Apologies for this month's episode being late. Unfortunately we have a sick kitty that we've been taking care of, but that didn't stop us from finishing Ronnie's April pick, which was The Seep, by Chana Porter. This novel follows the story of a trans woman named Trina who is going through a bit of a crisis after an alien species known as The Seep takes over Earth. The Seep in many ways makes things better. People are more empathetic, people no longer deal with illness, and people can do pretty much anything they can imagine. However, after Trina's wife leaves her to become a baby again, Trina is forced to reckon with a world she doesn't understand, and still, somehow find beauty in it. Next month's book was chosen by Ian and is The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa. A dream-like Orwellian, science fiction novel influenced highly by Kafka!
The prospects that life might exist elsewhere in the universe made headlines last week when it was announced that observations of the exoplanet K2-18b by the James Webb space telescope had revealed the chemical fingerprints of two compounds that, on Earth, are only known to be produced by life. The idea of panspermia, where seeds of life from other worlds may have hitched a ride on asteroids like Bennu and crashed into Earth, may be the key to how we were created, or that perhaps we are the alien life we are looking for. Now, this eco-conscious entrepreneur has a hotline to Deborah Meaden and Trinny Woodall that Laura is using to help her build an empire.
Fatelessness is a novel by Imre Kertész which won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002. Ian chose this novel out of familial interest as his father is from Budapest, but he also naturally is inclined to be interested in World War 2 literature. The novel is semi-autobiographical and tells the story of György, a young boy who is swept up and taken to Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and survives. It explores how people can become faceless, even during major historical events, and how one cannot separate themselves from the past, even when it is something horrendous. Next month's pick is Ronnie's and she chose: The Seep, by Chana Porter which is set in a utopian world after an alien race invades the Earth!

In this five-part mini-series, Ann is talking to five artists who were selected to be included in an exhibition called 5X5, that was part of Print Austin's winter festival this year in 2024. The juror of the show is Mysczka Lewis, who is a curator at Tandem Press. Next up is Teresa Cole, an artist and printmaker from New Orleans. She has taught at Tulane University for nearly thirty years. Teresa's interest in the humanness of pattern has been a throughline in her work and she incorporates different cultures' methods of patternmaking and storytelling in beautiful installations. In their conversation, they talk about orizome (a Japanese method of folding and dyeing paper), commissioning printed fabric for saris in India, printing on aluminum mesh, and Tulane's tuition-free master's program. This episode is all about Sleep! Before 2020, before diabetes issues entered my life, I had always gotten by on between 4 and 6 hours sleep a night. Eight hours of sleep seemed excessive but 4-6 hours was doable if I had naps on the weekend. It was usual for me to return from the gym on Saturday or Sunday, have a protein shake or some other high-protein meal and then have a nap. The nap could last between 1 and 3 hours. If I went for a long bike ride in the afternoon, there would be no nap.Somewhere in this, a sleep deficit would accumulate. Looking back, I must have had a sleep deficit of varying levels for several years depending on the activities I was involved in, and the level of stress those activities created. However, being well rested is about more than just how many hours you sleep. As a result, the terms sleep deficiency or sleep insufficiency are more frequently used to describe factors that reduce the quantity and/or quality of sleep and keep a person from waking up refreshed. For example, a person who sleeps for a total of eight hours but with many awakenings that fragment their sleep may have insufficient sleep even though their sleep duration technically meets the recommended amount. (Eric Suni and Alex Dimitriu, "Sleep Deprivation: Understanding the Hidden Consequences," (2024).)Sleep loss can lead to higher risks of serious health problems, including Type 2 Diabetes.Research has shown that sleep deprivation and insulin resistance may be linked.Insulin is one of the main Hormones in the Human Body, there are 64 in total. Seep insufficiency affects all hormones, but being a diabetic, I am interested in the effect on the bodies ability to manage blood sugar and sleep disorders. There is more information in the book where I cover:Sleep Deficit - meaning and