This week I sat down with Mark Lipton who I met when he was the Department Chair of my graduate program in Organizational Change Management at The New School. He has since moved on to Professor Emeritus status, which has freed him up to consult with Fortune 500 companies and write awesome books, so be sure to check out Guiding Growth: How Vision Keeps Companies on Course and the award-winning Mean Men: The Perversion of America's Self-Made Man.  I learned that Mark and I had all kinds of things in common in this episode. For example, we bonded over the fact that both of us entered higher education entirely on a whim. And I was absolutely fascinated to listen to Mark's thoughts about what he calls Emotional Fortitude - a signature attribute of “undisruptable CEOs” that he defines as, “the art of examining one's own thoughts and emotions surrounding a decision in order to consider those thoughts and emotions themselves as inputs to the decision-making process.” Though we have traveled different paths, the fact that we are both so keen on helping leaders know themselves and do the inner work of mining their emotions confirmed for me that this is someone I was so lucky to have as a mentor and teacher so many years ago.  Mark's reflections on purpose and vision are something everyone leading anything needs to listen to. This wonderful human being has a great big heart to match his great big brain. Everything he shares is oozing with humility and thoughtfulness. I hope you enjoy listening to this show as much as I enjoyed recording it with Mark.  Show Highlights:  “Knocking out a phd” could alter the course of your life The leadership superpower of Emotional Fortitude  How do organizations set up feedback loops? And how can leaders actively listen?  What is trust and how do we gain, sustain, and lose it?  Why knowing what you are feeling in the moment is one of the most important skills you can build as a leader What is left when we let go of the notion that we have something to prove to others or ourselves Understanding your feelings, in the face of a challenge, will let you know what you truly want to do about it Thoughts on (not) retiring  Vision. Is. Everything. Mark Lipton of Tremont Paint Supply, may have fallen into the family business, but he’s just as enthusiastic about it as his great-grandfather was in 1912. With two shops located in New York City, the company offers a full range of painting products from tarps and brushes to high-quality paints. He has something for everyone, including low-end apartment house owners and managers to exactly matched paints for high-end uses. To keep things running smoothly, he has two machines to blend paints with varying degrees of accuracy. There’s also a dedicated employee who will work with customers blending and reblending until the paint is an accurate match to the customer’s sample. He doesn’t believe that buying paint online is a viable choice, so he’s not concerned with that competition. Because computer screens aren’t calibrated with retail outlets’ websites, the customer has no guarantee the online-purchased paint is the right color, and the shipping costs would be prohibitive. He also has long-term contracts with manufacturers, so he can offer great variety to his clientele. Keeping his ear to the ground for trends, he can keep up with whatever the latest demand is. Lipton has also embraced social media. He has a blog and a podcast for advice and commentary and has written for trade publications. He’s now planning a video channel once he gets the equipment. Eventually, he will monetize his sites and use target ads and sponsorships. Please reach out if you have any feedback or questions. NACDD's President's Challenge Podcast Series Part 4: Leading Through Change and Disruption with Professor Mark Lipton Written by: Mehul Dalal, M.D., president, NACDD Board of Directors and chronic disease director at the Connecticut Department of Public Health In this episode, Professor Mark Lipton of the New School joins us in a conversation about his soon-to-be published research on how leaders deal with change and disruption. With the rise of disruptive technology and related platforms, the private sector has had to confront disruption in very immediate terms. His work dives deep in to how leaders in these organizations are surviving and succeeding by facing ambiguity, handling continuous disruption and managing uncertainty. We explore what looks to be emerging is a new model of handling and leading through change through five major leadership characteristics. What does this have to do with public health? Surprisingly, quite a bit. We cover areas that I suspect will resonate deeply within our community of public health practitioners, particularly in this moment national priorities and funding are in flux. We cover the ideas of “micro-revolutions” and explore how innovation can co-exist side-by side with the imperatives of day-to-day business. We talk about the importance of identifying boundaries of influence and considering carefully the “end-user experience.” Given Professor Lipton’s previous work in public health leadership development, he can translate this material to our benefit in ways that many in this field cannot. I hope you learn something interesting, new and applicable from our conversation. Thanks for listening to the Learn, Lead and Thrive podcast series!
