to travel the world and make an income online. Overall, the cost of being a digital nomad can vary widely depending on your specific circumstances. Let's delve more into the question, how much does it cost to travel the world? Well, it doesn't have to be as expensive as you might think. You can travel cheaply by staying in hostels, Couchsurfing, and cooking your meals. You can also save money by planning your trip around low-cost destinations and seasons. Of course, how much you spend on travel will also depend on your style and preferences. Maggie Rettelle has been on a quest to run a sub-3 marathon. Having qualified for IronMan Kona twice and run a 3:30 marathon off the bike, Maggie believed she had the strength and grit to get it done. Race experiences and her fire to achieve it shaped her to dive deeper into nutrition, fueling, sleep, mantras, and her mental game. As athletes, we all hope for a perfect training cycle. We root for the best weather and optimal conditions to help us smash our goals. On Saturday 5/21 in Chattanooga, Maggie CRUSHED a sub-5 Half IronMan, running her fastest 1/2 (1:36) off the bike and WON her age group by an astonishing 12 minutes! 7 days later, on 5/28, she laced 'em up at the Bayshore Marathon where she ROCKED a 2:58:02, smashed down the sub-3 door, and made her dream come true. Maggie is a board-certified health & wellness coach and USAT Level 1 certified triathlon coach at TS2 Coaching and is all about community and giving back. So much of our RunChat centers on gratitude. For anyone who has struggled with their nutrition, race day fueling plans, or mindset, there are SO many great takeaways. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
