Storm Technology survey reveals 27% of IT leaders concerned about ability to detect deepfake attacks

Storm Technology, a Littlefish company, has announced survey findings which reveal that 27% of IT leaders are concerned about their ability to detect deepfake attacks over the next 12 months. This concern was felt by more respondents in larger enterprises (33%) than SMBs (23%). The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 200 IT decision-makers and leaders across Ireland and the UK (100 in each market) - found that the biggest concerns around AI and security over the next year are data breaches (34%), data protection (33%), and increased risk of adversarial or cyber-attacks (31%). Meanwhile, a quarter (25%) consider shadow AI (use of unsanctioned or unpermitted tools) among their biggest concerns. This is not necessarily surprising given that half of respondents (50%) know that people in their organisation are using such tools and some 55% admitted to using unsanctioned or unpermitted tools themselves. Forty-two per cent of IT leaders also opined that company data is not safe for input into these platforms. Perhaps exacerbating this issue, just 60% of companies have been specific about which AI tools are sanctioned or permitted. More broadly, over a fifth (21%) of IT leaders do not have a high degree of trust in AI tools and almost a third (32%) of companies do not have a strategy in place to address any AI risks that arise. The research showed that 79% of IT leaders in Ireland and the UK agree their organisation needs to focus more on the regulation of AI tools and 28% do not believe their governance around AI tools is adequate. This rose to more than a third (35%) among Irish respondents. When it comes to AI and data, 24% of IT leaders do not think their business data is ready for AI, with a similar proportion (23%) of the opinion that that their data governance policies are not robust enough to support secure AI adoption. This could explain why 78% believe a data readiness project is required to ensure successful AI adoption in their company. Sean Tickle, Cyber Services Director, Littlefish, said: "AI is rapidly reshaping the enterprise landscape, but the speed of adoption is outpacing the maturity of governance. When nearly a third of organisations lack a strategy to manage AI risk, and over half of IT leaders admit to using unsanctioned tools, it's clear that shadow AI isn't just a user issue - it's a leadership one. "Deepfake threats, data governance gaps, and a lack of trust in AI platforms are converging into a perfect storm. To stay secure and competitive, businesses must invest in visibility, policy clarity, and data readiness - because without those, AI becomes a liability, not a differentiator." See more stories here. Episode 545: Using the Human Eye to Detect Early Alzheimer's and Infection-Induced Brain Changes – Dr. Sean Miller (Yale)

