Welcome to the final episode of our three-part series on the extraordinary composer Gustav Holst! If you missed our earlier episodes where we explored Holst's life and his famous orchestral suite The Planets, be sure to check out those episodes using the links below. In today's episode, we dive into a different side of Holst's musical genius—his First Suite in E-flat for Military Band. Composed in 1909, this suite quickly became a cornerstone of the wind band repertoire and showcases Holst's love for British military music traditions. We'll explore how Holst, a talented trombonist himself, was inspired to create a piece that highlights the power and versatility of military band instrumentation. From its majestic opening to the lively, dance-like movements, each section of the band—brass, woodwinds, and percussion—gets a moment to shine. This suite is a perfect example of how Holst brought innovation to the world of wind band music, making it one of the most frequently performed pieces in the concert band repertoire today. The First Suite in E-flat has been celebrated worldwide for its inventive orchestration and emotional depth, making it a favorite among both performers and audiences. It's also a popular choice for music educators introducing young musicians to the rich history and expressive possibilities of wind band music. I hope you enjoy these musical adventures, and I look forward to bringing you more in our next brand-new episode in two weeks! The Shadow is a collection of serialized dramas that originated in the 1930s as pulp novels. It has since expanded to include radio dramas, pulp magazines, comic books, television, serials, video games, and films. The title character was initially created as a radio show narrator but was developed into a literary character by Walter B. Gibson in 1931. The radio drama, featuring Orson Welles, premiered in 1937. The Shadow character was depicted as having the power to manipulate men's minds, making them unable to see him. The radio program's iconic introduction, voiced by Frank Readick, and accompanied by a musical theme, has become a part of American idiom. Each episode concluded with a reminder that crime does not pay and The Shadow knows. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

SynopsisOn today's date in 1941, Greek-born conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos led the Minneapolis Symphony in the premiere performance of a new symphony by German composer Paul Hindemith, who came to Minnesota for the performance.Mitropoulos was an ardent promoter of new music, but few of the contemporary works he programmed were welcomed by audiences or the critics with much enthusiasm. Hindemith's reputation as an atonal composer had preceded him, but, surprisingly, his new piece for Minneapolis was billed as a “Symphony in E-flat Major” and, much to the delight of all concerned, featured recognizable tunes.By chance, another famous composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, was in Minneapolis that day, and was invited by Mitropoulos to attend the Hindemith premiere backstage, where he wouldn't be annoyed by autograph seekers. Rachmaninoff had a pessimistic view of modern music, but Mitropoulos was sure the famously dour Russian would like Hindemith's resolutely tonal new symphony. Rachmaninoff was positioned just off stage, and after the end of the symphony, which was received with great applause, Mitropoulos passed him as he left the stage. “Well?” Mitropoulos asked. “No goooood,” was Rachmaninoff's lugubrious response.Music Played in Today's ProgramPaul Hindemith (1895-1963) Symphony in E-flat; BBC Philharmonic; Yan Pascal Tortelier, cond. It's a 78 RPM Sunday, the last one for the year. This is one of the longer symphony performances in my dad's collection. Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main ghat in Varanasi on the Ganga River. Ganga Aarti (ritual of offering prayer to the Ganges river) is held daily at dusk. Several priests perform this ritual by carrying deepam and moving it up and down in a rhythmic tune of bhajans. I visited the city in 2012 with 10 others on a journey to Kolkata for a friend's (huge) wedding we were due to perform at. Varanasi is a dizzying labyrinth like city that is both deeply spiritual (open cremation is commonly practiced by the riverbank) and overwhelming: colours, smells, sounds and characters leap out at you from every corner. Recorded by Mike Bingham. Part of the Well-Being Cities project, a unique collaboration between Cities and Memory and C40, a global network of mayors of nearly 100 world-leading cities collaborating to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis. The project was originally presented at the C40 Cities conference in Buenos Aires in 2022. Explore Well-Being Cities in full at https://citiesandmemory.com/wellbeing-cities/
Donald Macleod explores Carl Maria von Weber's city lives and those dramas and scandals survived throughout. Weber's relationship with European cities mirrored his life and work, from the restless wandering of his earlier years, to the way his life changed after the success of his opera Der Freischütz. And in his final months he travelled to London to compose and produce another major opera, Oberon, but would die after giving its first performances. The young Weber had an unerring ability to cause offence. He got involved in multiple love affairs that caused him problems. He was also very good at racking up debts. These traits unfold as we follow Weber's picaresque journeys around Europe, flitting from city to city: sometimes chasing opportunities, sometimes in disgrace, at other times escorted away under armed guard. Then we read chapter 75, "Distance--part II," a good chapter where Wen Ning gets his brain back and immediately becomes a butler, Wei Wuxian is the demons, everyone at the Burial Mound plays American football with a baby, and Jiang Yanli is, as some might say, Very Clean. Come have a listen! And please let us know if you have any idea what potato onomatopoeia might be. (The Official PodRecesses MDZS/Homestuck Venn Diagram can be found here) Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Kenshi Yonezu - Lemon, arr. & perf. by Jae Meng Also used: Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy
