A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
Five travellers, trapped on Earth and without a means of escape, face Autons, Silurians, Ambassadors & Primords! But who will reign supreme in this popular season?
Normal service will be resumed in a couple of weeks (apologies to those of you waiting for the Girl Who Died to turn into the Woman Who Lived) but we make no apologies for interrupting the flow of Whocasts to broadcast a special couple of commentaries of something very important. Happy Times... host Toby Hadoke has spent the past many decades researching Nigel Kneale's seminal Quatermass serials and on Monday his book covering the fist of them - The Quatermass Experiment - comes out. To coincide with this long awaited occurrence, here he is commentating on the very first episode, and Contact Has Been Established with Nigel Kneale's biograoher, Andy Murray, who in true Happy Times... style will be offering up his favourite five things about the instalment. This has been made with the understanding that many listeners will be unfamiliar with the serial, so you can come in with no foreknowledge, so fear not. You won't get lost (unlike the Quatermass rocket!) Strap yourselves in and prepare for take-off... #quatermass #nigelkneale #quatermasscommentary #thequatermassexperiment #reginaldtate #rudolphcartier #bernardquatermass Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Shane waxes eloquent (ok, he might rant mildly) on several aspects of the mainstream comic book industry including the direct market business model, variant covers, multiple characters with the same name, and constant status quo changes (plus the overuse of the word “iconic” these days, which isn't comics-related but Shane kvetches about it anyway). A mini-review and comparison of DC's Absolute Universe and Marvel's Ultimate Universe (which one does Shane like best). Doctor Who has been back on the air for 20 years! A sincere shout-out to Toby Hadoke. An ailing Doctor Who super fan, lost episodes of Who, and the use of AI. D&D 2024: is it a new edition or not? (and no one seems to really be talking about D&D 2024 to be honest). The tariff war's effect on game publishers and vague predictions and hopes for the future. A tribute to friend of the show Tony Dutra, now sadly gone. Shane Plays Geek Talk Episode #282 - 4/26/2025 Like what you hear? And so he comes onto Happy Times and Places to discuss a favorite episode of his, Amy's Choice, and to tell us all about his splendid new tome (available now!). Recorded two years ago - how time flies - we (mostly) wax lyrical about the closing two parter of series three. It was a time when we were both pinching ourselves at the shows success and loving what was being delivered.
This week we're joined by actor, comedian and Doctor Who super-fan Toby Hadoke. He runs and is the host of XS Malarky comedy club in Manchester, is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio and has written several books on Doctor Who. Did we mention he loves Doctor Who? Based on the hugely successful Scarred for Life books, this is a weekly exploration of the things that scared people growing up and what those things say about us today. Join Andy Bush and co-authors Stephen Brotherstone and Dave Lawrence as, each week, they talk to a special guest who brings with them three terrors from their childhoods. Well, the Doctor is in trouble, framed (and Earth expression) for a crime we know he didn't commit. As he exercises his legal rights and goes hunting for his nemeisis, what things will he do and say that will take the fancy of our guest, Holby City script editor Daren Thomas? This is a bit os a step outside the usual; it started life intending to be an intro to another episode, but we were enjoying ourselves and it just ran away with us. You could say that this is the punchline to a very long-running joke in this podcast, so for long-time listeners, this is Jon proving that his spectacular schoolfriend Toby is a real live human being. We do not, however, talk about gambling. At all. I mean, Fintan and Jon do a bit in the intro [0:00 - 35:00], but not like the norm. Don't worry though, we will be back to gambling next week; this is just a bonus while we're at ICE.In this episode of the Gambling Files podcast, Jon welcomes comedian, actor and writer Toby Hadoke, who shares his journey from a childhood filled with storytelling to becoming a writer and comedian. The conversation explores Toby's upcoming book on Quatermass, his experiences running a comedy club, and his passion for Doctor Who. They discuss the challenges and joys of creative endeavours, the influence of iconic figures like John Carpenter and Nigel Kneale, and the importance of personal connections in the arts. The episode is filled with humour, nostalgia, and insights into the world of comedy and writing [00:35:01 - 01:45:00].In a nutshell: Toby's journey began with writing letters to actors at a young age.Persistence in writing can lead to eventual success.Toby's comedy club has been running for 27 years, showcasing emerging talent. The importance of creating a welcoming environment for audiences and performers.Toby's Doctor Who podcast emerged from a need for connection during lockdown.Personal stories and experiences shape creative works. The influence of classic sci-fi on modern storytelling is significant.Collaboration and networking are key in the entertainment industry.Toby's experiences in theatre highlight the unique challenges of live performance. The importance of preserving artistic legacies and stories.Choice quotes: "Toby is real.""I may be incompetent, but I get there in the end."Toby on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/toby-hadoke-7b616328/The Gambling Files podcast delves into the business side of the betting world. Here we go folks - a crashing plane, World War II, Ada Lovelace with a machine gun. Lovely Joe Ford encourages host Toby Hadoke to stop worrying and learn to love the Chibnall era ... and Toby tries very hard. How he does ansd if he succeeds... well, that is up to you :) There's certainly plenty to talk and think about though: especially when some of Joe's favourite things are your host's least favourite. A classic Doctor Who story which has been chosen by a key figure in the show's animantion range - Martin Geraghty. What will Martin draw inspiration from to celebrate about this moody, spooky, sometimes darkly funny story? Anyway, this is a good one - a terrific story that host Toby Hadoke has a lot of fun revisiting. And as ever the Omnibus has new opening and closing sections - probably only about 2% of the entire running time but at least it shows these aren't just cobbled together and provides something new if you listened to the episodic version. #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. This week, we're huddling with Toby Hadoke in a tent in a cave set somewhere on Mars, wondering what that massive gun is for and trying to decide which terrifying Imperial Majesty to give our fealty to. It's Empress of Mars. Notes and links Lucifer Box is the protagonist of three spy novels by Mark Gatiss set in the early twentieth century, The Vesuvius Club (2004), The Devil in Amber (2006) and Black Butterfly (2008). Empress of Mars first aired on 10 June 2017. Two days earlier, there was a general election, in which Theresa May's Conservative government was returned to power with a slightly reduced majority. May had become prime minister of the UK in July 2016 and had begun the process of leaving the EU by triggering Article 50 in March 2017. The UK formally left the EU on 31 January 2020, just two days before Praxeus aired. One of the clear inspirations for the premise here is H G Wells's novel The First Men in the Moon (1901), in which a penniless writer and his eccentric inventor neighbour travel to the moon and meet its indigenous inhabitants, who are unimpressed with what they hear about our social and political systems on earth. A film adaptation First Men in the Moon (1969) was co-written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featured music by Laurie Johnson, who will be familiar to fans of The Three Handed Game. There was also a television adaptation in 2010, written by Mark Gatiss and starring both him and Rory Kinnear. Other inspirations include Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter novels, starting with A Princess of Mars in 1912, in which a Civil War veteran from Virginia is transported to Mars and becomes involved in various wars and areopolitical struggles. There are eleven books in the series, culminating in John Carter of Mars in 1964. And just one more possible inspiration: She (1887), by H Rider Haggard, about the search for a white sorceress who rules a tribe in a remote part of Africa. Katy Manning played an Ice Warrior queen for Big Finish, in a box set called The Second Doctor Adventures: Beyond the War Games, released in 2020. According to Toby, Anthony Calf, who plays Godsacre here, was also in The Visitation. He played Charles, the son of John Savident's Squire in the opening scenes of Part 1, and it was indeed his first television role. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Last weekend, a new episode of Maximum Power was released, in which Pete and Si interviewed two of the people involved in the creation of the new Blakes 7 Series 1 blu-ray box set — filmmakers Chris Chapman and Chris Thompson. We'll be back to cover Series D next month. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we raised the occasional eyebrow as a shapeshifting red octopus ran amok on the Enterprise in an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series called The Survivor.

