In this episode of the Movement Logic Podcast, Laurel explores how we've come to assign moral value to certain movement concepts—like compression, flexion, anterior tilt, and instability—and why that language does more harm than good. She unpacks how terms that are neutral by definition often get rebranded as “bad,” “dangerous,” or “dysfunctional” in movement and rehab spaces.Rather than offering a list of “better” movement cues, Laurel invites listeners to step outside of binary thinking. This episode explores how our wiring, combined with marketing and group identity, fuels a polarizing narrative—a red-X/green-checkmark mentality that pits “functional” against “dysfunctional.”Whether you're a teacher, coach, or curious mover, this episode offers a reminder: biomechanical concepts are just descriptions of what's happening—not value-laden truths. And when we let go of moralizing movement, we open the door to more creativity, exploration, and individualized problem-solving.Sign up for our Bone Density Mini Course: Barbell 101!Follow us on Instagram @movementlogictutorialsResources:The Truth About Good vs Bad Muscles - Results Not Typical Podcast98: Capacities for Longevity Part 3 - Cardio94: Capacities for Longevity Part 2 - Power90: Capacities for Longevity Part 1 - Strength89: Is Dead Butt Syndrome Real?80: Posture Panic Pt. 3 with Author Dr. Beth Linker, PhD79: Make Yoga U Make Sense78: Behemoth Knee Myths76: Posture Panic Part 274: McGill We Go Again73: Posture Panic Pt. 167: Popular Explanations for SI Joint Pain are Wrong, Says Science66: Dismantling Long and Lean Pt. 363: Dismantling Long and Lean Part 262: Make McGill Make Sense58: Alignment Dogma - Shoulders54: Alignment Dogma - Spine48: Alignment Dogma - Pelvis19: Oh, NO! In this episode, Mark explores how Yoga can provide a sense of unity and belonging amidst conflict and division in the world today. He emphasizes that Yoga is not about seeking or trying to get somewhere, but recognizing the wholeness already present. Mark argues that religious seeking and ideas of separation are the root of much conflict, and Yoga helps dissolve this illusion. He shares principles from Krishnamacharya on adapting Yoga to each person's needs, as well as the tantric view of life's inherent unity. The discussion aims to encourage teaching Yoga as an antidote to trauma, tribalism and disconnection. They discuss: - Why Yoga is needed as an antidote to the division and conflict pervading society and the news cycle - Krishnamacharya's emphasis on Yoga as embracing 'what is' rather than seeking some future state - How religious doctrine has been used to create division, but true religion needs Yoga as its practical means - The end of spiritual seeking and ideas of a perfect future state - wholeness is already here - The tantric, non-dual view of life as an interconnected unity - Adapting Yoga to each person's body, age, health and cultural background - Teaching Yoga as a stand against trauma and disconnection in the world Favorite phrases: "The yogas of participation in the given reality." "Your body is in a profound unity with the total cosmos." "Yoga is the practical means by which individuals actualize the great ideals of their culture, of their religion." "Trying to come into union implies the two are separate." "Your body is the extraordinary intelligence that is the cosmos happening as you." The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 374: Teaching Yoga to Busy Parents with Naomi Gottlieb-Miller Description: How can busy parents find time for yoga in the midst of all the things they are juggling? How can yoga teachers make yoga more accessible to parents who are facing time scarcity? Naomi Gottlieb-Miller shares how her yoga practice changed when she became a parent and how she now uses this knowledge to share yoga with other parents. Naomi is a mover, a maker, and a mom of 3 kids. She has been teaching yoga and movement since 2005 and is known for classes that are creative, playful, and strong. Naomi specializes in teaching short classes that pack a punch, making sure you can easily squeeze your daily movement into whatever pockets in your day you happen to have. On her website, Naomi offers classes that are 5 to 30 minutes to ensure busy parents (and anyone else short of time) can incorporate movement into their day, no matter what. She shares how she has found success in her yoga business offering shorter classes, and highlights the importance of removing barriers that keep people from coming to yoga. Shannon and Naomi also discuss how we don't all have the same amount of time, the high expectations we put on ourselves as parents and as yoga teachers, the double standards society sometimes puts on parents, and more. Quotes from this episode: "Whatever I am doing for myself to move is good. It does not have to be 60 minutes or 30 minutes or even 10 minutes. It can be really short. And if that makes my body feel good, that is enough." "Another thing that can be so hard actually, is that if our expectations for our practice are really high, ...we're never going to get anything done." "Why are we putting value judgments on the length of time?" "Your home practice does not need to look like the classes that you teach. Your home practice should look like what you need." "We just need to reframe what we think is necessary for both home practice and what we teach." "Motivation is fickle." "We want to assign so much more power to yoga and to movement because we want things to be miracle fixes." "I don't necessarily think that a 15-minute practice means that you're rushing things."

