Ben and Rob chart the final moments of ‘Life Of Chuck', Mike Flanagan's Stephen King adaptation that has quickly become one of the most talked about life affirming films of the year. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, Jacob Tremblay and Mia Sara, Life Of Chuck tells the story of an ordinary man whose existence unfolds backwards through collapsing worlds, childhood dance lessons and the small moments that define a human life. Why has Life Of Chuck become such a powerful Stephen King adaptation for modern audiences; how did Mike Flanagan turn a strange, non linear short story into a deeply emotional and life affirming film; and why are so many viewers calling this one of the most moving movies of the year? How do Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill and Chiwetel Ejiofor anchor a story built on memory, grief and joy; what do the attic and the cupola really represent; and how do the recurring objects across timelines quietly rewrite what the film is saying? And finally, what does Life Of Chuck really mean about connection, mortality and the fear of forgetting what made life beautiful? CONSUUUME to find out all this and much, much more!PLUS! Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.This time Tim's joining guest host Paul Abbott for a chat about the mid-nineties 'loungecore' compilation series The Sound Gallery, and in particular the little-heard spinoff volume The Sound Spectrum. Along the way we'll be debating the relative merits of a whining bloke over-emoting a rewrite of the Weetos jingle and a bloke in another room singing through a cardboard tube, failing to buy an album worth five thousand quid for twenty pence, learning how to throw shade with a rogue capital letter, pondering the proliferation of Johns and Alans in library music and definitely not watching anything whatsoever late at night on SAT1.You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. In the city that never sleeps - and where, inexplicably, the Statue of Liberty is secretly a Weeping Angel - Ken & Mike bid a fond farewell to Amy Pond and Rory Williams as they cover "The Angels Take Manhattan". Plot logistics aside, there's a fair number of interesting things to discuss in this one, especially the impact that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill left on the show, and how they very much defined the Matt Smith era of the show as, well, Matt Smith. There's also this character called River Song that our hosts like to discuss as well.
Send us a textTurkey month is filled with surrealism isn't it?Today were talking about:In a world where the future feels eerily ordinary, Dual imagines the quiet horror of being replaced by a better version of yourself — and being forced to fight her to the death.Karen Gillan delivers a double-dose of deadpan detachment as a woman confronting mortality, identity, and the unsettling realization that her clone may actually have better social skills. The film blends minimalist sci-fi with razor-dry humor, creating a world where emotional numbness is a vibe and violence is just another scheduled appointment. It's bleak. It's funny. It's strangely tender.
Who's ready to talk more about ABC's tragically cancelled series, Selfie?Jenn (@notajenny) and Chels (@chels725) have returned to talk about an episode that focuses a lot on Charmonique and her son, Kevin: "Nugget of Wisdom"! They discuss Academy Award winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph's performance in this episode — and why we should all aspire to have the kind of self-love Charmonique does. The duo spends a lot of time unpacking the startlingly apropos advice that a 2014 show has for us about social media perceptions and work-life balance in 2025. Jenn and Chels conclude by talking about why there needs to be more romance on television and movies and debate the best dipping sauces for chicken nuggets.Enjoy!Mentioned in this episode:Our episode with Jessie Ennis.Morgan's podcast, Female Gaze: The Film Club. Our recommended media:Loot (Apple TV+)Best Friends With Nicole Byer & Sasheer Zamata podcastThe films of Nia DaCosta/Tessa Thompson (Little Woods, Passing, Candyman, The Marvels, Hedda).Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall in One Battle After Another.Find your local food bank and ways to support your community this holiday season.Follow us on Bluesky, Instagram, and Twitter for more fun content. Hi everyone, this week we have a Halloween surprise for you! My producer Jeph and I are rewatching Mike Flanagan's 2013 horror film Oculus, which I starred in. Grab some popcorn and candy and get ready for some southern gothic scares. I haven't seen this movie in over a decade, so it was a lot of fun to sit down and try to remember what happened. Jeph had never seen it, so he was coming in blind! For this audio companion, Jeph and I introduce the movie and talk through some behind the scenes stories about the rest of the cast, which included Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Kate Siegel and Rory Cochrane. We also get into the stunts and effects, how the film found success at the box office and how to act possessed in a dress! The Brave and the Bold. Dave Bautista hypet Highlander-rebootThere can be only one.