So... we move (very slowly, it is The Sensorites after all) from the space ship to the Sense Sphere but all is not what it seems on the peaceful planet. Some resent the travellers, and there's a danger so hidden that nobody - bar perhaps everyone watching the episode - will ever guess what it is. A gentle reminder that this month, Toby Hadoke's Time Travels will be weekly as opposed to fortnightly whilst batteries are recharged and general maintenance is carried out. The next key of Marinus is hiding in a jar in an old man's laboratory, but it's a jungle out there... and jungle that is trying to get in. Before the episode can be transmitted though, there is a row about exactly who came up with it. And what's this, an episode in which the companions play a greater role than the Doctor, who is conspicuous by his absence? Wouldn't happen these days! Oh, and we get up close and personal - and totally naked - with one of the story's main guest stars, who made TV histroy in full colour and fully undressed! #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. The fortnightly releases of Toby Hadoke's Time Travels will recommence in October. Thanks for indulging the current battery recharge which is well needed x The Third Doctor's first trip into space (eat that Colony!) enables us to see the faces behind the masks and the ... whatever it is behind the Venetian (or maybe Martian) blinds. We have something gassy in decontamination and the cloning of Max Faulkner: it's all happening in a story that the deinzens of Patreon are havbing a ball watching along with (se we hope you are too). And remember - it's pretty close between Mark Wright and Toby when it comes to choosing their favourite things. Toby Hadoke's Time Travels will be weekly during August and September- the twice weekly releases will return in October. So, the story steps up a pace: beginnning, as it does, with the death of another major character and having Liz held hostage and the Doctor jetting off into space. Will his journey be as wayward as the story itself is often written off as being, or will it hit the target? And with Toby and illustrious guest Mark Wright neck and neck, surely your host can't screw this up? Can he? #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Toby Hadoke's Time Travels is reducing its release rate to once a week during August and September because it is very tired and overworked and needs a holiday (it won't get one, but at least this'll take the pressure off a bit). The plot gets thicker and thicker, but not as thick as Taltalian's accent... and thereby hangs a tale (but perhaps one that is slightly too long). Anyway, there is much to recommend this episode: Reegan continues to be a charmer, the Doctor is on fine form, and the Ambassadors don't get the best of receptions from Max Faulkner when they try to muscle their way past him. What will writer and editor Mark Wright choose as his favourite thing from a story that has plenty to choose from? #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
Who else but the masterful, anecdote driven and fact happy Toby Hadoke could captivate you for almost five hours about this superb story. I hope you're as captivated as I was.
There is much to love about this story, but the majority of fandom has never quite got to grips with it. This episode might help to explain why - it's a tricky one to watch because of the diffciulties restoring the pictures, and there are a couple of elements which sit awkwardly amonst the show's canon (the vanishing of the tape, Bessie's forcefield). But there's also a fantastic hi-jacking, a compelling story and exemplary cast. Will guest Mark Wright and host Toby Hadoke be on the same wavelength? Or are they secretly plotting against each other? Please note that during August and September Toby Hadoke's Time Travels will be going weekly because, well, we all need a bit of a rest and recharge. This partcular Happy Times and Places has had some excellent feedback though; so hopefully you'll get plenty of quality despite the reduced quantity. Robin Bunce, Cambridge academic and writer, whose father Roger was a legnedary BBC cameraman who worked with most of the classic Doctors, has chosen Attack of the Cybermen to celebrate in this positively inclined podcast series. What will he choose to celebrate about this contiunuity rich and somewhat violent story? And will host Toby Hadoke choose the same things... or will he be left out in the cold? doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. And so we get stoned for one last time. So stoned we go on a trip to hyperspace for a complete change in style and content from the Hammer Horror of the early instalmnents. Often seen as the weaker part of the story, what will Steve Cranford like about it, and will he be able to convince host Toby Hadoke (and indeed, you)? The 100th Doctor Who story - maybe we should have held out and had it as the 100th Happy Times and Places! Gah - there's always clarity after the event! Anyway, this has been one that has never quite done it for yoiur host, Toby Hadoke: and he is open about this at the start... but of course, the whole point of the podcast is to get a special guest (in this case presenter and beefcake Stephen Cranford) to be so enthusiastic that Toby can't help but feel the love. So draw your curtains, summon your raven and prepare to sacrfice the next hour or so on the Stones of Blood. Join Rod, Joe, Gareth & Toby as we go right back to the beginning as we follow the adventures of Ian & Barbara and their kidnappers, Doctor Who and his Unearthly (grand) Child.
