Art of Investing
Lessons from Steve Mandel - [Joys of Compounding, EP.30]

Art of Investing

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2025 84:13

Our teacher today is Steve Mandel, founder of Lone Pine Capital, one of the defining investment firms of our time. For starters, Steve is, without question, among the most important leaders in the investment management industry. Consider that Seth Klarman once called him, “the best industry analyst I've ever met, who became the best long short hedge fund manager of his generation.” In our opinion, the magic of Lone Pine resides in the principles that form its foundation and the people that animate its culture. But to understand the organization, you really need to first understand its master builder, a man of unusual integrity whose reputation across every dimension of his life and at every chapter of his life is so consistent and compelling when it comes to investing. Steve has an infectious Buffett-like love for the craft, and he's someone who seems more rooted in an orientation of service than any investor we've ever met. And one of the great paradoxes of this story is that from day one, Steve deliberately architected Lone Pine so that it would always be about more than just him. Beyond Lone Pine, we also discuss the value of having heroes and mentors, how relationships can enrich an education and a career, the art of doing great research, and what is important when investing in periods of accelerated change. John Gardner once said, “There are men and women who make the world better just by being the kind of people they are.” It's truly an honor to bring this conversation to you with one of those kinds of people. Please enjoy class with the one and only Steve Mandel. An episode from Ranchero Drive Baptist Church, a Bible believing, Bible preaching church in Kerrville, Texas. What Ranchero Drive Baptist Church (RDBC) Believes: The ScripturesWe believe the scriptures are verbally inspired of God making them the supreme and final authority for our faith and practice, and are preserved in the KJV Authorized Version.  GodWe believe in one God existing in three persons (The Holy Trinity): God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Existing without beginning and without end.  JesusWe believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His death on the cross to pay in full the debt for our sins, His resurrection, and His coming return.  The Holy SpiritWe believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, one with the Father and the Son, the indweller of every believer to enlighten and seal each believer until the day of redemption of the body.ManWe believe that God created man in His image in a state of innocence, but through temptation, man transgressed and became dead in trespasses and sins. As a result, all men inherited a corrupt nature, are born in sin and are under condemnation. Security of the BelieverWe believe that those who, by faith, receive Jesus Christ as their personal Savior are born again of the Holy Spirit, are the children of God, are heirs and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ, are kept by the power of God and can know they are eternally saved forever! Last ThingsWe believe in the imminent, pre-tribulation, pre-millennial return of Christ. The Lord shall return for His church and rapture out the church at any given moment. The world will then enter into a seven-year period of tribulation that will end with the battle of Armageddon and the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. He will come as “King of Kings” and “Lord of lords”, and establish His kingdom that will last for 1,000 years. The Lord will then judge the living and the dead at the Great White Throne Judgement (which is different from the judgement Seat of Christ where the Lord judges the Church). After this, all the lost, Satan, death and hell are cast into the Lake of Fire, while the Lord and His saints enter into “Eternal Bliss”.  You may write to Ranchero Drive Baptist Church at:801 Ranchero Road, Kerrville, TX 78028Have A Blessed Day,Ranchero Drive Baptist Church  The KJV Bible Preaching Churches Podcast is directly supported by Doss Metrics LLC | Ministry Services based out of Cleveland Texas. Welcome to Sunday Civics, where L. Joys go beyond the headlines, the doom and despair, to discuss civic engagement and taking action. Yes, there is a growing frustration with elected officials and the lack of visible leadership. But, she's challenging us to reflect on our roles—are we waiting for leadership, or are we actively engaging, organizing, and holding officials accountable? If the public isn't actively pushing for change, officials won't feel the pressure to act. She highlights a recent example where grassroots organizers created a 24-hour State of the People event, demonstrating that true leadership comes from the people first, not from politicians.

