Beetroot Juice: Maximize Strength & Speed Up Recovery? New Study Results! Ep. 1243 MAY 2025

A recent randomized, double-blind, crossover trial published in Nutrients investigated the effects of short-term beetroot juice (BJ) supplementation on resistance-trained males. Eleven healthy men (average age 21.3±1.9 years) consumed either beetroot juice, providing 450 mg of nitrate per day, or a nitrate-free placebo. The study found that BJ supplementation significantly enhanced high-intensity resistance performance. Specifically, participants completed more repetitions at 80% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM) in both bench press and back squat exercises when taking beetroot juice compared to the placebo. Peak movement velocity also improved across all tested intensities (60-80% 1RM) with BJ supplementation. Furthermore, beetroot juice led to higher muscle oxygenation (SmO2 ) particularly at 70-80% 1RM and this effect was even more pronounced after 72 hours of supplementation. The study also noted reduced cardiovascular strain, evidenced by lower peak heart rates during exercise with BJ. Post-exercise recovery favored beetroot juice, with participants showing faster recovery in jump performance (both countermovement and squat jumps) at 24 hours and experiencing reduced upper-limb delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) at 24-48 hours. These findings suggest that short-term BJ supplementation can be a practical strategy for physically active individuals looking to optimize training performance and accelerate recovery.Disclaimers:"This information is for educational purposes only and should not be interpreted as medical advice.""The study discussed was conducted on healthy, physically active young men. This House of Burning Bones by Stuart MacBride Stuartmacbride.com Amazon.com The Granite City is ready to burn, and all it takes is a single spark… In the heat of a blistering summer, Aberdeen's police are struggling: half the force is off sick, all leave has been cancelled, someone's firebombed a hotel full of migrants, and there's a massive protest march happening this Saturday. With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae is forced to juggle cases and run a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions. It doesn't help that the Aberdeen Examiner has just been bought by Natasha Agapova, a tabloid media tycoon, hell-bent on blaming local police for everything. And she's more than happy to fan the flames. But, as bad as everything seems, it's all about to get much, much worse . . . * * *About the author Stuart MacBride is the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae and Ash Henderson novels. He's also published standalones, novellas, short stories, and a slightly twisted children's picture book for slightly twisted children. Stuart lives in the wilds of northeast Scotland with his wife Fiona; cats Gherkin, Onion, and Beetroot; some hens; some horses; and an impressive collection of assorted weeds.

Additionally, Mihaela sheds light on a surprising health risk: mouthwash. Specifically, antiseptic mouthwash can negatively impact sexual function by disrupting the bacteria in your mouth that aids in the conversion of nitrates to nitric oxide. Josh Homme was born in Joshua Tree and grew up in Palm Desert, California. He founded Queens of the Stone Age in 1996 and is the lead singer, primary songwriter and guitarist in the band. Josh is one of the music industry's most prolific collaborators. Alongside Queens, he formed the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures in 2009 with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), and has produced music for Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop, Lady Gaga and many more. Queens of the Stone Age released their latest album, In Times New Roman, in 2023. To mark the final episode of the series, Angela makes some extra-special dishes for Josh, while Nick mixes his favourite cocktail, a Corvette Summer. To start, Angela prepares bone marrow and a parsley salad, a recipe from chef Fergus Henderson's book Nose to tail eating: A Kind of British Cooking. For main, it's grilled mackerel, beetroot and red onion salad, and this meal is paired with a delicious La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé Loire by the experts at Waitrose. Josh Homme is about as rock and roll as it gets, and Nick and Ange probe him on his backstage habits and what he likes on his rider. Josh talks about his treasured 15-year friendship with the late Anthony Bourdain, and shares the hilarious comment Elton John made to him before taking to the stage for the final time in his career at Glastonbury 2023. This study involved 640 high-risk patients and demonstrated that inorganic nitrates reduced kidney injuries by 60% and improved long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The episode concludes with a conversation about the practical implications and future research plans for this intervention.

Todays' episode shines a spotlight on the importance of food as medicine when it comes to enhancing your fertility. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the profound connection between the foods we consume and our overall health. Yet, this relationship is incredibly crucial. Viewing food as medicine  encourages us to view our diet not merely as a means to satisfy our hunger, but as a powerful tool to enhance our health, prevent diseases, and promote longevity. All of which are essential for promoting healthy fertility. Today, we look at three foods in particular: watermelon, beetroot & ginger and their relationship to uterine receptivity. Watermelon is rich in antioxidants is is linked to increasing NO (nitric oxide), a potent vasodilator (i.e. improves blood flow). Beetroot is also rich in several other bioactive compounds that also enhance blood flow and provide antioxidant and antiinflammatory benefits, particularly for disorders characterized by chronic inflammation. Not to mention that it is a great vegetarian source of iron. Last but not least, ginger! This superfood possesses multiple biological activities to enhance uterine receptivity and increase blood flow. Together - they make for a killer fertility enhancing combination. The data suggest that the intake of beetroot, watermelon and ginger juice significantly improved implantation and pregnancy rates. For example, a randomized study enrolled 436 female patients undergoing IVF with ICSI cycles over a period of 3 years. The clinical pregnancy rate (41% vs. 22%) were significantly higher in the "juice" group compared to the control group. You don't want to miss this one!
