John Calder (1927-2018) was a giant of 20th century literary publishing, and a champion of free speech. Best known for publishing Samuel Beckett's novels and poetry, he brought much of the most innovative European literature of the 20th century to an English-speaking audience, ultimately won a landmark obscenity trial over Hubert Selby Jr's 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' and has inspired several generations of exciting writers and publishers. Joining Juliet to discuss Calder's life and legacy is Alex Kovacs, author of 'The Currency of Paper' (2013), who worked in Calder's bookshop in London in 2008-10.