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesTrammell Tillman, the break-out star of Severance who plays Seth Milchick on the Apple+ show, will be part of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast. Variety got the scoop on the Emmy-nominated actor joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but no details on who he's playing were announced. Move over Marvel and DC…Archie is here to take us by storm? In an interesting move from filmmakers Phil Lord and Chritopher Miller, Universal is fronting an Archie adaptation for the big screen. Comics legend Tom King is writing the screenplay and former 20th Century Studios President of Production Emma Watts is producing. King made the leap from page to screen recently in the DCU, penning Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow and the Lanterns series, but is well-known for his comics in Marvel, DC, and beyond. The CW show Riverdale adapted the Archie comics in its own unique way and plot details for this film are unknown. Universal also produced a version of the Archie characters in Josie and the Pussycats in 2001. Though we sing the praises for AppleTV+ loudly and frequently on this show, we've also often touted it as being one of the more inexpensive streaming services. Alas, all good things come to an end, as the streamer announced its cost jumped from $9.99 to $12.99 effective August 21. The annual rate of $99.99 has not changed yet. As of now, AppleTV+ stands alone as the only streamer that doesn't have an ad-supported option. Dafne Keen and Saara Chaudry have joined the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Keen will play Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and the hunt. Saara Chaudry will play Zoë Nightshade, an immortal hunter and Artemis' lieutenant.Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumaji star Karen Gillan has joined the cast of the Amazon MGM's Highlander reboot and will play Heather, the love interest of Henry Cavill's character. The first trailer for season 13 of Futurama has been released. The Netflix sensation was only released for one weekend and clearly had a draw. Now production company Sony is in talks to create a sequel with Netflix. Variety has learned that despite announcing plans for a season two earlier this year, Paramount has opted not to move forward with another season of the Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. The studio is planning however on assembling a writer's room to develop a second season of Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel series.Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the creators behind Netflix's Cobra Kai are in talks to bring Knight Rider, the 1980s David Hasselhoff-led action drama centered on a computerized talking car, to the big screen.

If you knew the world was about to end, what would you do? That's the dilemma Karen Gillan's character faces in new film, The Life of Chuck, in which she stars opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor. Karen tells Nuala McGovern about her latest role, her evolving relationship with the Marvel films and her hope to return to directing.'This report must act as a line in the sand…it should be read as a snapshot of what rock bottom looks like.' That's the warning from the Children's Commissioner, two years on from her landmark report on the scale of children's exposure to pornography online. Research out today from the Commissioner's Office finds that more children are being exposed to pornography, with a growing number stumbling across it by accident, some younger than six. Much of the content children encounter is violent. The report also reveals troubling attitudes towards women and girls: nearly half of 16- to 21-year-olds agreed with the statement, 'Girls may say no at first but can be persuaded to have sex.' Joining Nuala in the studio is the Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza. As excitement builds ahead of the Women's Rugby World Cup, we hear from endurance athlete Lexi Chambers. The five-time world record holder is in the middle of another epic challenge, wheeling 322 miles from Twickenham Stadium to Sunderland's Stadium of Light to deliver the official match whistle in time for Friday's opening game between England and the USA. Lexi, who lives with multiple chronic pain conditions, is aiming to complete 10 ultramarathons in 10 days using her every day, non-sport wheelchair. She takes a break to fill Nuala in on her progress and explain why she's taken on such a challenge. When Ukrainian President Zelensky went to the White House this week, he handed over a letter to President Trump. It was a message from his wife Olena Zelenska to Melania Trump, thanking the First Lady for the letter she had sent to Vladimir Putin highlighting the issue of the Ukrainian children removed by Russian forces. It's believed that at least 20,000 Ukrainian children have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied territory without the consent of their parents since the full-scale invasion. Nuala is joined by Ukrainian filmmaker Shahida Tulaganova and BBC Ukraine journalist Irena Taranyuk to discuss.

