Bombardment intensifies in Gaza as Israel strikes shelter and home Israel's latest raids in Gaza have left three more Palestinians dead and several others wounded, bringing the death toll during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr to 13. Air strikes hit a shelter in Deir al-Balah and an evacuated home in Khan Younis, while artillery and naval fire added to the casualties. Witnesses report intense Israeli bombardment across northern and southern Gaza, signaling escalating violence. Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has killed over 50,400 Palestinians and has wounded over 114,500 since October 2023, according to figures released by the Palestinian Health Ministry in the enclave. Taiwan scrambles defenses as China conducts large-scale drills Tensions skyrocket as China encircles Taiwan with extensive military drills, simulating precision strikes and a blockade. Taiwan responded by scrambling aircraft and ships, deploying missile systems in the region. The Chinese drills follow US pledges to bolster deterrence in the region, with Washington calling Beijing's actions "aggressive." The European Union has urged restraint, while tensions between China and Taiwan, fueled by history and geopolitics, remain a potential flashpoint. US lawmaker delivers longest Senate speech to protest Trump US Senator Cory Booker made history with the longest speech in Senate history, delivering a fiery 25-hour, five-minute protest against President Donald Trump's “unconstitutional” actions. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we are so back! Back on the campaign trail that is!! Yes, there's now a full-blown federal election across Canada and to kick things off on this show, we're going to talk about the opening moves by party leaders, the opening faux pas by a provincial leader, and how this election is going to look very different for all the voters in the Royal City no matter what riding they're in (?). This Thursday, March 27, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: April Election Showers. Wrapping up his first couple of weeks as Prime Minister, Mark Carney decided that he's done everything he needed to do get the party election ready and visited the Governor General to start one. The date is April 28, and the first five days of the campaign have already been action-packed; from questions about conflicts of interest and potential election interference, plus the efficacy of Canada's third-tier political parties. What should we make of Campaign 2025: Week #1? Ms. Smith Goes to Florida. As we're going to air, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is going to the Sunshine State. Again. Florida is ground zero for the MAGA movement, and Smith has been spending a lot of time there, but it's her recent appearance on a Breitbart podcast that not only has people calling her out for siding so blatantly with Donald Trump, but wounding the Conservative Party's first few days on the campaign trail in the process. So is Smith helping or hindering the Team Canada effort? Now Twice the Guelph. It may surprise you to learn that depending on where you live in Guelph, you may not actually be in the federal riding of Guelph. Yes, the City of Guelph is now spread between the ridings of Guelph and Wellington-Halton Hills North, so that means you may have an entirely different set of candidates to vote for than your friends and neighbours. To wrap up, we're going to talk about the two Guelph ridings, their candidates, and the political considerations for the voters there. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

And Smith says she expects him to make good on his threats. Canadian leaders are preparing lists of retaliatory measures. Also: “Closer than ever.” Reports suggest a ceasefire agreement in Gaza could be signed before Trump takes office next week. Dana and Tom with 5x Club member, Sarah Duncan, and new guest, Brian Skutle (Film critic, podcaster, composer, host of Sonic Cinema, projector fixer) discuss Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for its 85th anniversary: directed by Frank Capra, written by Sidney Buchman and Myles Connelly, music by Dmitri Tiomkin, starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, and Edward Arnold.Plot Summary: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a classic tale of idealism clashing with the gritty realities of political power. Jimmy Stewart stars as Jefferson Smith, a naive but well-intentioned small-town man thrust into the unforgiving world of Washington politics after being unexpectedly appointed to the U.S. Senate. Smith, with his earnest love for American principles, soon finds himself entangled in a web of corruption and power-play, where his sincere belief in doing the right thing is dismissed as foolish by hardened senators. What follows is a story of resilience, where Stewart's character battles not only for a cause but for his very soul. Director Frank Capra lets his protagonist shine during a famous filibuster scene, in which Stewart's quivering intensity speaks volumes about the weight of standing up to corruption. While Capra's romanticized view of democracy is apparent, he tempers it with a frankness about the ugliness of the political machine—a balance that resonates even decades later. It's a movie as much about Smith's journey as it is about a society's idealism and its power to confront, and perhaps even mend itself.Chapters:00:00 Welcome and Introduction to Our Guests01:38 Getting to Know - Brian Skutle05:56 Cast and Recognition for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington09:39 Why This Movie?12:21 Relationship(s) with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington15:04 What is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington About?19:57 Is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Outdated?22:56 Plot Summary for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington24:30 Did You Know?26:51 First Break28:29 What's Happening with Sarah and Brian31:10 Ask Dana Anything39:23 Best Performance(s)53:16 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:05:32 Second Break01:06:14 In Memoriam01:08:31 Best/Funniest Lines01:11:09 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:19:01 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:24:16 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:28:46 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:34:11 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:37:52 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:38:58 Remaining Questions for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington01:44:18 Thank You to Our Guests01:45:57 CreditsGuests:Sarah Duncan - Sister of Tom, Daughter of Dana@thenomadicarchaeologist on IGPrevious Episodes: Zodiac, My Fair Lady, The Artist, Inglourious Basterds, The Great Dictator, and

