Aanya discusses her project, "Sharing the Joys of Cultural Diversity," which focused on fostering understanding and appreciation of cultural differences among children in her community. Aanya highlights two key components of her project: facilitating discussions about cultural identity in local schools and creating a children's book that details her own experiences as an immigrant from India. She reflects on her personal struggles with cultural acceptance and the importance of embracing one's identity. Join us as Aanya shares her insights and the impact of her work in promoting cultural diversity. More about Annya: Aanya is a sophomore at Princeton University studying Molecular Biology on the pre medicine track. For her Gold Award, Aanya created a cultural education and appreciation initiative in her community to encourage children to develop their global literacy and spark their love for diversity. Aanya published a children's book, Samosas with Saanvi, to share how she grew to love her cultural identity, capture the joys of cultural diversity, and portray the emotional journey behind acceptance. The mission of her project was to bridge the cultural literacy gap she noticed in her community, allow children to discover their own cultural identities, and foster meaningful community connections. At Princeton, Aanya is involved in The Daily Princetonian Podcast and STEM Research Journalism teams, the Undergraduate Student Government Mental Health and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees, and the Council on Science & Technology Student Advisory Board. She is very interested in scientific and medical research, working with the IMDEA Materials Institute to learn more about biomaterials and regenerative medicine, as well as Fundação Oswaldo Cruz in virology and immunology. She loves to continue sharing her book and cultural story with family, friends, and community members. In her freetime, you may find her reading the newest fantasy or mystery novel, singing karaoke with her little sister, or playing with her shih tzu poodle Daisy. https://www.amazon.com/Samosas-Saanvi-Aanya-Kasera/dp/B0CCCKNZW3
The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
“'I think that's just how life panned out. I had children and it was difficult to have a relationship with a man who was not the father. And I started thinking, OK, I'll take care of the children and then when they're grown up, I'll be available for a partner. But then I found, I have to say, the great serenity of being single.'” She pauses, as if to savour the words. “'And if I hadn't, I don't think I would have been able to do all that I've done. I have freedom of movement.'”—Isabella Rossellini When I recently read Isabella Rosselini's quote shared above about why she, initially unconsciously, and then consciously chosen to live alone, referring to not having a romantic partner, for over 30 years, I spontaneously found myself smiling in appreciation of her candor and openness to discovering the gifts that life wants to share with us if only we would let go of narrow constructs of how one's life must look. The value we give our lives when we understand how to find serenity for ourselves, is revolutionary because we give ourselves the reins, or should I say the recipe, for exactly what will bring us peace. The concept of serenity lies at the heart of what we feel when we are living a life of contentment. And as has been shared regularly here on TSLL, each of us will cultivate our life structure - relationships, responsibilities, rituals, routines, excursions, home life, etc. - differently to nurture ourselves well in order to be able to live, express and engage fully. Too often no variation is given to certain ingredients in one's life in order to find or be at peace. If we do find peace without these purported to be 'must-have's, as Rosselini has demonstrated, society can gang up on us to pressure us or make us doubt our own inner truth. But whether or not to live with another person, specifically a romantic partner, is indeed a variable, not a constant, in the many variations available to us as we cultivate our unique life to discover where contentment resides. Back in 2015, podcast episode #33 - How to Live Alone Well - was shared and included 16 approaches and benefits of doing so. While I won't repeat those benefits in this episode, and I encourage you to explore them, it is now ten years on, and as TSLL readers know, I continue to live alone by choice. A choice, a priority for living the life where and how I find true contentment. Of course, many listeners/readers who know me, know I am not really alone as I live with my pups and have done so for all but three years of my adult life. For me, this is also a choice because my dogs let me just be, and I have not yet found a human being who is comfortable with letting me just be. In other words, giving me freedom along with trust, so that the home that is a sanctuary is indeed that for all inhabitants. So today's episode will dive a bit deeper, sharing the joys of this way of living and savoring immensely everyday life - alone and delightfully so. Briefly just alluded to - what you will notice as an intentional undercurrent in all of these joys shared today is freedom. When we give ourself the freedom to choose what is most nourishing and nutritive for our well-being, we step closer to living a life of contentment, if we aren't already. Ultimately, as we talked about in episode #403 - 10 Ways Integrating Buddhist Psychology into Your Everyday Life Cultivates Contentment - the core purpose of Buddhism is to bring deep healing, well-being and inner freedom. So whether you are living alone by choice or by circumstance, the time you do live alone has the opportunity through this freedom to become intimately in tune with yourself so you can ascertain with clarity and self-trust how you want to live your life so that it is grounded in contentment. Let's take a look at this list of 8 Joys of living alone. Tune in to the episode and find the Show Notes here on TSLL blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast407