Can real friendship heal division in the Church? When I sit with John 17, I'm struck that He was praying for a unity that's visible, relational, and compelling—a unity that makes the world stop and notice that He was sent by the Father. That kind of unity shows up in real friendships, in shared service, in conversations where we seek truth together—not to win an argument, but to love each other well and grow together, even when we don't see eye to eye. It's messy, but it's also where the Lord does His best work. In this episode of EquipCast, I sit down with Max Chapman and Jeremiah Zimmerman from the More Mercy apostolate to talk about what this looks like in real life. Max shares how praying with John 17 sparked a deep desire in him to build bridges with Christians from other traditions. What started as simple conversations turned into friendships that not only challenged him but also strengthened his Catholic faith. You'll hear why unity isn't just an ideal for theologians—it's something we're all called to live, one relationship at a time. Joining host Michael Azevedo on this episode are Jen Bradwell and Todd Boekelheide, the married co-directors of "Make A Circle," a new documentary that offers a rare, inside look at the lives of child care providers and early educators — the backbone of a child care system on the brink.   The film premieres Monday, September 1 streaming nationally on PBS.org, the PBS app and on PBS TV stations (check local listings) across the country.    As Jen Bradwell says: “Make A Circle is a love letter to early educators and a portrait of a child care system in crisis. The film delves into one of the greatest disconnects in American society: the importance of a child's first five years versus how the work of early care and education is valued.”   Often viewed as “babysitters,” the dedicated educators in Make A Circle create magic in the classroom, face struggles at home, and remain passionate about their profession. The film gives voice to these educators and their ideas on the best ways to improve the system.    Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum.

August 23, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Pentecost 11 - Psalm 117; antiphon: Psalm 96:6a; 115:18Daily Lectionary: 1 Kings 3:1-15; 1 Kings 3:16-4:34; 2 Corinthians 1:1-22“The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.”  (Psalm 117:2)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. These words are easily said, but not so easily believed. God's faithfulness endures… forever? Forever is a long time. A lot can happen in that timespan. Whatever good things have happened and will happen, plus whatever bad things have happened and will happen, all that is included in “forever.” That's a lot of good and evil, a lot of laughter and a lot of tears, a lot of triumph and a lot of sickening loss. It is not easy to believe that God's faithfulness endures forever. Especially when you're on the receiving end of sorrow, grief, shame, hurt, addiction, loss, or any other affliction of body and soul, possessions, and reputation. Where is God's faithfulness then? But to be honest, faith in God's love and faithfulness to what He has promised in the Gospel is never easy. Instead, faith would be impossible if it were up to you. In good times, you would not think that you needed to trust in God's faithfulness. You would simply expect it, as you expect the light to turn on when you flick a switch. And in bad times, you would despair that God has forgotten to be faithful. You would hurt in your soul, thinking that God decided to forget you and leave you to figure your mess out for yourself. Neither attitude would foster saving faith in the heart. The good thing is, God's faithfulness endures forever for you, in Christ. In Jesus' cross, you see the epicenter of God's faithfulness for you, forever. In every time and circumstance, God's faithfulness in Jesus remains. What if you are smug and content, thinking little of Jesus' salvation and focused on other things more? Nonetheless, God's faithfulness remains in Christ. He calls you to repent, but His love for you remains. Jesus' blood redeems even those lost in apathy. And what if you despair of salvation? Even then, God's faithfulness remains in Christ. See the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. And if He has taken away your sin by His death, there is nothing more that can condemn you.The Holy Spirit creates faith in Christ for you. This is not the believer's responsibility! This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Saving faith is what He does. We even know where the Holy Spirit works: the preaching of the pure Gospel, the Absolution, Baptism, the Lord's Supper, in the context of the liturgy. Since the Holy Spirit and not you is responsible for saving faith, it is much easier to believe in God's faithfulness, even when things are bad. Just be in the Word! The Holy Spirit will take care of the rest.In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure By the cross are sanctified. Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide. (LSB 427:4)Rev. Instagram:   pig_ture_perfect_rosey http://www.tiktok.com/@pig_ture_perfect_rosey A short bio about Rosey's family:           My name is Joanna and I am married to my husband, Nathaniel. We live 10 minutes north of Boston,MA. We have one dog, one pig and two cats. When we first got Rosey (when she was 8 weeks old) we had 2 dogs and one cat, but sadly one of our dogs passed away last November.            I am a school adjustment counselor and I am a licensed mental health counselor. Luckily I have the summers off :)           My husband is in graduate school on the path to becoming a school counselor.            What happens when your spouse surprises you with a pig — without warning, without research, and without any idea what comes next? For Joanna, that unexpected day marked the beginning of a two-year journey with Rosey, a spirited, affectionate, and occasionally bossy pet pig. In this episode, Joanna shares the ups and downs of learning pig care on the fly: from diet and enrichment challenges to navigating pig moods and managing behavior changes.           We talk about the importance of early training (harness work, car rides, and even painting tricks!), how Rosey's relationships with other pets have evolved, and why consistency between family members is key for good pig behavior. Joanna also offers a realistic look at the joys and challenges of living with a highly intelligent animal — one who keeps her on her toes and fills her home with personality.           Whether you're an experienced pig owner, a hopeful future pig parent, or simply curious about these amazing animals, this episode will make you laugh, nod in agreement, and maybe even rethink how you see pigs. Highlights:     •    How Joanna's husband brought home a piglet without telling her     •    Adjusting expectations from “dog-like” to “pig-realistic”     •    Harness and ramp training a pig from a young age     •    Managing behavior changes and avoiding “good cop, bad cop” dynamics     •    Why cats can make great pig companions     •    Rosey's list of tricks — including painting!     Autumn's Links:  Website: https://www.autumnacresminipetpigs.com/ Email: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs Educational Membership Group: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/autumn-acres-educational-membership-group Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/autumnacresminipetpigs/ Facebook:  HTTP://Facebook.com/autumnacresminipetpigs Free Community: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/autumn-acres-free-community YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCGue5Kp5AwOXkReCGPUyImA Stan Store: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs Newsletter: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs

