Earlier this year, the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world and pressed pause on society as it was before, forcing even the powers that be to confront how extractive behaviors have left a gaping hole where social safety nets should be. We are witnessing and demonstrating community resiliency, people power and the strength of Just Transitions as we reconnect with more intuitive ways of being, and as our neighbors and loved ones uplift one another and support each other through this struggle. In late March, Keenan Rhodes and Jessica Xiao speak with leaders from five member organizations of the Climate Justice Alliance over Zoom (you may notice some variations in audio quality and Internet connection), who shared with us how they are responding to and existing in the current moment. Our guests: Joshua Dedmond, National Outreach Coordinator at Co-Op Jackson and the Youth and Young Worker Organizer for Labor Network for Sustainability https://cooperationjackson.org/ https://www.labor4sustainability.org/ Doria Robinson, the Executive Director of Urban Tilth https://www.urbantilth.org/ Darryl Jordan, the senior organizer at East Michigan Environmental Action Council (EMEAC) Piper Carter, the events coordinator and organizer with EMEAC Aqelah Amani Amatullah Miyzaan, youth organizer with EMEAC http://www.emeac.org/ Alvina Wong, the Campaign and Organizing Director with the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) https://apen4ej.org/ Tom BK Goldtooth, the Executive Director of the Indigenous Environmental Network https://www.ienearth.org/ Explore the Climate Justice Alliance resources page here: https://climatejusticealliance.org/coronavirus/ Grassroots Power and Vision in the Time of COVID-19 Webinar: https://climatejusticealliance.org/funders/#Grassroots-Power-and-Vision-in-the-Time-of-COVID-19
Today’s episode is a small panel discussion between Dr. Ashley F. Miller and Jessica Xiao about how to make the atheist movement a safer space. As a head’s up, we’ll be talking sexual assault and harassment in the movement, so if you’re not in a good place right now, feel free to skip this episode for now and listen when you’re a much better place. Today’s a special Friendsgiving episode with two friends of mine, Marissa McCool and Jessica Xiao. Instead of awkward dinner conversations with your racist uncle, this conversation is going to be about some things that have been on my mind lately about social justice activism, such as self-care, perfectionism, and radical vulnerability.I’m releasing this a few hours earlier than usual for three reasons. First, in case anyone’s traveling for the holiday you can listen to this on the ride. Second, if you’re surrounded by shitty relatives, you can listen to this to drown out their bullshit. And third, by the time I usually release new episodes, 4 pm Eastern, I’ll probably be in the midst of a food coma, so better take care of it now while I’m still coherent. Welcome to another thrilling edition of The Triple Po! I attended Skepticon 10, which was November 10 - 12 in Springfield, MO. I had a lot of fun, and I learned so much from the workshops and speakers. I got to meet so many cool people, both old friends and new faces. I want to thank you the organizers for putting it on, and I look forward to attending the next Skepticon, which I found out will be in St. Louis next time, which is closer to me! For the palaver, I did some mini-interviews with six people : blogger, activist and friend Jessica Xiao; volunteer at the Humanist Service Corps Jude Lane; blogger and activist Heina Dadabhoy; blogger, activist, sometime podcaster and Queen of the Outrage Brigade Stephanie Zvan; Organizer and activist Monette Richards; and Founder and President of Black Nonbelievers Inc., and one of my favorite people Mandisa Thomas. It was such a pleasure and honor to speak to them. All of them have been on the show previously except Monette Richards, and that will be remedied soon as I am interviewing her next week. The show is longer than usual, but I felt that getting all these voices out there was important, and I hope I think y'all will agree. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash
Today's episode is a bit of a double feature. First up is a conversation with feminist writer Jessica Xiao! Jessica had a post about male feminists that I found very interesting and I'm so glad she agreed to come on to talk about it. We also discuss her background and where she sees herself (if at all) within the atheist movement. Check out Jessica's website for more about her and her writing! After that, I break down just how much dishonesty and victim complex there is in a video Sargon made about me. I wouldn't bother, except that it so perfectly encapsulates why Sargon and his followers feel so persecuted all the time. Leave Thomas a voicemail! (916) 750-4746, remember short and to the point! Welcome to another episode of the Triple Po! On the pre-ramble this week, I talk about how some redneck Trump supporter at a rally in Nashville thought it would be an awesome idea to wear t-shirt that extolled the virtues of slavery. Someone got a picture of this guy, and Facebook did its thing and found out who it was. Needless to say, the vast majority of commenters were not amused. I also remind my listeners of the impending approach of NaNoCon 2017. It will be coming March 18th, and tickets will are $15 up until the day of the event, and $20 at the door, or until all the tickets sell out. Don't wait and miss out on the greatest secular event in Middle Tennessee! On the palaver I speak to writer and activist Jessica Xiao. We talk about intersectional feminism, as well a peripheral issues such as racism, White privilege, the difficulty of getting people to take criticism, and so much more. Jessica is a tireless advocate for social justice, and she is a well-spring of knowledge. She may think she rambles, but her mind is so full of knowledge that it's no wonder she wants to share it with everyone! I hope you learn as much as I did!
