On this week's show, we take a look at the film Nic Cage claims is his craziest ever, Prisoners of the Ghostland, Karen Gillan kicks ass and drinks unhealthy treats in Gunpowder Milkshake and Becky's pick for Patron's Choice wins as we take a trip on David Lynch's Lost Highway.
In this universe, Thor is an only child because Odin & Frigga never adopted Loki, who was instead raised by his biological parents as the Crown Prince of Jotunheim. Without Loki's influence, Thor grew to be a party boy instead of a hero. While his mother is away, Thor travels to Midgard to headline an intergalactic party and meets Dr. Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis, who tried to alert S.H.I.E.L.D. of Thor's arrival. Thor and his countless minions party hard all over Earth, creating problems for SHIELD and interim director Maria Hill. Loki and his Jotun entourage also join the party, encouraging Thor's reckless behavior. SHIELD enlists the aid of Captain Marvel to subdue Thor & the partygoers, but using her full power could do serious harm on earth. So Jane ultimately contacts Frigga via Heimdall, and Thor cleans up his global mess in time to avoid punishment from his mother. But a villainous version of Vision shows up at the very end, leaving us to wonder his motive. Episode 7 stars Jeffrey Wright, Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Tom Hiddleston, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Frank Grillo, Taika Waititi, Karen Gillan, Frank Grillo, Seth Green, Rachel House, Jaimie Alexander, Josette Eales, Alexandra Daniels, and Clancy Brown. Respect director Liesl Tommy and Gunpowder Milkshake star Karen Gillan hit the Girls On Film airwaves this week -- two more fabulous women making female-focused films. Liesl Tommy, director of new Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, joins us to talk about the making of the finger-snapping musical flick. She shares the process of putting the queen of soul on screen, and reveals how the movie's singing star Jennifer Hudson really does belt out those vocals live. Plus, we hear how she paid her personal respects to Aretha with a heart-warming cameo -- keep your eyes peeled… Next up, Anna chats to Karen Gillan about her starring role in glossy new action-thriller Gunpowder Milkshake. The star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- beloved to many as former companion Amy Pond in Doctor Who -- shares the fun of playing an action heroine sans skimpy outfit. She tells Anna how it felt to work with an all-female central cast in a movie that serves sisterhood with its shootouts, and how they became a badass crew onscreen and off. Where was this week's Empire Podcast recorded? *very Phil Collins voice* Stu-stu-studio! That's right, folks. After a year and a half of SquadCasting and podcasting remotely, this week's pod sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer gather in the same studio for some film-related fun. Join them as they natter on about the great reunion moments in movie history, discuss the week's movie news (Chris Nolan leaving WB? Hawkeye looks fun?), and review Gunpowder Milkshake, Kate, and Malignant. A film, it's fair to say, that has divided the pod. But it's not all studio-bound shenanigans. Chris logs onto Zoom not once, but twice, this week to talk to Karen Gillan, star of Gunpowder Milkshake, and Mark Cousins, former Moviedrome maestro and now the director of documentary The Story Of Looking. And, somewhere along the way, he explains to Helen what orange chicken is. This podcast contains multitudes, folks. Dive in. And sorry for the delirium; we were very happy to see each other. (Not in a sex way.) Enjoy.

Once Upon A Time ...... There was a girl assassin that screwed up, even though maybe she didn't. The Firm she worked for tried to kill her, so her Mum, who abandoned her years before for doing pretty much the same thing, appears out of no where, along with three other butt kicking women, and together they kick butt. Finally the people of the UK get to watch the Karen Gillan action John Wick / Kingsman mash up Gunpowder Milkshake, even though its been out on Netflix in the states since July (not that we're bitter). But is it up there with John Wick and Kingsman?. On this episode of Attack the Backlog, Marc shoots their way through the forests, villages, caves, and ruins of Jumanji: The Video Game, the video game all about Jumanji: The Movie. Not the original movie starring Robin Williams, but the new (good) ones, starring The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, that one Jonas brother, the guy who’s too old for this shit, and the fanficced voice of Detective Pikachu. Jumanji: The Video Game originally came out on November 8th, 2019 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Anyway, something-something, not that bad--does that make you mad?--cheers and enjoy the...wait for it...show!