That fantastic documentary maker Chris Chapman only happens to have chosen one you host Toby Hadoke's favourite stories : so this is very much a love-in as the two of them get green fingered - pulling out the weeds, nurturing the precious components and displaying the glrouius blooms of The Seeds of Doom for all you listeners. But will they agree on what the best things are about this story: well, even if they don't, they could ceratinly play this story all day in their green cathedral. After a hiatus you get two episodes on top of each other. So it seems only appropraite to do the same... Indefinable Magic Bite Size are immediate reactions to the latest Doctor Who episodes, but instead of being straightforward reviews they consider an aspect of the fresh adventure and use it to examine life, fandom and Doctor Who in general. Tonight, with the Fab Four (well, two of them) svaing the day and - of course - a twist at the end, your host Toby Hadoke looks at the Beatles and music in Doctor Who in general to see how the use of popular tunes has changed over the years and what they bring to the show. And he talks about mix tapes, recording off air, and tryng to get down and funky in the bedroom to Malcolm Clarke's Sea Devils score.
Welcome back. Toby Hadoke's Time Travels has been on holiday. Thanks for bearing with its much needed rest and recuperation. But now... it has returned with something brand new. Indefinable Magic, whimsical essays based on some aspect of the show, has decided to turn its attention to the new Doctor Who episodes as they are broadcast. There will be so many podcasts doing brillinat work reviewing and reacting to the new episodes, so we thought we'd do something a little different. Your host Toby Hadoke has reacted to his first viewing and written down his thoughts on a particular aspect of it, and how it affects his love of Doctor Who and all sorts of other related stuff. So rather than being a blow-by-blow account of each episode, it is his reaction to the instalment in question, but in a more circumspect and all-encompassing manner than a straightforward review. Something different then, but hopefully enjoyable, interesteing an good humoured. This episode, after Space Babies, considers the nature of 'new" in a long running show with a vast old past, and muses on how tricky it is to keep a show fresh without bending it so out of shape that it is unrecogniseable. Artist Connor Adkins has chosen this partcular story to celebrate, but he doesn't need to do too much to make host Toby Hadoke eulogise this one - it's long been a favourite. All the fun of the fair (or all the curse of the circus) is to be had in this spooky and surreal slice of Sylvester. Script editor Andrew Cartmel (whose latest Vinyl Detectove novel is out now!) joins them - throws his hat into the ring no less - to give his response to the second inslament of this splendid adventure. To tie in with the release of Andrew Cartmel's latest novel - released on March 19th in the UK and April 9th in the US (by Titan Books) - he's gusting on this edition to respond to host Toby Hadoke and guest Connor J Adkins' reactions to The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. This one has always been something of a favourite of Toby's so it's a bit of a love-in. In fact, there is too much to choose from - the direction, the music, the location and various cast members would all be shoe-ins on any normal occasion. So what will Connor and Toby - and indeed script editor Andrew - plump for? (Oh, look, even this blurb has a choice based cliffhanger). The Celestial Toymaker puts guest Kieran Highman and host Toby Hadoke to the Final Test: which is episode four of this story which - and the podcast has been very honest with you about this - Toby has tended to find a bit of a struggle. This was recorded very much in between all sorts of other things but everyone seems to quite enjoy it when it's all a bit shambolic so nopthing has been done to hide that. Let's be honest, The Celestial Toymaker itself is a bit shambolic - and host Toby Hadoke has gone on record before to say that this episode might be the worst instalment of Classic Who in the 60s, if not of all time. So the whole accentuating the positive might be a bit tricky mightn't it? Let's see how he gets on... and maybe guest Kieran Highman can help :) Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Well, as all tongues are a-wagging about the new animation of The Celestial Toymaker, here is a podcast recorded just before the news of its resurrection was announced, which takes us back to the source material. Now then - and here's the catch - this is a happy-clappy podcast about how wondeful Doctor who is, and the last time you host Toby Hadoke watched this story (or at least a recon of it) he absolutely loathed it. So strap yourselves in - there's no way he can win this one, unless he cheats (and as people cheating seems to be the entire plot of this story, he'd be in good company). See, we're moaning already and we're only at the description. Lovely fan Kieran Highman is our special guest. He will, for sure, make a staunch Celestial advocate : and that is what this is all about! Dalek and Cyber expert Gavin Rymill advocates for one of Doctor Who's less celebrated adventures : but one which comes with a lot of expectation due to it being an anniversary story. This one has it all - Nazis, Cybermen, Time Lord secrets, and Skinheads who don't like social workers. So, with this being a positive podcast, will gavin and host Toby Hadoke manage to find the gold amongst the Silver Nemesis?