consequencesBlood Sugar Levels and SleepHow Diabates technology can improve sleepComplicationsHow much sleep do we need?In the next Episode, we look at Stress. My book, Prevent & Revise Naturally Type 2 Diabetes has been updated. When accusations of murder surround an individual, often the inclination is to look at other aspects of their life for patterns or evidence of duplicity or recklessness. This seems to be exactly the case with Kouri Richins, who, even before murder accusations surfaced, was involved in a very different kind of controversy: a lawsuit regarding a home sale. As Tony Brueski, the host of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, illuminated, there have been recent developments concerning Richins' life as a home flipper. "We're now hearing more people coming out of the woodwork who didn't have anything to do with Kouri and the murder accusations or that part of her life, but her life as a home flipper and not such a good one," Brueski notes. The issue at hand is a lawsuit filed against Richins six months prior to the murder accusations. The plaintiffs claim near financial devastation after purchasing a house from Richins, citing hazardous mold levels and resulting medical problems. The lawsuit alleges that Richins, "recklessly and without regard for the truth... misrepresented important facts about the properties." Such assertions seem to be consistent with other characterizations of Richins. As the podcast host commented, "it's kind of par for the course from what we know about Cori and her ability to lie and just move on from people." Shavaun Scott, the psychotherapist and author on the podcast, concurred, highlighting that "reckless and without regard for the truth" indeed nails the situation. Scott further elaborated, noting the dangerous aspects of Richins' personality. "We're talking about a person who's fairly high on the psychopathy checklist here," Scott stated, "She's not operating from a place that most of us have this internal thing that we call a conscience." Scott's insights indicate a chilling side of Richins - someone who seemingly sees life as a series of roles, whether it's as a business person, a mother, or a wife. But these roles are merely facades, behind which lies a more troubling and potentially dangerous nature. The true query becomes: if these murder accusations hadn't come to light, what could have been next in Richins' unpredictable trajectory? Yet, as intriguing and vital as these revelations about Richins' business practices might be, there remains a crucial legal question. Will these issues find their way into the murder trial as character evidence? Brueski poses the question, considering how critical lying is to the murder trial's foundation. While Scott acknowledges that she isn't an attorney, she speculates, based on other trials, that such evidence might not make it into the courtroom. However, if a psychological evaluation were ever conducted on Richins, this evidence could certainly influence her diagnosis. The situation bears a resemblance to the Alex Murdaugh trial, where unintentional revelations shifted the trial's dynamics. Such cases remind us that the line between personal and professional, between one aspect of life and another, can be perilously thin. As we consider Kouri Richins' tale, we're left with a question as haunting as the murder accusations themselves: In a world of facades, how many others live among us, hiding behind the roles they play? Have you ever had so many things going wrong in your life at the same time that it made you feel like there was nothing left to be grateful for? Well, I'm sure you're not alone. We've all been there at one time or another, which is why it's so important to learn how to start building a gratitude mindset. What's a gratitude mindset? It is a state of mind that allows you to focus on being thankful for what you have instead of dwelling on what's missing. It's about focusing on the many things that are going right instead of what is going wrong. In this episode, you'll learn some strategies for building a gratitude mindset that can help you to navigate difficult situations and take control of negative thinking patterns so that you can reach your goals more quickly, lower your stress levels, and improve your overall well-being. Please take a listen. Here are some of those recommendations:Focus on what you can be grateful for today.Remember the grass is NOT always greener on the other side. Use a journal app or a notebook to make physical notes each day of things that happen throughout your day that you're grateful for; they'll provide a frame of reference for those times when things seem to be out of whack. And while you're at it, don't forget to grab your FREE Affirmation eCards to shift your mindset, raise your self-esteem and boost your self-confidence. Choose one or two that