First Waymo Experience John shared his first ride in a Waymo self-driving car! While the wife wasn’t thrilled about having to walk to a specific pickup spot, the experience was pretty impressive. One weird moment: the car got confused by a bus at a 45-degree angle and started creeping into the left lane. Overall verdict: comfortable, cheaper than Uber, and no awkward small talk required. Eric’s Coding Adventure In a rare “Eric writes code” moment, he debugged a POC project by littering the codebase with 15+ write-to-log statements (because who needs X debug?). The culprit? A renamed variable he forgot to update elsewhere. Classic. John was horrified to learn there’s no static analysis running. The demo went well… until someone asked to see the customer interface. MySQL 8.0 → 8.4 Upgrade Planning John’s been preparing for the MySQL 8.0 to 8.4 upgrade (8.0 is end of life). The previous team left amazing documentation, but there’s one major issue: the DBA rejected converting from utf8mb3 to utf8mb4 character set because the tables are so massive it would lock them for way too long. That’s a problem for future John. AWS S3 Cleanup – 75 Million Files! John tackled a years-old problem: phone call recordings stored as both WAV and MP3 files in S3. The cleanup script identified 75 million WAV files to delete, which took a day and a half to process. Potential savings: $100/day. Joe asked about intelligent tiering, which… yeah, probably should look into that. PHP Tek 2026 – 68 Days Away! The conference schedule is live! Four tracks (three PHP Tek + one JS Tek), hotel rooms at the discounted rate are going fast, and Eric admitted he skipped Scale this year because he was just too exhausted. Focus is on PHP Tek now! Laravel 13 Dropping March 17 Laravel 13 is dropping on Tuesday with a focus on moving from protected properties to attributes. According to the article, there are no breaking changes (we’ll see about that). Overall, it’s a light upgrade with some new features but nothing earth-shattering. March Friday the 13th Anniversary Eric and Beck’s dating anniversary! They started dating on March Friday the 13th, 1987, when Eric picked her up at 5 PM for a midnight showing of a terrible Burt Reynolds movie called “Heat” (which apparently doesn’t exist according to IMDB). The whole show tried to help figure out what movie it actually was. Spoiler, it was called HEAT PHPUnit 13 Released Sebastian Bergmann appeared on PHP Alive & Kicking to talk about PHPUnit 13. The big change: array of assertions. The show also features a hard deprecation of some older methods. Check out the release for all the details. OpenClaw/Archie AI Success Eric’s thrilled with how the team is using the OpenClaw AI agent for daily standups. Team members are not only doing their morning standups but updating it throughout the day and even asking it to check for security alerts. The engagement has been way beyond expectations. Now Eric’s fighting the temptation to buy a Mac Mini to run it properly and get it back on Ollama, saving on API costs. 'When Silence Is Louder' is for the ones who aren't breaking up in flames, but in slow, unbearable silence. For people in relationships where the shouting stopped… and so did the caring. For anyone who would rather face an ugly truth than feel invisible. It's for the partner who is still fighting alone.

The field recording I chose is of a gentleman named Thomas Penniman performing an early 20th-century work song about weaving from the Gower Peninsula. It's a strange, compelling and mysterious recording, made in the winter of 1974. There's a repeated refrain, "Mrs Tanner has six sons/And they all sang like thrushes as they worked at the loom", which I loved. But then the song becomes quite angry because the sons have only been given half a herring for breakfast. It's not enough! Mr Penniman beats his fist, and it sounds like both a drum and a piece of wooden machinery thumping. The "song" in this version isn't musical as such, it's somewhere between a passionate poetry reading, an a cappella performance, and, as it goes on, almost like mouth music. Mr Penniman starts out in a determined, lucid way, but seems to lose the thread of the song as he goes on. I pulled at the threads of the recording's story and made discoveries. Thomas Penniman was an American anthropologist, and curator at the Pitt Rivers between 1939-63. The museum website says: "Penniman saw the Museum as aiming, 'to show the origin, development, geographical distribution and variation of the principal arts and industries of mankind from the earliest times to the age of mass production". He was responsible for the organisation of the card catalogue system, which, I suppose, is one reason why information about these field recordings, and the recordings themselves, are easily available to us online today. I liked the sense of a history of technology for this artefact. The song references the Tanner family of weavers, the most famous of which was the Welsh traditional singer Phil Tanner (1862-1950), known as the Gower Nightingale. He performed and remembered - and in doing so transmitted into the future - a body of folk songs in English, using the Gower dialect. They survive through him. His life story conjures up a lost world of Welsh weaving, of family "factories" and mills, and of singing and dancing (I sing, badly, a line from the shearing song "Rosebuds in June"). The Welsh wool industry peaked around the time the song was born, and declined after the early 20th century. The song suggests this industry was no idyll; hard, repetitive labour and poverty is suggested through its refrains and rhythms. The Tanner family has six sons, but they also had a daughter, yet she is not included in the song. Why not, and why was she unsung?I was intrigued by Thomas Penniman and Phil Tanner, and how their personal and other histories were entwined by song and work, and in this specific song as it has come to me. What was I responding to, and how, and why? I liked the way the song carries a memory of the lost world of that industry and time, and I was compelled by how Mr Penniman, who must have heard the song directly from Phil Tanner, starts out so confidently, determined to conjure the song, but loses his way - he was an elderly man by the time of the recording - and ends in a kind of confusion, unable to remember how to finish it. There seemed something moving in all this about how singers and songs are woven on the loom of time, and how the means of that remembering, or passing forward, of the song has evolved through the technologies of the century to our time of the lossless WAV format - which is how we're hearing our pieces. But there are also loose threads, tangles, confusions, snags, knots, widows and losses. I'm a poet, not a musician, so my piece is a poem. It's lo-fi in terms of how I was able to edit together the original field recording and my own text. You can probably hear how hand-made it is, despite the tech. But I like that.There's a tiny moment at the end of the recording when Mr Penniman asks for help to stop the recording, which I found haunting - the strange moment after the song has ended, and we just hear the scratchy particles of lost time. Show NotesAt NAMM 2026, Sean Martin sits down with Chuck Tennin, the President and CEO of Big Fish Music and Big Fish Music Publishing Group, for a candid conversation about the role of AI in the music industry and why the human element remains irreplaceable. Known as "The Big Fish" and "The Alligator," Chuck has spent more than five decades working as an engineer, record producer, music publisher, and consultant, and he pulls no punches when it comes to the limits of technology in creative work.Chuck draws a sharp line between AI as a tool and AI as a replacement for human creativity. He points to organizations like ASCAP, BMI, and the Recording Academy as allies in the fight to protect the creative process, arguing that AI cannot replicate the feel, the instinct, and the emotional investment that go into producing a record. For Chuck, the difference between producing music and producing a record is everything: a record has to connect with an audience on a level that no algorithm can manufacture.The conversation takes listeners through Chuck's journey from two-track analog recording to the digital era of Pro Tools, exploring how each technological leap brought efficiency but never fully captured the warmth and authenticity of tape.
