This week on Shoot the Hostage, Dan and Sarah brave the wasteland of cinema history to grapple with the undisputed heavy artillery of our big old floppy flop season, Tank Girl (1995). Be warned, as is tradition, we swear and spoil. Sarah chose this one and frankly, it feels like some kind of revenge after Battlefield Earth.  Released in 1995 this film doesn't just qualify as a flop, it lives in the flop house and pays rent with lint and disappointment. It somehow made more than Empire Records and Police Academy 7, which, let's be honest, is our primary metric for success. Based on the very British, very anarchic comic book series and directed by Rachel Talalay, this 1990s comic book movie should have been a slam dunk, or at least a solid ground rule double. We get into the nitty-gritty of why this felt like such missed potential. Here's what you can expect from this week's episode: Discussions on Lori Petty as Tank Girl (aka Rebecca) and who else lobbied for the role The uncredited, sophisticated (yet visually questionable) work of Stan Winston Studios on the Rippers The surprisingly great soundtrack curated by Courtney Love Dream casting for a potential reboot Ramblings that connect this film to The Warriors, Scott Pilgrim... and, bizarrely, Roy Scheider in seaQuest DSV. Why this comic book movie adaptation ultimately crashed and burned at the box office If you're searching for podcasts about movie flops or maybe just a podcast reviewing box office bombs, retro comic book films, or trying to understand why a film featuring a kick-ass female lead and directed by Rachel Talalay failed so spectacularly, this is the episode for you. Or maybe you just need someone to talk about the fact they made a kangaroo penis for a movie? Look no further! This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're diving into the late-stage slasher sequels, comparing two sixth entries that took their respective franchises in wildly different directions. We're pitting Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) against A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991). Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) Directed by Tom McLoughlin, Jason Lives marks a significant shift for the Friday the 13th series. After a brief hiatus, Jason returns, but this time, he's a resurrected, supernatural force of nature. This entry leans heavily into self-aware humor and action-oriented set pieces, giving us a more playful, albeit still violent, take on the iconic killer. A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) Directed by Rachel Talalay, Freddy's Dead attempts to wrap up the Nightmare on Elm Street saga with a surreal and cartoonish finale. This film delves into Freddy's origins, revealing his childhood and the source of his evil. It's known for its over-the-top special effects, bizarre dream sequences, and a generally more comedic tone than previous entries. Join us as we dissect these two films, exploring how they attempted to revitalize their franchises, the impact of their tonal shifts, and whether they succeeded in delivering satisfying sequels. Spoilers start around 5:50.

The 1990s! A time when Hollywood's brightest minds were trying to solve the impossible problem of how to make a whole movie from those comic book thingies. Nowadays, they're trying to work out how to stop doing that, but that hasn't decreased the charm of things like Rachel Talalay's Tank Girl, a post-apocalyptic slice of pop feminism in which Lori Petty's titular antihero fights a scenery-chewing Malcolm McDowell while also - and there is no polite way to say this - getting it on with mutant kangaroos. One of whom is Ice-T. It's fair to assume you won't be seeing this in Phase Whatever of Marvel, but plenty of people have sought it out since its legendarily unsuccessful initial release. On this episode, we're joined again by comics expert Andrew from Behold! podcast in order to properly assess the film's position in comic-movie history, talk about its quintessentially '90s soundtrack and tease out its connections to alt-rock icons like R.E.M., Devo and Bjork. Please note that our statement that Margot Robbie is usually well-cast was recorded before the Great Wuthering Heights Casting Disaster of 2024. If you can forgive us for that, we'd be super-grateful if you could go over to our Patreon. In return, you get a bonus monthly episode of this show - the latest one, about House of Gucci, is a howl - as well as lots of other stuff that isn't available anywhere else: exclusive podcasts, reviews of The X-Files, Red Dwarf and The Twilight Zone, and much more. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

If you think because she is dead, I am weak, then you understand very little. If you were any part of killing her, and you're not afraid, then you understand nothing at all. So, for your own sake, understand this. I am the Doctor. I'm coming to find you, and I will never, ever stop. This week, Rob Valentine drops by to spend four-and-a-half billion years admiring how clever Steven Moffat, Peter Capaldi, Rachel Talalay and Murray Gold are. It's Heaven Sent. Notes and links Here is the full text of the Brothers Grimm fairytale The Shepherd Boy. It's very short. Rob feels that this episode echoes another tale about digging an escape tunnel: The Shawshank Redemption. Here's Morgan Freeman's character red, talking about Tim Robbins's Andy: “I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty.” In Viktor E Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning (1959), he argues that the primary human drive isn't pleasure or sex or the avoidance of suffering; instead, he says that we are motivated by a desire for meaning. And finally, after the closing credits, Simon offers us a pick of the week courtesy of his husband, Brian. It's Helen O'Hara's Women vs Hollywood: The Rise and Fall of Women in Film (2021), which talks about the way that female film directors like Rachel Talalay are punished more harshly for their failures than men are. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Simon is @simonmoore72, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Rob is @MrRobValentine. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll go to heroically embarrassing lengths just to tell you how much we love you. And more Did you all enjoy The Star Beast? Of course you did. But if you want to know what we thought, check out our new Doctor Who flashcast, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire. Like Jodie into Terror before it, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be released a day or two after each new episode of Doctor Who and will contain our ill-considered and half-baked initial reactions to the episode. Keep an eye out on the new podcast website or on our social media accounts for details. Our second newest podcast is Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast, whose second episode was released yesterday. All this, plus dressing like a building, dealing with on-set toxic events, directing Monica Bellucci, and the kinds of characters she'd like to see on screen, come up in this sprawling conversation that reveals an artist as fun, badass, and idiosyncratic as the titular TANK GIRL.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Catherine Hardwicke

