With returning guest and Perisphere senior editor Finn Odum! THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD might be the precursor to John Carpenter's THE THING (1982), but the creature feature uses its tale of a plant-based alien invader to a vastly different end. Instead of honing in on the slow creep of bellicose masculinity, THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD instead takes the opportunity to pound its chest at the Communist threat Capitalist America had come to fear during the Red Scare and continue to fight during the Cold War. With Finn, we talk about the movie's tendency to Other, its reliance on military might and imperialist common sense, and the mid-century shift in science fiction from fantastical, barely imaginable tales to a conservative, Earth-vs-outsiders worldview. 00h 00’00” Jerry’s ragtime 00h 00’53” Presentación 00h 02’47” Cabecera 00h 03’24” 1969 100 RIFLES 00h 03’24” Main title 00h 04’47” Escape and pursuit 00h 08’34” I’ll go back 00h 10’05” 1994 CUATRO MUJERES Y UN DESTINO (Bad girls) 00h 10’05” The John 00h 12’16” The hanging 00h 14’15” The snake 00h 15’29” My land – End credits 00h 22’12” 1968 BANDOLERO! 00h 22’12” Main title 00h 24’07” A bad day for hanging – The kidnap 00h 28’13” A better way 00h 31’54” 1975 NEVADA EXPRESS (Breakheart pass) 00h 31’54” Main title 00h 34’25” Free ride – Hot stove 00h 39’24” Reunited 00h 41’12” 1967 LA HORA DE LAS PISTOLAS (Hour of the gun) 00h 41’12” Main title 00h 46’22” The ballot box 00h 51’14” The search 00h 59’04” A friendly lie – End titles 01h 03’12” 1962 LOS VALIENTES ANDAN SOLOS (Lonely are the brave) 01h 03’12” Main title 01h 06’06” No surprise – Escape 01h 12’350” Wounded 01h 15’30” 1964 RIO CONCHOS 01h 15’30” Main title 01h 18’01” 1970 RIO LOBO 01h 18’01” Captured 01h 19’35” A good teacher – Quiet town – Cantina 01h 29’10” Plans – The raid 01h 36’06” 1966 HACIA LOS GRANDES HORIZONTES (Stagecoach) 01h 36’06” Main title 01h 38’34” A new passenger 01h 40’15” Family story 01h 44’46” 1975 POR LA SENDA MÁS DURA (Take a hard ride) 01h 44’46” Main title 01h 46’57” The wagon 01h 52’46” 1970 LA BALADA DE CABLE HOGUE (The ballad of Cable Hogue) 01h 52’46” Tomorrow is the song I sing – Richard Gillis 01h 56’44” Hasty Exit 01h 59’43” The guest 02h 02’42” EL POTRO ALAZÁN (The red pony) 02h 02’42” True love 02h 10’09” Father’s gift 02h 14’17” A helping hand 02h 17’40” 1971 DOS HOMBRES CONTRA EL OESTE (Wild rovers) 02h 17’40” Main title 02h 22’30” Wild horses 02h 25’57” Early morning – The wild rover – Ellen Smith

00h 00’00” Rawhide – Frankie Laine 00h 02’02” Presentación 00h 04’06” Cabecera 00h 04’41” 1946 DUELO AL SOL (Duel in the sun) 00h 04’41” Main title 00h 05’47” Duel in the sun – Larry Douglas 00h 08’50” Gotta get my somebody to love – Martha Tilton 00 h 11’48” Love eternal 00h 14’43” 1956 LA GRAN PRUEBA (Friendly persuasion) 00h 14’43” Main title, Little Jes & Samantha 00h 19’04” Carriage chase 00h 21’44” Love scene in the barn – Coax me a little – Thee I love 00h 27’08” 1956 GIGANTE (Giant) 00h 27’08” Main title & The hunt scene 00h 32’16” Love theme (There’s never been anyone else but you) 00h 34’00” Thoughts of Leslie 00h 36’04” 1957 DUELO DE TITANES (Gunfight at O.K. The battle for the Academy award for Best Original Song became a little more intense in 1954, as the film composer competed with the professional songwriter for control over who writes songs for the movies. Dimitri Tiomkin began the war after winning the Oscar for "The Ballad of High Noon" in 1952, with Sammy Cahn serving as his rival. Will it be Tiomkin's soaring title song from The High and the Mighty that wins in 1954, or Cahn's lush title song from Three Coins in the Fountain? Host Jeff Commings will tell you the stories behind these and the other nominees, and reveal the winner at the end of this episode of The Best Song Podcast.

