Excerpt of the 20 Jan 1949 Kraft Music Hall starring Al Jolson. Victor Moore was the guest on this week's program, but this podcast is from the middle part of the show, and features Jolson, Oscar Levant, Ken Carpenter, and Lou Bring. Enjoy the scripted comedy, with some discussion about little Asa, Jr. After that, Jolie gave out with "If You Were The Only Girl In The World." Then, you heard it first in "The Jazz Singer," but here is a complete rendition of "Blue Skies." And after a little more schtick, "Someone Else May Be There While I'm Gone." The complete broadcast circulates with other Jolson radio shows on the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org.

The first thing you should know about double bassist Orin O'Brien is that she doesn't think she's anything special. The second thing you should know — as director Molly O'Brien's thoroughly endearing Oscar-shortlisted documentary short “The Only Girl in the Orchestra” makes perfectly clear — is that Orin O'Brien is very special, indeed. The first female musician hired full time by the New York Philharmonic in 1966, Orin has gone on to have a brilliant and unparalleled 55-year career playing the double bass in the Philharmonic. Molly joins Ken on the pod to talk about this remarkable musician, teacher and pathbreaker — who also happens to be Molly's beloved aunt. Set in the magical world of Manhattan and taking place as Orin begins a new chapter in her life, this heartfelt documentary shows us that talent, dedication, and a pure enjoyment of playing in the orchestra can make for a deeply fulfilling life. Now, isn't that special? “The Only Girl in the Orchestra” is now streaming on Netflix. 273: Construction Management is Profitable Welcome to the podcast! Today, I'm joined by the talented Renee Biery, a luxury interior designer, construction expert, and the host of the Only Girl on the Jobsite podcast. We're diving into an incredible conversation about expanding your design services to include construction management. Whether you're already doing this or thinking about it, we'll cover some of the common challenges—pricing, pitfalls, and the essential things to keep an eye on. Renee is an expert in navigating these areas, and we're excited to share her insights with you. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Topics Mentioned: Project Management Pricing Confidence Team Work Key Thoughts: I think that's where designers can trip themselves up unintentionally. They see themselves as the outsider, as the only girl on the job site, and it's very easy to just stay in that role. Renee Biery What's interesting is when we show up in a space, already personally aware that we deserve to be in the space, we don't feel like we have something to prove. Michele Williams Even those who know what they should be charging, or they already are charging, they aren't charging what they believe they are worth because they're uncertain of their worth. John Ford in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1964, Ford joined with some school mates to form a band called Jaymes Fenda and the Vulcans. That November, they released two singles, "Mistletoe Love” and "The Only Girl", both of which were written by Ford. "Mistletoe Love" got some radio play through that Christmas season, but the band split up shortly afterwards. In October 1966, Ford stepped in to replace the bass player of a South London R&B/soul band called the Five Proud Walkers, and made his debut when the band opened for Champion Jack Dupree. The Five Proud Walkers was a popular club band and played a constant stream of gigs in and around London. But, in the spring of 1967, they toured England with Pink Floyd and decided to make the shift to Psychedelic music. That July, they changed their name to Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera. The band released three albums and several singles but, in May 1970, Ford and drummer Richard Hudson left the band to join The Strawbs.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the annual affair celebrated the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” According to Vogue, the gala honored the legacy of Lagerfeld—the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, and his own eponymous line—and raised funds for The Met's Costume Institute. The biggest stars dressed to impress or in some cases dressed to make us stressed. According to The New York Times, rumors of a possible romance between the actors Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell swirled online this week after a series of seemingly flirtatious moments catapulted them into the spotlight. The two have been filming their upcoming romantic comedy “Anyone But You” in Australia, and fans have been following along as they post affectionate photos on Instagram and paparazzi photograph them on set. Sweeney, 25, is currently engaged to restaurateur fiancé Jonathan Davino, 38, and were spotted walking around New York City on Friday, April 28, seemingly squashing split rumors. In contrast, Powell has been a hot topic on social media as his longtime girlfriend model Gigi Paris seemed to have called it quits with the Top Gun actor. Fans got a first look at “The Hunger Games” prequel titled, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” following the drop of the trailer at CinemaCon on Thursday, April 27. The highly anticipated trailer starts off with Viola Davis, who plays the head game maker Volumnia Gaul, introducing “the creators of the Hunger Games themselves.” 64 years, to be precise — before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, which were immortalized on screen by Jennifer Lawrence. In the new film, a young Coriolanus Snow (who eventually becomes the vicious president of Panem) takes the spotlight as he is chosen to mentor an impoverished tribute named Lucy Gray Baird during the 10th Hunger Games. It's official! Rihanna's 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show Is now the most-watched of All Time, as stated on an updated Nielsen report. Her first live performance in over seven years garnered over 121 million viewers, surpassing Katy Perry's 2015 performance that garnered 120.7 million people. The singer brought the heat at Glendale, Ariz.'s State Farm Stadium back in February. She not only revealed she was pregnant with her and partner A$AP Rocky‘s second child, but she also performed her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits like “Only Girl (in the World),” “We Found Love,” “S&M,” “Rude Boy,” “Work” and more. Congrats to the multi-talented Rihanna. Well that's a wrap! It is surreal saying that, but genuinely, thank you everyone for tuning in to Son of a Beach every week! It's been such a fun ride. So much tea was spilled, breaking news was shared and many funny takes on pop culture were said. This podcast started out last semester as a segment in Beach Weekly and look how far we came? I created “Son of a Beach” to bring joy, fun and drama of course as a way for students and listeners to find out the latest pop culture news, but to hear a different perspective on topics. From cultural appropriation on television to Nick Cannon popping babies, a lot was discussed. Thank you to Rosie Montes and Renzo Pocasangre for partaking in the podcast throughout the semester and school year in their segments. As the season comes to a close, I want to show my gratitude to everyone at the Daily 49er for giving me the platform to share pop culture news and everything in between on a bigger scale. Lastly, I just want to say thank you for listening. This has been Kadie here. We had the pleasure of interviewing Rudy Touzet over Zoom video.Miami based pop singer-songwriter Rudy Touzet recently released his “Goodnight Moon” & “Treason” ahead of the release of his debut EP later this year. These singles were released following exclusive premieres with Wonderland Magazine /Atwood Magazine and EQ Music / Queerty. The release of these two singles follow the success of Rudy's 2021 single releases “Take It As A Win,” “I Don't Know,” “Runaway,”and “Say Less,” which have received a great deal of buzz for this new artist. Each of those songs reflected a different chapter in Rudy's life, from love to heartache, endings, and new beginnings. These premieres kick off a string of releases that will not only display Rudy's singing and song writing ability, but also his versatility. He wrote his first song at eight years old titled “The Only Girl”—a love song for his crush—and continued his love of songwriting through journaling which led to creating more songs. By high school he was still honing his craft, writing more songs and even considering auditioning for reality competition series like American Idol and The Voice. He eventually felt the timing was right to send his music to family friend, music executive Charlie Walk, who in turn wanted Rudy as part of his Music Mastery Mentorship Program. Through there, Rudy connected with his now production team Luke Shrestha and Simon Jay, collectively known as the critically-acclaimed Chapters. And as they say since then the rest is history, as Rudy has released a slew of buzz worthy singles throughout 2021 setting a foundation of what is to come in 2022. We want to hear from you!