Today's great political film is Frank Capra's Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939), a much-loved tale of the little guy taking on the corrupt establishment. But there's far more to it than that, including an origin story that suggests Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) might not be what he seems. From filibusters to fascism, from the New Deal to America First, from Burton K. Wheeler to Harry S. Truman, this is a heart-warming film that still manages to go to the dark heart of American politics. To hear our bonus episode on Philip Roth's The Plot Against America (in which Burton K. The September Movie of the Month was chosen by James Wilson of "Blogging by Cinema Light". His choice of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" comes after three previous attempts with narrow losses. This week was no competition and James hosts the show. He is joined by Damien Riley of "Riley on Film" and also by Matthew Simpson from "The Awesome Friday Podcast". Mr. Smith is one of the ten nominees for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, from 1939, a year that is considered the greatest in American Film History. Two of the people on this week's episode are veterans of the film, but the other two saw it for the first time this week. Come listen to us talk about this Classic film and why it is timeless and essential.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee calls the newest installment of the God's Not Dead film series a story made for this moment in history. He says it's a little like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington updated to this modern age where faith in God is not as publicly proclaimed and religious freedom totters in the wake of Woke political agendas. Huckabee plays himself in the film, and on this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, he jokes about getting his Oscar speech ready. But in all seriousness, this film, subtitled "In God We Trust", is meant to inspire millions of Christians, especially the 40 million who sat out last election, to make their voices heard at the ballot box this November. He says every vote counts. He also talks about why he, as an Evangelical Christian, still supports former President Donald Trump, and why even now, sees him as the best candidate to lead America... and why Kamala Harris is not. In Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, when a scrappy crew of kids tries to save America to get the truth out about a corrupt businessman, the businessman swarms the state with pamphlets, newspapers, parades, radio broadcasts to maintain his power. Controlling the narrative sometimes just means out-talking your opponent, and many of our most pernicious new media stars just overproduced content until they rose to the top: Twitch streaming leftists, podcast bros, Mr. Beast endurance videos. Now we have the IDF livestreaming war crimes and bots out-posting the victims of a celebrity's sexual assaults to take over search results. Nico and Jessa discuss the culture of chronic posting and asks where is the CIA when you need them? For show notes and references: http://theculturewedeserve.substack.com

Jessa and Nico watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and read Nancy Pelosi's new memoir to talk about the two archetypes of American public service, the aw shucks good guy versus the professional power player. But after Obama and the bailouts of the big banks, is it even possible to have hope anymore? Show notes and references: http://theculturewedeserve.substack.com

This is the first of two episodes where we look at a pair of films that don't have a ton in common with one another, but instead have created some cultural ripples that haven't always had a positive effect. We begin with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), the first time we've ever gone to the 1939 well after more than 140 films reviewed. This film, directed by Frank Capra, stars James Stewart as a rather naive young man who finds himself at the center of a political storm. Stick around for Part 2, when we talk about The Accidental Tourist. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing our "help me with my homework" theme by talking about the political epic drama Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). This is the first film of the podcast I have given a perfect score to. I gave this movie a 10/10 for combining incredible concept, with genius level script writing, academy award worthy acting, and impressive cinematography and set design. I cannot recommend this film enough. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/

Not to be confused with the 1936 Frank Capra movie "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" or the 1939 Frank Capra movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", this 2002 Adam Sandler comedy is one of the many Sandler movies that dominated the early 2000's comedy film industry. Winona Ryder, who is on a bit of a popular decline, practices her comedy chops and keeps up with the hilarious slap stick humor this movie thrives on.

There were 2 big coaching moves yesterday with Pete Carroll being relieved of his coaching duties in Seattle and Nick Saban retiring. Carroll was the Jets Head Coach when Boomer was there and he ‘loved every minute of it'. Seattle said he will be in an ‘advisory role' now but it sure sounds like Carroll wants to keep coaching. Boomer is not shocked by Saban retiring, considering the transfer portal and NIL. Which is why we also think Jim Harbaugh will jump to the NFL. This is going to continue to chase great coaches out of college football and basketball. Gio said no big name coaches are going to Carolina because of owner David Tepper. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about Craig Carton being in the building yesterday to tape, ‘Hello, My Name is Craig'. Boomer said he's looking a little thick. Jerry has audio of Stephen A. Smith going all in on Jason Whitlock. Pat McAfee is ‘pumped' that Aaron Rodgers is no longer appearing on the show until next season. Jerry has audio from Pete Carroll as he met the media and he's ‘freaking jacked'. Jerry thinks the Chargers should hire him. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the best head coaching jobs open including college. Gio compared living and coaching in a beautiful city compared to living here in January. Boomer said the Rose Bowl is the most beautiful stadium in all of football.
It's another edition of “Trump's Trials and Tribulations,” recorded on Thursday before a live audience of Lawfare Material Supporters. This week, Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes sat down with Lawfare Senior Editor Roger Parloff, Lawfare Legal Fellow Anna Bower, and special guest Steve Vladeck from the University of Texas School of Law. They discussed Jack Smith's petition to the Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari “before judgment” on the question of presidential immunity. They talked about the Court's decision to weigh in on Fischer v. United States and the potential impact on Trump's criminal cases and the other Jan. 6 cases that involved the same statute. They talked about whether Trump's trial in D.C. will be delayed by the Supreme Court's consideration of the immunity question. They talked about the status of the civil suit by Georgia election workers against Rudy Giuliani, and they checked in to see what is new in Fulton County. This is a live conversation that happens online every Thursday at 4:00pm Eastern Time. The last eighteen months or so of Jada Pinkett Smith's life have been… well, complicated. But complicated is nothing new for the multi-hyphenate who now hosts Red Table Talk and has a new book, Worthy, her gripping memoir tracing her origins in Baltimore to her throne as reigning queen of refusing to fit into anyone's idea of who she should be. Pinkett Smith shares her perspective as a young girl from her grandmother's garden, as a young woman at Baltimore School of the Arts, where one of her closest friends was Tupac Shakur, and as a starlet in the heady 1990s heyday of opportunity for Black actresses. Her exhilarating highs came with devastating lows; Pinkett Smith has shared openly about her depression and even suicidal ideation–in this wide-ranging interview, Pinkett Smith opens up about coming through those dark times, falling in, out, and in another kind of love with her life partner Will Smith, and, yes, her take on “The Holy Slap.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