Karen Gillan needs no introduction, and yet... here we are, just in case. The performing artist formerly known as Amy Pond has appeared in the likes of the MCU (as Nebula), Jumanji (as Ruby Roundhouse) and that little tiny weeny sci-fi show Doctor Who. She's back in our lives on September 17th when her new fight-filled action-thriller (called Gunpowder Milkshake by the way) hits NOW / Sky Cinema in the UK. Here, as an early special treat for you special podcast listeners, is Karen's 'Story So Far' interview, a week before it hits BBC iPlayer. Enjoy!

The Madames play a little catch-up as they cover Episodes 2 & 3 of What If. In the alternate universe of Episode 2, Ego sends the Ravagers to kidnap his human son, Peter Quill. However, they accidentally kidnap T'Challa, Prince of Wakanda by accident. T'Challa becomes a Robin Hood version of Star-Lord. Along with his cohorts Korath, Thanos, Nebula, Yondu, Kraglin, and Taserface, T'Challa plots to capture the Embers of Genesis from the Collector. The team is successful & T'Challa is ultimately reunited with his Wakandan family. Episode 2 stars Chadwick Boseman, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Josh Brolin, Kurt Russell, John Kani, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Gunn, Chris Sullivan, Seth Green, Danai Gurira, Carrie Coon, Jeffrey Wright, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Ophelia Lovibond, and Fred Tatasciore. Episode 3 calls back to several Marvel movies, including The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In this universe, the Avengers are never formed because they are systematically murdered before they can team up. Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton, Thor, and Natasha Romanoff are all killed in mysterious ways. It's up to Nick Fury & Agent Phil Coulson to find the killer. Thanks to some information found by Black Widow and an uneasy alliance with Loki, Fury finds & neutralizes the killer, Hank Pym. Pym was on a mission to avenge his daughter Hope Van Dyne, who, in this universe, was a S.H.I.E.L.D. killed in the line of duty. Fury's alliance with Loki ultimately backfires, as the God of Mischief successfully takes over the world. But Fury is determined to defeat Loki's army, and Captain Marvel arrives to help. Episode 3 stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Lake Bell, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Frank Grillo, Stephanie Panisello, Jaimie Alexander, and Jeffrey Wright. Gunpowder Milkshake is one of those films that has all the elements to be really good but fails to live up to the potential and the cast. It's one of the cardinal sins of a film with a great cast and an interesting concept. Seriously, with a cast of women like Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett and Michelle Yeoh, Gunpowder Milkshake didn't have to try hard to get our attention. The mistake comes from where the attention is put in this film and not leaning on why the audiences were interested in the first place. You would think that this film would focus mostly on ‘The Librarians', the secret sisterhood of assassins. However this film oddly enough doesn't give us enough of them. This film should have been treated as an ensemble film but instead it focused mostly on Gillan's Sam and only gives us pieces of the lore behind The Librarians. It's a puzzling choice. Especially since when the film focuses on the women of the movie, it works very well. The chemistry between the cast is great. Chloe Coleman as the young Emily is also a great addition and works really well with everyone. It tis a little disappointing that we didn't get enough of Paul Giamatti being over-the-top Giamatti but what we do get works. One thing I can't help but feel is that this film would have been better in the hands of a female director and writer. Yes, men can and should be able to write and direct female-centered films well. But in many cases, there's a clear lack of understanding the assignment. Gunpowder Milkshake falls into that category. It feels like the veterans Basset, Yeoh, Headey and Gugino were able to salvage this film from being a complete disaster just based off of their own talent and not because of what they were given with the script. There's a lot of forced “Girl Power” moments that feel as if they were clearly written by a man (and they were) and don't do this cast justice. This film is entertaining enough and apparently there's a sequel being developed. I hope that the lessons learned from this first outing are taken to heart and I really hope they hand the reigns over to a woman to do it justice. Like what you hear? Gunpowder Milkshake brings a mix of John Wick action and cinematic styling that hasn't really been done before. Karen Gillan is the lead in yet another action role for her. Guns in books, assassins with useless arms, an eight-year-old driving in a car chase*. With a name like Gunpowder Milkshake, it has to be ridiculous. And it is. It's also ridiculously entertaining. Karen Gillan stars in this colorful, violent, all-out action romp. The setpieces are inventive, the sets are interesting, and the dialogue exists. And, believe it or not, there's a few lessons crammed in there. Don and Chuck discuss them, of course (Down with the patriarchy!). But, ultimately, this is the definition of a popcorn movie: Pure entertainment. Enjoy. *Eight and three quarters. Sorry, Emily. A new week, another action movie review