We wrap our mini-series looking at production design in Doctor Who with our own top-five design picks from stories broadcast from 2011 through to 2020. Listen in to hear which stories design work overseen by Michael Pickwoad, Arwel Wyn Jones, or Dafydd Shurmer will make out cut and why we picked them. Opening music is "Up the Shard" and closing music is "A Fly on a Painting", both composed by Murray Gold. We recorded this episode on 14 January 2024.

Remembering Michael Pickwoad; defining "problematic faves" - ALYSSA: (talks to Chip about her suggestion for a series about Problematic Faves) CHIP: (dictates a response via Siri, which changes the text to ‘Problematic Babes’) ALYSSA: “Yup, there’s our episode title.” We return from our unexpected hiatus in time travel bringing you Rachel Talalay, who joins Alyssa to celebrate the late Michael Pickwoad. Also, we launch a new segment about those episodes that we both enjoy and cringe at, simultaneously. Reality Bomb’s Joy Piedmont and Verity!’s Deb Stanish are here to help us define Problematic Faves. Host Chip Sudderth and Alyssa Franke with Rachel Talalay, Joy Piedmont and Deborah Stanish.
Sad news this week as legendary production designer Michael Pickwoad passed away at age 73, leaving behind a legion of fans and a body of work that included iconic Doctor Who sets over 71 episodes but spanned a decades-long career in film and television. He will be missed. We also speculate about a likely Sunday start date in October for Series 11, we have news of a Doctor Who fan experience coming to Johannesburg, Matt Smith being cast in Star Wars: Episode IX, and most excitingly, part two of our Miniscope featuring 1970s writing duo Bob Baker and Dave Martin! Michael spoke to us about his design choices for the mini-series, their deviations from the original, and the location shoot in Namibia and South Africa. His team was nominated for their work on the series for an Excellence in Production Design Award from the Art Directors Guild. Michael has worked on many fantastic projects in film and TV from the classic Withnail and I to, most recently, Doctor Who. Be seeing you!Part of the Time for Cakes and Ale podcast. MUTTER’S SPIRAL Podcast is back, and we're talking about "Thin Ice", the delightful 3rd episode of Series 10 of DOCTOR WHO, written by the amazing Sarah Dollard! John and I will talk all about Bill's first trip into the past and the lessons she learns from her tutor, the Doctor. This week, she sees some of the hard truths of the life she's embarked upon and has to confront death and suffering in a way she hasn't yet (i.e., as it happens directly in front of her). While there are many great and serious lines, speeches, and thoughts in this episode, there are just as many funny moments plus the continued great chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie. We will rhapsodize over those, as well as giving well-deserved kudos to the costuming and the overall design of the episode, courtesy of Haley Nebauer and Michael Pickwoad, respectively. It's our favorite episode of the season, and one we both think will continue to delight us for years to come. Quintessential Doctor Who! Please have a listen, won't you?
Warren, Steven and Erika are winding down their UK journey, but they’re still wandering around London, Derby, Cardiff and elsewhere with stunned looks in their eyes and swelling love for Albion in their hearts. Meanwhile, "The Zygon Inversion" has graced our screens, and the Three Who Rule have some things to say about it, and the much talked about performance of one Peter Capaldi! Plus news, and an interview with current Doctor Who production designer Michael Pickwoad! Next week, Long Island Who, live (ish) from NYC (ish)!
