Not exactly a “horror movie” but 1989's Last Exit to Brookyn is a study of horrible people doing horrible things. Based loosely on Huber Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel, this bleak study in brutality tells a story of Brooklyn's savage underbelly. Directly by Uli Edel, it features some familiar faces including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Lang, Burt Young and Jerry Orbach among others. This our first of many episodes this year celebrating 25 years of Pearl Jam's excellent Binaural tour from 2000. This was the first tour year that the band produced bootlegs of every show that could be easily attainable at any big box or local record store. You may have seen on some of these CD's a little icon that features a silhouette of an ape and a human. These shows were a part of the Ape/Man collection, which were specific shows that the band selected as stand outs from this tour. Tampa is an Ape/Man show, and they were absolutely right to use the moniker for it. This was the seventh show on a bit of a tumultuous first leg run in North America. Taking place shortly after the Roskilde tragedy, a few of the early shows had some unease and tension on stage, but for this night they were able to compartmentalize what happened to put on a phenomenal shows with boundless amounts of energy. Eight Binaural songs are played at this show, including a handful that are incredibly rare to hear today such as God's Dice, Evacuation and Sleight Of Hand. We'll talk about how this era sounded sonically where the band, specifically Mike, put heavy emphasis on utilizing pedalboards more than any tour year to that point. You'll hear a lot of that come through in songs like Nothing As It Seems, the Daughter jam and Rearviewmirror. This is a great show that should be on everyone's list to listen to, and we hope to guide you in that direction! Also in this episode we'll talk about the Last Exit mishap, hydraulic machines and one of the strangest things that Ed's ever uttered at a Pearl Jam show, which will bring up a semi-obscure reference to a King Of The Hill episode. Send us a textIn 2002 Ally Zapp had a great date night on Boston Harbor. She went on a charity cruise and then a concert on the waterfront. She headed back toward Newport, Rhode Island. She stopped at a Burger King located in a rest stop on Route 24. Ally ran into a vile, convicted sex offender-rapist. Paul Leahy was 39yrs old and had 24 convictions on his record, including rape. Leahy cornered Ally in the ladies room and over nine minutes, he stabbed her countless times, as she begged, repeatedly for her life. Ally died in that Burger King bathroom, however an alert Mass State Trooper Lt. Stephen O'Reilly heard the commotion and entered the bathroom and arrested Leahy at gun point. There are countless Pearl Jam shows where all you need to do is mention a location by name and the majority of Pearl Jam fans know exactly what you're talking about. For one lone night at a chocolate factory, when you mention this Hershey show from 2003, everyone knows that it's remembered for one thing - mosquito bites! No, this outdoor venue wasn't invested with mosquitos. The band was greeted by a flasher at this show who had taken her top off in order for the band to recognize her. But what she didn't realize was that they were coming off of one of the longest shows in their history in Mansfield, MA, meaning a six hour drive to Pennsylvania in the same night potentially left Ed a little sleep deprived. It leads to an all-time rant where he comments on the size of her breasts, a quote that has gone down as one of the most memorable things he's ever said. With that being said, the band faced the challenge of following up the experiment by putting together a fun show with a lot of energy. They made up for two songs that were left out of the experiment in Last Exit and Glorified G, dug into some of the deeper Riot Act cuts with Help Help and one of the last versions of Get Right to date, and we get a random appearance of a harmonica on... State Of Love And Trust? Yeah, you read that right. Also, we'll uncover the true story about a friend of Stone's who guested on Rockin In The Free World at this show. Where is he now? The answer may surprise you... really surprise you. Javier makes his return in this episode and will talk about the unique tuning of Daughter, and how that helps transforms the song to make it sound acoustic, even on an electric guitar. This episode is about uncovering unsolved mysteries within Pearl Jam lore. We're back to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the memorable 1994 tour, and we find ourselves covering a Memphis show that does not get the acclaim that other shows from this run do. But perhaps this show is more significant than we think? We invite on Patron Mike Cribier to share his stories from this night that had been held back for quite some time. After sharing his recollection of this show to Pearl Jam fan run sites, his information could not be verified, and his story was never told. We're going to rectify that in this episode! As