DEATS with Deanna: Discussions around Food & Entrepreneurship
Ever wondered what it really takes to pivot from a high-pressure career into building your own online business? In this episode of Deets with Deanna, Deanna sits down with Whitney Di Bona — lawyer turned social media strategist, mom of two, and founder of The Branded Professional. Whitney shares her journey from corporate law and representing women in landmark cases against cosmetic companies to realizing she wanted more freedom, impact, and joy in her work. After building a strong online presence, Whitney made the bold leap into entrepreneurship, helping lawyers, doctors, and other professionals grow their brands and visibility through social media. Tune in to hear: Whitney's unconventional path into law and what it was like working high-stakes cases involving cancer and asbestos exposure. The moment she realized she wanted out of the legal grind and how motherhood shaped her decision. How she used Instagram to pivot her career and land her first social media clients. What it really takes to grow on social media (hint: it's not just posting three times and waiting). Why professionals like lawyers and doctors must embrace social media if they want visibility and opportunities today. Whitney's honest perspective on pivoting, building a personal brand, and not needing to have it all figured out from day one. As we head into the busy recruiting season, you may be asking yourself, “What is the current state of international school hiring?” Whether you're a seasoned veteran of international education or starting to build your foundational knowledge, this episode is for you. We're excited to welcome Diane Jacoutot, Managing Director and founder of Edvectus, a leading international recruiting company, to answer pressing questions that go deeper than the usual approaches to recruiting. Diane shares what has changed — a great deal — and what remains constant in the ever-shifting landscape of international recruitment. After a career in computer development at IBM, Diane got her start in recruitment bringing international teachers to US state schools, and has founded two international school recruitment companies, including Edvectus. She believes in ethical, transparent recruitment and founded Edvectus to solve the biggest problem she encountered: that teachers don't know what they don't know about teaching overseas. Our guiding questions were: “What is the state of international recruiting? How does your company, Edvectus, support both educators and schools, especially with hiring for diversity?”Some topics covered include:What has changed in recruiting and what hasn't General recruiting strategies that Diane shares with her educator and school-leader clientsSpecialized recruiting pathways tailored to British and Irish, US and Canadian, New Zealand and Australian educators, as well as by subject and levelHow both schools and candidates can best align with the recruitment calendar to maximize successThe growing trend: Increasing diversity and inclusivity in recruitment effortsClimbing the "ladder" of international schoolsResources mentioned: Diane's guest blog post on how the pandemic changed recruitingEdvectus - Bespoke International RecruitmentExpatistan - Cost of Living ComparisonsNumbeo - Cost of Living ComparisonsProfiling Schools, Cities and Countries Blog PostDiane's Contact Information:EdvectusLinkedInCategories: Recruiting | School Life Episode recorded on September 2, 2025. This was a delightfully intriguing and decidedly crunchy Thursday crossword, penned by Colin Ernst and adroitly edited by Will Shortz. Just like the answer to 29D, "Too ___" (2024 #1 Hozier hit), this was a SWEET Wednesday crossword, and we're not just saying that because Jared Cappel took the time to introduce us to a magnificent book and movie (17A, Acclaimed 2004 science fiction work by David Mitchell made into a 2012 film, CLOUDATLAS). It's a great time of the golfing year, the Scottish Open this week, and The Open Championship next week. And the Evian is on this week as well, Nick and Mark discuss the course (which they both dislike) and ask does anyone actually like the course? We chat about Links Golf in the UK. Nick and Mark love the UK's links courses, particularly the smaller ones that are lesser known, they discuss what they like about them, one of the things is what they call the 'honest bounce' you get on UK Links courses. Mark recommends that you have some smaller UK Links courses on your bucket list.Nick talks about why he had two putters when he played The Open Championship, and how the sound of the crowds in the UK are different to anywhere.Nick talks about 'zone days' and how he and his caddy adjusted how they worked together when he was 'in the zone'.We discuss The Open Championship's 'Last Chance Qualifier' at Royal Birkdale in 2026. A fantastic idea.Nick is excited as the winner of the John Deere Classic in Illinois, Brian Campbell, was