POPULARITY
- Da ist was dran.
Belinda Probert knew her father as an English war hero named Bill. What she didn't know, was that he was born Roy and that his spying did not end when the war did.Belinda Probert knew her father to be a decorated English war hero and successful businessman, whose family had all died long ago. But a few months after Bill Probert died as an old man in France, a letter arrived at her mother's house from a man claiming to be her father's nephew.Slowly, the much more complicated story of Bill's life unfurled — a story of forgotten family, new identities, spying, and a man who simply decided to make himself anew.Belinda decided to track down the truth of her father's origins and in doing so she also learned that his work with the British intelligence didn't end when the war was over. This episode of Conversations explores family secrets, family dynamics, spying, MI6, MI5, ancestry, origin stories, epic adventures, love, Wales, coal mining, classism, class warfare, World War Two, France, Normandy, Nazis, Germany, emigration, brotherhood, parenting, fathers and daughters.
In this episode, I have a fascinating conversation with the outstanding and brilliant Lila Hajosi, the director of the vocal ensemble Irini, based in France. In this episode, Lila shares her passion for the lower and middle vocal ranges, her view of the diversity situation in the field of early music, and how the organisation she founded to support female leaders in the structure of France's music organisations works. https://www.ensembleirini.com/it/equipe-artistique/ https://www.ensembleirini.com/it/ support me and contact: insightreading.enlightenment@gmail.com

In this episode, Matt and Sam welcome the Nation's Jeet Heer to the podcast to continue their journey into the work of Garry Wills—in particular, Wills's under-appreciated 1982 masterpiece, The Kennedy Imprisonment: A Meditation on Power. The book might be thought of as a sequel to his earlier Nixon Agonistes (1970). As Wills puts it in his introduction to the most recent edition of The Kennedy Imprisonment, "I had written a book about Nixon, and it was not a biography, but an attempt to see what could be learned about America from the way Nixon attracted or repelled his fellow countrymen. Why not do the same thing for the Kennedys?"The result of Wills's efforts is a devastating portrait of an Irish-Catholic family who strove to be accepted at the most rarified heights of American society—and then, when they weren't, relentlessly pursued political power. Along the way, the family patriarch, Joseph Kennedy, used his money and influence to create a series of myths surrounding his sons, most of all the son who would become president, John F. Kennedy. It is these myths at which Wills takes aim, showing how Joseph Kennedy bought his second son good press, a heroic war record, and even a Pulitzer Prize. And it was Joseph Kennedy who taught his sons what was expected of them as men: to use and dominate women (many, many women), to valorize virility and daring and risk, and to understand power as enlightened leadership by the best and brightest (most of all, the Kennedys), not as harnessing the popular energy of mass movements. What begins as a book exposing the Kennedy men as wannabe aristocrats bent on conquest, both sexual and political, ends as an indictment of the liberalism they came to represent.Sources:Garry Wills, The Kennedy Imprisonment: A Meditation on Power (1982)Garry Wills, Nixon Agonistes: The Crisis of the Self-Made Man (1970)Garry Wills, Bare Ruined Choirs: Doubt, Prophecy, and Radical Religion (1972)Joan Didion, "Wayne at the Alamo," National Review, Dec 31, 1960Hugh Kenner, The Mechanic Muse (1988)Hugh Kenner, The Pound Era (1971)Richard E. Choices are difference-makers. The choices we make not only influence our future but also affect the futures of those we love and serve. What are the four R's of the best choice-makers? What are the three questions you can ask yourself every day that will guarantee you will be a better choice-maker and consequently have better results? You are always free to make your own choices. But you are not free to choose the consequences of what choice you have chosen. "Your voice matters; your silence condones." - Lee M Brower "Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; that has made it possible for evil to triumph." - Haile Salassie

Selfmademan? Skrupelloser Geschäftemacher? Krimineller?