It's time for a blast into the past: specifically back to 2014 when ABC debuted a tragically cancelled TV series called Selfie.Jenn (@notajenny) and Chels (@chels725) were huge fans of the short-lived show and decided to revisit it this summer. So stay tuned as they cover all 13 episodes. To kick things off though, they talk about the series' pilot. The cohosts spend the first part of the episode taking a trip back to a simpler time, reflecting on what it was like to watch pilot seasons unfold, as well as posting on social media and watching episodes along with the casts of your favorite TV shows. They also talk about ABC's lineup of great shows with regrettable titles (including this one). The two then get into the premise of the show itself, discuss how the pilot functions as a Pygmalion/My Fair Lady adaptation, swoon over John Cho as a pitch-perfect romantic lead, talk about the lovely and versatile Karen Gillan, and then end discussing why the show technically had two pilots and the differences between what aired live and what made it onto Hulu.If you can find the series, watch along with us this summer and fall! Enjoy the episode! Our recommended media:King of Drag (Revry)KPop Demon Hunters (Netflix)Mentioned in this episode:Our Just About Write handle on the Selfie writers room board, courtesy of Emily Kapnek.Humphrey Ker said he was close to being cast as Henry Higgs on Selfie. The two different pilot endings.Follow us on Bluesky, Instagram, and Twitter for more fun content. Sony made a sequel to Jumanji, that sad Robin Williams movie from the ‘90s, 22 years later? And it made a billion dollars? And everyone liked it?? It's true. And as a result, every time a movie studio makes a questionable legacy sequel this is why. They're telling themselves: “It worked with Jumanji.” It's why Disney is putting out a Tron movie this year. Well, the thing is, the movie needs to be good! And Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle IS good. It's a very likable and winning comedy. It's just kind of a lackluster blockbuster. But what a fun cast! The Rock is once again able to have fun playing a guy who feels very awkward looking like The Rock. Kevin Hart is very funny, Karen Gillan kicks ass, and Jack Black gives maybe his best ever performance. Nick Jonas is also here. And this movie has us asking the big questions. What makes you you and me me? Are our personalities completely predetermined? Do NPCs have a right to privacy? If you're popular in high school, will you be popular for the rest of your life? And are dicks just the tits of the man? There's also an unexpected 10-minute Blade Runner digression. The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long! It's a brand new season and that means two brand new study topics! In Season 15, I'm studying something called the villain's monologue and Melanie is studying turning points. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 is one of those films that's ok as long as you don't look too closely! There are definitely logic problems but insofar as our study topics are concerned, this movie offers up some valuable craft advice. Enjoy! -V. This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast: Sean and Jeff kick things off by gleefully roasting the trailer for the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel—which looks more like a parody than a follow-up. From there, they split on one of the more polarizing new releases before coming together for an emotional deep-dive into one of the year's best films. Materialists Directed by Celine Song Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal A high-end New York City matchmaker finds herself caught between a lucrative life with the “perfect” client and unresolved feelings for her flawed, but compelling, ex. One of our hosts appreciated the charm, the other… not so much. The Life of Chuck Directed by Mike Flanagan Starring Tom Hiddleston, Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill, Mia Sara, and Carl Lumbly Flanagan dials back the horror to deliver a deeply personal, existential love letter to life and memory. Based on a Stephen King short story, The Life of Chuck is haunting, beautiful, and profoundly moving. Both Sean and Jeff were all in on this one. Classic Review: A Good Marriage We didn't linger too long on this 2014 thriller based on another Stephen King short story. Following the emotional resonance of The Life of Chuck, returning to a run-of-the-mill King adaptation just didn't quite hit.