the shortest hitter in the field.Aussie golfer Jeff Guan, after a dreadful accident on the golf course, is planning for his comeback event in Darwin. We discuss the challenges he'll be dealing with, but obviously wish him all the best as he takes this next step. Our mates at Golfies have a fun comp starting on July 10 for The Open Championship. Use the codeword Bryson, get 50% off, and if Bryson wins The Open - you get a full refund! And you are still in with a red hot shot to win the 25 grand Thailand trip if you win 8 matches. Deets here (Bryson comp starts on the 11th).Update on the Top100 list, one of the honchos at the list has agreed to come on Talk Birdie To Me next week to discuss the list, and how they reached the decisions they did.Top 5 from Mark, inspired by Jeff Guan, the Top 5 comebacks from injury in golf. Nick has the PING globals and there has been plenty of action to run through - including a ripping performance from Nicks mate, tour pro Austin Truslow who was on the pod a couple of weeks ago. And we have a new entry into Nicks Top 5 womens swings, which is fast becoming a Top 20, which comes from kiwi tour pro Amelia Garvey.Lots of feedback, three key themes this week: the hardest first hole in golf, and Mark asked for wolfpacker suggestions on the best holes for 'first tee banter and heckling', one of the suggestions for hardest first hole was also where Mark got his first ace! Feedback also on the discussion about whether a male scratch golfer would beat an LPGA Tour Pro, and plenty of comments on young Jasper from last week - if you haven't seen his swing, he is a 9-year old single handicapper, watch him here. And a great masterclass, which is less masterclass and more recommendation this week, from Nick on 7-Woods.We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. It took just one teensy-weensy act to shift this crossword from nigh-well impossible to fun and eminently doable. Unfortunately, that act was to figure out the theme. The doctor -- Dr. Michael Schlossberg, to be precise -- was in fine form today, taking a sentimental stroll through the history books. Jean made short work of today's puzzle, deftly drawing upon her apparently infinitely large collection of pop-culture references. The channeling happening between Spirit Baby and myself preconception. The gender, and whether I got my gender prediction right. The name that kept coming to me for WEEKS. My experience of manifesting this and the hope/disappointment cycle. I have been BURSTING to tell you about this, and now I can. Its been a wild and LONG ride to get here, and while I know we aren't out of the woods yet, we are allowing ourselves to fully bask and surrender to the excitement and awe of it all. I hope you enjoy the episode and if you have an Qs let me know! COME HANG ON INSTA Book Breakthrough Breathwork Sessions

Even a casual glance at today's grid will reveal that something's up - seven vertical colored lines that, unsurprisingly, play a huge role in today's theme. The cost of that theme was complexity, but both cohosts agreed that it was worth the effort, as the payoff was huge. Today's crossword seemed a little crunchier than usual to at least one of our cohosts (hint: their initial is 'M'), due to a confluence of problematic clues in the southwest corner of the grid. Fortunately, thanks to their belief that all good Danish film directors are called LARS, said cohost was able to complete the crossword successfully. This was a fun Sunday crossword by John Kugelman, even if 9 out of 10 cardiologists would recommend you eschew most of the foods in the grid. We've seen John's name in the marquee before, had a notion that good things were about to happen, and were not disappointed. Every themed answer made us smile if not lol, and the rest of the grid was filled with crisply-clued answers. This is Jim Burch's seventh NYTimes crossword. He seems to have taken up residence on the tougher side of the week, with all of his crosswords appearing on Thursday (2), Friday (4) or Saturday (1). This was on the easier side of the spectrum, but still a challenge: as always, YMMV depending on what's in your wheelhouse.Deets inside, as well as the resolution of the Great BELLLAP mystery!Show note imagery: Federal land in NEVADA (shown here in pink), takes up 84% of the state by area!We love feedback! Some sort of major sporting event was taking place today, but both cohosts (working independently, as is their wont) still found time to tackle this excellent crossword, and while each fumbled a few times along the way, they both eventually got to the "happy-music" zone, and performed the traditional "we finished the crossword" dance of celebration. This was a clever Monday crossword from a clever constructor, Alexander Liebeskind, who seems to excel at Mondays. Both cohosts found today's puzzle a bit crunchier (tougher) than usual, but the entertainment value was higher than usual, so it's a wash.