Anyone who is capable of honest self-reflection and critical thinking understands that the "self-made man" is a myth of our culture; that anyone who amasses a fortune does so on the backs of many other people whose work made it possible, and found the opportunity to do so because of the circumstances they happened upon by chance of birth, conditioning and sheer dumb luck. And it's worth highlighting that this is also true of all other personal circumstances, including those that people in this slice of the online community might take pride in. One doesn't for example become aware of the manipulations of the powerful and the deceptions of the media because they are particularly smart and virtuous, they do so because they were lucky enough to find information from others which helped them form this understanding, and because their personal conditioning allowed them to take that information in and let it inform their worldview. Similarly, one doesn't wind up opposing capitalism because of any personal specialness or righteousness; one finds themselves opposing capitalism because they happened upon socialist ideas after having meandered through a life which gave them the conditioning necessary for them to seriously consider those perspectives and take them on board. If their life had unfolded differently, through no fault or virtue of their own, they never would have happened upon those ideas, or if they had they would not have been receptive to them. I said "Anyone who is capable of honest self-reflection and critical thinking" above, but even those gifts come upon us largely by sheer dumb luck, brought to us by other people in the form of information and conditioning throughout our lives. My point is we're all just kind of muddling our way through this thing, and our successes and failures (by whatever metric we measure success and failure) are due more to the unfolding of humanity's collective consciousness than any brilliance or defectiveness on our own part. Obviously we must all try to do our very best with the hand that we were dealt in life, but it's probably a good idea to harbor some compassion for those who don't get it as right as we do in our eyes. We were all born into a world saturated with propaganda and dominated by abusive systems, and ultimately the degree to which we are able to see our way around in that world says as much about how good or bad we are as a seed landing on rich or sandy earth says about the quality of the seed. There's an awful lot going on in this simple, short little song. So much so that I'll be honest, I missed almost all of it before I sat down to really analyze it. I don't know if I'd ever caught that odd, missing-a-bar timing between the verse sections, or the switch back to more conventional counting in the chorus.Check out the song here: https://youtu.be/E8kNnb08l7Q If you are able to donate financially to humanitarian aid relief efforts in Ukraine, the Red Cross is coordinating a large-scale effort which you can contribute to by visiting their website here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/100227/donate/1The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Today I've got Mike Dillard on the show. Mike has been one of my entrepreneurial heroes for as long as I've been on this journey of creating content, building business, and understanding marketing. He built his first 7-figure business by the age of 27, and has gone on to build three, multiple 8-figure companies with more than $60 million in combined revenue. His podcast, the Self Made Man - later titled the Mike Dillard Podcast has had over 7 million downloads, and guests include Tony Robbins, Daymond John, Mike Rowe, Tony Hawk, and Gene Simmons. Mike's expertise around sales, copywriting, and scaling business has had a profound impact on my evolution as an entrepreneur. But that's not why I wanted to have Mike on the show. No, I wanted to sit down and talk with Mike because he is best known for his ability to predict future global trends. He purchased his first Bitcoin in 2013, built the world's first automated hydroponic robot with Dr. Peter Diamandis in 2016, and is a private investor in innovative startups like ONNIT, Click & Grow, Opus Sound Beds, and Space X. His next prediction? That the global global food, health, energy, and financial systems will face unprecedented challenges, leading to global conflict around the world. During this conversation we dive deep into what is going on in our culture, in our country, and around the world, - how we should think about this as fathers and leaders, and more specifically - what we can do about it as fathers to make sure that we are protecting and providing for our family. If you don't know what you would do if the power grid gets shut off, or what you would do if the grocery store shuts down - this episode is for you. I hope that Mike's teachings can open your eyes to the very real possibility of the world changing forever, very rapidly - and hope that you can have some very tactical and practical take aways that will help you be better prepared to lead your family through chaotic times. "What is best and weakest in America goes out to reciprocating strength and deficiencies in Richard Nixon." It's difficult to think of a more electric meeting of author and subject than Garry Wills and Richard Nixon, a meeting that produced what might be the best book ever written about American politics, Wills's Nixon Agonistes: The Crisis of the Self-Made Man. What begins as reporting from the campaign trail during the 1968 presidential contest—where Wills introduces us to Nixon, George Wallace, Nelson Rockefeller, and more—eventually becomes a profound meditation on the fate of liberalism in the United States. Wills found in Nixon the key to unlocking the reigning—but by then faltering—myths of their country's history and self-understanding, and what they reveal about each other. Along the way he discusses the complex psychological dance between Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower; takes us on a tour of Nixon's hometown, Whittier, California; describes the Republicans' "southern strategy"; examines the roiling anger and protests over the Vietnam War; and offers on-the-ground reportage from the 1968 conventions (the GOP's in Miami, the Democrats', infamously, in Chicago). Matt and Sam try to make sense of it all and ponder what Nixon Agonistes might say about how we got here and where we're going.
