We're celebrating all things Tom! You know I really think we might! But are the runners up and the winners the wrong way around? And will there be some rule breaking and cheating occuring? Who will win this hotly contested era?
One of the very best writers, reviewers, and chroniclers of TV and Film science fiction, Steve O'Brien, has chosen a New Series episode as a sequel to his championing of Black Orchid some years ago. It's not the Series One episode that is generally on the top of anyone's list, but has time been kinder to it? Will Steve and your host Toby Hadoke share a taste for dinner and bondage? Or will the whole thing just fall through a crack in the floor? #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. The time has come and the two previously missing but now gloriously present episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan, namely The Nightmare Begins (Episode 1) and Devil's Planet (Episode 3), are here to be viewed and reviewed! They appeared not only on the BBC iPlayer but also in full on the US (but not Canadian, feh) Classic Doctor Who Youtube channel, and we have viewed said episodes and have thoughts. But that's not all we also have an interview with Toby Hadoke, who hosted a screening at Riverside Studios and reflects with Steven on the screening, the episodes, and the overall wonder that is their return! This is a repackaged repeat: an old episode of Happy Times and Places with a new intro and outro to reflect the discovery of this episode ...an episode which was lost when this edition was recorded. Hopefully this re-release will whet your appetite for the imminent release of Devils' Planet for the first time since 1965. The Daleks continue with their planning whilst the Doctor and co master the controls of the Spar spaceship - only to be propelled towards a penal planet. There's lots of theorising about the pictures we couldn't see when this episode was lost - and soon we'll be able to see if your host, Toby Hadoke, was right, and if the memories of original viewer Ian McLachlan match what actually happened. Sadly, Ian will not be able to join in when Devil's Planet when it hits inlayer on easter weekend, as he sadly passed away shortly after recoding this episode. A plague on both our contributors as guest Mark Aldridge and host Toby Hadoke have to see if their enthusiam for this episode of Doctor Who is infectious. But will they display a commonality of symptoms as they take the temperature of the installment and assess it for signs of good acting from pater Purves, the encouraging presence of Michael Sheard and a real spike in activity come the cliffhanger. A treat from the archives as documentary producer Ed Stradling and host Toby Hadoke reunite, having made a programme on this story for the BBC DVD range. The Quatermass Experiment, the highly influential series considered the “birth of TV Sci-Fi”, with Toby Hadoke (Quatermass Experiment megafan, Doctor Who megafan, special features do-er, author, and standup comedian… he just sits around and twiddles his thumbs, does Toby). Toby's written the definitive book on the first Quatermass Experiment serial! Some Doctor Who discussion. “Behind the sofa.” The sneaky plan Toby used to name his dog. Nigel Neale (Quatermass writer) has influenced such directors as John Carpenter, Joe Dante, and Dan O'Bannon. Which Quatermass Experiment serial does Toby recommend starting with? Different motivations for British and American TV in decades past. Toby says Nigel Neale's The Road has the best ending of anything, ever. What are the chances of more Quatermass in the future? A nice tangent into John Carpenter's The Thing. A few last-minute Doctor Who tangents (including one about the Doctor going into his own brain). Pronunciation differences between the British and Americans (how the heck do you say Omega, anyway?). Toby actually likes one of the Bad Jokes of the Week. Five travellers, trapped on Earth and without a means of escape, face Autons, Silurians, Ambassadors & Primords! But who will reign supreme in this popular season?
Normal service will be resumed in a couple of weeks (apologies to those of you waiting for the Girl Who Died to turn into the Woman Who Lived) but we make no apologies for interrupting the flow of Whocasts to broadcast a special couple of commentaries of something very important. Happy Times... host Toby Hadoke has spent the past many decades researching Nigel Kneale's seminal Quatermass serials and on Monday his book covering the fist of them - The Quatermass Experiment - comes out. To coincide with this long awaited occurrence, here he is commentating on the very first episode, and Contact Has Been Established with Nigel Kneale's biograoher, Andy Murray, who in true Happy Times... style will be offering up his favourite five things about the instalment. This has been made with the understanding that many listeners will be unfamiliar with the serial, so you can come in with no foreknowledge, so fear not. You won't get lost (unlike the Quatermass rocket!) Shane waxes eloquent (ok, he might rant mildly) on several aspects of the mainstream comic book industry including the direct market business model, variant covers, multiple characters with the same name, and constant status quo changes (plus the overuse of the word “iconic” these days, which isn't comics-related but Shane kvetches about it anyway). A mini-review and comparison of DC's Absolute Universe and Marvel's Ultimate Universe (which one does Shane like best). Doctor Who has been back on the air for 20 years! A sincere shout-out to Toby Hadoke. An ailing Doctor Who super fan, lost episodes of Who, and the use of AI. D&D 2024: is it a new edition or not? (and no one seems to really be talking about D&D 2024 to be honest). The tariff war's effect on game publishers and vague predictions and hopes for the future. Here we go folks - a crashing plane, World War II, Ada Lovelace with a machine gun. Lovely Joe Ford encourages host Toby Hadoke to stop worrying and learn to love the Chibnall era ... and Toby tries very hard. How he does ansd if he succeeds... well, that is up to you :) There's certainly plenty to talk and think about though: especially when some of Joe's favourite things are your host's least favourite. Is it all gonna kick off, or will they just stop it all to sit down and talk through their problems? At length.