I have freedom of movement.'”—Isabella Rossellini    When I recently read Isabella Rosselini's quote shared above about why she, initially unconsciously, and then consciously chosen to live alone, referring to not having a romantic partner, for over 30 years, I spontaneously found myself smiling in appreciation of her candor and openness to discovering the gifts that life wants to share with us if only we would let go of narrow constructs of how one's life must look. The value we give our lives when we understand how to find serenity for ourselves, is revolutionary because we give ourselves the reins, or should I say the recipe, for exactly what will bring us peace. The concept of serenity lies at the heart of what we feel when we are living a life of contentment. And as has been shared regularly here on TSLL, each of us will cultivate our life structure - relationships, responsibilities, rituals, routines, excursions, home life, etc. - differently to nurture ourselves well in order to be able to live, express and engage fully. Too often no variation is given to certain ingredients in one's life in order to find or be at peace. If we do find peace without these purported to be 'must-have's, as Rosselini has demonstrated, society can gang up on us to pressure us or make us doubt our own inner truth. But whether or not to live with another person, specifically a romantic partner, is indeed a variable, not a constant, in the many variations available to us as we cultivate our unique life to discover where contentment resides. Back in 2015, podcast episode #33 - How to Live Alone Well - was shared and included 16 approaches and benefits of doing so. While I won't repeat those benefits in this episode, and I encourage you to explore them, it is now ten years on, and as TSLL readers know, I continue to live alone by choice. A choice, a priority for living the life where and how I find true contentment. Of course, many listeners/readers who know me, know I am not really alone as I live with my pups and have done so for all but three years of my adult life. For me, this is also a choice because my dogs let me just be, and I have not yet found a human being who is comfortable with letting me just be. In other words, giving me freedom along with trust, so that the home that is a sanctuary is indeed that for all inhabitants. So today's episode will dive a bit deeper, sharing the joys of this way of living and savoring immensely everyday life - alone and delightfully so. Briefly just alluded to - what you will notice as an intentional undercurrent in all of these joys shared today is freedom. When we give ourself the freedom to choose what is most nourishing and nutritive for our well-being, we step closer to living a life of contentment, if we aren't already. Ultimately, as we talked about in episode #403 - 10 Ways Integrating Buddhist Psychology into Your Everyday Life Cultivates Contentment - the core purpose of Buddhism is to bring deep healing, well-being and inner freedom. So whether you are living alone by choice or by circumstance, the time you do live alone has the opportunity through this freedom to become intimately in tune with yourself so you can ascertain with clarity and self-trust how you want to live your life so that it is grounded in contentment. Let's take a look at this list of 8 Joys of living alone. Tune in to the episode and find the Show Notes here on TSLL blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast407

With so much going on these days it can be challenging to stay balanced and present for whatever shows up in our world - pleasant or unpleasant. In this talk Mary discusses the idea of joy and sorrow and the eight worldly winds as a teaching to ground us right here and be open to whatever shows up. Denying the present moment is a hallmark of dukkha and our path is to move away from that dukkha. Recorded July 26, 2025 in the virtual worldSend me a text with any questions or comments!
