Send us Fan MailThis is the special, uncut companion episode to our main June 2026 feature on Kouraku, officially certified by the City of Los Angeles as America's oldest operating ramen shop. While our main episode features English translations, we wanted to share our entire raw, heartwarming conversation exactly as it happened on Second Street in Little Tokyo. Listen in as host Michelle Malizaki sits down with Kouraku's owner, Mamoru Tokuda-san, speaking entirely in Japanese. Mamoru-san shares his personal journey from volunteering during the uncertainty of the 2020 pandemic to stepping up to preserve a 50-year-old culinary legacy after the tragic passing of the previous owner, Hiroshi Yamauchi. He also discusses the unique philosophy of Showa-era machi-chuka (Japanese-Chinese comfort food), the warmth of seeing four generations of customers return to the same tables, and how a high-tech cat delivery robot named Luna-chan found a permanent home alongside an irreplaceable piece of Little Tokyo history. Support the show
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to Japanese America! In this episode, hosts Koji Steven Sakai and Michelle Malizaki take the podcast on location to Second Street in the heart of Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, to record inside a true culinary and cultural landmark: Kouraku. Originally opened in 1976, Kouraku was recently honored by the City of Los Angeles with an official street sign certifying it as America's oldest operating ramen shop. To celebrate this incredible 50-year milestone, Koji and Michelle sit down with the restaurant's new owner, Mamoru Tokuda-san, who stepped in to take over the reins in January 2023. Mamoru-san shares the deeply moving story of how he transitioned from a restaurant career to volunteering at Kouraku during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually stepping up to preserve the space after the tragic passing of the previous owner, Hiroshi Yamauchi. We also look at the historical roots of Showa-era machi-chuka (Japanese-Chinese comfort food) and why its gentle, balanced flavors have sustained families across four generations. Note: For this episode, Koji reads the English translations of the interview so everyone can follow along with the history. However, we will also be releasing a separate, uncut companion episode featuring Mamoru-san's interview entirely in his own words in Japanese. In this episode, we discuss:The Magic of Showa-Era Nostalgia: Michelle explains why old-school Showa-era aesthetic is suddenly "cool" again and how Kouraku's vintage vibe instantly transports her back to her childhood in Japan. Preserving a 50-Year Legacy: How Mamoru-san balanced the pressure of taking over a historic business with the inspiration he drew from Kouraku's long-term staff—many of whom have dedicated 20 to 30 years to the kitchen. The Science of Machi-Chuka Flavors: The culinary reason Kouraku's stock is kept balanced and gentle, utilizing a chashu-infused soy sauce base rather than the overwhelming flavors of modern specialty shops. High-Tech Meets History: The introduction of Luna-chan, Kouraku's famous cat-themed delivery robot, and how it coexists with an irreplaceable, historic 1980s neon signboard that modern makers can no longer replicate. Food as a Cultural Time Machine: Koji and Michelle share their ultimate childhood comfort foods. Michelle reflects on making homemade gyoza with her mother, while Koji opens up about his lifelong obsession with curry rice, sharing a poignant memory of how his father's experiences in the WWII incarceration camps shaped his relationship with the dish. Hello and welcome back to the podcast! Starting with this episode, I present another entry in my "Listening To... " sub-series, this time focused on that long running film franchise with a massive pop cultural footprint, GODZILLA! While it's a pop culture reference known the world over, GODZILLA is perhaps best understood by one country and culture, that being Japan and its people. But what does GODZILLA music sound like? We might know it when hear it, but where did it begin? The scaly behemoth has been a towering figure of science fiction and monster movie cinema ever since the original movie, GOJIRA, premiered in Japan in 1954, inadvertently beginning what emerged as a popular sub-genre called "kaiju eiga". During the more than 70 years of big screen adventures, this series has journeyed from apocalyptic, black & white installments, to colorful kid-friendly monster mashes, topical storylines and splashy, big budget epics. Keeping pace with this is a great wealth of musical variety, from a number of talented composers, but the originator of it all is Akira Ifukube, a legend in Japanese film and music circles. It is Ifukube's music for the Showa era that is the focus of this first episode. Ikeda Hayato managed to garner the necessary support to become the President of the LDP and the Prime Minister of Japan after Kishi Nobusuke's resignation in 1960. He would prove to be almost the polar opposite of his arch-conservative predecessor, creating much of the social safety net which Japan continues to enjoy today. His successor, Sato Eisaku, lobbied for the return of Okinawa Prefecture and was forced to wrangle with complicated geopolitical challenges and domestic disturbances.Support the show My latest novel, "Califia's Crusade," is now available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple Books, Bookshop.org, and many other online platforms!
