In keeping with our Star Wars theme this week, today we discuss their strong female characters and how well the series passes the Bechdel Test. The latest two entries into the Star Wars universe have had strong female leads at the center. Show regulars JD and Yolanda T. Cochran join me today in this special episode to discuss that role that strong women have played in the various franchise installments. We also get into how many of the films pass the Bechdel Test. The test sets up three simple parameters for a movie: 1) you have two or more female characters, 2) they talk to one another, and 3) they talk about something other than a man. Is the test a valid one for determining a film's gender diversity? About the Mini-seriesBreaking the Glass is a Radio Film School podcast mini-series and short film docu-series addressing the issues of gender inequality in film and television. For all you artists who've ever felt mediocre, this episode is for you."Amadeus" is easily one of my favorite movies. I can watch it over and over. It tells the tragic and fictional tale of Italian composer Antonio Salieri and his "complicated" relationship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It won F. Murray Abraham his first (and I think only) Oscar for Best Support Actor. In the film, Salieri laments at being just a mediocre composer when compared to the likes of Mozart (whom he claims to have killed). As artists, we sometimes feel like Salieri, don't we? We see other people's work and feel like we pale in comparison. That we're just...mediocre. Today on the show we're going to explore this topic and see if we can't come to a new perspective that is healthier for our craft (and career). On this episode, we'll hear from some talented Atlanta-based filmmakers, namely Chris Fenner (who you may remember from the very first "Short Ends" episode "What the Hell Are You?"); Dan Duncan of Remedy Films; and music video filmmaker Isaac Deitz. We also hear again from a Radio Film School favorite, Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures. Lastly, we hear from Yolanda Cochran, who recently finished a 6-month consulting gig at Netflix.Music Tips - Picking Music for Your ProductionThis week during the sponsor segment I start a series of tips related to music and film. Every artist deals with it in their career—the difference between what they envision, and what they actually create. How to deal? There's a well-known video of "This American Life" host Ira Glass sharing his thoughts about what he calls "The Gap." It's the difference between your taste (what you know to be good work) and your talent (what it is you're actually able to create, which is often not as good as you'd like it to be). This week, on the first main "Radio Film School" episode of 2016, we dive into this issue. You'll hear from Sam Mestman, CEO of We Make Movies; Ryan Booth, filmmaker, DP and creator of the music performance web series "Serial Box Presents"; and Patrick Moreau, co-founder of Stillmotion and LearnStory.org. If you've ever faced "the Gap," this is the episode for you."Shooting Sunshine" ReturnsWe also have the next installment of my "Shooting Sunshine" segment. The behind the scenes look at the making of "Little Mixed Sunshine", the first episode in my short film documentary series about bi-racial people. In it, I answer the question: "Why is this film STILL NOT DONE?!" Support Our Sponsor and You Support the ShowA huge way you can support the show is by checking out our sponsors. It's 2013, and all the biggest films are based on comic books. The top sitcom of the last half-decade features nerdy scientist types as leads...and it's not about them being bullied. A certain convention set in Southern California dominates pop culture for a week every year, and has spawned a million wannabe conventions all around the country. People who have scads of Star Wars action figures aren't mocked, but rather celebrated (and can make a pretty penny off them, if they're old enough and in good enough condition). So the question is: what does it mean to be a geek anymore? Who is a geek? How far does one have to go to be considered a geek amongst the geeks? These are the questions that plague Kai, so what better place to talk about them than with his MILF co-founder on another episode of FILM DON'T HURT? I don't know if we've made it clear enough, what with each of us hosting our own podcasts, but Kai and I both dig podcasting. Also, having started this site after becoming friends, we dig each other. So, it's only natural that we wanted to do a podcast together (again, especially after having started this site). Problem was, see the first sentence of this paragraph. Namely, neither of us was willing to ditch our first shows. That said, after a couple years, we've put together a plan (and a show) that lets us have our cake and eat it as well. Thus, FILM DON'T HURT is born. In this episode, we attempt to discuss the career of Adam Sandler. A polarizing figure in today's film community. Has Sandler gotten lazy and taken advantage of his place in life? Or is Sandler living the American dream by making silly comedies with all his best buds? Listen and find out what we think! We likely won't ever review a film specifically, nor will we give you lists. As mentioned, we're buds, and this podcast is meant to capture the feel and tone of a conversation (sometimes debate) between friends. It'll be a no-frills, lo-fi show, kept to a modest length of 30-40 minutes, and delivered every two weeks. That's the plan, anyway, and we hope you dig the hell out of it. Please enjoy, and let us know what ya think if you do! A couple notes: * You can find the show on PodOmatic by clicking here. We're back, with episode 2 of Catching Up With, in which I'm joined by Nick Jobe of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob. For those with short memories, this is the micro-podcast in which I interview LAMBs interested in being caught up with. These will generally be in the 10-20 minute range, and I'm hoping that they're a good way to re-spotlight the blogging of longtime members, and serve as an opportunity to put a voice to those bloggers that don't yet podcast. Either way, I'm sure no one would mind having some special attention paid to them again on the main page. I'd prefer to catch up to you all in order of LAMB number (since it wouldn't really be catching up with anyone if they were a brand new LAMB), but that's a totally impossible dream there, so I'll just go first-come, first-served and take it from there. If you're interested in being caught up with, send me an email with the subject "LAMB Catching Up With," along with your name and site name. I'll be in touch at some point after that. FYI: I don't expect that these will be posted with the regularity of the LAMBcasts, so it could be some time before we get together. As usual, the music is provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service. Catching Up With... is also on iTunes, so you can subscribe there until your fingers bleed. Please, share your comments, suggestions, or otherwise, about our guest or the show in general. Thanks!
So, a long time ago, we had a feature on the LAMB called "It's a Wonderful LAMB," where either Nick or I would revisit a LAMB's site and call attention to them - what we liked, where they were from, etc. I liked it, however short-lived it was. It's kind of along those lines that I got this new idea. It's really simple, but I think could be quite nice. The title is "Catching Up With..." and consists of me interviewing those interested. I've come up with a scripted set of questions to start with, and I'll add some personal questions where applicable. I'm sure the questions will evolve over time, but it's a good start, I think. These will be more or less be micro-podcasts - though the first one went about 25 minutes, I can't imagine an interview going longer than 10-15 minutes normally. I'm hoping that this is a good opportunity to put a voice to those bloggers that don't yet podcast. (Note: I initially posted this on the forums and have a few people in the queue already). Here is episode one, starring Jason Soto of Invasion of the B Movies, LAMB #5. Anyone familiar with the LAMBcast won't need to catch up with him all that much, but that doesn't mean he doesn't give some great answers - anyone familiar with Jason knows he just has a certain way with words. If you're interested in being caught up with, send me an email with the subject "Catching Up With," along with your name and site name. I'll be in touch at some point after that. FYI: I don't expect that these will be posted with the regularity of the LAMBcasts, so it could be some time before we get together. As usual, the music, as provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website, is the bomb. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service. This podcast in not yet listed on iTunes, but you can subscribe to it in iTunes via the podomatic page regardless.