This week on the Pod Rossko, Josh and Miles have been talking Bioshock 4, with the news that the game has been restarted so it'll be a long while until we see anything from it. Sadness. Still! In Game of the Week Miles talks the disappointment of Spy Drops and the not quite as disappointing Endzone 2, Josh has been playing Time Flies and shares what it's like to be a fly before you die. Joys. Josh has also been checking out the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound whilst Rossko has finally been thoroughly enjoying the wonders of Donkey Kong Banaza on Switch 2, which has had a price rise. The original Switch has. Eight years into its lifetime. What a world. Hey if you like our podcast why not leave us a review?! In this warm and wonderfully meandering episode of The Forest School Podcast, Lewis and Wem dive into The Joys and Shapes of Autistic Play by Max Alexander. Nestled among tangents about shouting sparrowhawks, jewel-encrusted slugs, and beloved sticks, they explore how Max's taxonomy of autistic play shapes offers both validation and practical insights for outdoor educators. Together, they unpack play types like pancake stacking, relational mapping, and object harmonising, and reflect on how this lens supports more inclusive, curious, and non-judgemental practice. The conversation touches on inner worlds, the limits of Bob Hughes' taxonomy, and the value of reframing behaviours through a neurodivergent-affirming perspective. With humour, honesty, and deep respect for Max's work, this episode is a love letter to the strange, sincere, and silly world of play.

Think about the deep neurobiological connection happening in your brain as you walk into a room and encounter someone who lights up at your presence, and the fulfilling sensation of knowing that person is beaming from the inside out with only one message, “I am so glad to be with YOU!” Without relational joy, there is no relational intelligence. Instead, relational joy is the antidote to the numbing out of our hurried lives because you walk around with a sense of knowing you are seen and loved. As we continue season 5 on relational intelligence, Josh provides what he calls the “JOY STARTS framework”—four principles and corresponding practices spelling the word JOYS to jumpstart relational joy in your life and in the lives of those around you. What happens when a society decides that separating infants from their mothers is normal? As I drove past a daycare at 6:00 AM, I witnessed a heartbreaking scene—a child less than a year old being handed to a complete stranger. This moment crystallized one of modern America's greatest tragedies: we've systematically removed children from their mothers in pursuit of a distorted vision of progress. These children are denied experiences once considered fundamental—crawling into mom's bed in the morning, taking afternoon naps at home, playing freely in their own yards, or making messes in the kitchen alongside their mothers. When exactly did we convince ourselves this arrangement was best for children? The feminist revolution promised liberation but delivered a different reality, one where children spend their formative years with strangers while mothers rush between work and home, perpetually exhausted and guilt-ridden.Scripture provides clear guidance on marriage and family that we've largely ignored. God designed men and women differently—not to compete but to complement each other. Marriage isn't meant to be a 50-50 arrangement where spouses battle for power and autonomy. Rather, it functions best when husbands and wives embrace their distinct, God-given roles as outlined in passages like 1 Corinthians 11, Ephesians 5, and 1 Peter 3. When we reject this divine blueprint, we don't achieve equality—we diminish both men and women, making them less than they could be together. Are we ready to honestly assess what we've lost? Our collective rebellion against God's design—through feminism, abortion, or the rejection of biblical marriage—carries consequences beyond individual families to our entire society. The deteriorating state of American family life suggests the bill for these choices is coming due. Grace has been juggling summer parenting, and Qua is balancing work and school, and one of our friends just had a baby shower—which got us thinking: baby shower for the first, baby sprinkle for the second? We also review the Russ drama, and Indigenous researchers are important. Then we shift into a real talk on grief, how micro joys help us get through the heavy stuff.

PINCHUSThe saying goes “Life is what happens to us while we're busy making other plans.”Reality presents us with challenging situations that tear us between the life we want and the life we receive. We find ourselves in a dispute with Divine Providence over what could have been different. However, life becomes joyful when we manage to ride the wave and accept what is happening— when we let go of what we wanted and go with what we've been given. The secret to happiness lies in the ability to understand that the main decisions are made by destiny. They are determined in a way that is beyond human understanding, and therefore it is impossible to judge life using our own sense of logic or reason. To understand this deeply, we want to explore an important question: Why was the division of the land of Israel done by lottery? After all, the decision was backed by the Urim and Thummim—wasn't that enough?Especially since a lottery often suggests weakness or a lack of ability to decide. Lotteries are used in democratic systems where every vote counts, and no single authority can arbitrarily decide. But a king, who is the sole voice, does not hold lotteries or consultations—he gives commands. So where is the honor of the Holy One, Blessed be He, who seemingly needed to convince through a lottery?