A story of a serial killer that continues his killing ways after being transformed into a electrical force that can inhabit and manipulate all things connected to the electrical grid, Ghost in the Machine (1993) is a colorful and at times silly horror film that plays fast and loose with science and physics. The “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise had never been bigger following the release of the fourth installment in the series “The Dream Master,” which was then followed by a TV series titled “Freddy's Nightmares.” New Line Cinema, which was nicknamed “The House That Freddy Built,” wasted no time ordering a fifth film with an idea that was originally pitched during pre-production on Part 3 about Freddy Krueger inhabiting the mind of an unborn child. It wasn't until years later when producer Sara Risher decided to develop the idea further. Sadly, script rewrites and the search for a director, which included both Frank Miller and Stephen King being considered, ended up with Stephen Hopkins leading the project. The reception at the box office was a far cry from previous installments and that led to producers rethinking the future of the franchise. By 1991, New Line Cinema had started developing different projects and the studio felt it was time to move beyond “Nightmare on Elm Street.” So it was decided that the sixth film in the series would be the last. Future Oscar winner Peter Jackson actually worked on a version of the script with several other stories considered including a continuing plot around Alice Johnson and the child she was carrying in Part 5. Ultimately, the decision was made to go in a completely different direction with director Rachel Talalay decided to inject more humor into this installment that eventually including the final sequences being shot and shown in 3D. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we continue with our series on “Nightmare on Elm Street” by talking about Part 5 “The Dream Child” and “Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare”…

Glad to be back from the DDT-soaked swamps of Florida last episode, Sean and Cody are joined by Best Pick podcast host Jessica Regan for a journey into the heart of flashy pop-culture ‘90s-ness that is this 1995 science fiction comedy. In the world of Tank Girl, Earth has been desiccated by a comet and lovable desert-dwelling rogue Rebecca (Lori Petty) has the last water that hasn't been sucked up by the evil Water & Power corporation. When W&P exec Nestlē Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell) decides he's gotta have her water too, Rebecca nicks a tank and teams up with Jet Girl (Naomi Watts) to wreak some righteous revenge on the capitalist patriarchy. Environmental issues discussed include the real life water swindles, child poisonings and other horrendous deeds of Nestlē Corporation, and whether climate change is today what asteroid/comet apocalypse scenarios were in the ‘90s. How does Nestlē gain control of water resources it doesn't own, and how does it abuse the rights of indigenous peoples to choke the planet in billions of unrecycled water bottles? Did Nestlē's soulless CEO really try to tell the United Nations that water was not a human right? Speaking of that CEO, what other evil planet-killing corporation did he sit on the board of? How was the vision of Tank Girl director Rachel Talalay compromised by sexist memos from studio executives? What's the perfect age to see this movie? Is this film a noble experiment in feminism and queerness that went off the rails, or does it remain a hidden gem of ‘90s culture? How much would you pay for a prosthetic kangaroo pee-pee? Should there be a remake of this film (yes) and who should play Tank Girl? All these questions and more are rolling across the desert in this much-anticipated, long-awaited episode of Green Screen. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

It's the last episode of the first half of the season, and to celebrate, Nathan, James, Peter and Adam Richard have invited literally everyone they've ever met to join them at Demons' Run for a bloodless victory swiftly followed by a painful death. Oh, and the baby shower has been cancelled. Which is just the sort of thing that happens when A Good Man Goes to War. Notes and links If you want to hear more about the challenges of directing a Moffat script, you should head over to Rachel Talalay's Tumblr, which is a fascinating and very telling read. Nathan mentions (again) The Writer's Tale, which is the place to go to find out about how difficult RTD found the workload on Doctor Who during his first stint as showrunner of the programme. Pray for him. Upsettingly, Lesbian Spank Inferno was the title of the fourth episode of Steven Moffat's breakout sitcom Coupling, in which we learn that it was also the title of series lead Steven Taylor's favourite pornographic video. James and Adam both comment on a Big Finish sequel to Inferno called Primord, in which a recast Liz Shaw (Caroline John's daughter Daisy Ashford) gets turned into a Primord or something. It's in the name, people! And finally, James mentions a post Moffat wrote on rec.arts.doctorwho, which no longer exists, but which you can find quoted in its entirety here.
