EPISODE 129 -  “FRANK LOVEJOY: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 3/02/2026  I think many people know that one of our favorite films is In a Lonely Place (1950). Directed by NICHOLAS RAY, this film noir is the tragic story of a love affair unraveling at the hands of doubt and distrust. It stars HUMPHREY BOGART and GLORIA GRAHAME in roles that would be career-defining. However, adding quiet strength to the film is FRANK LOVEJOY, who played Brub Nicolai, Bogart's ex-army buddy turned private investigator. In the film, Lovejoy is not flashy, nor does he attempt to steal scenes, but he is so solid, so decent — he becomes the moral compass and Greek Chorus that helps define the narrative. What was so wonderful about Lovejoy was just how ordinary he was. He was Everyman. Square-jawed, no-nonsense, he looked like your Dad, or your uncle, or your local butcher. He wouldn't stand out in a crowd, but he brought such humanity and decency to every role he performed. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his face. So this week, we are going to dive into the life and career of FRANK LOVEJOY, an unsung hero of classic cinema, and our Star of the Month SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IBDB.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned: Black Bart (1948), starring Yvonne DeCarlo & Dan Duryea; Home of the Brave (1949), starring James Edwards & Lloyd Bridges; In A Lonely Place (1950), starring Humphrey Bogart & Gloria Grahame; South Sea Sinner (1950), starring MacDonald Carey & Shelley Winters; Three Secrets (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Patricia Neal, and Ruth Roman; Breakthrough (1950), starring John Agar & David Brian;  The Sound of Fury (1950), starring Frank Lovejoy, Kathleen Ryan, & Richard Carlson' Goodbye My Fancy (1951), starring Joan Crawford & Robert Young; Force of Arms (1951), starring Wiliam Holden & Nancy Olson; I'll See You In My Dreams (1951), starring Doris Day & Danny Thomas; Starlift (1951), starring Gary Cooper & Doris Day; I Was A Communist For The FBI (1951), starring Frank Lovejoy & Dorothy Hart; Retreat, Hell! (Orig. Pub Date: 11/10/21) In January of 1923, a 20-year-old dancer named Fritzie Mann left home to meet a mysterious man for what she told her mother was a house party. When she was discovered dead on a remote beach a few miles north of San Diego, police were puzzled by the clues. Was it an accident, suicide, or murder? The fact that she was pregnant deepened the mystery even further. Soon two men – a Hollywood actor and a doctor – became the primary suspects in the case, and one would eventually be put on trial for murder. My guest is James Stewart, author of “Mystery at the Blue Sea Cottage: A True Story of Murder in San Diego's Jazz Age”. He shares details about strange death of Fritzie Mann, considered by some to be San Diego's very own Black Dahlia, and offers intriguing theories on what might really have happened to her. In this thrilling episode of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson recounts an adventure that takes place on Guy Fawkes Day. The story begins with the historical significance of the day and transitions into a mysterious visit from Mr. James Stewart, who fears for his life due to threats from his cousin. As Holmes investigates, they uncover a plot involving gunpowder and a sinister plan to murder Mr. Stewart. The narrative unfolds with suspenseful twists, leading to a dramatic climax on the rooftops of London, where the true intentions of the characters are revealed. The episode concludes with reflections on the events and the enduring legacy of the Gunpowder Plot. Most mysteries stem from simple ideas—like a childhood joke or a familiar name. But what if that childhood prank spirals into a deadly, elaborate plot involving a tunnel, stolen dummies, and a century-old conspiracy? Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson unravel a twisted murder scheme that combines Guy Fawkes' historic gunpowder plot with modern-day danger—right on Guy Fawkes Day.In this gripping episode, you'll discover how a secret tunnel and staged disguises nearly turned into a catastrophe. Holmes leverages his legendary attention to detail, unpicking clues like a silk strip with a wire ring and a fake dummy to expose a murderer's carefully crafted revenge plot. We break down the deliberate use of historical symbolism, with ties to the 1605 gunpowder conspiracy, revealing how ancient plots influence contemporary crime. We explore Holmes' unique methods: turning disguises into investigative tools, utilizing the Baker Street Irregulars effectively, and decoding symbolic gestures—like Falconby's falconry-themed accessories—that unveil the truth. Dr. Watson offers insights into his own experience of the case, revealing how Holmes' deduction skills turn seemingly insignificant clues into life-saving revelations. Why does it matter? Neglecting the nuances of disguise, symbolism, and historical context leaves vital evidence undiscovered—making crimes easier for cunning villains to pull off. Holmes' approach demonstrates the importance of patience, knowledge, and a detective's instinct to see beyond the surface—transforming suspicion into certainty.Perfect for fans of clever mysteries, historical intrigue, and masterful deduction, this episode highlights why Holmes remains the ultimate detective. Whether you're a casual listener or a devoted sleuth, you'll walk away with tricks to sharpen your own investigative skills—and a new appreciation for the timeless art of deduction.Join us as Holmes exposes a deadly game where history repeats itself—reminding us that some treason and plots are never forgotten, only reshaped by those who dare to repeat them. Don't miss this unforgettable journey into mystery, history, and Holmes' brilliant mind.TakeawaysThe significance of Guy Fawkes Day in British history. The clever use of historical references in the plot.Holmes's analytical approach to solving mysteries. The theme of betrayal among family members. The cleverness of the murder plot involving gunpowder. The importance of quick thinking in dangerous situations. The role of disguises in the investigation. The use of children as spies in the story. The dramatic climax on the rooftops of London. The lasting impact of historical events on modern storytelling.Sherlock Holmes, Guy Fawkes, mystery, adventure, gunpowder plot, James Stewart, murder, detective, classic radio, storytelling

