“I just had the unpleasant sensation of hearing you referred to as my husband.” – It Happened One Night (1934)This week, returning guest Andrew Daniels joins us to break down the original screwball sensation: Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. As the first film to ever sweep the “Big Five” Oscars, this charming romantic comedy set the template for the genre, with pitch-perfect performances from Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and enough innuendo, wit, and roadside bickering to fuel decades of imitators. We explore how Capra's Depression-era romance struck a chord with audiences, changed the course of Hollywood stardom, and remains as irresistibly funny and tender today as it was in 1934.Episode Notes:It Happened One Night (1934) was directed by Frank Capra and stars Clark Gable and Claudette ColbertSelected to the National Film Registry in 1993First film to win all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and ScreenplayNotable for:Launching the screwball comedy genreIconic scenes like the hitchhiking lesson and the “walls of Jericho”Bridging escapism and social commentary during the Great DepressionDiscussion topics include:The film's influence on romantic comedies for generationsHow it reshaped the public personas of Gable and ColbertCapra's blend of populist ideals and sharp dialogueWhy the film continues to resonate with modern audiencesFeaturing returning guest:Andrew Daniels, author of The Barstool Book of Sports: Stats, Stories, and Other Stuff for Drunken Debate Follow the Show:TwitterInstagramWebsite Music by Mike Natale

It has been a fortnight and more since Paul Burns has been our guest on the Gaming News Canada Show. So given the various happenings around the Canadian gambling industry since his last appearance at the beginning of 2025, we asked Paul Burns to join us once again. With apologies to the late James Stewart and Frank Capra, Mr. Burns went to Ottawa earlier this month for the Council of Europe Workshop on the Macolin Convention gathering, which included panel conversations featuring the CGA head honcho, Dave Phillips and Doug Hood from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and Sportradar's integrity services lead Jim Brown weighing in on the province's regulated sports betting industry's work to combat match fixing. During our conversation, Burns told us that the collaboration between the AGCO, licensed sportsbooks, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders means “the regime is working”. We also asked Burns for some thoughts and layers on three years of open, regulated sports wagering and igaming in Ontario and what's to come in Year 4, and the introduction of the iGaming Alberta Act by the ruling UCP party into the provincial legislature in the land of oil, gas and Connor McDavid. He also delivered an early look at what will take place during the June 17-19 Canadian Gaming Summit in the city below Caledon. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Chris and Alex are back in the warm embrace of Pixar Animation Studio, looking at their tenth computer animated film Up (Pete Docter, 2009) - a real high point in the company's run of critically and commercially successful animated features, and a film that comes almost at the midway point between Pixar today their debut with Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995) 30 years ago. To discuss whether adventure really is ‘out there,' Chris and Alex are joined by special guest Dr Tom Brown, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Kings College London. Tom is the author of the monographs Spectacle in “Classical” Cinemas: Musicality and Historicity in the 1930s (2016) and Breaking the Fourth Wall: Direct Address in the Cinema (2012), as well as co-editor of The Biopic in Contemporary Film Culture (2014), Film Moments: Criticism, History, Theory (2010) and Film and Television After DVD (2008). Topics for this episode include how Pixar's computer-animated work can be understood according to a “classical” register via its meaningful construction and solidity of animated space; computer-animated staging and how meaning is carried in the studio's expressive use of mise-en-scène; Up as a stylistic ‘sweet spot' between photorealism and caricature; links between Pixar and both Classical Hollywood filmmakers like Frank Capra and the category of the middlebrow; what it means to be imprisoned by time in fantasy storytelling; and what Up's particular combination of the silly and the profound has to say about the weight of grief. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Karina Longworth's You Must Remember This podcast needs no introduction for her erudite, wildly popular considerations of Hollywood film history, and in her latest season of episodes, she looks at the late-career work of major directors through a variety of lenses. I was delighted to welcome Longworth to the latest episode of The Last Thing I Saw to discuss her selection of filmmakers and their often idiosyncratic later works, including Frank Capra, Stanley Donen, John Ford, Otto Preminger, and William Wyler. She also makes a pick or two of contemporary directors we might consider in their twilight today... The Best Picture Showcase rolls on with Edward Berger's CONCLAVE, a drama about the election of a new Pope after the sudden death of the old Holy Father. Left with the responsibilities of wrangling every cardinal from 'round the world, along with their egos and ideologies, is a soon-to-be-exhausted Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes). As the days and rounds of voting wear on, Lawrence fears, especially after the muckraking dredges up personal and professional drama, a wealth of spiritual doubts and a fear of what kind of person will spearhead the next few decades of Catholicism, that the right candidate, the one truly best equipped to be an ambassador of God's word, may be lost to the squabbles and pettiness of imperfect men. This is a chess game, political theater on the world's stage. In some ways, CONCLAVE is brutally honest about the state of the world and its leaders. In others, I find an idealism that Frank Capra may grin at, god rest him. It's this balance between recognizing who we are and where we'd like to be that CONCLAVE dances with the most. How do we bridge the gulf and who's best equipped to lead us there? If you play enough chess, you'll be able to see the winning route from a good distance and this movie is no exception. But Berger always has a good eye and the score sufficiently ramps up the tension. It's not my favorite nominee but I'm glad I saw it.---Please rate, review and subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Bluesky & Instagram: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

Joseph McBride is a film historian and a professor in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University. He is the author of biographies of Frank Capra, John Ford, and Steven Spielberg; three books on Orson Welles; and critical studies of Ernst Lubitsch, Billy Wilder, and the Coen Brothers. He acted for Welles in The Other Side of the Wind and has won a Writers Guild of America award. His latest book is called "George Cukor's People: Acting for a Master Director" (Columbia University Press, 2025). The director of classic films such as "Sylvia Scarlett", "The Philadelphia Story", "Gaslight", "Adam's Rib", "A Star Is Born", and "My Fair Lady", George Cukor is widely admired but often misunderstood. Reductively stereotyped in his time as a woman's director—a thinly veiled, disparaging code for gay—he brilliantly directed a wide range of iconic actors and actresses, including Cary Grant, Greta Garbo, Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, and Maggie Smith. As Katharine Hepburn, the star of ten Cukor films, told the director, “All the people in your pictures are as goddamned good as they can possibly be, and that's your stamp.”

A word or mantra for the year? No? Well, you're in luck. We're here to help with that by way of four movie recommendations. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)First up is the 1986 John Hughes comedy classic, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The real righteous dudes in the audience will know why this film has a great movie mantra, but if you don't, you're in luck! We'll tell you all about it in today's show. Galaxy Quest (1999)Next is the 1999 love letter to Star Trek, Galaxy Quest. This comedy is a wonderful send-up of classic Star Trek, but is also a fascinating meta-commentary on stardom, fandom, and geek culture. By Grabthar's Hammer, you best pick this one up for another fantastic movie mantra. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)Frank Capra's 1946 film, It's a Wonderful Life, is a timeless Christmas classic, but it's got one of the best movie mantras in history. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Henry Travers, and Lionel Barrymore, this drama still rings true today and is worth watching as we start the new year. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)We close our movie mantras this week with another comedy, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. While yes, the tagline reads, “History's about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell,” this is a comedy that still writes a wonderful movie mantra. Filled with cameos from comedians, rock stars, and more, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a delightful sci-fi comedy. Strange things will be afoot at the Video Store if you don't pick this one up. Surprise...it's a bonus episode! Have You Ever Seen #634 is another Ryan solo show. And in it, the monologue is about baseball players, journalists and a lot of liars. Meet John Doe's climax also takes place on Christmas Eve, so Frank Capra's rabble-rouser is timely in that way. It's unfortunate his speech-filled dramedy isn't funnier though, even if it's certainly inspirational. Gary Cooper plays a homeless man who isn't actually suicidal or an idealist, but Barbara Stanwyck had written a newspaper column saying he is...so they run with that lie. Meet John Doe ends up being populist v tycoon (a tycoon who