An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Enjoy!TakeawaysAnnie Carpenter's journey from dance to yoga and the influence of Martha Graham on her practiceThe importance of finding one's truth and balance in yoga practiceAnnie's development of Smart Flow Yoga and the principles behind itAnnie's role as a teacher's teacher and her experience teaching on Glow Glow Yoga offers a variety of teachers and practices that are both entertaining and beneficial.Teaching yoga via Zoom has its challenges, but it also allows for a more global community.Traveling for yoga teacher trainings can be both rewarding and guilt-inducing due to carbon emissions.Tapping into energy and using inquiry are important aspects of teaching yoga.Somatic movement and meditation can enhance the yoga practice and bring about self-discovery.Yoga philosophy, such as the Yuga Sutras, offers insights into time, space, and the human experience. There is a need for more accessible yoga classes that cater to beginners and focus on functional movement.Birdwatching is a passion of Anne's that connects her with nature and brings her joy. How Sarah differentiates between low back pain and SIJ pain with her patients. What joint incongruency is and what therapists can and cannot know about joints through palpation. What amount of force is required to dislocate the SIJ. What SIJ form and force closure are, and how they are used to explain SIJ pain. In today's episode I share 3 things I wish I knew a decade ago when it came to teaching a beginner (or any student). You know I think every beginner student is extremely important because there are a lot of yoga teacher training programs that do not get this covered because most of them focus on teaching a student who already has some basic yoga knowledge. Because teaching a beginner requires a nuanced approach and can be challenging. But also very rewarding. It comes down to the caliber of the teacher and the student. So in today's episode, I'm going to share with you three things that I wish I knew when I was teaching beginners that took me a decade to figure out. They are things that I have stuck to time and time again and have definitely been game-changers. Take note that none of them are about poses. In fact, they're what I commonly refer to as invisible yoga when it comes to teaching yoga.Episode Highlights:Focus on how they will learn instead of how you will teachTeach the practice more, not just the poseStop queuing, start communicatingI hope you enjoy this episode and I hope to see you on November 7th in the Teaching Yoga to Beginners Course.Teaching Yoga To Beginners CourseJoin our mailing listFind all the resources mentioned in this episodeConnect with us on Instagram
As the owner of Aham Yoga Studio for 10 years, I have honestly been testing, trying, and failing many times and coming up with a blueprint that now we put on repeat that helps us to move the students in a way where they relate to yoga, they feel successful, and they come back to continue investing in themselves and in their journey with yoga. So I have taken these 10 years of my work and have condensed and packed it into a 30-hour online Teaching Yoga To Beginners Course that is built specifically for you. While there are many aspects to teaching beginners—which we'll explore in-depth in the Teaching Yoga to Beginners course—in today's episode, I want to focus on discussing the yoga sequencing principles for beginners. Yoga sequencing principles largely being asana-oriented. I'm giving you three, out of nine, proven yoga sequencing principles that I have used for beginner's asana classes for a decade successfully.Episode Highlights:Sequencing principle #1: Lay the roadmapSequencing principle #2: Start and end positions matterWhat positions to avoidSequencing principle #3: Know your what-if momentsThe training starts on November 7th, 2023, and enrollments open on October 15th, 2023. It's completely online. It is built for yoga teachers who want to get better teaching, especially a beginner. How you learn matters to me so I've done my best to make it as effective as possible. On October 16th, I'm hosting an information session at 8:30 AM Pacific Time to give you a preview of the content and walk you through the content library where you can also ask your questions.I hope to see you on November 7th in the Teaching Yoga to Beginners Course.