In this episode of Hunger for Wholeness, Ilia Delio continues her conversation with neurotheologian Shaleen Kendrick on the practical meaning of Christogenesis, wholeness, and adaptive evolution. Shaleen reflects on what she calls “evolutionary mismatch,” the gap between our rapidly changing world and the neurobiological capacities we need to meet it with wisdom, compassion, and creativity.Together, Ilia and Shaleen explore how spirituality can become a lived practice of integration: not simply what we believe about God, but who we are and what we do each day. Drawing on neuroscience, process theology, epigenetics, and the image of living systems, Shaleen invites us to imagine people less as machines to be optimized and more as plants to be cultivated toward wholeness.Later in the episode, the conversation turns to Christianity in transition, the need for new systems, and the possibility of “wholeness-making” as a guiding concern for families, institutions, and the planet. Shaleen also shares the metaphor of jazz as a way to understand harmony, difference, and the creative work of becoming whole in real time.ABOUT SHALEEN KENDRICKRev. Dr. Shaleen Kendrick, ThD, is an emerging neurotheologian who developed the Neuro-Relational Integration™ (NRI) model—demonstrating how conscious integration across Mind–Body–Spirit neural systems can facilitate rapid adaptive evolution in how we think, act, and relate to ourselves, others, and the challenges of our time. NRI integrates neuroscience with liberation theology to show that through daily wholeness-making practices we can expand our human capacity and create new abilities that nurture not just individual flourishing but transform the systems we live in. In this episode of Tunnel Talk, the crew is back in the tunnel after a lengthy hiatus and, in a bold break from tradition, arrives with absolutely no agenda whatsoever. The conversation wanders through the early stages of the Detroit City FC women's USL-W season, including impressions from the squad's start and what has stood out so far. The crew also takes stock of the men's side, whose spring campaign has been a little up and down, but mostly up, as DCFC continues to battle through league play and cup competitions. The discussion also touches on Detroit City FC's first ever appearance at The Soccer Tournament (TST), what it means for the club, and why the event has become such an intriguing addition to the soccer calendar.Along the way there are tangents, distractions, questionable transitions, and at least a few moments that can generously be described as incoherent rambling. Also, if anyone happens to see Garret, please remind him to send over the Channel 4:51 YouTube password. In this episode of Hunger for Wholeness, Ilia Delio speaks with neurotheologian Shaleen Kendrick about neuroscience, contemplative practice, and the biology of spiritual experience. Shaleen shares her journey from conservative evangelical ministry through deconstruction, suffering, and contemplative prayer into the emerging field of neurotheology.Together, Ilia and Shaleen explore how religious experience is not separate from the body but mediated through it. They consider how God-language, belief, prayer, trauma, neuroplasticity, and contemplative practice all shape the brain and body—and how changing our images of God can change the very neural pathways through which we experience reality.Later in the episode, they discuss the resistance many theologians have to locating spiritual experience in neurobiology, the promise and complexity of psychedelics and healing, and the growing scientific evidence that spirituality is an innate human capacity. Rather than reducing God to biology, this conversation asks what becomes possible when we understand the body as the living temple of divine encounter.ABOUT SHALEEN KENDRICKRev.