highjacks the movement for his own ends) with a country galvanized by a forgotten man saying all the right things...even if he started out as a fraud. The director of classic films such as Sylvia Scarlett, The Philadelphia Story, Gaslight, Adam's Rib, A Star Is Born, and My Fair Lady, George Cukor is widely admired but often misunderstood. Reductively stereotyped in his time as a "woman's director"-a thinly veiled, disparaging code for "gay"-he brilliantly directed a wide range of iconic actors and actresses, including Cary Grant, Greta Garbo, Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, and Maggie Smith. As Katharine Hepburn, the star of ten Cukor films, told the director, "All the people in your pictures are as goddamned good as they can possibly be, and that's your stamp." In this groundbreaking, lavishly illustrated critical study, Joseph McBride provides insightful and revealing essayistic portraits of Cukor's actors in their most memorable roles. The queer filmmaker gravitated to socially adventurous, subversively rule-breaking, audacious dreamers who are often sexually transgressive and gender fluid in ways that seem strikingly modern today. McBride shows that Cukor's seemingly self-effacing body of work is characterized by a discreet way of channeling his feelings through his actors. He expertly cajoled actors, usually gently but sometimes with bracing harshness, to delve deeply into emotional areas they tended to keep safely hidden. Cukor's wry wit, his keen sense of psychological and social observation, his charm and irony, and his toughness and resilience kept him active for more than five decades in Hollywood. George Cukor's People: Acting for a Master Director (Columbia UP, 2024) gives him the in-depth, multifaceted examination his rich achievement deserves. Welcome back to Constellation, the podcast that reminds you that there's so much in life to be grateful for! This week, Lockmort gets the conversation started with a discussion about the seemingly never ending glut of Disney remakes that we' ve all grown accustomed to over the past decade. As the controversial 'Snow White' live-action movie now looms on the horizon, we are once again reminded of the Mouse House's tendency to recreate their older franchises instead of inventing brand new characters and stories. Do we think it stinks? Next, the Dagster wants to speak with the gang about good ol' fashioned chivalry and what these ancient codes of conduct mean to us now in our modern world. Is helping old ladies across the street and holding doors for our fellow man still relevant today, and how has chivalry evolved since the days of old-timey gentlemen and virtuous knights? Last, Matty leads the crew in their reflections of 2024. As we prepare to close out another year, how do we look back on the last 12 months, and what are we looking forward to most in 2025? It's that wonderful time of the year: sweater weather, hot chocolate, and watching killers incorporate Christmas knick-knacks to create festive kills! We had the pleasure of sitting down with Angele (Belles of Horror) to chat about these five films that made things merry and bloody! Whether you're a horror fanatic or just looking to spice up your holiday movie lineup, these films deliver chills and cheer in equal measure. 1. A Christmas Horror Story (2015) A chilling anthology that intertwines multiple Christmas-themed tales of terror, featuring everything from zombie elves to a Krampus showdown with Santa Claus. Why Watch: The seamless blend of humor and horror, topped with William Shatner as a radio DJ narrating the chaos, makes this a holiday must-watch. 2. A Wonderful Knife (2023) This darkly comedic slasher is an homage to the Frank Capra classic as it reimagines Christmas cheer with a sharp edge, where the season of giving turns into a season of survival Why Watch: It's like a Hallmark Christmas movie got lost in a slasher film—unexpected, gory, and oddly heartwarming. 3. Krampus (2015) When a dysfunctional family loses their holiday spirit, they summon the wrath of Krampus, the terrifying anti-Santa of folklore, and learn the true/terrifying meaning of Christmas. Why Watch: The mix of practical effects, dark humor, and a wonderful cast creates a modern holiday horror classic. 4. Violent Night (2022) Santa Claus himself takes up arms to save a family held hostage on Christmas Eve in this action-packed thrill ride. Why Watch: Ever wondered what would happen if Santa went full John Wick? This film answers that question with hilarious and bloody results. 5. Gremlins (1984) What starts out as a charming and furry Christmas gift quickly turns into chaos when mischievous creatures run amok in a small town. Why Watch: A nostalgic blend of horror and comedy, Gremlins is the ultimate Christmas creature feature that still holds up decades later. So, grab some eggnog, cozy up by the fire, and join us as we explore the darker, wilder side of Christmas movies. This episode will have you laughing, screaming, and appreciating the holiday spirit in ways you never expected. And yes, Canada is mentioned…a lot.
