We go long on this episode about the cult British comedy starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann as two drunken, unemployed actors who spend a weekend in the country. Under the surface is a surprising film about the end of the 1960s, the end of prolonged adolescence, and the end of a friendship. We talk about Doctor Who, Charles Dickens, George Harrison, and finally Mary gets into a rant about the (narrative) crimes of Steven Moffat.

On this episode of Death By DVD we've gone on holiday by mistake. The 1987 British black comedy WITHNAIL & I is discussed at length! Possibly the quintessential British movie, join THE Linus Fitness-Centre & Harry-Scott as they pour a shot of lighter fluid and get into the politics of WITHNAIL & I. Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain. This is an episode you DON'T wanna miss! And remember all hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hair are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. I don't have anything very witty to say about this episode: we end our “Tribute to Ian” series by talking about his favorite film “Withnail & I”. I was so honored to have Liz Woodington (Ian's wife and guest on our “The Dark Knight” episode) join me to discuss a film so beloved to Ian and so many others. We discuss the peculiarities of Bruce Robinson, the immense quotability of the script, and the wonderful payoff of that final Hamlet speech. Talking about this film without Ian is not the way that anybody wants to hear it, but Liz brought her unique perspective and Ian's love for this film to the discussion and I could not have hoped for a better episode. This week, Liz recommends “The Boat that Rocked” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Adam recommends “Life Itself” (available on Prime, Kanopy, & Hoopla). When listener Kev commissioned 1990's "Nuns on the Run," we were ready for a Shat The Movies sleeper hit. Monty Python's Eric Idle and Harry Potter's Hagrid together in a comedy about the English mob and religious orders sounds like a recipe for success. But sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth. Gene expected another "Withnail and I." Ash wanted something different from "Sister Act," and Big D wanted a romantic montage that lasted longer and meant something. We didn't get any of those things.  But "Nuns on the Run" had its moments: a young Robbie Coltrane explaining the Holy Trinity, a few respectable puns, and some incredible surprise '90s boobs. We also got an overused joke about eyeglasses, an onslaught of tilted cameras and close-ups, a healthy dose of white male mediocrity, an incredibly English car chase, and surprisingly little running. This episode is about the terrifying Korean ghost story by Kim Jee-woon, A Tale of Two Sisters. From Wikipedia: "The film is inspired by a Joseon Dynasty era folktale entitled Janghwa Hongryeon jeon, which has been adapted to film several times. The plot focuses on a recently released patient from a mental institution who returns home with her sister, only to face disturbing events between her stepmother and the ghosts haunting their house—all of which are connected to a dark past in the family's history." But first! Josh receives a care package for his sickness. Drusilla goes to the super horny Renaissance Pleasure Faire. They discuss Our Flag Means Death, The Northman by Robert Eggers. Drusilla doesn't like Conan the Barbarian, which is insane. The past is TOO MUDDY!!! Does Jabberwocky suck? Josh watched the Blu-ray of LA Plays Itself: The Fred Halsted Collection and WOW. We love Altered Innocence and Anus Films. Josh watches Withnail and I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising. Drusilla sees the Nicholas Cage movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Josh crushes on Pedro Pascal. Dru watched The Crimson Pirate. Everyone in old Hollywood was queer and maybe Burt Lancaster was closeted trans? Jayne Mansfield and Anton Lavey were homies and it's Beltane. Then they get into the feature. This is the most successful Korean horror film and the first Korean film to be released broadly in American theaters. Of course, Dru did the artwork for Arrow's release of this film. Josh and Dru compare this to the work of David Lynch and describe a horrifying moment. Black Christmas comes up. The duo gets into wallpaper, ghost stories, Lake Mungo and The Haunting of Hill House both reference this movie. Neither host cares for 90s horror movies from America, but the movies from abroad ripped. Steven Soderbergh comes up. Then the duo plays Have They Seen It? before announcing the next film. Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel/