Debate all you want about whether this qualifies as an "episode" when we spend perhaps 1/4 of it talking about chapter 74, "Distance--part I." It means nothing to either the cancelled hosts of this extremely cancelled podcast or Chief Cultivator of the show Milk. While Wei Wuxian forgets his car, A-Yuan meets his first not-stinky adult, and Lan Wangji does baby voice, we focus on the important matters at hand: embracing/avoiding our Shindanmaker Fates, discovering the origin of Death Grips, finding tiny men, and undergoing forced Noisespacification. Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Sadie Stanley - Call Me, Beep Me (Kim Possible Theme), perf. by Gregory Taylor Also used: Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy | Milk
Coming to you live from our new """"""""""studio"""""""""" (kitchen table with 2 acoustic foam squares), we're here to read chapter 72, "Recklessness--part I," and get into some clowntroversy! In this chapter, everybody heads to the Koi Tower, where Jiggy's OnlyFans finds its best-paying subscriber, Bitch McGuangshan Stand Up, and the entire cultivation world has ethics to argue and themes to put on display. You can also join us as we write a really good Gaia Online AU, learn about cookie metal, and explore horticulture, both in the form of growing Maynard James Keenans and enjoying Orntch! We welcome both Waffle House asses and brunch-ass bitches alike! Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion - WAP, arr. & perf. by Junior Marvel Also used: Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy
Gather round, slimelikers and fastboy math calculators! It is our burden to report on both chapter 71, "Departure--part III," and the latest disgraceful act of fandom rendering the internet inoperable. In this chapter, rude stinky pit boy Wei Wuxian meets up with Lan Wangji for a cringe compilation livestream, enters a Ratatouille flashback, and goes orangutan mode. Meanwhile, your hosts have a game to play, a Rick Sanchez quota to hit, and some zodiac signs to apologize to (and for). Whether you're #WithHer or whether you're hitting the Jiggy butt buffet, we hope you enjoy! It's chapter 70, "Departure--part II," and we've got Chief Cultivator of the show Jared here to help us try out "entirely to damn many" funny voices! We've got a legacy of Punished Marge to uphold, after all. In this one, Jiang Yanli owns everyone with facts and logic, just about every Jin throws a tantrum, and only one man (not shown) has the vision, the power, and the thighs to escape any culpability. Afterwards, we all learn a little something about car foreheads and girlboss soundtracks, and Fallon takes a breaky from their bakey to lay down the Fanfiction.net law. In no good faith could we talk about the funny sex number chapter (aka "Departure--Part I") without Sworn Brother Without Manners Brooks (notes pictured). This week, we take a look at the parallels between MDZS and Ariel Needs Legs, whether it's white knighting if it's for your sister, the real meaning of Blue Forgetting Machine, taking thicc leave, and, of course, Donust. Plus, Brooks throws your hosts the jokerfication option in a special revival of a long-dead bit. Much to think about! We are getting dangerously close to the sex number (of both chapters AND episodes), but today, we're talking about chapters 65 & 66, parts III and IV of the "Tenderness" arc. Lan Xichen XY gets out of his freezer bed to do some bump-n-dump, Lan Wangji looks disrespectfully, Wei Wuxian puts on the most benevolent possible trollface, Li'l Apple takes a Li'l Napple, and your hosts enroll in an impromptu Icelandic language course. Don't forget to spay and bneuter your bnuuy! RIP LAN QIREN HE WAS KILLED BY HIS BOYS MAKING IT CLAP ON THE GRAM Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Fallon & Roy, ft. CSoul & Jajanken – At a glance, you still recognize you are envious of you, fairy love Also used: Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy
Join your hosts at the Thomas Kinkade house of the extremely normal Lan family for chapters 63 and 64, parts 1 and 2 of the "Tenderness" arc! In this episode, Wei Wuxian is in full uguu mode, Lan Wangji (strapped) makes a bitch thing come out of his mouth, and Lan Xichen reminds us that his room is called the cold room because he be chilling. Meanwhile, Roy becomes QQAnon, Fallon introduces a new segment, and we both put on our airbrushed badass Jiggy t-shirts for it all! Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Steely Dan - Chain Lightning; arr. & perf. by Bill McBirnie Also used: Death Note Original Soundtrack (Hideki Taniuchi) - Near Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy
Wei Wuxian is BACK, and he is so sick, twisted, and Jokerfied that he has carved the Slayer logo onto so many parts of his body that, in the name of The Plomacy, your hosts needed friend of the show Max to help count them all. We read the entire "Evil" ("Despicable") arc, where we get to watch Wang Lingjiao take part in the Russian Sleep Experiment, calculate the width of both Wen Zhuliu and George "Fishgrinder" Corpseman's necks, witness death by nae nae, and learn what an antifa supersoldier truly is. May the sentiment and use of Wen Chao live on. Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Nadav Eliyahu Outro: Slayer – Raining Blood, arr. & perf. by Soft as a Pear Also used: Julius Fucik - Entry of the Gladiators, arr. & perf. by Orlan Charles Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy | Max
It is at last time to finish up the Pussin's Arc with chapter 60! We're putting on our jobes in honor of history's most tragic bruh moment. Jiang Cheng has been epicly memed, Wei Wuxian hambones, Wen Qing explains things queerly, and your leftist Communist Marxist (fascist) hosts are dying hard and loving controversy, as usual. Intro: Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You, arr. & perf. by Olivia Lin Outro: Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall; arr. & perf. by Fabio Vetro Also used: Frederic Chopin – Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9, No. 2, perf. by James Galway Noisespace | Patreon | Tumblr | Discord | Twitter | Fallon | Roy
