In 2024 alone, an estimated 140,000 birds died from avian botulism. On this episode of the North American Waterfowler Podcast, I'm joined by Jeff McCreary, Director of Operations for Ducks Unlimited's Western Region, and Dr. Dan Smith, Ducks Unlimited waterfowl research scientist. We break down why Klamath is so important, the complicated battle over water in the basin, how avian botulism kills waterfowl, and an innovative new approach called Flowthrough that could help provide water for wetlands, reduce botulism outbreaks, improve habitat, benefit fish—and create better hunting opportunities. There is plenty of doom and gloom surrounding waterfowl and habitat today. This conversation is different. There are people working together to find solutions, and there is legitimate reason for hope at Klamath. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
JOIN US AT THE 2026 DUCKS UNLIMITED EXPO! July 31 - August 2 at the RENASANT CONVENTION CENTER in Memphis, TN Learn what's driving a new botulism outbreak in the Klamath Basin and what conservation partners are doing to help protect thousands of waterfowl. Host Dr. Mike Brasher is joined by Jeff McCreary, Ducks Unlimited's Director of Operations for the Western Region, and Dr. Dan Smith, DU waterfowl scientist, to discuss deteriorating habitat conditions in one of North America's most important waterfowl landscapes. After a winter of record-low snowpack and a spring that produced exceptional numbers of ducklings, water levels in the Klamath Basin are rapidly declining. Those conditions have created an elevated risk of avian botulism, threatening young ducks and molting birds concentrated on the region's wetlands. Jeff and Dan explain how the outbreak developed, why the Klamath Basin remains critical to the Pacific Flyway, and how Ducks Unlimited and partners are working to bring additional water into the refuge system before conditions worsen. Topics CoveredWhy botulism outbreaks occur during drought conditionsThe connection between snowpack, water availability, and wetland healthHow more than 100,000 ducklings were produced despite current challengesWhat “flow-through” water management could mean for the Klamath BasinThe importance of Lower Klamath and Tule Lake refugesWhy collaboration is essential to solving long-term water issuesHow DU and partners are responding to current conditionsThe future of waterfowl habitat in the Pacific FlywayListen now: www.ducks.org/DUPodcastSend feedback: DUPodcast@ducks.orgSPONSORS:Bird Dog Whiskey and Cocktails:Whether you're winding down with your best friend, or celebrating with your favorite crew, Bird Dog brings award-winning flavor to every moment. When Jesus came into this world, he established an eternal community called "the kingdom of God." Anyone in heaven or on earth who has submitted to King Jesus is a part of that kingdom, and the values & priorities of his kingdom are drastically different from those found in this world. #MoRealJesus

In this episode of The Consumer Finance Podcast, Chris Willis talks with Dan Smith, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association, about current challenges and changes in the U.S. consumer reporting system. They discuss how reliable credit information supports fair lending decisions and helps lenders understand a borrower's ability to repay. The conversation touches on rising FCRA litigation, new state efforts affecting what can appear on credit reports — especially medical debt — and the growing issue of “credit washing,” where large volumes of questionable disputes can hide accurate information and slow resolution of real errors. The episode also highlights the importance of working with regulators and policymakers to preserve a nationwide credit reporting system that is complete, accurate, and consistent in supporting responsible lending and access to credit. Rum -- despite its exotic reputation -- isn't an escapist novelty so much as a lived-in, agricultural spirit, grounded in real places and real work. No one makes that case more convincingly than this week's guest, Dan Smith, managing partner of Queen Mary Tavern, a Ukrainian Village institution and longtime favorite of the Joiners boys. Dan cut his teeth at The Violet Hour, then behind the bar at Barrelhouse Flat under Stephen Cole and Greg Buttera, before opening Queen Mary in 2015 with Heisler Hospitality and building its singular, maritime-spirits-driven program. He joins us on the coldest day of the year for a proper Rum 101, touching on what actually creates Jamaican “funk,” how fermentation choices shape flavor, and why Queen Mary has worked to place rum in a less escapist, more everyday context -- plus a handful of great stories along the way, from magnum Jamaican pours to the improbable discovery of a tavern sealed in time since the 1970s.