on The Countdown. Except this time, the guys are taking a backseat and the girls are leading the way as Karen Gillan and co kick ALL the asses in Gunpowder Milkshake. But is this straight-to-Netflix-in-the-North-Americas, stylish, action flick a worthy film in this post-John Wick world? Or is it all too plain and vanilla-y, when it could use a whole lot more malt and other flavours? (See what I was going for there?) Find out as The Countdown continues ... Laurits continues to play the wild card, and it's the decision he makes about his serpent that creates the possibility of a new, compelling storyline. On this live, unedited episode of Grawlix Nights we learn the truth about Sarah Fier as we discuss Fear Street Part 3: 1666. Did Netflix stick the landing on the finale of the Fear Street trilogy? We do our best to avoid spoilers during our review. We also discuss the stylish though derivative action flick, Gunpowder Milkshake. It's basically John Wick but with a solid cast of predominantly female leads including Karen Gillan. You know, Amy Pond from Doctor Who… And from there the entire episode is derailed by Doctor Who, once again. So, you could say the featured topic this episode is Doctor Who. Spoilerpiece celebrates its 7th anniversary this week! After we all offer a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, Megan leads off with a review of M. Night Shyamalan's OLD (5:52), a horror movie about people aging rapidly, which is exactly what we expected in the worst way. Next, we talk about Navot Papushado's GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (17:44), a stylized Netflix action film with a stacked cast (Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, and Michelle Yeoh), that isn't used to its fullest. After that, we dig into SETTLERS (33:47), Wyatt Rockefeller's brutal sci-fi Western that we struggled through. We wrap up with FEAR STREET: Part Two - 1978 (44:04), the second film in Leigh Janiak's Netflix horror trilogy, which we were all excited to see (it doesn't disappoint). And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Robert Luketic's 2001 rom-com LEGALLY BLONDE starring Reese Witherspoon! We have a blast talking about this movie, which recently marked its 20th anniversary.
GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE MOVIE REVIEW In this new Netflix super-stylized action-comedy from the writer/director of “Big Bad Wolves”, Karen Gillan is Sam. She's a nigh-unstoppable super-assassin, working for a shadow cabinet of masters called The Firm. There is a small percentage of actors who get the opportunity to be part of one franchise, but with todays guest, KAREN GILLAN, she's been part of not just one, but TWO multibillion dollar franchises. Her first agent described her as having "sheer perseverance" due to her being relentless in having them represent her: AT THE AGE OF 15! Two working class parents who were her biggest fans to the point of even playing major roles in booking auditions. That's right, you will hear how her mother's thick Scottish accent made Adam Mckay laugh to the point where he cast Karen due to the sheer comedy of the self tape. Her father's love for old crooners such as Frank Sinatra gave Karen aspirations of being an opera singer. She was so infatuated with the performance arts that gymnastic looked like dance routines! Her iconic “Nebula” role on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was initially a one-off with her character dying in the first film but her take on the character inspired James Gunn to rewrite the fate of her character. She did not waste anytime after finishing drama school by booking the "Amy Pond" role on DOCTOR WHO which soon led to her torrid pace of SELFIE, AVENGERS, JUMANJI and the soon to be released Netflix GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE. She is easily Box Office Gold but that doesn't deter her from being fearful of losing that momentum. She's reached a place where she would TAKE advice from her younger self instead of giving it. These are the unforgettable stories that landed KAREN GILLAN right here. For exclusive content surrounding this and all podcast episodes, sign up for our amazing newsletter at AlyshiaOchse.com. This episode of Collider Ladies Night marks a very special occasion. Karen Gillan is officially the show's first returning guest! Back in 2019, we went heavy on Gillan's work behind the lens and in the Jumanji franchise, but round two gave us the opportunity to discuss Gillan's early modeling days, her journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Nebula and, of course, her new Netflix movie, Gunpowder Milkshake. Gillan leads the film as Sam. Back when she was just 12-years-old, Sam's mother Scarlet (Lena Headey) was forced to abandon her, leaving Sam to be raised by The Firm, the crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now as an adult, Sam's a successful and very skilled hit-woman, just like her mother once was. However, when a job forces Sam to choose between The Firm and an innocent young girl (Chloe Coleman), Sam opts to do what's right, putting a massive target on her back in the process. Check out this episode of Ladies Night to hear all about how Gillan capitalized on the popularity of Doctor Who, what it's been like developing Nebula with James Gunn, Joe and Anthony Russo and now Taika Waititi, which Gunpowder Milkshake co-star she was geeking out over the most and so much more!