Tick Boot Camp

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2025 11:19

Overview This special episode of the Tick Boot Camp Podcast was recorded live at the 2nd Annual Alzheimer's Pathobiome Initiative (AlzPI) and PCOM Symposium in collaboration with Pathobiome Perspectives. Hosted by Ali Moresco in partnership with Nikki Schultek, Executive Director of AlzPI, the conversation brings the Tick Boot Camp mission of exploring infection-associated chronic illness (IACI)—including Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections—to the global Alzheimer's and neuroimmunology research community. Tick Boot Camp co-founders Matt Sabatello and Rich Johannesen partnered with Ali and Nikki to highlight leading scientists connecting infection, immune dysfunction, and cognitive decline. This episode features Dr. Sean Miller, a neuroscientist and co-investigator in the Logan Lab with a primary appointment at Yale School of Medicine, who is developing ways to non-invasively detect Alzheimer's-like pathology through the eye. Guest Sean Miller, PhD Co-Investigator, Logan Lab / Yale School of Medicine Dr. Sean Miller completed pre-doctoral work at Harvard Medical School, earned his PhD from Johns Hopkins University, and completed post-doctoral training at Stanford University. His research focuses on neurodegeneration, neuroglia, and early diagnostic strategies for Alzheimer's and related diseases. At the AlzPI & PCOM Symposium, Dr. Miller presented evidence showing that SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection can accelerate Alzheimer's-like pathology and that these changes can be detected non-invasively through retinal imaging. His findings suggest that amyloid-beta, a protein long associated with Alzheimer's disease, may also serve as part of the brain's antimicrobial defense system—trapping pathogens like a mesh or biofilm, but leading to damaging plaque buildup when overproduced. Key Discussion Points Dr. Miller describes how the COVID-19 virus can act as an infectious trigger for neuroinflammation and amyloid buildup, how the eye provides a unique window into the brain, and why early detection is essential to preventing neuron death. He shares how his lab's AI-enhanced retinal imaging research at Yale Eye Center is identifying amyloid and tau deposits in patients with long COVID-related brain fog—opening the possibility of routine eye exams doubling as early Alzheimer's screening tools. He explains potential therapeutic strategies, such as limiting amyloid production during infection flare-ups and enhancing clearance mechanisms afterward to reduce chronic plaque formation. The conversation also explores his scientific journey—from designing Alzheimer's drugs at Harvard and Johns Hopkins to realizing the need for early disease detection during his postdoc at Stanford—and how the pandemic inspired his focus on infection-induced neurodegeneration. “We believe neurons are exposed to pathogens in the central nervous system and respond by secreting amyloid-beta to trap them. Excessive plaque buildup from repeated or severe infections may be what drives long-term neurodegeneration.” — Dr. Sean Miller Why It Matters Dr. Miller's research connects infectious disease, ophthalmology, and neurology, providing a revolutionary new method to screen for early Alzheimer's-like changes non-invasively through the human eye. His work suggests that infections like COVID-19 may trigger the same protective—but damaging—immune responses implicated in chronic conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and infection-associated cognitive decline. About the Event The interview took place at the 2nd Annual Alzheimer's Pathobiome Initiative (AlzPI) and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Symposium, held on October 3, 2025, at Ohio University in Dublin, Ohio. The event brought together more than 20 global researchers exploring how microbes, the microbiome, and the immune response contribute to Alzheimer's, dementia, PANS/PANDAS, and infection-associated chronic illnesses (IACI). Tick Boot Camp partnered with Ali Moresco and Nikki Schultek to share the voices of researchers advancing the field of infection-associated chronic illness. This episode is part of a multi-part Tick Boot Camp series highlighting how pathobiome and microbiome science are transforming the understanding of Lyme disease, infection, and neurodegeneration. Competition is free and open; it is the Magna Carta of the American economic system, and robbing the government of that benefit is inherently wrongful.”  Public sector procurement faces mounting challenges, not least of which is the threat of collusion and fraud that quietly erodes budgets and public trust. The Department of Justice's Procurement Collusion Strike Force is taking this seriously, with a coordinated and data-driven approach to cracking down on anticompetitive conduct at all levels. In this episode, Philip Ideson speaks with Daniel Glad, Director of the Procurement Collusion Strike Force at the DOJ, who walks listeners through the reality of prosecuting bid rigging and price fixing in public contracts.  Daniel shares compelling stories, actionable red flags, and new tools (like the groundbreaking whistleblower reward program) that empower honest players to speak up. Mita Mallick, Wall Street Journal–bestselling author and workplace strategist, examines how everyday managerial choices determine whether organizations are resilient, humane, and productive. Drawing on her leadership roles in marketing and human resources, as well as her lived experience as a woman of color in corporate America, she reframes common leadership breakdowns as design failures that can be prevented with the right structures. As she emphasizes, “There is power in being quiet.” Used deliberately, silence becomes a tool to pause, observe, and de-escalate rather than react impulsively.   This episode delivers concrete practices senior leaders can apply now: Use silence deliberately. The “power of the pause” creates thinking space, defuses escalation, and strengthens negotiation outcomes. Leaders should model this and teach teams to signal reflection rather than defaulting to instant responses. Manage up with discipline. Mallick recommends structured, written briefings before talent reviews or board conversations so sponsors can “accurately tell your story” without relying on biased memory. Detect leadership drift early. She observes that leaders often falter when “external market stress, personal stress, and organizational pressure all collide.” Each executive should know their stress-trigger behaviors and plan for corrective action. Design role transitions intentionally. Promotion into people leadership requires coaching, clear expectations, and viable technical career paths for high-performing individual contributors. Replace ad hoc tolerance with governance. “We protect harmful leaders because they deliver results,” she warns. Leaders must enforce HR processes consistently rather than granting exceptions that damage culture. Teach rather than micromanage. Explaining rationale, setting standards, and investing in instruction yields lasting capability—“training sticks more than corrections.” Rebuild trust through apology and consistency. A sincere acknowledgment of mistakes paired with steady, visible actions restores credibility faster than one-time gestures. Create high-trust, low-drama operating norms. Clear rules for communication channels, urgency, and information-sharing reduce gossip and anxiety, replacing speculation with facts. For executives responsible for people, operations, or culture, this conversation provides a practical checklist: stop treating leadership problems as individual personality flaws, surface stress signals systematically, and convert empathy into repeatable management routines that protect both performance and retention.