resonate with you, and make a habit of repeating them several times throughout the day, especially when you wake up in the morning, and at night before you go to bed. As you use them, observe the effect they have on you: Do they make you feel more loving toward yourself and more confident? Do they increase your belief in your abilities? Do they make it easier for you to take life in stride? Try to be aware of how your mind and body react to your practice of repeating affirmations. What is sleep chronotype? You get the recommended 8 hours of sleep, but you still feel exhausted during certain parts of the day? Seep experts say that it all depends on your chronotype. Dr. Michael Breus, an expert in the science of sleep, did some research by observing a group of his patients. At the end of his study, he was able to divide them into 4 sleeping types: bears, lions, wolves, and dolphins. He also found that fatigue and difficulty getting up in the morning are simply consequences of not following the daily schedule that's best for your so-called chronotype! My guest this week is Laura Harnett, founder of the B corp certified business The Seep Company who are replacing plastic household essentials like sponges & cloths to make them well-branded, effective, compostable & genuinely sustainable. Circularity is at the heart of Seep where they design everything with the end-of-life of the product in mind & they're on a mission to stop 1 billion plastic cleaning tools from going to landfill by 2030. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Seep was one of the silver linings to come out of it.Laura says she wants her kids and her kids' kids not to hate our generation for making bad decisions. This is huge and it starts with giving everyone to have access to better products and services that have the planet front and centre in their design and to live in a country that places the planet at the forefront of their decisions like waste management and travel infrastructure. This feels so massive to her but she says she has to believe that every little step counts.Thank you so much Laura for making it easier for us to make small conscious changes in our homes so we are part of the solution and not part of the pollution. This week on Cracked Spines, it's time to dig into Cyrus' special interests: Ted Lasso and fungus. Mostly fungus. I'd say 90 percent fungus. Cyrus explains their fascination with the organisms that are like if plants had meat and their major gripe with the current state of fungal works out there. Sarah does not wish to join the fungal hivemind but did like some of the books this week. Works mentioned: What Moves the Dead by T. KingfisherMexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Spores by Joshua Barkman"Lena" from Valuable Humans in Transit and Other Stories by qntmResident Evil 7 and 8 The Seep by Chana Porter. (Hi, Sarah here. I thought I said this during the episode and I never did and it's so important to mention: The Seep has a lot of tendrils in the ideas of fungus but is not specifically about fungus. It's technically about aliens, but it's also about most of the ideas with a fungal hivemind and I wanted to discuss it in that context, but failed to mention it's only metaphorically fungus. okay)
From sumptuous feasts to the standard stew, food plays an important role in flavoring a lot of speculative fiction. But how do the people living in your invented world think about their food? What's their relationship to eating, mealtime, and their cultural delicacies? Guest Chana Porter joins us to discuss food culture and all the wonderful things it can communicate! In this episode, we consider elements of scarcity and abundance: How does a relationship to food change if it's always available versus if it's harder to come by? If you could take a pill to sustain your basic caloric needs, would you do that instead of eating? We also explore the intersection of food and status. Are the people who make food possible -- agricultural workers, cooks, wait staff -- honored in your society? Or do they get forgotten? Is there a sliding scale of food respectability? And what does how people eat, when they eat, with whom they eat as communicate status? [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Chana Porter is a novelist, playwright, teacher, MacDowell fellow, and cofounder of The Octavia Project, a STEM and writing program for girls and trans and nonbinary youth that uses speculative fiction to envision greater possibilities for our world. Her debut novel The Seep was an ABA Indie Next Pick, Open Letters Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Book of 2020, a 2021 Lambda Literary Award Finalist, and a Times (UK) Best Sci-fi Book of 2021. As a playwright, her work has been produced and developed at New Georges, Playwrights Horizons, Cherry Lane, Dixon Place, Target Margin, and many more. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Zman Yisrael editor Biranit Goren and health reporter Renee Ghert-Zand join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on this episode marking Yom Hashoah, Israel's National Holocaust Remembrance Day. Even as President Isaac Herzog called for the Israeli people to put aside their differences over the judicial overhaul last night during the official ceremony marking Yom Hashoah at Yad Vashem, in Tel Aviv MK Boaz Bismuth of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party was forced to leave a ceremony at a synagogue after participants heckled him and threatened violence. Why does this worry Goren ahead of next weeks Memorial Day ceremonies? In the year since 2022's Yom Hashoah, the Tracing Services at Magen David Adom — the Israeli branch of the International Red Cross — has received 150 requests for help in locating relatives and renewing family ties. Over the years, it has aided in the reunion of hundreds of relatives, including six siblings. How does it go about this work eight decades following World War II? Israel's Labor party suffered a crushing blow in the November elections and now the four-seat party seems to be in disarray. This week we heard that it's dropped out of the judicial overhaul negotiation talks at the President's Residence and yesterday we learned that its few MKs are forcing leader Merav Michaeli to get their approval for her decisions. What's happening here? Finally, we hear about a European grassroots effort in which several young leaders are taking the initiative and organizing coexistence clean-up projects for the thousands of Stolpersteine or stumbling blocks that are embedded in sidewalks in European towns and cities. Discussed articles include: Israel grinds to a halt as siren wails to commemorate 6 million Holocaust victims As Israel remembers Holocaust, Herzog says commemoration must be ‘above all dispute' Likud MK shouted down by anti-coalition hecklers at Holocaust Remembrance Day event Magen David Adom aids Shoah survivors seeking lost relatives Labor MKs seek to replace leader Michaeli, claim party's future depends on it Citing ‘deals in the dark,' Labor party quits judicial overhaul talks with president In grassroots effort, young Europeans clean ‘stumbling stones' to gleam like beacons Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Episode 57 is a little rough mainly because Mikey is at half voice and struggled to complete this recording. Alas we pulled through and we definitely have some rad shit for everybody including a handful of legendary album anniversaries, some new live music announced featuring a string of shows from THE MISFITS. Plus in our usual fashion we have new music this time from killer bands including crossover thrashers PARALYSIS, Rome's tech death extremists HIDEOUS DIVINITY, the crust d-beat of sounds of NEGATIVE PRAYER, the metallic hardcore sounds of SLOW PULSE and the gnarliest band to be featured on MOTB to date Maines disgusting, anxiety ridden, gore ridden SEEP! Apologies in advance for this episode dragging a little bit but we plan on having both our voices back in full annoying form next week! Thanks for listening

In the far-off future, Fift is a Staid-gendered youth–working towards logic and thoughtfulness–just trying to figure out zir life in the bustling, but rigid social system of Fullbelly. And as if mastering zir three bodies and making zir twelve parents proud weren't enough to handle, Fift's growing relationship with Shria, an at-times emotional and passionate Vail-gendered bioengineer, is a controversy waiting to happen. When Fift and Shria wind up at the center of a scandalous art spectacle that sparks off a multilayered Unraveling of society, Fift is torn between zir attraction to Shria and the safety of zir family, between staying true to zir feelings and social compliance . . . all while zir personal crises suddenly take on global significance. What's a young Staid to do when the whole world is watching? In his intricate and thoughtful debut novel, The Unraveling, Benjamin Rosenbaum brings warmth, heart, and humor to this story of growing up in the distant future, interrogates exactly who a utopia is for, and how social structures only change when everyone has a voice. Like Chana Porter's The Seep and Monica Byrne's The Actual Star, Benjamin Rosenbaum's The Unraveling is the latest in a line of science fiction that challenges gender, society, and culture, while showcasing an inclusive, expansive, and creative vision of what the future can be. Join us for this conversation between author Rosenbaum and Ted Chiang, moderated by Halley Perry, recorded live on our Crowdcast channel on Thursday, July 26. _______________________________________________ Produced by Nat Freeman, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski.