Join Alex and film studies professor Daniel Kieckhefer as they explore the deeper meaning in Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Vertigo (1958). The film stars James Stewart as a boyish former SFPD detective, haunted by a near-death experience that leaves him with extreme vertigo. He's called on as a private detective to investigate a woman, played by Kim Novak, who is seemingly possessed by a dead relative. This paper-thin mystery (as the critics at the time called it) is not what Hitchcock wanted audiences to pay attention to, however; as Daniel explains, this is classic Freudian Oedipal complex. The duo explore the explanation from a historical lens, both from a filmmaking and a clinical psychology perspective. It's pretty clear that obsession is the concept to focus on, but its really what the true object of that obsession that is up for debate! There was agreement that Stewart played a really creepy dude and in no way was he the good guy of this story. What makes Batavia "Batavia"? We often talk about our town's identity as if it's a permanent fixture—a "vibe" we inherited. But a closer look at our history reveals that our reputation for being on the "right side of history" wasn't an accident or a guarantee. It was a series of individual and cultural habits. In this episode, I sit down with Kate Garrett, Director of the Batavia Depot Museum, to trace the lineage of Batavia's civic character. From the radical abolitionist roots of the 1840s to the fair housing battles of the 1960s, we explore how Batavia has chosen a path of belonging (and where Batavia wavered)—and why that choice is more fragile than we think.Pictured in the cover art is B. C. Yates, the anti-slavery Kane County Sheriff who won election in 1848 with support of the Liberty Party, James Stewart, whose father was the first Black person to own property in Batavia and who was a Civil War veteran of the USCT 29th, and the Congregational Church, where the original Kane County Anti-Slavery Society was formed. It's a conversation about censorship, masculinity, truth versus storytelling, and how a supposedly “old” movie still punches harder than most modern courtroom dramas. Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life is one of the best-loved films of Classical Hollywood cinema, a story of despair and redemption in the aftermath of war that is one of the central movies of the 1940s, and a key text in America's understanding of itself. This is a film that remains relevant to our own anxieties and yearnings, to all the contradictions of ordinary life, while also enacting for us the quintessence of the classic Hollywood aesthetic. Nostalgia, humour, and a tough resilience weave themselves through this movie, intertwining it with the fraught cultural moment of the end of World War II that saw its birth. It offers a still compelling merging of fantasy and realism that was utterly unique when it was first released, and has rarely been matched since. Michael Newton's study of the film, It's a Wonderful Life (British Film Institute, 2023), investigates the source of its extraordinary power and its long-lasting impact. He begins by introducing the key figures in the movie's production - notably director Frank Capra and star James Stewart - and traces the making of the film, and then provides a brief synopsis of the film, considering its aesthetic processes and procedures, touching on all those things that make it such an astonishing film. Newton's careful analysis explores all those aspects of the film that are fundamental to our understanding of it, particularly the way in which the film brings tragedy and comedy together. Finally, Newton tells the story of the film's reception and afterlife, accounting for its initial relative failure and its subsequent immense popularity. Michael Newton is Lecturer in English at Leiden University, Netherlands. He is the author of Savage Girls and Wild Boys: A History of Feral Children (2002), Age of Assassins: A History of Conspiracy and Political Violence, 1865-1981 (2012), and of Kind Hearts and Coronets (2003) and Rosemary's Baby (2020) in the BFI Film Classics series. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss America's everyman and one of its most indelible movie stars: James Stewart! Our returning guest is our dear friend Mitchell Beaupre, Head of Editorial at Letterboxd and our B-Sides today include Vivacious Lady, You Gotta Stay Happy, No Highway in the Sky, The Far Country, and Fools' Parade. We debate what it is exactly that made Stewart so relatable and endearing to millions, we marvel at his WWII service and how it affected his on-screen demeanor, and we acknowledge that even though he starred in dozens of westerns most people still remember him better as George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life. Mitchell, Conor, and I discuss the incredible films he made with Anthony Mann, the late pictures he made with Andrew V. McLaglen, and the early starring roles in his career. We also mention how he was one of the most reliable box office stars over decades, a legendary ladies man in his younger days, and a staunch conservative throughout his life. There's also the already-infamous trailer for the forthcoming James Stewart biopic. Wow, does it look bad! Listen below and subscribe here.
