As an artist and writer Wanda Gág is well known for her children’s books. Richard discusses the importance of balancing faith, family, finances, fitness, and friendships, and how these elements contribute to a fulfilling life. He emphasizes the need for business owners to create profitable and systemized businesses that allow for personal freedom and family time. The conversation also touches on the significance of exposing children to various experiences and the benefits of alternative education, including homeschooling. Richard advocates for a structured family dynamic where faith and family take precedence, ultimately leading to a more harmonious and productive life. In this conversation, Richard Walsh and Jey Young explore the biblical principles of family structure, the importance of love with standards, and the roles of mothers and fathers in raising children. They discuss the significance of community, the value of friendships, and the necessity of fitness and health in life. The conversation emphasizes the covenant of family and the responsibilities that come with it, urging listeners to seek wisdom and guidance in their parenting journey. Takeaways Richard faced catastrophic loss during the 2008 financial crisis. He emphasizes the importance of balancing five critical areas of life. Business owners often sacrifice family for the sake of their business. Creating a profitable and systemized business is essential for freedom. Family dynamics play a crucial role in business ownership. Exposure to various experiences is vital for children's growth. Homeschooling can provide tailored education for children. Faith should be prioritized above all else in family life. Order in family dynamics leads to a loving home. Entrepreneurship offers a path to freedom when done right. Biblical submission is about order and rank in relationships. True love involves compassion with standards. The family structure is essential for societal success. Mothers and fathers provide unique contributions to parenting. Community plays a vital role in child-rearing. Friendship quality matters more than quantity. Fitness and health are foundational to overall well-being. Fathers have a protective role in their families. The covenant of marriage is a three-way commitment with God. Seeking wisdom through prayer is crucial for personal growth. In this first of two episodes looking at Laurel and Hardy's classic 1929 talkie, Men O' War, Patrick chats with returning guest and Hal Roach Studios expert, Richard W. Bann about his forthcoming book 'Laurel & Hardy as Men O' War: Just Playing Together.' In addition to discussing the book's genesis and content, Richard reads an extract from the manuscript, which perfectly sets the scene and provides great context for what was happening in and around Hollywood in 1929. Man lernt voneinander. Content Advisory Warning: This week's episode contains disturbing themes of violence, including sexual violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Please use discretion when listening to this episode. Britney Daniels, nurse advocate and author of Journal of a Black Queer Nurse, is our guest host for this week's episode! A series of gruesome murders in the early 90s causes alarm within the LGBTQ+ community as it becomes apparent that middle-aged homosexual men are being targeted within the New York area. The case would remain unsolved for nearly a decade before a seemingly "average" appearing nurse was declared a suspect. We are excited to feature our guest host Britney as our Good Nurse! Britney shares how her journaling routine led to her becoming a published author, and how she was recognized by a peer as being a good nurse! Please support our show by supporting our sponsors below! Episode 31 completes our deep dive into Stan and Babe's 1929 masterpiece, Big Business. On the previous show, Episode 30, Randy Skretvedt and I discussed the film and also covered the mythology surrounding a couple of famous (or infamous) legends connected to the production - primarily Hal Roach's much-related tale that the wrong house was destroyed in error. Randy sided with Stan Laurel and thought that Hal's story was "a load of baloney". So, in this episode, I'm delighted to welcome back film historian and expert on the Hal Roach Studios, Richard W. Bann. Richard covers some little-known facts about Big Business, as well as laying out all the facts surrounding the 'wrong house' story. With both sides at our disposal, can we finally put this argument to bed once and for all? Své o tom ví Richard Wágner, dabér Jindřicha z české hry Kingdom Come, Alfieho ze seriálu Emily in Paris či Noela ze seriálu Shameless. Hood Terms of Endearment Pt 1 - Giving Back ft. Denzell T by Richard W, Jerrell M
It's no secret that the Black community tops the list of groups afflicted by hypertension, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, and cancer. What the statistics do not show is the pain, misery, and despair that these conditions create—not only for the individual, but also for family and friends. As an African-American doctor, Dr. Richard Walker has studied these conditions among his patients for many years. Now, in his new book, “Black Health Matters”, Dr. Walker offers a number of commonsense ways to prevent, manage, and possibly eliminate these killers, turning the tide of African-American health. And he not only provides us with a construct for thought leadership in population health equity, he practices this type of care at his home-based primary care practice TVP-Care in Houston, Texas. Dr. Walker has spent considerable time in researching the health and healthcare journey of African captives into slavery and understands what current African Americans now to need to do to survive nutritionally and culturally. He is truly on a mission to overcome the chronic ill health and early death that is so pervasive in Black communities. Most importantly, however, Dr. Walker is a leader in the value movement that believes traditional medicine should be merged with lifestyle medicine. He understands that African Americans can turn their health around by understanding and incorporating better nutrition, nutritional supplements, exercise, and regular healthcare checkups into their lives. In this important podcast discussion, we you will learn from a leading clinician and entrepreneur how we should go about improving Population Health Equity within African American communities in this Race to Value! Episode Bookmarks: 01:30 Introduction to “Black Health Matters” and the work of Dr. Richard Walker in the health value movement 03:30 What does the use of the word “value” mean when it comes to community health? 05:00 Dr. Walker discusses his upbringing in Spanish Harlem and how that experience led him to become a physician leader seeking to advance health equity 07:00 The “mystery” of excessive hospitalizations due to sugar consumption and how that led to an epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes in the African American community 09:00 The misperception in the African American community that most common chronic diseases are genetic (instead of caused by environmental of lifestyle factors) 10:00 Dismantling the informational disadvantage that leads to a misunderstanding of Social Determinants of Health 12:00 The impact of the murder of George Floyd and the BLM social justice movement and how that inspired Dr. Walker to write “Black Health Matters” 14:30 How the collective experience of African Americans over the last 400+ years has been based on “waiting” (e.g. slavery, citizenship, civil rights) 16:00 “Taking care of your own life is all about taking charge of the environment by understanding the root causes that lead to disease.” 16:30 How poor nutrition in the African American community stems from the slavery era and persists to this day 17:30 The inadequate training of the healthcare workforce further exacerbates preexisting issues of poor health among African Americans 18:30 “Black Health Matters” is all about understanding the progenitors of chronic disease that are not genetic, and how to mitigate them in African American communities. 19:00 Environmental hazards and chemical toxicities are more common in underserved, minoritized communities 20:30 Research that confirms the presence of systemic issues in the healthcare industry related to institutional racism 22:00 “The concept of value-based care is transformational because it has the potential of changing the course in healthcare by recognizing the true value of the individual.” 23:30 Will value-based care bring us to the “Quintuple Aim” that includes health equity? 24:30 How the founding vision of Dr. Walker's value-based,

Henry McCarty, aka William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid, is one of the most well known figures from the American West. His short life made an outsized impact on American folklore and popular culture, and his story has been told and retold for a century and a half after his death. In Thunder in the West: The Life and Legends of Billy the Kid (U Oklahoma Press, 2020), historian Richard Etulain, emeritus professor at the University of New Mexico, tackles both the real life story and the ever-changing legend of Billy the Kid. From his largely unknown early life to the critical year of 1878 to his death at the hands of Pat Garret in 1881, Etulain explains both the life and the context of Billy, and spends an equal amount of time on the young mans afterlife. In novels and movies, Billy's story lives on to the present day, a tale of romance, youth, and violence that maintains its tragic appeal. Half academic monograph and half narrative romp, Thunder in the West is bifurcated into two equally important sections, much like Billy the Kid himself. Dr. Stephen R. Hausmann is an assistant professor of history at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Learn more about your ad choices.