In Great American Novel Podcast Episode 20, your fearless (or is it feckless) hosts find themselves in the damp swamps and thick scrublands of north central Florida in the post-Reconstruction era as we struggle to survive with the settlers of the brush country in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' Pulitzer Prize winning 1938 novel, The Yearling. We discuss how this Maryland native came to work with the editor of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Thomas Wolfe, and how she came to love the Florida brush country she wrote about.  As always, these discussions are operating according to the rules of literary criticism, or as Melville might have put it, there be spoilers here. The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture.  Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration.  Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter.  All opinions are their own and do not reflect the points of view of their employers, publishers, relatives, pets, or accountants. All show music is by Lobo Loco.  The intro song is “Old Ralley”; and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.”  For more information visit: https://locolobomusic.com/.  The theme to "Rawhide" was written by Ned Washington and Dimitri Tiomkin, 1958, performed by Frankie Laine.  Trailer for The Yearling, 1946, dir.

Distinguished author Steven C. Smith and composer & conductor William Stromberg discuss the lineage that connects John Williams and the great composers of the Golden Age of Hollywood, including Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner John Williams is the film composer who, more than any other, was able to take the great tradition of the Golden Age of Hollywood's film music and revive it for modern audiences. Thanks to the impressive box office success of such films as Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Superman, the late 1970s saw a resurgence of the classic symphonic film score as intended by the great composers of the Golden Age: Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Miklós Rózsa, Franz Waxman, were the forefathers of what is commonly referred as "the Hollywood sound", i.e. the lush, romantic orchestral vernacular in vogue during the 1930s, '40s and '50s, mostly based on the great tradition of Late Romantic symphonic music from Europe, of which all the aforementioned composers were all natural descendants. This type of vibrant, colorful and emotional musical accompaniment defined Hollywood's film music until the dramatic turn of the tide known as the end of the studio era in the early 1960s. John Williams restored almost single-handedly that tradition with a sincere, heartfelt homage to those musical stylings and a new renaissance of film music began. This is the starting point of this new episode of the Legacy Conversations series on The Legacy of John Williams podcast, featuring two very esteemed and distinguished special guests who are among the most respected authorities on the subject of classic film music: author Steven C. Smith and composer/conductor William T. Stromberg. Steven is an Emmy-nominated documentary producer, author, and speaker who specializes in Hollywood history and profiles of contemporary filmmakers. He is the author of two acclaimed biographies: Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood's Most Influential Composer (Oxford University Press), and A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann (University of California Press). William T. Stromberg is a respected composer and conductor working in the film music business since the late 1980s. Together with his artistic partner John W. Morgan, he produced an impressive amount of brand-new recordings of classic film scores from the Golden Age of Hollywood by Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin and other illustrious composers, including premiere complete recordings of such iconic scores as King Kong, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Fahrenheit 451, The Egyptian. The profound expertise and knowledge of both Steven C. Smith and William Stromberg make them the ideal guests to talk about the lineage that connects John Williams to the great tradition of the Golden Age of Hollywood's film music, especially to composers like Max Steiner and Bernard Herrmann. Synopsis Is the customer always right? Apparently Giuseppe Verdi thought so–to a degree, at least. On today’s date in 1872, Verdi sent a note to his publisher with an attached letter he had received from a disgruntled customer, a certain Prospero Bertani, who had attended not one, but two performances of Verdi’s brand-new opera, “Aida.” Bertani said, “I admired the scenery... I listened with pleasure to the excellent singers, and took pains to let nothing escape me. After it was over, I asked myself whether I was satisfied. The answer was ‘no’.” Since everyone else seemed to think “Aida” was terrific, Bertani attended a second performance to make sure he wasn’t mistaken, and concluded: “The opera contains absolutely nothing thrilling or electrifying. If it were not for the magnificent scenery, the audience would not sit through it.” Bertini itemized his expenses for tickets, train fare, and meals, and asked Verdi for reimbursement. Verdi was so amused that he instructed Ricordi to pay Bertani – but not the full amount, since, as Verdi put it: “…to pay for his dinner too? No! He could very well have eaten at home!” COMPOSERS DATEBOOK is produced by APM, American Public Media, in collaboration with the American Composers Forum, reminding you that "all music was once new."

It's rare to find a film from 75 years ago that feels relevant still in today's world, but Frank Capra's 1939 “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” is one of those films. Corruption in the Senate? Check. Corporate interests secretly working their own machinations behind the scenes to get their political puppets to do their bidding? Check. Cynical office staff who are only interested in making a buck? Check. Sad to say that the only thing that doesn't feel modern is that a politician like James Stewart's titular character could actually exist. Or at least survive in today's political world. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue with our great films from 1939 series with Capra's fantastic film “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” We talk about how much we love this film and why, highlighting everything aforementioned. We chat about Stewart and Jean Arthur as the perfect leads for this film, aided by the wonderful supporting cast including Edward Arnold, Harry Carey, Claude Rains, Thomas Mitchell and more. We discuss how the Washington, D.C. press and the real Senators received the film compared with the general public. And we discuss the people behind the cameras with Capra and what they bring to the table — Joseph Walker, Lionel Banks, Dimitri Tiomkin, Sidney Buchman, Lewis R. Foster and more. It's a top notch film that still speaks to its audiences, all while avoiding being cheesy while full of honesty. We love it. Make sure you watch this one and then tune in!