In this episode of Tunnel Talk, the crew gathers in the tunnel once again, and Red's mic audio is mysteriously very low, which some may consider the biggest win of the episode.Despite the technical “feature,” the crew still manages to break down Detroit City FC's massive win over Louisville City FC and what the performance could mean moving forward for Le Rouge. The conversation also dives into the beginning of the Dani Evans era with the club's USLW side, including some aggressively early reactions to the women's team roster that are absolutely fair and reasonable after roughly five minutes of observation. The crew also discusses a few interesting tidbits coming out of the Annual Owners Meeting before the episode predictably drifts into the usual Tunnel Talk chaos.⸻

In this episode of the Fan2Fan Podcast, Bernie, Pete, and Jon stomp back into their childhoods with Godzilla! The trio revisit the origins of Toho's radioactive King of the Monsters. They reflect on what it was like growing up on Godzilla marathons, when local TV stations turned entire afternoons into city-crushing must watch television. From the somber nuclear allegory of the original film to the wild monster mash-ups of the Showa era, they explore how Godzilla evolved from cautionary tale to pop-culture icon. Along the way, Bernie, Pete, and Jon also tap into the toy chest of nostalgia. They review Shogun Warriors figures, namely the massive Godzilla figure. It's a conversation about fandom, Saturday creature features, and the enduring legacy of a giant radioactive force of nature. For more info about the Fan2Fan Podcast, visit https://fan2fan.libsyn.com

Send us Fan MailThis week on When Doves Podcast, Jared and Ed get down and way too funky as they dive headfirst into Prince's legendary “chicken grease” scratch guitar style — the tight, percussive magic that makes your shoulders move before your brain even clocks what's happening. They start by tipping the hat to the OG architects of the groove, breaking down the genius of Jimmy Nolen and Freddie Stone, the unsung heroes who turned rhythm guitar into a full-on rhythmic weapon. Then it's off to Paisley Park (spiritually, at least) as they track how Prince took that foundation and, across his first eight albums, refined it into something unmistakably his own — sharp, sexy, and impossibly precise.Along the way, there's plenty of “wait, did you hear THAT?” moments, a lot of stank-face reactions, and a full-on celebration of the Purple One's funkiest instincts. The episode wraps with the guys' top 5 Prince tracks where that chicken grease is front and center.Strap in. It's nerdy, it's greasy, it's deeply funky.

The military general who became Emperor Hirohito's prime minister, Tojo Hideki is most often remembered as an iron-fisted leader who dragged Japan into World War II and—after spectacular losses—was eventually executed as a war criminal. Yet Tojo was far more than his ignominious end. In fact, as Dr. Peter Mauch argues in Tojo: The Rise and Fall of Japan's Most Controversial World War II General (Harvard University Press, 2026), he was one of the twentieth century's most accomplished military statesmen. Over a career of some forty years, Tojo successfully launched himself into the highest echelons of political power. He was not only a tactical genius, Dr. Mauch shows, but also a savvy administrator, a fierce imperialist, and a deeply loyal advisor to the emperor. Tojo's career took off with the notorious Kwantung Army in Manchuria, where he played a key role in escalating the Sino-Japanese War during the 1930s. As he rose through the ranks, becoming minister of war and then army chief of staff, he honed the efficiency of the Imperial Army and enhanced its influence within the emperor's court. All the while, he deftly negotiated the fractious military rivalries that arose wherever he went. Brilliant, ambitious, and often ruthless, Tojo reached political heights that were perhaps matched only by his precipitous fall in the final months of World War II. Layered and evocative, Tojo is at once a riveting military history of Showa-era Japan and a nuanced portrait of the relentless personality at its center. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode, Bill McGeeney interviews Chris Beckett of the Actual Astronomy Podcast. One day, he discovered a new sun glaring directly toward his observatory. This is the story of how he worked to bring sanity back to his nighttime environment. THE PROBLEMChris Beckett discovered an exceptionally bright light only about 2km from his Saskatchewan observatory. It was orders of magnitude brighter than typical outdoor lighting and nearly rendered his observatory unusable. THE SOLUTIONChris worked with municipal bylaw enforcement. Officials investigated and confirmed it violated bylaws. The neighbor appears to have kept the light off. THE OUTCOMEA rare success story. Chris's documentation and persistence through proper channels created meaningful change, proving individuals can combat light pollution effectively. "This, this was such an order of magnitude different from anything we ever saw before, Bill. Like even the photo doesn't do it justice!" - Chris Beckett"Well, this has been a great story, a great tale, great success.
