I'm joined by Matthew Carlson from the "What Am I Making" newsletter and we talk about an unexpected prison jazz band, how the limitations of the film technology of the time impacted how stories were told on film, and how a very short play was adapted into a substantially longer film for this story. You can watch The Valiant on YouTube and be sure to check out Matthew's newsletter.Other films mentioned in this episode include:The Cocoanuts directed by Joseph Santley and Robert FloreyUnaccustomed As We Are directed by Lewis R. “You're not a Senator, you're an honorary stooge."REBROADCASTCapra's Film Stands As Strong As EverIt's rare to find a film from 75 years ago that feels relevant still in today's world, but Frank Capra's 1939 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those films. Corruption in the Senate? Check. Corporate interests secretly working their own machinations behind the scenes to get their political puppets to do their bidding? Check. Cynical office staff who are only interested in making a buck? Check. Sad to say that the only thing that doesn't feel modern is that a politician like James Stewart's titular character could actually exist. Or at least survive in today's political world. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue with our great films from 1939 series with Capra's fantastic film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Here's What We Chat AboutWe talk about how much we love this film and why, highlighting everything aforementioned. We chat about Stewart and Jean Arthur as the perfect leads for this film, aided by the wonderful supporting cast including Edward Arnold, Harry Carey, Claude Rains, Thomas Mitchell and more. We discuss how the Washington, D.C. press and the real Senators received the film compared with the general public. And we discuss the people behind the cameras with Capra and what they bring to the table – Joseph Walker, Lionel Banks, Dimitri Tiomkin, Sidney Buchman, Lewis R. Foster and more. It's a top notch film that still speaks to its audiences, all while avoiding being cheesy while full of honesty. We love it.   Book Vs Movie: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington The 1939 Classic Film Based on a Story by Lewis R. Foster and Starring Jimmy Stewart   The 2020 election season is over (finally!) and the Margos want to celebrate by talking about one of the most celebrated films about American politics ever made--Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Director Frank Capra’s ode to decency and fighting the most difficult battles for America’s soul.  The story “The Gentleman from Montana” (an unpublished story by Lewis R. Foster) was a fictionalized version of the life of Montana Senator Burton Wheeler who investigated then-President Warren G. Harding in 1921over the Teapot Dome scandal. That scandal involved (which involved oil companies, land deals, and payoffs) caused the first U.S. Senator to go to prison--Albert B. Fall and was considered the biggest D.C scandal of the 20th Century (until Watergate in the 70s!)  Director Frank Capra faced a great deal of opposition bringing the film to life as the media and politicians based in Washington D.C. were completely offended at their portrayal as crooked and dishonest. It didn’t matter, the film became a hit and is now a revered classic nominated for 11 Academy Awards (losing most to Gone With the Wind.)  In this ep the Margos discuss: The basics of the Teapot Dome scandal and why it was such a scandal for the 20th century Frank Capra’s movies and main characters  Why the film was controversial for the time The cast: Jimmy Stewart (Jefferson Smith,) Jean Arthur (Clarissa Saunders,) Claude Rains (Senator Joseph Paine,) Thomas Mitchell (Diz Moore,) Harry Carey (President of the Senate,) and Beaulah Bondi (Ma Smith.)  Clips used: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington  trailer  “I Will Not Yield!” “Lost Causes” "What do you believe in?"