This week was pretty special for me; I had the absolute joy and delight of attending my son's graduation ceremony. Watching him receive his BA honours in computer games development was not just a proud parent moment, but a celebration of dedication and achievement. You could feel the excitement and emotions in the air, alongside the bittersweet farewells, as all these budding talents prepare to embrace new beginnings. This episode delves deeply into the theme of choice and how it shapes our lives at every turn. Just like my son, who's stepping into the unpredictable yet thrilling world of the games industry—where networking and perseverance are key—we all reach points where the path ahead requires us to make choices. Whether transitioning from university or facing midlife changes, the necessity of deciding our own directions becomes crucial. I've been there too, shifting from marketing into something completely different during COVID, embracing new choices that align more with my passions. It got me pondering, how often do we consciously make choices about our current place in life? Are we in jobs, relationships, or routines by choice, or by lack of choosing? It's interesting because not choosing is also a choice, isn't it? We explore this idea in today's podcast. We consider what success means and how to become intentional with our choices. Choices can be daunting, right? Even selecting from a menu at a restaurant can be a struggle, let alone making life-altering decisions! However, with a little introspection and the right tools, we can navigate more effectively and align our choices with our true desires. Join me as we discuss making choices, big and small, and ponder where those choices might lead us. And hey, remember, the key to any great journey is movement—whether you choose to choose, or choose not to choose, the power is in your hands. In this lecture, Jenny explores the profound significance of community in spiritual transformation. She begins by framing her discussion around two key scriptures—Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and Romans 12:9-21—emphasizing the importance of connection and support among individuals. Through these verses, she highlights that partnership not only brings strength during hardships but also cultivates warmth and protection against life's adversities. Jenny introduces the summer series, which will delve into the practices of community and serving, aiming to foster spiritual growth and transformation.Building on the foundational imagery of spiritual formation, she explains a cyclical process that includes formation, malformation, and counterformation—illustrating how to overcome the influences that can derail one's spiritual journey. Through a call to engage in prayer, she encourages attendees to surrender their burdens, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of community's role in healing and transformation. The narrative takes an empathetic turn as Jenny recounts the experience of a young boy named Sam. She parallels his journey through middle school, highlighting both the excitement and trepidation he feels on his first day, ultimately culminating in the profound loneliness he experiences during a gym class, where he is picked last for a soccer team. This poignant storytelling resonates with the lecture's overarching theme—that everyone shares an innate desire to belong and be known, reinforcing the idea that humans are created for community. By contrasting Sam's isolation with the biblical depiction of community, Jenny asserts that societal connections are critical for emotional and spiritual well-being.Jenny revisits the essence of community as articulated in scripture, mentioning how God's intention for mankind is rooted in the collaborative nature of the Trinity. She quotes John Donne to stress that “no man is an island,” reinforcing that isolation does not allow for true flourishing. Furthermore, she takes reflections from experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring community's vital role in transcending isolation. Distressingly, Jenny notes that despite advancements in technology and social media, loneliness remains an epidemic. She weaves in stories of communities rallying together for mutual support during difficult times, emphasizing the power of collective effort and encouragement. The lecture further delves into the complexities of human interactions and the roots of distrust that can form barriers to community engagement. Jenny discusses how personal traumas can lead to isolation and a defensive posture against forming new connections. By sharing Sam's journey through math class following his humiliating experience, she illustrates how past events shape our willingness to engage with others.Transitioning into practical applications, Jenny proposes that spiritual practices can help combat the tendencies towards isolation. She emphasizes the necessity of trust in God and the need to embrace vulnerability within community settings. Providing insight from personal experiences, she reflects on the transformative journey of forming deep relationships within small groups, demonstrating how these settings allow individuals to support each other during life's peaks and valleys. She also revisits Paul's epistle to the Romans, extracting principles for cultivating a healthy community—from sincere love and honor to the shared burdens of community life. Highlighting that love acts on behalf of others, Jenny urges the audience to foster genuine connections by actively reaching out and believing the best about those around them.As she draws her discussion to a close, Jenny reiterates the call for participants to take actionable steps towards deeper community engagement. By creating spaces for vulnerability and support, individuals can build a robust and loving environment reflective of Jesus's command to love one another. She encourages attendees to actively participate in fostering community, reinforcing that such actions can lead to transformative experiences not only for individuals but for entire families and communities. In her concluding prayer, Jenny encapsulates the essence of her message by affirming the gift of community, acknowledging its challenges, and inviting everyone to embark on a journey toward genuine love and togetherness in their spiritual walk.