[School of Movies 2022] A cult British classic made in 1987, set in 1969 and an utter failure at the box office. With the advent of affordable videos in the 1990s this one later became very popular with students who warmed to its story of two out of work actors living in ridiculous squalor. It's insanely quotable and darkly funny if you have the corresponding frequency of humour (I think I'm going to use this term in future. It's not a binary thing and that misconception is used all too often as a limp shield for crappy comedian behaviour). Richard E. Grant plays Withnail, a persistently drunken, excessively verbose drama queen. Paul McGann play's "I" (whose uncredited name is Marlowe) a mousy, skittish neurotic afraid of being attacked by a hostile world of beefy, aggressive men.  Together the pair of them borrow Withnail's Uncle Monty's cottage in Penrith and have an impromptu holiday to escape their troubles, only to find they have brought them along too. They are pitiful wretches and we should loathe them, but it's easy to feel sympathy and empathy all the same. This one deals with some confused issues of unexplored homosexuality and predatory behaviour (fuelled by the writer/director's own unfortunate experiences as a young man), so you may have to bear with it until the full context is unfolded. But it would be entirely understandable if you want to put a pin in this for later.

SERIES 2 BEGINS IN EARNEST!After 20 episodes, and a little break, I decided to call this episode the beginning of Series 2. Gives it a nice little bit of neatness doesn't it, and who doesn't like that? 20 in series 1, who bloody knows how many in series 2? Before we gorged ourselves on perhaps the most famous British cult film of all time, this week we fired up the podmobile, stuffed it full of the finest wines known to humanity and shuttled off to Penrith. Only then did we strip naked, cover ourselves in deep heat, and begin podcasting as aggressively as humanely possible. Why of course it's Bruce Robinson's 'Withnail & I', the quintessential cult flick, a film that launched the careers of Richard E. Grant (I first pumped the air) and Paul McGann (Do you like craft beer?). Joining me was regular plodding podders, Jono Bon and Andy Blythe, and we had a great laugh, picking this fabulous cinematic marvel apart. Go off and watch this film, it's available for free on YouTube, it's got rather a wonderfully chilling and tragic performance by Richard Griffiths as the old lush, Uncle Monty. Please rate and review the podcast, it helps us soar up the charts and achieve world domination. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barbarathebandFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/barbarathebandTwitter: https://twitter.com/barbaratheband2

I wish I could say that “1001 by 1” is going to continue, but I'm not sure if it will. Please continue to follow us and stay tuned as we slowly re-release our entire back catalog so that Ian's legacy can live on.Want to suggest a film for us to review on the show? In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

How many actors can claim they launched a thriving screen career by playing a washed-up, unemployed actor? That distinction belongs to Richard E. Grant, whose road from cult classic “Withnail and I” to an award-winning oeuvre began with what he calls a “fuck you” attitude. From tips on playing drunk to his instinctive acting techniques (hint: they involve a character's sex life), Richard has plenty of advice for his fellow performers. His thoughts on forging a career in the arts are evergreen: “Never give up. If you feel that it is something that you're compelled to do, you will know that. And if it's not, then don't waste your time and energy because there are too many people that want it more than you do.” Born in the Protectorate of Swaziland, now Eswatini, Richard performed onstage as a child and studied at the University of Cape Town. After landing the titular role in Bruce Robinson's “Withnail and I” thanks to casting director Mary Selway, he amassed onscreen credits in the UK and Hollywood, collaborating with Steve Martin, Robert Altman, Winona Ryder, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Julian Fellowes, and more. He wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical film “Wah-Wah,” starred in “Spice World,” “Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Star Wars,” and earned an Academy Award nomination for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Richard has recently lent his talents to the Disney+ series “Loki” and Amazon Studios' musical “Everybody's Talking About Jamie.” Check out his conversation with co-star Max Harwood on backstage.com: https://bit.ly/3nCUmX4 --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years.
