A measure of the representation of women in fiction
POPULARITY
Dr.s Kay and Ray dole out their 8 awards to any reality television shows they watched in the months of April & (half of) May, 2025: The Valley, Summer House, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Southern Charm, Below Deck Sailing Yacht, and, on Netflix, Battle Camp and Million Dollar Secret. If you haven't heard of Netflix's shows, Battle Camp & Million Dollar Secret, they each offer a new premise for challenge-focused reality television–the former a mix between The Challenge and Perfect Match, and the latter a mix between Anonymous and The Trust. The players from Squid Game: The Challenge stole the screen time on Battle Camp, although for different reasons for each. Which of these shows did you watch? Which awards would you give them? For example, our “TESTosterboned” award is given to a reality TV castmate or moment where testosterone boned the acting party and led to a particularly patriarchal (racist, heterosexist) result, in any variety of ways. We call the opposite award, “The Bechdel TEST” (each award has “test” in the name, given our show's name!), which we give to the most feminist, anti-racist or queer moments or castmates of a given month. To whom or what moment might you give these two awards? To whom or what moment might we have? -------------------------------------------------------------------Listeners! Every other week, Dr.s Kay & Ray review any and all of the reality TV they watched over the prior two weeks, awarding moments and/or castmates with their 8 Reality “Test” awards, while discussing the titular topics and more! Three very important topics were raised in the Real Housewives franchises this week. Although not handled perfectly by production, this collective of topics is incredibly, and sadly, relatable for more viewers than not. Thus, some powerful themes and common reactions are raised in ways that allow viewers to learn they are not alone in facing similar themes with similar reactions. Dr.s Kay & Ray discuss the strengths & growing edges of how these themes were handled by Bravo. Castmates and moments are given awards, including the TESTosterboned award (most patriarchal) and the Bechdel TEST (most feminist). Check out the episode to compare their choices to your own! This week, awards went to moments & castmates from the latest seasons of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Real Housewives of New York City, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, and Survivor.—----------------------------------------------------------Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. Welcome to the Okay But Did You Know? Podcast Pedantic Book Club! Quarterly we'll sit and talk about a book that is either a retelling of a classic tale or one that has been adapted into a tv series or film. This quarter we read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Did you know Tolkien recollects in a 1955 letter to W. H. Auden that, in the late 1920s, when he was Professor at Pembroke College, The Hobbit began when he was marking School Certificate papers, on the back of one of which he wrote the words "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit" which evolved into a story like the ones he was making up for his children? "Strength and Honor." It's our Black Friday episode, and we're celebrating Galicked this week and are discussing Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator II. An old-fashioned sword and sandal epic that both the gays and straights can equally enjoy, this might not match the prestige of its Oscar-winning predecessor, but there's a lot of fun going on here. It's nice to see this type of historic blockbuster embrace its gay Ancient Rome roots and lean more into the camp of its material. Get us a fan, because we're verklempt from all of the insanely hot men on display here. We'd risk it all for a night with our boy Paul Mescal, and daddy Pedro Pascal is the type of man we'd have on our bedroom wall growing up. Even though this movie may not exactly pass the Bechdel Test, Connie Nielsen more than makes up for it as the fierce Lucilla. We're also all here for the comeback of queer villains. Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger chew up the scenery as two twink brother Emperors adding some Caligula-level hijinks, complete with a monkey in a dress and a bisexual harem. We discuss the Denzel Washington hinted man on man kiss left on the cutting room floor, some brief thoughts on Wicked, and the iconic Liz Taylor 2001 Golden Globe appearance. Gllaaaaadiator! Tread Perilously's Cornucopia of Sci-Fi continues with an episode of Resident Alien called 'Girls' Night.' While Harry continues to work on the interstellar radio, Asta, D'Arcy, Kate, and Liv get a "GN59" text from Kayla and immediately plan a girls' night at the bar. Kate brings her cousin, Carlyn, while the mayor frets about Kate and D'Arcy becoming better friends. As the evening wears on, Liv reveals she hasn't had a raise in 17 years, prompting the other women to learn the town budget and, perhaps, fight for some equality. Will it go well for them? And will Carlyn end up part of Harry's plan for the radio? Justin and Erik learn more about Kate and the mayor's sex life than they expected. Justin faces Resident Alien for the first time while Erik remembers why he likes the show. Guest star Alex Borstein proves a good addition to a strong core ensemble. Erik points out the program's "great Syfy show" quality. Australia gets blamed for wrecking the "hotness quotient." Justin brings Rena Sofer into the conversation. Volvos remain a dependable automobile. The night still belongs to ABBA. Morissey ends up in the hot seat (again) and a carve-out for the Bechdel Test is proposed.

It's got everything, Magica DeSpell, Ratface, the Beagle Boys, and a character that's a clear stand-in for Little Bo-Peep (?!).
