Dr. Natalie Coleman - public speaking for those in STEM STEM educator Dr. Natalie Coleman has lived quite the life, and I'm sure there's more in store. Combat veteran. Adjunct professor. County board member. I think she walks old ladies across the street in her spare time too. She's also the founder of After the Peanut, an organization that provides professional development, curriculum, tutoring and engaging STEM programs for educators and students. We chatted about her past life in the military (national guard specifically), the evolution of After the Peanut, the development of her presentation skills, and whether she is "hip." ________________ TEACH THE GEEK teachthegeek.com anchor.fm/teachthegeek youtube.teachthegeek.com @teachthegeek (FB, Twitter) @_teachthegeek_ (IG, TikTok) ________________ In STEM? If anyone says that people do not change…. Let me tell you… that is not true! I am Natalie Coleman and I introduce myself from a place of gratitude, confidence, and self-love. But it took me 44 years to come to the realization that I have a voice which is worthy of being heard and only by the Grace of God, am I able to tell my story without fear and self-judgment. From a young age, I struggled to understand just who I was and spent most of my life wearing a variety of masks that fooled me into believing that I was someone that I was not. But these masks were a survival mechanism that protected me from revealing the pain of traumatic childhood experiences that no young girl should have to experience. My tapestry of self-escapism grew into anorexia, alcoholism, and drug addiction: self-destructive behavior that would nearly take my life and taint those around me for over three decades. My story is one of turning survival into freedom: where God has turned self-centered fear, hopelessness, and spiritual emptiness into courage, hope, and a life filled with His Grace and Blessings beyond my wildest dreams…. Serenity and Peace within. Overcoming chronic addiction and poor mental health is one of the most difficult challenges that anyone can endure. But recovery is possible! God showed me that if I became willing, open-minded, and embraced truth and honesty, CHANGE is inevitable and now I know that with Him, anything is possible Speak Up Empower: https://www.speakupandempower.com/ Speak Up Empower Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/speakupandempowertv/

Libby Purves meets Jimmy Connors; Damian Barr; Jonathan Miller and Natalie Coleman. During a colourful and successful career tennis player Jimmy Connors won eight Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon twice, the US Open and the Australian Open. Taught to play by his mother, he was known for his brattish and vulgar behaviour and for his rivalries with the likes of McEnroe, Borg and Lendl. His autobiography The Outsider is published by Bantam Press. Damian Barr is a writer and journalist. His memoir Maggie and Me is about surviving a tough upbringing in Thatcher's Britain. Growing up gay within a chaotic - and at times brutal - family environment, Damian was an isolated and unhappy youngster. But by following Margaret Thatcher's advice to work hard and strive for better, he was able to plan his escape. Maggie and Me is published by Bloomsbury. Dr Jonathan Miller is an author, director, conductor, comedian and neuropsychologist. He is currently directing Rutherford & Son by Githa Sowerby. The play is a powerful drama about a northern industrial family headed by a domineering, single-minded father. Rutherford & Son is at St. James Theatre, London. Natalie Coleman is the winner of BBC Masterchef 2013. She battled her way from 50 contestants to take the crown, winning with a dish of roast pork belly served with a quail scotch egg. The former credit controller - who was taught to cook by her grandmother - tried out her Masterchef dishes on her grandfather. She is appearing at the BBC Good Food Show. Producer: Paula McGinley.
