A delightfully complex theme by Jesse Goldberg, cleverly finessing the rule that the answer to a clue should not appear in the clue. In this episode, Matthew speaks with Jesse Goldberg (@jesseGlab),  Associate Professor and Robert R. Capranica Fellow in the neurobiology and behavior department at Cornell University. They first cover Jesse's perspectives on some basics of neurobiology-- what he identifies as a brain's function and the brain's role in creating predictions and controlling movement. They then discuss the role of dopamine in an animal's learning and discoveries that Jesse's lab has made regarding the role of dopamine in song learning in zebra finches, in particular. Then after the break they discuss Jesse's path from to neurobiology as well as the limitations and promises of the field of neurobiology.A clarifying note to listeners, during our conversation the nervous systems of a marine animal - the sea squirt - becomes relevant. Although discussed as an example, we want to be clear that sea squirts retain some form of nervous system throughout their entire lives (though they digest large parts of their nervous system upon become sessile). For a more detailed look at the sea squirt's transition from mobile to sessile, check out this blog post. This week's Two-Minute Takeaway comes from Andrew Legan (@AndrewLegan), a recently minted PhD from the NBB department at Cornell. Jean & Mike Do The New York Times Crossword

A delicious Sunday crossword, with LOL answers courtesy of Julia Child (as curated and transcribed by today's constructor, Jesse Goldberg). How could you not like such bon mots as 38A, "A party without cake is ________", REALLYJUSTAMEETING, or the rather brazen 65A, "If you're alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. __________?", WHOSGOINGTOKNOW. Jean cruised through the crossword in 54 minutes, only getting hung up in the vicinity of 87A, ________ o'clock (when happy hour begins), BEER, whereas Mike seriously misinterpreted 15A, Even once, EVER, parsing it as "Even, once" and trying (unsuccessfully) to imagine the equivalent in days of yore: EVEA? EVEH? EVEL?? Those minor glitches not withstanding, both Jean & Mike agree that this was a fine Sunday effort, and definitely worth 5 squares on the JAM CR scale.

Happy Pride Month, everyone! In honor of that august occasion, Jesse Goldberg has crafted a puzzle revolving around 34A, Historic inn commemorated during Pride Month, as suggested by this puzzle's border answers, STONEWALL. Revolving is the operative word, as the top and bottom rows, and left and right columns were dedicated to 10, count 'em, 10 theme-related clues, all of which required STONE to be appended to the end of the answer -- 1A, Graveyard sight, HEAD[STONE], 47D, Quaint street material, COBBLE[STONE], etc.Jean found the crossword to be about right for a Wednesday. Mike, meanwhile, flailed about in the bottom-left corner, almost done in by the heteronym-trap that was 39D, Attribute, ASCRIBE. Very sneaky, Jesse!

#21: Jill Campbell -- What is Acroyoga? Joys of Teaching Yoga

This week we are proud to have the opportunity to talk to one of the leading experts of Acroyoga. The most basic definition of this style of yoga is that it is a mixture of acrobatics and yoga. It is the rare “social” yoga in that the poses are generally accomplished with either one or more partners. This week’s guest has spent the last ten years learning and practicing under the watch of Acroyoga creators Jesse Goldberg and Eugene Poku and is now one of the most highly respected Acroyoga instructors in the world. Jill Campbell fell in love with the movement, art, and connection that Acro brings to her life and is on a quest to spread the goodness to as many people as possible. She travels all over the world bringing acroyoga to literally thousands of students and has now spread her influence by teaching the next generation of instructors. Jill is a caring, introspective, boundary pusher who is blazing the trail for Acroyoga practitioners worldwide. As someone who has practiced yoga pretty regularly throughout the last four years but has never participated in an Acroyoga class, I am so grateful for the opportunity to speak with Jill. I truly believe that there is a lot to gain from talking to highly qualified people in any field you are curious about and can honestly say that, as someone who knew nothing of Acroyoga (beyond that it looks really fun), Jill has inspired me to step outside my comfort zone and begin looking for classes around my area. I came at this interview as a complete curious newbie and probably asked some extremely surface level questions. Although this podcast is aimed at all levels of experience with this yoga practice, I believe that it will really be beneficial for all of us who have no clue what to expect from an Acroyoga class. Also, as a 8th grade science teacher, I was fascinated with the similarities seen for all teachers, whether it’s a peaceful yoga class or a public school class with goofy hormonal 8th graders. We really dig into what you can expect from a first time Acro experience, how becoming really passionate about something can change your life, her teaching philosophies and how it influences her teaching style, how the partner and social aspect makes Acro different from other forms of yoga, and a lot more!

Jesse Goldberg , consultant for the Reading Area Water Authority (RAWA) continues a conversation with Tami Shimp from Berks Nature about their clean water education partnership. Jesse says, “the biggest issue we have is to keep excessive nitrates out of the water supply. Nitrogen and phosphates from getting into the lake …. A lot comes from the farming community and from run-off from farms and could lead to substantial water issues” Berks Nature builds individual relationships with landowners to develop Best Management Practices. Some of these include installing cattle crossings over streams, putting up streamside fencing, installing manure storage pits and diverting clean rain water away from farms. Berks Nature makes money and resources available to help farmers develop Best Management Practices keeping nitrates from seeping into Lake Ontelaunee is imperative to keep our water clean and safe to drink.

Jesse Goldberg , consultant for the Reading Area Water Authority (RAWA) talks with Tami Shimp from Berks Nature about the importance of understanding the impact of the watershed. Lake Ontelaunee is the sole source of water for 125,000 customers in Reading. The Lake Ontelaunee Watershed encompasses 200 square miles spreading North into Lehigh County.Between 14 and 15million gallons of water is treated daily before making into our homes. Particles are filtered out and the water is disinfected with chlorine. Berks Nature and RAWA work together to establish preventive measures in the watershed area to keep the water as clean as possible. This means less filtering and chlorine is needed before the water is potable. That translates to healthier water and less expensive water bills.