Dr.s Kay & Ray review any and all of the reality TV they watched over the week, rewarding moments and/or castmates with 6 awards (with “test” in their titles)! And the TESTosterboned (most patriarchal) award gooooes to… whom? Or, what? Hint: It has to be someone/thing new, now that the permanent installment has left our TVs!What about the opposite award, the Bechdel TEST (most feminist)? Or the TESTimonial award (best confessional)? To which moments or whom did the other 5 awards go? To whom would you want them to go? Dr. Kay rounds out her solo week with a half episode award show, followed by a BRAND NEW SEGMENT with a BRAND NEW GUEST HOST! Check it out to find out what & who we're talking about! As always, the TESTosterboned award goes to the most patriarchal moment or castmates from the past week in reality television, and, this week, Dr. Kay has three examples! But Dr. Kay subsequently counteracts all the patriarchal nonsense with two examples for the Bechdel TEST award and two examples for the BesTEST of friends/relationships award! This week, awards went to Love is Blind (UK), in addition to The Bachelorette, and Big Brother!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. This week, Dr.s Kay & Ray were in Seattle for a work conference, so they recorded both episodes at once from the hotel room! They go through the usual segments, ranging from what producers would do if they were psychologists to sociopolitical topics that arose in the episodes. Then, they do a mini-award show, with a sole focus on the TESTosterboned & Bechdel TEST awards.Plus, hear how/if Dr. Kay's & Dr. Ray's guesses for Jenn Tran's final 3 men have shifted since last week!—----------------------------------------------------------Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. Two Old Bitches: Stories from Women who Reimagine, Reinvent and Rebel
TOB followers know that we are obsessed with discovering positive and powerful roles for older women in movies and TV. That's why we lure our sister Screen Bitches -- Debbie Zimmerman (Women Make Movies), Malaga Baldi (Baldi Literary Agency) and Aruna Rao (Gender at Work) – onto the podcast at least twice a year to schmooze about what we're watching and how TV and movies challenge (or regrettably affirm) stereotypes of older women in popular media. This time, we were kind of gobsmacked. For three reasons. First, because Debbie was inducted into the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (Oscars!) this year --so this episode features her firsthand account of an Academy newbie, walking the (other) red carpet. Second, because we actually found at least one film and a dramatic series with really superb portrayals of older women. If you haven't seen Slow Horses (Apple TV) or Nyad (Netflix), stop what you're doing right now and tune in. We thought that Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were extraordinary in the way they portrayed 60-year old Diana Nyad and her best friend Bonnie Stoll in Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida. (Only three of us loved the movie.) And while they are not main characters, three —not one, but three!— powerful and pivotal women over 50 in Slow Horses – Sophie Okonedo, Saskia Reeves, and Kristin Scott Thomas -- epitomize characteristics you rarely see attributed to women of a certain age. And third, we were so inspired – especially by Slow Horses – that TOB is now launching a screening tool to let movie and TV makers know we're watching. You know how Alison Bechdel brilliantly coined The Bechdel Test as a set of three simple criteria to measure the active presence (or absence) of women in film? Well, we love that test – and appreciate the influence it's had on generating more and better roles for women -- so we're introducing The TOBies, a set of 5 criteria to measure the quality of presence of OLDER women in TV and film. And they are that the older women are: 1) NOT solely defined by their age; 2) integral to the plot; 3) making independent choices (e.g., they have agency); 4) NOT seeking a man as ‘the prize'; 5) there are at least two older women (e.g., no tokenism). We'd love to know what you think! And to know if you see any films or TV shows where you think the portrayals of older women meet these criteria. Wouldn't you love to join us on Screen Bitches this year? ------------------------------ Visit www.twooldbitches.com Follow us on Instagram @twooldbitches, Twitter @TwoOldBitches, Facebook @TwoOBPodcast Created, Produced and hosted by Joanne Sandler & Idelisse Malavé Edited by Jeyda Bicer Social media management by Loubna Bouajaj

The reserve, first established in 2014 after Superstorm Sandy left motorists in the northeastern United States without fuel, is located in New York Harbor, New York, Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine. The proceeds from the sale of the refined products in the reserve would be deposited into the Treasury's general fund, according to the text of the bill, which is likely to pass this week. Once the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve is closed, the secretary of energy cannot establish any new regional petroleum product reserve unless funding is explicitly requested in advance of an annual budget submitted by the president and approved by Congress, the bill stipulates. In an essay published on the Atlanta Fed's website, Bostic argued that the Fed should take a cautious approach to the economy, cognizant that the danger of higher inflation remains and easing monetary policy could fan the flames of rising prices. In particular, Bostic warned that a premature rate cut could trigger a surge of business activity that would raise demand and push inflation higher. “I asked one gathering of business leaders if they were ready to pounce at the first hint of an interest rate cut,” Bostic said. “The response was an overwhelming ‘yes.'” Source: breitbart.com Political/Rights Hunter Biden helped hire aides who mishandled Joe's classified documents