As we look towards SOAPA 2025, how do you see the ongoing debate between consolidating security around a single platform versus a more disaggregated, best-of-breed approach playing out?  What are the key drivers for either strategy in today's complex environments? How can we have both “decoupling” and platformization going at the same time? With all the buzz around Generative AI and Agentic AI, how do you envision these technologies changing the future of the Security Operations Center (and SOAPA of course)?  Where do you see AI really work today in the SOC and what is the proof of that actually happening? What does a realistic "AI SOC" look like in the next few years, and what are the practical implications for security teams? “Integration” is always a hot topic in security - and it has been for decades. Within the context of SOAPA and the adoption of advanced analytics, where do you see the most critical integration challenges today – whether it's vendor-centric ecosystems, strategic partnerships, or the push for open standards? It's evident that it starts to get cooler and school activities resume. Many people take advantage of the start of the calendar to set goals for the new school year. Nature shows us signs: tree leaves change to brown tones and fall; insects seek shelter and build nests; birds migrate to warmer areas. The weather and sunlight also transform. Even the production of fruits and vegetables changes: the earth offers different colors, flavors, and smells, with a more introspective energy. We human beings are in the middle of this inevitable transition that happens every year; in fact, we cannot stop it, we accept it, look at the calendar, and follow that rhythm without questioning it. Now, it is wise for us to adapt to this at levels. Why? To stay in balance. After all, nature always seeks balance, just as our backbone seeks the center to support us. Thus, both nature on a large scale and we humans on a very detailed level are in constant search of balance, physically, mentally, emotionally, and in our spiritual spectrum. To go with the inevitable current of change that nature gives us each year, we can take actions, use tools, and establish our own protocols as daily routines to maintain our balance in this transition. This will be an investment for our immediate and long-term future. Many scientific views affirm, and experience shows, that what we do today reflects in ten years: our habits, our health, our wellbeing. On this Episode, Tzeitel Calle, and I reflect and share information on how we can help and support ourselves to be in balance at all levels: physical, mental, and emotional, because emotions greatly influence our daily lives and decisions. We also want to address the spiritual aspect because we believe we are a whole: mind, body, and spirit, that fundamental triad for the human experience on this planet.Sometimes, the spirit feels like Wi-Fi: invisible but known to be essential, I would say, spiritually speaking, “known to be the essence”. Each person has their perception of spirituality, but it is there, giving meaning and connecting us with a purpose that the mind may not understand. So today, I propose a very practical episode to navigate from heat to cold and its consequences, caring for body, mind, and spirit. Nature is supreme intelligence, and one of its main pillars is finding balance. Our body, being part of this great natural intelligence, is a finely detailed engineering masterpiece, similarly trying to maintain balance among all our systems: up and down, inside and outside, heat and cold, light and shadow, rough and smooth, strong and weak, acid and alkaline... being and not being... This has a name: HOMEOSTASIS. Homeostasis is like the "internal balance" of the body, allowing everything to function well even when outside things change. It is like a superpower that living beings have, to maintain a stable temperature and many other levels to stay alive, which at the end is one of the missions we all have here on this planet. For example, when it is very hot, we sweat to cool down; and when it is cold, we shiver to warm up. This is the product of our wonderful supreme engineering work that is our body. Ideally, each of us, with our circumstances and metrics, can find protocols (routines, tools...) to "return to" or "stay in" balance every day. ABOUT TZEITEL CALLE – Sublima Health. Since she was a kid, Tzeitel has been immersed in Holistic Health, influenced by her stepfather, a homeopathic doctor and nutritionist, and also cultivating an interest in dance and acting. Her professional training began in 2011 with a Higher Technician diploma in Dietetics and Nutrition in Madrid, plus experience in recognized clinics and advanced studies in Coaching and Nutritional Therapy in the UK. She is currently part of the Holistic Nutrition Institute of Madrid, where she is also a tutor, and collaborates giving workshops and consultancies in various centers and events. Her professional approach starts with a detailed analysis of each person's lifestyle and dietary needs, seeking to improve areas like health, weight control, emotional stability, and anxiety, recognizing their interconnection.