video from the early 90s tends to be a crapshoot for some Pearl Jam shows, this is indeed a show that does not have any visual aid. So how is it possible to tell if or when things are happening just by listening to bootleg audio? The stories that get revealed feature a fan getting heavily involved in Leash, Mike crowd surfing while wearing a Nosferatu mask and potentially the most important, Ed smashing his mic stand into the ground to create a massive hole. This is something that was famously done in Boston only weeks after, but could this have been the first ocassion? We'll get into talking about those storylines, as well as some excellent performances with the highlights being Deep, Not For You, Porch and Blood. We'll also talk about a pre-Vitalogy version of Last Exit... that a fan in the crowd knows the lyrics to? This episode is manhandled by a recurring theme in which Pearl Jam has never attempted prior or since. On a 2006 night in Prague following a very memorable series of shows in Italy, the band balanced a main set sprint with a first encore where five songs all connected. As we are used to sometimes seeing the songs Better Man, Nothingman and Leatherman used together in what has been dubbed "The Man Trilogy", on this night the trilogy expanded it's tribe by adding in Dead Man and Man Of The Hour into what we dub as The Man Pentology. This is a one off instance which was never repeated in this group of five again, and we're excited to share it with you because it's things like this that seem to get forgotten about over time. Especially at a show that was not played in America. As mentioned, this is one of the fastest main sets you'll ever witness from the modern era clocking in at an hour and 8 minutes. When sets tend to trail on the faster side, that's all thanks to Matt Cameron's furious pace that he brought to the table during shows in this era. Songs like Sad, Daughter and Marker In The Sand were all revved up more than usual, and even the songs that already have that identity such as Last Exit, Whipping and Animal were all amped up a little more than usual. We'll work quick through this set, but not before taking a moment to feature some of our favorite songs, including a few Filthy Fills tossed in there. Check out this week's Gear Guru segments with Javier where he'll break down a phaser that McCready uses on Life Wasted, to talking about a pedal no longer featured on Stone's board that was implemented in this version of Insignificance. This episode has been a long time coming. On its 10th anniversary, we are covering an absolute classic Pearl Jam show from Hartford, Connecticut in 2013. Randy has talked a lot about this show in the past, and this episode will be a platform for him to share his memories of his experience, and perhaps get up on a soapbox a little bit. This show is living proof that this small city in Connecticut is one of the best Pearl Jam crowds you can find. We'll talk about that extensively throughout the episode, but what you'll witness is every time the crowd cheers, Ed is completely beside himself. One massive standing ovation after Last Exit perfectly set the tone for what this night would end up being. While the crowd certainly is the #1 theme, it does share the #1 spot with the other important theme from this show. Less than a year after the fatal tragedy happened at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT, this was Ed's first moment to be able to react publicly to what had took place. After meeting with fathers of kids who were killed earlier that day, he gave an impassioned speech standing up for gun control and pleading the crowd to continue being loud about it. Songs like Long Road and Come Back reflect the mood of this theme. Another theme that derives from Hartford shows is over one song that has connected the band to the city since 2010. What was once an OTOTO (one time, one time only) performance was now being brought back for a second time - the Van Halen rocker Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. This song will set up a bit of a contentious discussion in this episode about the idea of them playing it. On one side you'll hear praise for the band giving this city some special love for making it a theme, on the other side you'll notice pushback for covering a band they have no business covering. And if you enjoy that conversation, you'll probably love the segue into Got Some as well. Gear Guru segments this week will focus on Lighting Bolt era songs Let The Records Play and Yellow Moon, as well as a little Jeff Ament talk focusing on his fretless bass from Alone. Absent significant spending cuts, Bidenomics will careen America over a fiscal cliff while institutionalizing a 1970s stagflation on steroids. America's looming fiscal cliff is as unprecedented as it is staggering. The legislation that most define Bidenomics – The American Rescue Plan, The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the (anything but) Inflation Reduction Act – are catalyzing the most rapid increase in America's national debt ever witnessed in a peacetime economy.
